Madhyama Āgama 9 — saptarathasūktam — The Seven Chariots

evaṃ mayā śrutam — ekasmin samaye bhagavān rājagṛhe vyahārṣīd veṇuvane karaṇḍakanivāpe.

mahatā bhikṣusaṃghena sārdhaṃ varṣām upāgamat. āyuṣmān api pūrṇo maitrāyaṇīputro jātibhūmau varṣām upāgamat.

tena khalu samayena jātibhūmikā bhikṣavo varṣāṃ vāsam upagamya trayāṇāṃ māsānām atyayāt, kṛtacīvarā ādāyāpattacīvaraṃ jātibhūmyā yena rājagṛhaṃ tena prakrāman. anupūrveṇa cārikāṃ caramāṇā yena rājagṛhaṃ veṇuvanaṃ karaṇḍakanivāpas tenopajagmuḥ, upetya rājagṛhe viharanti sma veṇuvane karaṇḍakanivāpe. athate jātibhūmikā bhikṣavo yena bhagavāṃs tenopajagmuḥ, upetya bhagavatpādau śirasā vanditvaikānte niṣeduḥ.

tān bhagavān apṛcchat — “kuta āgacchatha bhikṣavaḥ, kutra ca varṣām upāgamata” iti?

jātibhūmikā bhikṣavo bhagavantam avocan — “jātibhūmyā āgacchāmo bhagavan, jātibhūmau ca varṣām upāgamāmeti.”

bhagavān apṛcchat — “tatra jātibhūmau bhikṣubhiḥ ko bhikṣuḥ sabrahmacāribhir evam abhiṣṭutaḥ — 'ātmanā cālpecchaḥ saṃtuṣṭo 'lpecchasaṃtuṣṭikathāyāś ca kartā, ātmanā ca praviviktaḥ prāvivekyakathāyāś ca kartā, ātmanā cārabdhavīryo vīryārambhakathāyāś ca kartā, ātmanā copasthitasmṛtiḥ smṛtyupasthānakathāyāś ca kartā, ātmanā ca samāhitaḥ samādhikathāyāś ca kartā, ātmanā ca prajñāvān prajñākathāyāś ca kartā, ātmanā ca kṣīṇāsrava āsravakṣayakathāyāś ca kartā, ātmanā ca sabrahmacāriṇāṃ saṃdarśakaḥ samādāpakaḥ samuttejakaḥ saṃpraharṣakaḥ, sabrahmacāriṇāṃ ca saṃdarśanyāḥ samādāpanyāḥ samuttejanyāḥ saṃpraharṣaṇyāś ca kathāyāḥ karteti?'”

jātibhūmikā bhikṣavo bhagavantam avocan — “āyuṣmān bhagavan pūrṇo maitrāyaṇīputras tatra jātibhūmau sabrahmacāribhir evam abhiṣṭutaḥ — 'ātmanā cālpecchaḥ saṃtuṣṭo 'lpecchasaṃtuṣṭikathāyāś ca kartā, ātmanā ca praviviktaḥ prāvivekyakathāyāś ca kartā, ātmanā cārabdhavīryo vīryārambhakathāyāś ca kartā, ātmanā copasthitasmṛtiḥ smṛtyupasthānakathāyāś ca kartā, ātmanā ca samāhitaḥ samādhikathāyāś ca kartā, ātmanā ca prajñāvān prajñākathāyāś ca kartā, ātmanā ca kṣīṇāsrava āsravakṣayakathāyāś ca kartā, ātmanā ca sabrahmacāriṇāṃ saṃdarśakaḥ samādāpakaḥ samuttejakaḥ saṃpraharṣakaḥ, sabrahmacāriṇāṃ ca saṃdarśanyāḥ samādāpanyāḥ samuttejanyāḥ saṃpraharṣaṇyāś ca kathāyāḥ karteti.'”

