evaṃ mayā śrutam - ekasmin samaye bhagavān śākyeṣu vyahārṣīt kapilavāstuni nyagrodhārāme.
tena khalu samayena āyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyano bhikṣusaṃghena sārdham paścādbhaktam kenacid eva kāryeṇa upasthānaśālāyāṃ saṃniṣaṇṇo 'bhūt. atha khalu vāṣpo nāma śākyo nirgranthaśrāvakaḥ paścādbhaktam jaṅghāvihāram anucaṅkramamāṇo 'nuvicaran yenāyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyanas tenopasaṃkrāmat, upasaṃkramyāyuṣmatā mahāmaudgalyāyanena sārdhaṃ sammodanīṃ saṃrañjanīṃ vividhāṃ kathāṃ vyatisāryaikānte niṣasāda.
ekāntaniṣaṇṇaṃ taṃ vāṣpaṃ śākyam nirgranthaśrāvakapravrajitam āyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyana idam avocat: “tat kiṃ manyase vāṣpa, iha bhikṣuḥ kāyagupto vāggupto manogupto viharati. kaccit tvaṃ vāṣpa tat sthānaṃ paśyasi yatonidānam asyotpadyeran pāpakā akuśalāsravā āyatiṃ punarbhavāya?”
vāṣpa āha: “mahāmaudgalyāyana, iha bhikṣuḥ kāyagupto vāggupto manogupto viharati, paśyāmy aham tat sthānam yatonidānam asyotpadyeran pāpakā akuśalāsravā āyatiṃ punarbhavāya. mahāmaudgalyāyana, yadi pūrvajanmani asya pāpakaṃ karma kṛtaṃ bhavati, tatonidānam asyotpadyeran pāpakā akuśalāsravā āyatiṃ punarbhavāya.”
tena khalu samayena bhagavān rahogataḥ pratisaṃlayane niṣaṇṇo divyena śrotradhātunā viśuddhenātikrāntamānuṣyakeṇa aśrauṣīd āyuṣmato mahāmaudgalyāyanasya vāṣpeṇa śākyena nirgranthaśrāvakena sārdham imam evaṃrūpaṃ kathāsallāpam. śrutvā ca bhagavān sāyāhne pratisaṃlayanād vyutthāya yenopasthānaśālā, tena bhikṣusaṃghena purato 'bhyagacchat, upagamya prajñapta evāsane niṣasāda. niṣadya bhagavān āyuṣmantaṃ mahāmaudgalyāyanam āmantrayām āsa: “kā nu khalu maudgalyāyana, adhunā vāṣpeṇa śākyena nirgranthaśrāvakena sārdham antarā kathā viprakṛtābhūt? kenacid eva kāryeṇa atra upasthānaśālāyāṃ saṃniṣaṇṇāḥ stha?”
āyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyano bhagavantam etad avocat: “ihāhaṃ bhagavan bhikṣusaṃghena sārdham paścādbhaktam kenacid eva kāryeṇa upasthānaśālāyāṃ saṃniṣaṇṇo 'bhūvam. atha vāṣpaḥ śākyo nirgranthaśrāvakaḥ paścādbhaktam jaṅghāvihāram anucaṅkramamāṇo 'nuvicaran yenāhaṃ tenopasaṃkrāmat, upasaṃkramya mayā sārdhaṃ saṃmodiṃ saṃmodanīyāṃ vividhāṃ kathāṃ vyatisāryaikānte niṣasāda. ekāntaniṣaṇṇaṃ ca taṃ vāṣpaṃ śākyam nirgranthaśrāvakam aham idam avocam: 'tat kiṃ manyase vāṣpa, iha bhikṣuḥ kāyagupto vāggupto manogupto viharati. kaccit tvaṃ vāṣpa tat sthānaṃ paśyasi yatonidānam asyotpadyeran pāpakā akuśalāsravā āyatiṃ punarbhavāya?' atha vāṣpaḥ śākyo nirgranthaśrāvako mām evam āha: 'mahāmaudgalyāyana, iha bhikṣuḥ kāyagupto vāggupto manogupto viharati. paśyāmy aham tat sthānam yatonidānam asyotpadyeran pāpakā akuśalāsravā āyatiṃ punarbhavāya. mahāmaudgalyāyana, yadi pūrvajanmani asya pāpakaṃ karma kṛtaṃ bhavati, tatonidānam asyotpadyeran pāpakā akuśalāsravā āyatiṃ punarbhavāya.' idam evaṃrūpam bhagavan kathāsallāpam mayā vāṣpeṇa śākyena nirgranthaśrāvakena sārdham adhunā kṛtam, itīmam artham vayam upasthānaśālāyāṃ saṃniṣaṇṇāḥ smaḥ.”
