evaṃ mayā śrutam — ekasmin samaye bhagavān śrāvastyāṃ viharati sma jetavane anāthapiṇḍadasya ārāme .
tena khalu punaḥ samayena ariṣṭhasya nāma bhikṣoḥ gṛdhravyādhapūrvasya evaṃrūpaṃ pāpakaṃ dṛṣṭigataṃ utpannaṃ bhavati — tathā ahaṃ bhagavatā dharmaṃ deśitam ājānāmi yathā ye ime āntarāyikāḥ dharmāḥ uktāḥ bhagavatā tān pratisevamānasya na alaṃ antarāyāya iti .
aśrauṣuḥ khalu saṃbahulāḥ bhikṣavaḥ — ariṣṭhasya kila nāma bhikṣoḥ gṛdhravyādhapūrvasya evaṃrūpaṃ pāpakaṃ dṛṣṭigataṃ utpannam — tathā ahaṃ bhagavatā dharmaṃ deśitam ājānāmi yathā ye ime āntarāyikāḥ dharmāḥ uktāḥ bhagavatā tān pratisevamānasya na alaṃ antarāyāya iti . atha khalu te bhikṣavaḥ ariṣṭhaṃ bhikṣuṃ gṛdhravyādhapūrvam upasaṃcakramuḥ ; upasaṃkramya ariṣṭhaṃ bhikṣuṃ gṛdhravyādhapūrvam etad avocan — satyaṃ kila te, āyuṣman ariṣṭha, evaṃrūpaṃ pāpakaṃ dṛṣṭigataṃ utpannam — tathā ahaṃ bhagavatā dharmaṃ deśitam ājānāmi yathā ye ime āntarāyikāḥ dharmāḥ uktāḥ bhagavatā tān pratisevamānasya na alaṃ antarāyāya iti .

evam api khalu ariṣṭhaḥ bhikṣuḥ gṛdhravyādhapūrvaḥ taiḥ bhikṣubhiḥ samanuyujyamānaḥ samanugāhyamānaḥ samanubhāṣyamānaḥ tad eva pāpakaṃ dṛṣṭigataṃ sthāmnā parāmṛśya abhiniviśya vyavaharati — evaṃ vai khalu aham, āyuṣmantaḥ, bhagavatā dharmaṃ deśitam ājānāmi yathā ye ime āntarāyikāḥ dharmāḥ uktāḥ bhagavatā tān pratisevamānasya na alaṃ antarāyāya iti .

atha khalu bhagavān anyatamaṃ bhikṣum āmantrayata — ehi tvam, bhikṣo, mama vacanena ariṣṭhaṃ bhikṣuṃ gṛdhravyādhapūrvam āmantraya — śāstā tvām, āyuṣman ariṣṭha, āmantrayati iti .
evam, bhadanta iti khalu saḥ bhikṣuḥ bhagavataḥ pratiśrutya, ariṣṭhaṃ bhikṣuṃ gṛdhravyādhapūrvam upasaṃcakrāma ; upasaṃkramya ariṣṭhaṃ bhikṣuṃ gṛdhravyādhapūrvam etad avocat — śāstā tvām, āyuṣman ariṣṭha, āmantrayati iti .