tena khalu samayenāyuṣmāñ chāriputras tasyāṃ parṣadi saṃniṣaṇṇo 'bhūt. āyuṣmataḥ śāriputrasyaitad abhavat — “yad bhagavān jātibhūmikān bhikṣūn evaṃ pṛcchati, jātibhūmikāś ca bhikṣava āyuṣmantaṃ pūrṇaṃ maitrāyaṇīputram evam atyartham abhiṣṭuvanti — 'ātmanā cālpecchaḥ saṃtuṣṭo 'lpecchasaṃtuṣṭikathāyāś ca kartā, ātmanā ca praviviktaḥ prāvivekyakathāyāś ca kartā, ātmanā cārabdhavīryo vīryārambhakathāyāś ca kartā, ātmanā copasthitasmṛtiḥ smṛtyupasthānakathāyāś ca kartā, ātmanā ca samāhitaḥ samādhikathāyāś ca kartā, ātmanā ca prajñāvān prajñākathāyāś ca kartā, ātmanā ca kṣīṇāsrava āsravakṣayakathāyāś ca kartā, ātmanā ca sabrahmacāriṇāṃ saṃdarśakaḥ samādāpakaḥ samuttejakaḥ saṃpraharṣakaḥ, sabrahmacāriṇāṃ ca saṃdarśanyāḥ samādāpanyāḥ samuttejanyāḥ saṃpraharṣaṇyāś ca kathāyāḥ karteti.'”

āyuṣmataḥ śāriputrasya punar etad abhavat — “kadācin nāmāsmākam āyuṣmatā pūrṇena maitrāyaṇīputreṇa sārdhaṃ samāgamaḥ syāt, api nu kañcid evārthaṃ pṛccheyam, api nu me sa pṛṣṭo vyākuryād” iti.

tathāyuṣmān śāriputro 'nyān bhikṣūn apṛcchat — “āyuṣmantaḥ, katamo 'yam āyuṣmān pūrṇo maitrāyaṇīputra” iti?

te bhikṣava āyuṣmantaṃ śāriputram avocan — “evam āyuṣman, yo 'yam āyuṣmān bhagavataḥ purastān niṣaṇṇaḥ, gauravarṇaḥ śukatuṇḍaḥ, eṣa sa” iti.

athāyuṣmān śāriputra āyuṣmataḥ pūrṇasya maitrāyaṇīputrasya varṇasaṃsthānaṃ jñātvā suṣṭhu smṛtau nidadhe.

āyuṣmān pūrṇo maitrāyaṇīputras tasyā rāter atyayāt pūrvāhṇe nivasya pātracīvaram ādāya śrāvastīṃ piṇḍāya prāvikṣat. śrāvastīṃ piṇḍāya caritvā kṛtabhakto bhaktapaścād yathābhuktapratyāntagataḥ pātracīvaraṃ pratiśāmya pādau prakṣālya niṣīdanaṃ skandhe 'vasajya yenāndhavane caṅkramasthānaṃ tenopajagāma.

āyuṣmān api śāriputras tasyā rāter atyayāt pūrvāhṇe nivasya pātracīvaram ādāya śrāvastīṃ piṇḍāya prāvikṣat. śrāvastīṃ piṇḍāya caritvā kṛtabhakto bhaktapaścād yathābhuktapratyāntagataḥ pātracīvaraṃ pratiśāmya pādau prakṣālya niṣīdanaṃ skandhe 'vasajya yenāndhavane caṅkramasthānaṃ tenopajagāma.

athāyuṣmān pūrṇo maitrāyaṇīputro 'ndhavanam anupraprapyaikasmin vṛkṣamūle niṣīdanaṃ prajñāpya nyaṣīdat paryaṅkam ābhujya. āyuṣmān api śāriputro 'ndhavanam anupraprapya āyuṣmataḥ pūrṇasya maitrāyaṇīputrasyāvidūre 'nyatasmin vṛkṣamūle niṣīdanaṃ prajñāpya nyaṣīdat paryaṅkam ābhujya.