atha khalu bhagavān vāṣpaṃ śākyam nirgranthaśrāvakam idam avocat: “yadi tvaṃ vāṣpa me bhāṣitaṃ satyam iti manyethāḥ, satyam iti prativadeyāḥ; yadi asatyam iti manyethāḥ, asatyam iti prativadeyāḥ. yatra ca te syāt kāṅkṣā vā vimatir vā, tatra mām eva paripṛccheyāḥ: 'kiṃ nu khalu śramaṇa gautama idam, asya ca bhāṣitasya ko 'rtha' iti. yad ahaṃ bhāṣeyaṃ tat tvaṃ sādhu saṃgṛhṇīyāḥ, evam asmākam atra kathaṃsallāpo bhaviṣyati.”
vāṣpa āha: “yadi śramaṇasya gautamasya bhāṣitam satyam iti jñāsyāmi, satyam iti prativadiṣyāmi; yadi asatyam iti jñāsyāmi, asatyam iti prativadiṣyāmi. yatra ca me bhaviṣyati kāṅkṣā vā vimatir vā, tatra śramaṇaṃ gautamam eva pariprakṣyāmi: 'kiṃ nu khalu gautama idam, asya ca ko 'rtha' iti. yac chramaṇo gautamo bhāṣyate tad ahaṃ sādhu dhārayiṣyāmi; śramaṇo gautamo mayā sārdham asminn arthe kathaṃsallāpaṃ karotu.”
bhagavān āha: “tat kiṃ manyase vāṣpa, yadi bhikṣor utpadyate akuśalaḥ kāyasaṃskāraḥ, utpadyante āsravā vighātāḥ pariḍāhāś ca; sa paścāt tam akuśalam kāyasaṃskāram nirodhayati, navaṃ ca karma na karoti, purāṇaṃ ca karma vyantīkaroti; sa dṛṣṭa eva dharme 'tyantaniṣṭhaṃ gacchati, apariḍāho nityaḥ sthito 'vipariṇāmadharmā bhavati, yad uta āryaprajñayā dṛṣṭam āryaprajñayā jñātam. yadi bhikṣor utpadyante akuśalāḥ kāyasaṃskārāḥ, akuśalā vāksaṃskārāḥ, akuśalā manaḥsaṃskārāḥ, avidyāsaṃskārāḥ, āsravā vighātāḥ pariḍāhāś ca; sa paścāt tam akuśalam avidyāsaṃskāram nirodhayati, navaṃ ca karma na karoti, purāṇaṃ ca karma vyantīkaroti; sa dṛṣṭa eva dharme 'tyantaniṣṭhaṃ gacchati, apariḍāho nityaḥ sthito 'vipariṇāmadharmā bhavati, yad uta āryaprajñayā dṛṣṭam āryaprajñayā jñātam. tat kiṃ manyase vāṣpa, evaṃrūpasya bhikṣoḥ kāyaguptasya vāgguptasya manoguptasya, kaccit tvaṃ vāṣpa tat sthānaṃ paśyasi yatonidānam asyotpadyeran pāpakā akuśalāsravā āyatiṃ punarbhavāya?”
