Madhyama Āgama 13 — tīrthyasūktam — The Discourse on Sectarian Views

evaṃ mayā śrutam — ekasmin samaye bhagavān śrāvastyāṃ vyahārṣīj jetavane 'nāthapiṇḍadasyārāme.

tatra khalu bhagavān bhikṣūn āmantrayām āsa - trīṇīmāni bhikṣavas tīrthāyatanāni nānāgotrāṇi nānānāmāni nānāsiddhāntāni nānāpravādāni, yāni paṇḍitaiḥ samyag udgṛhītāni suṣṭhu dhāritāni parebhyaś cākhyātāni tathāpy anarthāyaiva saṃvartante. katamāni trīṇi? santi bhikṣava eke śramaṇabrāhmaṇā evaṃdṛṣṭaya evaṃvādinaḥ - yat kiñcid ayaṃ puruṣapudgalaḥ karoti sarvan tat pūrvakṛtahetuneti. santy apara eke śramaṇabrāhmaṇā evaṃdṛṣṭaya evaṃvādinaḥ - yat kiñcid ayaṃ puruṣapudgalaḥ karoti sarvan tad īśvaranirmāṇahetuneti. santy apara eke śramaṇabrāhmaṇā evaṃdṛṣṭaya evaṃvādinaḥ - yat kiñcid ayaṃ puruṣapudgalaḥ karoti sarvan tad ahetvapratyayam iti.

tatra ye te śramaṇabrāhmaṇā evaṃdṛṣṭaya evaṃvādinaḥ - yat kiñcid ayaṃ puruṣapudgalaḥ karoti sarvan tat pūrvakṛtahetuneti, tān aham upasaṃkramyaivaṃ pṛcchāmi - 'satyaṃ yūyam āyuṣmanta evaṃdṛṣṭaya evaṃvādinaḥ - yat kiñcid ayaṃ puruṣapudgalaḥ karoti sarvan tat pūrvakṛtahetuneti?' te cen mayā pṛṣṭāḥ prativadanti - 'evam' iti.

tān aham evaṃ vadāmi - 'yady evam, āyuṣmantaḥ prāṇātipātino bhaviṣyanti. tat kasya hetoḥ? sarvasya pūrvakṛtahetukatvāt. evam āyuṣmanto 'dattādāyino bhaviṣyanti, kāmeṣu mithyācārino bhaviṣyanti, mṛṣāvādino bhaviṣyanti yāvan mithyādṛṣṭayo bhaviṣyanti. tat kasya hetoḥ? sarvasya pūrvakṛtahetukatvāt. āyuṣmantaḥ, sarvaṃ pūrvakṛtahetuneti tattvato 'bhiniviśamānānām adhyātmam adhyātmahetau vā karaṇīye 'karaṇīye vā na chando na vyāyāmo bhavati. āyuṣmantaḥ, karaṇīyākaraṇīye tattvato 'jānatāṃ praṇaṣṭasmṛtīnām asaṃprajānānāṃ ca na kaścid upadeśo dātuṃ śakyate. śramaṇadharmam evaṃ bhāṣamāṇo nyāyena tān śramaṇabrāhmaṇān nigṛhṇāti.'

yo 'yaṃ dharmo mayā svayaṃ jñātaḥ svayam abhisaṃbuddhākhyātaḥ, sa śramaṇair vā brāhmaṇair vā devena vā māreṇa vā brahmaṇā vānyena vā kenacil lokenānigrahyaḥ asaṃkliṣṭaḥ aprativādyaś ca. katamaḥ sa dharmo mayā svayaṃ jñātaḥ svayam abhisaṃbuddhākhyātaḥ, yaḥ śramaṇair vā brāhmaṇair vā devena vā māreṇa vā brahmaṇā vānyena vā kenacil lokenānigrahyaḥ asaṃkliṣṭaḥ aprativādyaś ca? yaduta ṣaḍāyatanadharmaḥ, yo mayā svayaṃ jñātaḥ svayam abhisaṃbuddhākhyātaḥ, yaḥ śramaṇair vā brāhmaṇair vā devena vā māreṇa vā brahmaṇā vānyena vā kenacil lokenānigrahyaḥ asaṃkliṣṭaḥ aprativādyaś ca. punar aparaṃ ṣaḍdhātudharmaḥ, yo mayā svayaṃ jñātaḥ svayam abhisaṃbuddhākhyātaḥ, yaḥ śramaṇair vā brāhmaṇair vā devena vā māreṇa vā brahmaṇā vānyena vā kenacil lokenānigrahyaḥ asaṃkliṣṭaḥ aprativādyaś ca.

