madhyamanikāyaḥ 35 - kṣudrasatyakasūtram

evaṃ mayā śrutam — ekasmin samaye bhagavān vaiśālyāṃ viharati sma mahāvane kūṭāgāraśālāyām .

tena khalu punaḥ samayena satyakaḥ nirgranthaputraḥ vaiśālyāṃ prativasati bhāṣyapravādakaḥ paṇḍitavādaḥ sādhusammataḥ bahujanasya . saḥ vaiśālyāṃ pariṣadi evaṃ vācaṃ bhāṣate — na ahaṃ taṃ paśyāmi śramaṇaṃ vā brāhmaṇaṃ vā, saṃghinaṃ gaṇinaṃ gaṇācāryam, api arhantaṃ samyaksambuddhaṃ pratijānānam, yaḥ mayā vādena vādaṃ samārabdhaḥ na saṃkampeta na sampakampeta na sampavyatheta, yasya na kakṣebhyaḥ svedāḥ mucyeyuḥ . sthūṇāṃ cet api aham acetanāṃ vādena vādaṃ samārabheyam, sā api mayā vādena vādaṃ samārabdhā saṃkampeta sampakampeta sampavyatheta . kaḥ punaḥ vādaḥ manuṣyabhūtasya iti ?

atha khalu āyuṣmān aśvajit pūrvāhṇasamaye paridhāya pātracīvaram ādāya vaiśālīṃ piṇḍāya prāvikṣat . adrākṣīt khalu satyakaḥ nirgranthaputraḥ vaiśālyāṃ jaṅghāvihāram anucaṅkraman anuvicaran āyuṣmantam aśvajitaṃ dūrataḥ eva āgacchantam . dṛṣṭvā āyuṣmantam aśvajitam upasaṃcakrāma ; upasaṃkramya āyuṣmatā aśvajitā sārdhaṃ samamodata .

saṃmodanīyāṃ kathāṃ smāraṇīyāṃ vyatisārya ekānte atiṣṭhat . ekānte sthitaḥ khalu satyakaḥ nirgranthaputraḥ āyuṣmantam aśvajitam etad avocat — kathaṃ punaḥ, bhoḥ aśvajit, śramaṇaḥ gautamaḥ śrāvakān vineti, kathaṃbhāgā ca punaḥ śramaṇasya gautamasya śrāvakeṣu anuśāsanī bahulā pravartate iti ?

evaṃ khalu, agniveśyāyana, bhagavān śrāvakān vineti, evaṃbhāgā ca punaḥ bhagavataḥ śrāvakeṣu anuśāsanī bahulā pravartate — rūpam, bhikṣavaḥ, anityam, vedanā anityā, saṃjñā anityā, saṃskārāḥ anityāḥ, vijñānam anityam . rūpam, bhikṣavaḥ, anātmā, vedanā anātmā, saṃjñā anātmā, saṃskārāḥ anātmānaḥ, vijñānam anātmā . sarve saṃskārāḥ anityāḥ, sarve dharmāḥ anātmānaḥ iti . evaṃ khalu, agniveśyāyana, bhagavān śrāvakān vineti, evaṃbhāgā ca punaḥ bhagavataḥ śrāvakeṣu anuśāsanī bahulā pravartate iti .

duḥśrutaṃ vata, bhoḥ aśvajit, aśrauṣma ye vayam evaṃvādinaṃ śramaṇaṃ gautamam aśrauṣma . api eva nāma vayaṃ kadācit karhicit tena bhavatā gautamena sārdhaṃ samāgacchema, api eva nāma syāt kaḥ cid eva kathāsaṃlāpaḥ, api eva nāma tasmāt pāpakāt dṛṣṭigatāt vivecayema iti .