atha khalu bhagavān bhikṣūn āmantrayata — tat kiṃ manyadhve, bhikṣavaḥ, api nu ayaṃ ariṣṭhaḥ bhikṣuḥ gṛdhravyādhapūrvaḥ uṣmīkṛtaḥ api asmin dharmavinaye iti ?
kiṃ hi syāt, bhadanta ; no etat, bhadanta iti . evam ukte, ariṣṭhaḥ bhikṣuḥ gṛdhravyādhapūrvaḥ tūṣṇīmbhūtaḥ maṅkubhūtaḥ srastaskandhaḥ adhomukhaḥ pradhyāyan apratibhānaḥ nyaṣīdat .
atha khalu bhagavān ariṣṭhaṃ bhikṣuṃ gṛdhravyādhapūrvaṃ tūṣṇīmbhūtaṃ maṅkubhūtaṃ srastaskandham adhomukhaṃ pradhyāyantam apratibhānaṃ viditvā ariṣṭhaṃ bhikṣuṃ gṛdhravyādhapūrvam etad avocat — prajñāsyase khalu tvam, moghapuruṣa, etena svakena pāpakena dṛṣṭigatena . iha ahaṃ bhikṣūn pratiprakṣyāmi iti .
atha khalu bhagavān bhikṣūn āmantrayata — yūyam api me, bhikṣavaḥ, evaṃ dharmaṃ deśitam ājānītha yathā ayaṃ ariṣṭhaḥ bhikṣuḥ gṛdhravyādhapūrvaḥ ātmanā durgṛhītena asmān ca eva abhyācaṣṭe, ātmānaṃ ca khanati, bahu ca apuṇyaṃ prasavati iti ?
no etat, bhadanta . anekaparyāyena hi naḥ, bhadanta, āntarāyikāḥ dharmāḥ āntarāyikāḥ uktāḥ bhagavatā ; alaṃ ca punas tān pratisevamānasya antarāyāya . alpāsvādāḥ kāmāḥ uktāḥ bhagavatā bahuduḥkhāḥ bahupāyāsāḥ, ādīnavaḥ atra bhūyān . asthikaṅkālopamāḥ kāmāḥ uktāḥ bhagavatā … sarpaśiropamāḥ kāmāḥ uktāḥ bhagavatā bahuduḥkhāḥ bahupāyāsāḥ, ādīnavaḥ atra bhūyān iti .
sādhu sādhu, bhikṣavaḥ, sādhu, khalu me yūyam, bhikṣavaḥ, evaṃ dharmaṃ deśitam ājānītha . anekaparyāyena hi khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, āntarāyikāḥ dharmāḥ uktāḥ mayā, alaṃ ca punas tān pratisevamānasya antarāyāya .
alpāsvādāḥ kāmāḥ uktāḥ mayā, bahuduḥkhāḥ bahupāyāsāḥ, ādīnavaḥ atra bhūyān . asthikaṅkālopamāḥ kāmāḥ uktāḥ mayā … sarpaśiropamāḥ kāmāḥ uktāḥ mayā, bahuduḥkhāḥ bahupāyāsāḥ, ādīnavaḥ atra bhūyān . atha ca punar ayaṃ ariṣṭhaḥ bhikṣuḥ gṛdhravyādhapūrvaḥ ātmanā durgṛhītena asmān ca eva abhyācaṣṭe, ātmānaṃ ca khanati, bahu ca apuṇyaṃ prasavati . tat hi tasya moghapuruṣasya bhaviṣyati dīrgharātram ahitāya duḥkhāya . saḥ vata, bhikṣavaḥ, anyatra eva kāmaiḥ anyatra kāmasaṃjñāyāḥ anyatra kāmavitarkaiḥ kāmān pratiseviṣyate iti — na etad sthānaṃ vidyate .
iha, bhikṣavaḥ, kecit moghapuruṣāḥ dharmaṃ paryāpnuvanti — sūtraṃ, geyaṃ, vyākaraṇaṃ, gāthām, udānam, ityuktakaṃ, jātakam, adbhutadharmaṃ, vaidalyam . te taṃ dharmaṃ paryāpnuvan teṣāṃ dharmāṇāṃ prajñayā arthaṃ na upaparīkṣante . teṣāṃ te dharmāḥ prajñayā artham anupaparīkṣamāṇānāṃ na nidhyānaṃ kṣamante . te upālambhānuśaṃsāḥ ca eva dharmaṃ paryāpnuvanti itivādapramokṣānuśaṃsāḥ ca . yasya ca arthāya dharmaṃ paryāpnuvanti taṃ ca asya arthaṃ na anubhavanti . teṣāṃ te dharmāḥ durgṛhītāḥ dīrgharātram ahitāya duḥkhāya saṃvartante . tat kasya hetoḥ ? durgṛhītatvāt, bhikṣavaḥ, dharmāṇām .
tadyathā api, bhikṣavaḥ, puruṣaḥ alagardārthī alagardagaveṣī alagardaparyeṣaṇaṃ caramāṇaḥ . saḥ paśyet mahāntam alagardam . tam enaṃ bhoge vā lāṅgūle vā gṛhṇīyāt . tasya saḥ alagardaḥ pratiparivartya hastayoḥ vā bāhvoḥ vā anyatarasmin vā aṅgapratyaṅge daṃśet . saḥ tatarnidānaṃ maraṇaṃ vā nigacchet maraṇamātraṃ vā duḥkham . tat kasya hetoḥ ? durgṛhītatvāt, bhikṣavaḥ, alagardasya .