athāyuṣmān śāriputraḥ sāyāhne prātisaṃlayanād vyutthāya yenāyuṣmān pūrṇo maitrāyaṇīputras tenopajagāma, upetyāyuṣmatā pūrṇena maitrāyaṇīputreṇa sārdhaṃ sammodanīṃ saṃrañjanīṃ vividhāṃ kathāṃ vyatisāryaikānte nyaṣīdat. ekāntaniṣaṇṇa āyuṣmān śāriputra āyuṣmantaṃ pūrṇaṃ maitrāyaṇīputram idam avocat — “kiṃ nu, āyuṣman, śramaṇe gautame brahmacaryaṃ caryata” iti?

sa āha — “evam, āyuṣman.”

“kiṃ nu khv āyuṣman śīlaviśuddhyarthaṃ śramaṇe gautame brahmacaryaṃ caryata” iti?

sa āha — “no hīdam, āyuṣman.”

“kiṃ nu khv āyuṣmaṃś cittaviśuddhyartham, dṛṣṭiviśuddhyartham, kāṅkṣāvitaraṇaviśuddhyartham, mārgāmārgajñānadarśanaviśuddhyartham, pratipajjñānadarśanaviśuddhyartham, jñānadarśanaviśuddhyarthaṃ śramaṇe gautame brahmacaryaṃ caryata” iti?

sa āha — “no hīdam, āyuṣman.”

punar apy apṛcchat — “yadā me, āyuṣman, pṛṣṭaḥ — 'kiṃ nu khv āyuṣman, śramaṇe gautame brahmacaryaṃ caryata' iti, tadā bravīṣi 'evam, āyuṣman' iti. yadā pṛṣṭaḥ — 'kiṃ nu khv āyuṣman, śīlaviśuddhyarthaṃ śramaṇe gautame brahmacaryaṃ caryata' iti, tadā bravīṣi 'no hīdam, āyuṣman' iti. 'kiṃ nu khv āyuṣmaṃś cittaviśuddhyartham, dṛṣṭiviśuddhyartham, kāṅkṣāvitaraṇaviśuddhyartham, mārgāmārgajñānadarśanaviśuddhyartham, pratipajjñānadarśanaviśuddhyartham, jñānadarśanaviśuddhyarthaṃ śramaṇe gautame brahmacaryaṃ caryata' iti, tadā bravīṣi 'no hīdam, āyuṣman' iti. atha kimartham, āyuṣman, śramaṇe gautame brahmacaryaṃ caryata” iti?

sa āha — “anupadhiśeṣanirvāṇārthaṃ khv āyuṣman, śramaṇe gautame brahmacaryaṃ caryate.”

punar apy apṛcchat — “kiṃ nu khv āyuṣman, śīlaviśuddhyā śramaṇo gautamo 'nupadhiśeṣanirvāṇaṃ prajñapayati” iti?

sa āha — “no hīdam, āyuṣman.”

“kiṃ nu khv āyuṣmaṃś cittaviśuddhyā, dṛṣṭiviśuddhyā, kāṅkṣāvitaraṇaviśuddhyā, mārgāmārgajñānadarśanaviśuddhyā, pratipajjñānadarśanaviśuddhyā, jñānadarśanaviśuddhyā śramaṇo gautamo 'nupadhiśeṣanirvāṇaṃ prajñapayati” iti?

sa āha — “no hīdam, āyuṣman.”

punar apy apṛcchat — “yadā me pṛṣṭo bhavān — 'kiṃ nu khv āyuṣman, śīlaviśuddhyā śramaṇo gautamo 'nupadhiśeṣanirvāṇaṃ prajñapayatīti', tadā bhavān bravīti 'no' iti. yadā pṛṣṭaḥ — 'kiṃ nu khv āyuṣmaṃś cittaviśuddhyā, dṛṣṭiviśuddhyā, kāṅkṣāvitaraṇaviśuddhyā, mārgāmārgajñānadarśanaviśuddhyā, pratipajjñānadarśanaviśuddhyā, jñānadarśanaviśuddhyā śramaṇo gautamo 'nupadhiśeṣanirvāṇaṃ prajñapayatīti', tadā bhavān bravīti 'no' iti. atha bhavato bhāṣitasyārthaḥ kathaṃ draṣṭavyaḥ, kathaṃ vā vijñeya” iti?