katamaḥ ṣaḍāyatanadharmo yo mayā svayaṃ jñātaḥ svayam abhisaṃbuddhākhyātaḥ? yaduta cakṣurāyatanam, śrotraghrāṇajihvākāyamanasāyatanāni ca. ayam ucyate ṣaḍāyatanadharmo yo mayā svayaṃ jñātaḥ svayam abhisaṃbuddhākhyātaḥ. katamaḥ ṣaḍdhātudharmo yo mayā svayaṃ jñātaḥ svayam abhisaṃbuddhākhyātaḥ? yaduta pṛthivīdhātur abdhātus tejodhātur vāyudhātur ākāśadhātur vijñānadhātuś ca. ayam ucyate ṣaḍdhātudharmo yo mayā svayaṃ jñātaḥ svayam abhisaṃbuddhākhyātaḥ.

ṣaṇṇāṃ dhātūnāṃ samavāyān mātuḥ kukṣau garbhāvakrāntir bhavati. ṣaḍdhātupratyayāni ṣaḍāyatanāni bhavanti. ṣaḍāyatanapratyayaḥ sparśo bhavati. sparśapratyayā vedanā bhavati. vediyamānaḥ khalu bhikṣo 'idaṃ duḥkham' iti yathābhūtaṃ prajānāti. 'ayaṃ duḥkhasamudaya' iti yathābhūtaṃ prajānāti. 'idaṃ duḥkhanirodham' iti yathābhūtaṃ prajānāti. 'iyaṃ duḥkhanirodhagāminī pratipad' iti yathābhūtaṃ prajānāti.

kathaṃ ca duḥkhaṃ yathābhūtaṃ prajānāti? yaduta jātir api duḥkham, jarāpi duḥkham, vyādhir api duḥkham, maraṇam api duḥkham, apriyasaṃprayogo 'pi duḥkham, priyaviprayogo 'pi duḥkham, yad apīcchan na labhate tad api duḥkham, saṃkṣepeṇa pañcopādānaskandhā api duḥkham. evam ucyate duḥkhaṃ yathābhūtaṃ prajānātīti.

kathaṃ ca duḥkhasamudayaṃ yathābhūtaṃ prajānāti? yāyaṃ tṛṣṇā paunarbhavikī nandīrāgasahagatā tatratatrābhinandinī, evam ucyate duḥkhasamudayaṃ yathābhūtaṃ prajānātīti.

kathaṃ ca duḥkhanirodhaṃ yathābhūtaṃ prajānāti? yo 'syā eva tṛṣṇāyāḥ paunarbhavikyā nandīrāgasahagatāyās tatratatrābhinandinyā aśeṣaprahāṇaṃ pratinisargo vāntiḥ kṣayo virāgo nirodho vyupaśamo 'staṅgamaḥ, evam ucyate duḥkhanirodhaṃ yathābhūtaṃ prajānātīti.

kathaṃ ca duḥkhanirodhagāminīṃ pratipadaṃ yathābhūtaṃ prajānāti? yadutāryāṣṭāṅgo mārgaḥ, samyagdṛṣṭir yāvat samyaksamādhir ity aṣṭau. evam ucyate duḥkhanirodhagāminīṃ pratipadaṃ yathābhūtaṃ prajānātīti.

bhikṣo duḥkhaṃ yathābhūtaṃ parijñātavyam, duḥkhasamudayaḥ prahātavyaḥ, duḥkhanirodhaḥ sākṣātkartavyaḥ, duḥkhanirodhagāminī pratipad bhāvayitavyā. yadā bhikṣur duḥkhaṃ yathābhūtaṃ parijānāti, duḥkhasamudayaṃ prajahāti, duḥkhanirodhaṃ sākṣātkaroti, duḥkhanirodhagāminīṃ pratipadaṃ bhāvayati, ayam ucyate bhikṣuḥ kṣīṇāsravaś chinnabandhanaḥ samyagjñānenāntam akārṣīd duḥkhasyeti.

idam avocad bhagavān. āttamanasas te bhikṣavo bhagavato bhāṣitam abhyanandiṣuḥ.