tadyathā api, bhikṣavaḥ, puruṣaḥ alagardārthī alagardagaveṣī alagardaparyeṣaṇaṃ caramāṇaḥ . saḥ paśyet mahāntam alagardam . tam enam ajapadena daṇḍena sunigṛhītaṃ nigṛhṇīyāt . ajapadena daṇḍena sunigṛhītaṃ nigṛhya, grīvāyāṃ sugṛhītaṃ gṛhṇīyāt . yadyapi saḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, alagardaḥ tasya puruṣasya hastaṃ vā bāhuṃ vā anyataraṃ vā aṅgapratyaṅgaṃ bhogaiḥ pariveṣṭayet, atha khalu saḥ na eva tatarnidānaṃ maraṇaṃ vā nigacchet maraṇamātraṃ vā duḥkham . tat kasya hetoḥ ? sugṛhītatvāt, bhikṣavaḥ, alagardasya .

tasmāt iha, bhikṣavaḥ, yasya me bhāṣitasya artham ājānīyāta, tathā enaṃ dhārayeta . yasya ca punar me bhāṣitasya arthaṃ na ājānīyāta, ahaṃ vaḥ tatra pratipraṣṭavyaḥ, ye vā punar syuḥ vyaktāḥ bhikṣavaḥ .
kullopamaṃ vaḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, dharmaṃ deśayiṣyāmi nistaraṇārthāya, no grahaṇārthāya . taṃ śṛṇuta, sādhu manasi kuruta, bhāṣiṣye iti .
evam, bhadanta iti khalu te bhikṣavaḥ bhagavataḥ pratyaśrauṣuḥ . bhagavān etad avocat —
tadyathā api, bhikṣavaḥ, puruṣaḥ adhvānamārgapratipannaḥ . saḥ paśyet mahāntam udakārṇavam, avāratīraṃ sāśaṅkaṃ sapratibhayam, pāratīraṃ kṣemam apratibhayam ; na ca asya nauḥ saṃtāraṇī uttaraśetuḥ vā apārāt pāraṃ gamanāya . tasya evaṃ syāt — ayaṃ khalu mahodakārṇavaḥ, avāratīraṃ sāśaṅkaṃ sapratibhayam, pāratīraṃ kṣemam apratibhayam ; na asti ca nauḥ saṃtāraṇī uttaraśetuḥ vā apārāt pāraṃ gamanāya . yat nūnam ahaṃ tṛṇakāṣṭhaśākhāpalāśaṃ saṃkṛṣya, kullaṃ baddhvā, taṃ kullaṃ niśritya hastābhyāṃ ca pādābhyāṃ ca vyāyamamānaḥ svasti pāram uttareyam iti . atha khalu saḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, puruṣaḥ tṛṇakāṣṭhaśākhāpalāśaṃ saṃkṛṣya, kullaṃ baddhvā taṃ kullaṃ niśritya hastābhyāṃ ca pādābhyāṃ ca vyāyamamānaḥ svasti pāram uttaret . tasya puruṣasya uttīrṇasya pāraṃgatasya evaṃ syāt — bahukāraḥ khalu me ayaṃ kullaḥ ; imam ahaṃ kullaṃ niśritya hastābhyāṃ ca pādābhyāṃ ca vyāyamamānaḥ svasti pāram uttīrṇaḥ . yat nūnam aham imaṃ kullaṃ śirasi vā āropya skandhe vā udhṛtya yena kāmaṃ prakrāmeyam iti .
tat kiṃ manyadhve, bhikṣavaḥ, api nu saḥ puruṣaḥ evaṃkārī tasmin kulle kṛtyakārī syāt iti ?

kathaṃkārī ca saḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, puruṣaḥ tasmin kulle kṛtyakārī syāt ? iha, bhikṣavaḥ, tasya puruṣasya uttīrṇasya pāraṃgatasya evaṃ syāt — bahukāraḥ khalu me ayaṃ kullaḥ ; imam ahaṃ kullaṃ niśritya hastābhyāṃ ca pādābhyāṃ ca vyāyamamānaḥ svasti pāram uttīrṇaḥ . yat nūnam aham imaṃ kullaṃ sthale vā utsādya udake vā plāvayitvā yena kāmaṃ prakrāmeyam iti . evaṃkārī khalu saḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, puruṣaḥ tasmin kulle kṛtyakārī syāt .

evaṃ svākhyātaḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, mayā dharmaḥ uttānaḥ vivṛtaḥ prakāśitaḥ chinnapilotikaḥ . evaṃ svākhyāte, bhikṣavaḥ, mayā dharme uttāne vivṛte prakāśite chinnapilotike ye te bhikṣavaḥ dharmānusāriṇaḥ śraddhānusāriṇaḥ sarve te saṃbodhiparāyaṇāḥ .