sa āha — “yady āyuṣman, śīlaviśuddhyā bhagavāñ chramaṇo gautamo 'nupadhiśeṣanirvāṇaṃ prajñapayet, sopadhiśeṣam evānupadhiśeṣaṃ prajñapayet. yadi cittaviśuddhyā, dṛṣṭiviśuddhyā, kāṅkṣāvitaraṇaviśuddhyā, mārgāmārgajñānadarśanaviśuddhyā, pratipajjñānadarśanaviśuddhyā, jñānadarśanaviśuddhyā bhagavāñ chramaṇo gautamo 'nupadhiśeṣanirvāṇaṃ prajñapayet, sopadhiśeṣam evānupadhiśeṣaṃ prajñapayet.

“yady āyuṣman, ebhir dharmair vinā bhagavān anupadhiśeṣanirvāṇaṃ prajñapayet, pṛthagjano 'pi parinirvāyāt, tathā hi pṛthagjano 'py etair dharmair virahitaḥ.

“api tv āyuṣman, śīlaviśuddhāyāś cittaviśuddhir arthaḥ. cittaviśuddhyā dṛṣṭiviśuddhir arthaḥ. dṛṣṭiviśuddhyā kāṅkṣāvitaraṇaviśuddhir arthaḥ. kāṅkṣāvitaraṇaviśuddhyā mārgāmārgajñānadarśanaviśuddhir arthaḥ. mārgāmārgajñānadarśanaviśuddhyā pratipajjñānadarśanaviśuddhir arthaḥ. pratipajjñānadarśanaviśuddhyā jñānadarśanaviśuddhir arthaḥ. jñānadarśanaviśuddhyartham anupadhiśeṣanirvāṇaṃ bhagavatā śramaṇena gautamena prajñaptam.

“tac chṛṇv āyuṣman. bhūtapūrvaṃ rājā prasenajit kauśalaḥ śrāvastīṃ nivasanaḥ sākete kenacid evotpannena kāryeṇa. tasyaitad abhavat — 'kena nv ahaṃ paryāyeṇaikāhnā śrāvastiyāḥ sāketaṃ gaccheyam' iti? tasya punar etad abhavat — 'yan nv ahaṃ śrāvastiyāḥ sāketasyāntarāle saptarathān avasthāpayeyam' iti.

“so 'ntarā śrāvastīṃ sāketaṃ ca saptarathān avasthāpya, śrāvastiyā niṣkramya prathamaṃ ratham abhiruroha. prathamena rathena dvitīyaṃ ratham anupraprapya prathamaṃ ratham avajahau. dvitīyam abhiruhya dvitīyena rathena tṛtīyaṃ ratham anupraprapya dvitīyaṃ ratham avajahau. tṛtīyam abhiruhya tṛtīyena rathena caturthaṃ ratham anupraprapya tṛtīyaṃ ratham avajahau. caturtham abhiruhya caturthena rathena pañcamaṃ ratham anupraprapya caturthaṃ ratham avajahau. pañcamam abhiruhya pañcamena rathena ṣaṣṭhaṃ ratham anupraprapya pañcamaṃ ratham avajahau. ṣaṣṭham abhiruhya ṣaṣṭhena rathena saptamaṃ ratham anupraprapya ṣaṣṭhaṃ ratham avajahau. saptamam abhiruhya saptamena rathenaikāhnā sāketaṃ prāpat.

“sa sākete tat kāryaṃ sampādyāmātyaparivṛto rājakule nyaṣīdat. tam amātyā evam avocan — 'kiṃ nu deva, ekāhnā śrāvastiyāḥ sāketaṃ prāpta' iti?

rājāha — 'evam' iti.