vāṣpa āha: “gautama, yady evaṃrūpo bhikṣuḥ kāyagupto vāggupto manogupto viharati, na paśyāmy aham tat sthānam yatonidānam asyotpadyeran pāpakā akuśalāsravā āyatiṃ punarbhavāya.”
bhagavān āha: “sādhu sādhu vāṣpa! tat kiṃ manyase vāṣpa, yadi bhikṣor avidyā kṣīṇā bhavati, vidyā utpannā bhavati; so 'vidyāyāṃ kṣīṇāyām vidyāyām utpannāyām, kāyaparyantikaṃ vedayitaṃ vedayamānaḥ kāyaparyantikaṃ vedayitaṃ vedayamīti prajānāti; jīvitaparyantikaṃ vedayitaṃ vedayamānaḥ jīvitaparyantikaṃ vedayitaṃ vedayamīti prajānāti; kāyasya bhedāt prāṇakṣayāt āyuṣaḥ parikṣayāt dṛṣṭa eva dharme sarvavedayitāni sarvaśo nirudhyante praśāmyanti, atyantaṃ śītībhavantīti jñātavyam. tadyathāpi nāma vāṣpa vṛkṣaṃ niśritya chāyā bhavati. athāgacchet puruṣas tīkṣṇaṃ kuṭhāram ādāya. sa tasya vṛkṣasya mūlaṃ chindyāt, mūlaṃ chittvā khaṇḍaśaḥ prapāṭayet; khaṇḍaśaḥ prapāṭya daśadhā śatadhā vā vibhajet; daśadhā śatadhā vā vibhajya agninā dagdhvā bhasmīkuryāt; bhasmīkṛtya mahāvātena vikireyāt śīghrasrotasi vā nadyāṃ pravāhayet. tat kiṃ manyase vāṣpa, yā vṛkṣaṃ niśritya chāyā āsīt, kaccit sā tatonidānam ucchinnahetukā niruddhā anutpattidharmikā bhavet?”
vāṣpa āha: “evam bho gautama.”
“evam eva vāṣpa, bhikṣur yasyāvidyā kṣīṇā bhavati vidyotpannā; so 'vidyāyāṃ kṣīṇāyām vidyāyām utpannāyām, kāyaparyantikaṃ vedayitaṃ vedayamānaḥ kāyaparyantikaṃ vedayitaṃ vedayamīti prajānāti; jīvitaparyantikaṃ vedayitaṃ vedayamānaḥ jīvitaparyantikaṃ vedayitaṃ vedayamīti prajānāti; kāyasya bhedāt prāṇakṣayāt āyuṣaḥ parikṣayāt dṛṣṭa eva dharme sarvavedayitāni sarvaśo nirudhyante praśāmyanti, atyantaṃ śītībhavantīti jñātavyam. vāṣpa, evaṃ samyakcittavimukto bhikṣuḥ ṣaṭ kuśalavihārān adhigacchati. katamān ṣaṭ? vāṣpa, bhikṣuś cakṣuṣā rūpāṇi dṛṣṭvā na sumano bhavati na durmanāḥ, upekṣako viharati niṣprārthano 'nabhisaṃskurvan smṛtimān saṃprajānan. vāṣpa, evaṃ samyakcittavimukto bhikṣur ayam prathamaṃ kuśalavihāram adhigacchati. evam śrotreṇa śabdān śrutvā, ghrāṇena gandhān ghrātvā, jihvayā rasān āsvādya, kāyena spraṣṭavyān spṛṣṭvā, manasā dharmān vijñāya, na sumano bhavati na durmanāḥ, upekṣako viharati niṣprārthano 'nabhisaṃskurvan smṛtimān saṃprajānan. vāṣpa, evaṃ samyakcittavimukto bhikṣur ayaṃ ṣaṣṭhaṃ kuśalavihāram adhigacchati. vāṣpa, evaṃ samyakcittavimukto bhikṣur imān ṣaṭ kuśalavihārān adhigacchati.”