'kiṃ nu deva, prathamena rathenaikāhnā śrāvastiyāḥ sāketaṃ prāpta' iti?

rājāha — 'no hīdam' iti.

'dvitīyena tṛtīyena yāvat saptamena rathenaikāhnā śrāvastiyāḥ sāketaṃ prāpta' iti?

rājāha — 'no hīdam' iti.

“katham, āyuṣman, rājā prasenajit kauśalo 'mātyaiḥ pṛṣṭaḥ san samyag vyākurvāṇo vyākuryāt?

nanv evam rājāmātyānāṃ vyākuryāt — 'aham iha śrāvastīṃ nivasantaḥ sākete kenacid evotpannena kāryeṇa. tasyāham etad abhavat — kena nv ahaṃ paryāyeṇaikāhnā śrāvastiyāḥ sāketaṃ gaccheyam iti? tasya me punar etad abhavat — yan nv ahaṃ śrāvastiyāḥ sāketasyāntarāle saptarathān avasthāpayeyam iti. so 'ham antarā śrāvastīṃ sāketaṃ ca saptarathān avasthāpya, śrāvastiyā niṣkramya prathamaṃ ratham abhiruroha. prathamena rathena dvitīyaṃ ratham anupraprapya prathamaṃ ratham avajahau. dvitīyam abhiruhya dvitīyena rathena tṛtīyaṃ ratham anupraprapya dvitīyaṃ ratham avajahau. tṛtīyam abhiruhya tṛtīyena rathena caturthaṃ ratham anupraprapya tṛtīyaṃ ratham avajahau. caturtham abhiruhya caturthena rathena pañcamaṃ ratham anupraprapya caturthaṃ ratham avajahau. pañcamam abhiruhya pañcamena rathena ṣaṣṭhaṃ ratham anupraprapya pañcamaṃ ratham avajahau. ṣaṣṭham abhiruhya ṣaṣṭhena rathena saptamaṃ ratham anupraprapya ṣaṣṭhaṃ ratham avajahau. saptamam abhiruhya saptamena rathenaikāhnā sāketaṃ prāpadam iti.'

“evam āyuṣman rājā prasenajit kauśalo 'mātyānāṃ samyag vyākurvāṇo vyākuryāt.

evam evāyuṣman śīlaviśuddhāyāś cittaviśuddhir arthaḥ. cittaviśuddhyā dṛṣṭiviśuddhir arthaḥ. dṛṣṭiviśuddhyā kāṅkṣāvitaraṇaviśuddhir arthaḥ. kāṅkṣāvitaraṇaviśuddhyā mārgāmārgajñānadarśanaviśuddhir arthaḥ. mārgāmārgajñānadarśanaviśuddhyā pratipajjñānadarśanaviśuddhir arthaḥ. pratipajjñānadarśanaviśuddhyā jñānadarśanaviśuddhir arthaḥ. jñānadarśanaviśuddhyartham anupadhiśeṣanirvāṇaṃ bhagavatā prajñaptam.”

athāyuṣmān śāriputra āyuṣmantaṃ pūrṇaṃ maitrāyaṇīputram apṛcchat — “ko nāmāyuṣmān, kathaṃ cāyuṣmantaṃ sabrahmacāriṇo jānanti” iti?

āyuṣmān pūrṇo maitrāyaṇīputra āha — “pūrṇa ity āyuṣman me nāma. mātā me maitrāyaṇī nāma, tasmān māṃ sabrahmacāriṇaḥ pūrṇo maitrāyaṇīputra iti jānanti.”

āyuṣmān śāriputras tuṣṭāva — “sādhu sādhu, āyuṣman. yathānyāyam āyuṣmatā pūrṇena maitrāyaṇīputreṇa tathāgataśrāvakeṇa jñāninā pratibhānavatā paṇḍitena niścitena kṣemiṇābhayena sampannena dāntena, dṛṣṭe dharme 'mṛtadhātuṃ svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtvopasaṃpadya viharatā mahāpratibhānam amṛtadhvajaṃ cāsādya vyākṛtam. yad imān evaṃ gaṃbhīrān praśnān pṛṣṭaḥ san samyag vyākaroti.