vāṣpa āha: “evam etad bho gautama, śrutavān āryaśrāvaka evaṃ samyakcittavimuktaḥ ṣaṭ kuśalavihārān adhigacchati. katamān ṣaṭ? bho gautama, śrutavān āryaśrāvakaś cakṣuṣā rūpāṇi dṛṣṭvā na sumano bhavati na durmanāḥ, upekṣako viharati niṣprārthano 'nabhisaṃskurvan smṛtimān saṃprajānan. bho gautama, evaṃ samyakcittavimuktaḥ śrutavān āryaśrāvako 'yam prathamaṃ kuśalavihāram adhigacchati. evam śrotreṇa śabdān śrutvā, ghrāṇena gandhān ghrātvā, jihvayā rasān āsvādya, kāyena spraṣṭavyān spṛṣṭvā, manasā dharmān vijñāya, na sumano bhavati na durmanāḥ, upekṣako viharati niṣprārthano 'nabhisaṃskurvan smṛtimān saṃprajānan. evam bho gautama, samyakcittavimuktaḥ śrutavān āryaśrāvako 'yaṃ ṣaṣṭhaṃ kuśalavihāram adhigacchati. evam bho gautama, samyakcittavimuktaḥ śrutavān āryaśrāvaka imān ṣaṭ kuśalavihārān adhigacchati.”
atha khalu vāṣpaḥ śākyo nirgranthaśrāvako bhagavantam idam avocat: “ājñātaṃ mayā bho gautama, vijñātaṃ mayā sugata! tadyathāpi bho gautama cakṣuṣmān puruṣaḥ nikubjitaṃ vā utkubjayet, praticchannaṃ vā vivṛṇuyāt, mūḍhasya vā mārgaṃ deśayet, andhakāre vā pradyotaṃ dhārayet - cakṣuṣmanto rūpāṇi paśyeyur iti; evam eva śramaṇena gautamena anekaparyāyeṇa dharmo deśito vivṛto mārgānusāreṇa prakāśitaḥ. so 'haṃ bhagavan, bhavantaṃ gautamaṃ śaraṇaṃ gacchāmi dharmaṃ ca bhikṣusaṃghaṃ ca. upāsakaṃ māṃ bhagavān dhārayatu adyāgreṇāñjalipraṇāmam upetaṃ yāvajjīvaṃ śaraṇagatam.
bhagavan, tadyathāpi nāma kaścit puruṣo duṣṭāśvaṃ poṣayet lābhākāṅkṣī, sa mudhā pariśramam eva prāpnuyāt na tu lābham. aham api bhagavan tathā, tam bālaṃ nirgrantham akauśalam avijñātāram apuṇyakṣetram asusamīkṣya, dīrgharātraṃ satkṛtya gurukṛtya mānayitvā pūjayitvā lābhākāṅkṣy upāsitavān, vṛthākliṣṭo nirarthakam. so 'haṃ bhagavan dvitīyam api bhavantaṃ gautamaṃ śaraṇaṃ gacchāmi dharmaṃ ca bhikṣusaṃghaṃ ca. upāsakaṃ māṃ bhagavān dhārayatu adyāgreṇāñjalipraṇāmam upetaṃ yāvajjīvaṃ śaraṇagatam.
bhagavan, purāham ajñatvāt tasmin bāle nirgranthe śraddhāṃ premo ca utpādayitavān, tad aham adyāgreṇa samucchindāmi. tat kasya hetoḥ? sa māṃ vipralabdhavān. so 'haṃ bhagavan tṛtīyam api bhavantaṃ gautamaṃ śaraṇaṃ gacchāmi dharmaṃ ca bhikṣusaṃghaṃ ca. upāsakaṃ māṃ bhagavān dhārayatu adyāgreṇāñjalipraṇāmam upetaṃ yāvajjīvaṃ śaraṇagatam.”
idam avocad bhagavān. āttamanāḥ vāṣpaḥ śākyaḥ te ca bhikṣavo bhagavato bhāṣitam abhyanandiṣuḥ.
vāṣpasūktaṃ niṣṭhitaṃ dvitīyam.