“lābhā āyuṣman sabrahmacāriṇāṃ sulabdhās taiḥ, ye labhanta āyuṣmantaṃ pūrṇaṃ maitrāyaṇīputraṃ kālena kālaṃ darśanāya kālena kālam upasaṃkramaṇāya payupāsanāya.

mama cāpi sulabdhā lābhāḥ, yo 'haṃ labhe 'dyāyuṣmantaṃ pūrṇaṃ maitrāyaṇīputraṃ darśanāya payupāsanāya.

sabrahmacāriṇo hy āyuṣmantaṃ pūrṇaṃ maitrāyaṇīputraṃ celaṇḍukaṃ kṛtvā mūrdhnā dhārayeran, teṣām evaṃ sulabdhā lābhā bhaveyuḥ.

mama cāpi sulabdhā lābhāḥ, yo 'haṃ labhe 'dyāyuṣmantaṃ pūrṇaṃ maitrāyaṇīputraṃ kālena kālaṃ darśanāya payupāsanāya.”

āyuṣmān pūrṇo maitrāyaṇīputra āyuṣmantaṃ śāriputram apṛcchat — “ko nāmāyuṣmān, kathaṃ cāyuṣmantaṃ sabrahmacāriṇo jānanti” iti?

āyuṣmān śāriputra āha — “upatiṣya ity āyuṣman me nāma. mātā me śārī nāma, tasmān māṃ sabrahmacāriṇaḥ śāriputra iti jānanti.”

āyuṣmān pūrṇo maitrāyaṇīputras tuṣṭāva — “śāstuḥ śrāvakena sārdhaṃ sammantrayamāṇo na jānāmi. anubuddhena sārdhaṃ sammantrayamāṇo na jānāmi. dharmasenāpatinā sārdhaṃ sammantrayamāṇo na jānāmi. anuvartitadharmacakraśrāvakena sārdhaṃ sammantrayamāṇo na jānāmi.

yady aham āyuṣmantaṃ śāriputraṃ jāneyam, ekam api padaṃ na prativyākuryām, prāg evetāvad gaṃbhīraṃ sammantraṇam.

“sādhu sādhu. yathānyāyam āyuṣmatā śāriputreṇa tathāgataśrāvakeṇa jñāninā pratibhānavatā paṇḍitena niścitena kṣemiṇābhayena sampannena dāntena, dṛṣṭe dharme 'mṛtadhātuṃ svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtvopasaṃpadya viharatā mahāpratibhānam amṛtadhvajaṃ cāsādya yuktāny uktāni. yad imān evaṃ gaṃbhīrān praśnān pṛcchati.

“lābhā āyuṣman sabrahmacāriṇāṃ sulabdhās taiḥ, ye labhanta āyuṣmantaṃ śāriputraṃ kālena kālaṃ darśanāya kālena kālam upasaṃkramaṇāya payupāsanāya.

mama cāpi sulabdhā lābhāḥ, yo 'haṃ labhe 'dyāyuṣmantaṃ śāriputraṃ darśanāya payupāsanāya.

sabrahmacāriṇo hy āyuṣmantaṃ śāriputraṃ celaṇḍukaṃ kṛtvā mūrdhnā dhārayeran, teṣām evaṃ sulabdhā lābhā bhaveyuḥ.

mama cāpi sulabdhā lābhāḥ, yo 'haṃ labhe 'dyāyuṣmantaṃ śāriputraṃ kālena kālaṃ darśanāya payupāsanāya.”

evam ubhāv āyuṣmantāv anyonyasyābhiṣṭutya, anyonyasya subhāṣitaṃ samanumodya samanujñāyāttamanasau parasparasya bhāṣitam abhyanandatām. utthāyāsanāt svakāśramaṃ prakrāntau.