tena khalu punaḥ samayena pañcamātrāṇi licchaviśatāni saṃsthāgāre saṃnipatitāni bhavanti kenacid eva karaṇīyena . atha khalu satyakaḥ nirgranthaputraḥ tān licchavīn upasaṃcakrāma ; upasaṃkramya tān licchavīn etad avocat — abhikrāmantu bhavantaḥ licchavayaḥ, abhikrāmantu bhavantaḥ licchavayaḥ, adya me śramaṇena gautamena sārdhaṃ kathāsaṃlāpaḥ bhaviṣyati . sacet me śramaṇaḥ gautamaḥ tathā pratiṣṭhāsyati yathā ca me jñātānyatarena śrāvakena aśvajitā nāma bhikṣuṇā pratiṣṭhitam, tadyathā api nāma balavān puruṣaḥ dīrghalomikam eḍakaṃ lomasu gṛhītvā ākarṣet parikarṣet samparikarṣet ; evam eva ahaṃ śramaṇaṃ gautamaṃ vādena vādaṃ ākarṣiṣyāmi parikarṣiṣyāmi samparikarṣiṣyāmi . tadyathā api nāma balavān śauṇḍikākarmakāraḥ mahāntaṃ śauṇḍikākilañjaṃ gabhīre udakahrade prakṣipya karṇe gṛhītvā ākarṣet parikarṣet samparikarṣet ; evam eva ahaṃ śramaṇaṃ gautamaṃ vādena vādaṃ ākarṣiṣyāmi parikarṣiṣyāmi samparikarṣiṣyāmi . tadyathā api nāma balavān śauṇḍikādhūrtaḥ vālaṃ karṇe gṛhītvā avadhūnuyāt nirdhūnuyāt niṣphoṭayet ; evam eva ahaṃ śramaṇaṃ gautamaṃ vādena vādam avadhūniṣyāmi nirdhūniṣyāmi niṣphoṭayiṣyāmi . tadyathā api nāma kuñjaraḥ ṣaṣṭihāyanaḥ gabhīrāṃ puṣkariṇīm avagāhya śāṇadhauvikaṃ nāma krīḍitajātaṃ krīḍati ; evam eva ahaṃ śramaṇaṃ gautamaṃ śāṇadhauvikaṃ manye krīḍitajātaṃ krīḍiṣyāmi . abhikrāmantu bhavantaḥ licchavayaḥ, abhikrāmantu bhavantaḥ licchavayaḥ, adya me śramaṇena gautamena sārdhaṃ kathāsaṃlāpaḥ bhaviṣyati iti .

tatra eke licchavayaḥ evam āhuḥ — kiṃ śramaṇaḥ gautamaḥ satyakasya nirgranthaputrasya vādam āropayiṣyati, atha khalu satyakaḥ nirgranthaputraḥ śramaṇasya gautamasya vādam āropayiṣyati iti ?

eke licchavayaḥ evam āhuḥ — kiṃ saḥ bhavamānaḥ satyakaḥ nirgranthaputraḥ yaḥ bhagavataḥ vādam āropayiṣyati, atha khalu bhagavān satyakasya nirgranthaputrasya vādam āropayiṣyati iti ?

atha khalu satyakaḥ nirgranthaputraḥ pañcamātraiḥ licchaviśataiḥ parivṛtaḥ mahāvane kūṭāgāraśālām upasaṃcakrāma .

tena khalu punaḥ samayena sambahulāḥ bhikṣavaḥ abhyavakāśe caṅkramyante . atha khalu satyakaḥ nirgranthaputraḥ tān bhikṣūn upasaṃcakrāma ; upasaṃkramya tān bhikṣūn etad avocat — kva nu khalu, bhoḥ, etarhi saḥ bhavān gautamaḥ viharati ? darśanakāmāḥ hi vayaṃ taṃ bhavantaṃ gautamam iti .

eṣaḥ, agniveśyāyana, bhagavān mahāvanam adhyavagāhya anyatarasmin vṛkṣamūle divāvihāraṃ niṣaṇṇaḥ iti .

atha khalu satyakaḥ nirgranthaputraḥ mahatyā licchavipariṣadā sārdhaṃ mahāvanam adhyavagāhya bhagavantam upasaṃcakrāma ; upasaṃkramya bhagavatā sārdhaṃ samamodata . saṃmodanīyāṃ kathāṃ smāraṇīyāṃ vyatisārya ekānte nyaṣīdat . te api khalu licchavayaḥ api eke bhagavantam abhivādya ekānte nyaṣīdan, api eke bhagavatā sārdhaṃ samamodanta, saṃmodanīyāṃ kathāṃ smāraṇīyāṃ vyatisārya ekānte nyaṣīdan . api eke bhagavantaṃ añjalinā praṇamya ekānte nyaṣīdan, api eke bhagavataḥ antike nāmagotraṃ śrāvayitvā ekānte nyaṣīdan, api eke tūṣṇībhūtāḥ ekānte nyaṣīdan .

ekānte niṣaṇṇaḥ khalu satyakaḥ nirgranthaputraḥ bhagavantam etad avocat — pṛccheyam ahaṃ bhavantaṃ gautamaṃ kiṃcid eva deśam, sacet me bhavān gautamaḥ avakāśaṃ karoti praśnasya vyākaraṇāya iti .

pṛccha, agniveśyāyana, yad ākāṅkṣasi iti .

kathaṃ punaḥ bhavān gautamaḥ śrāvakān vineti, kathaṃbhāgā ca punaḥ bhavataḥ gautamasya śrāvakeṣu anuśāsanī bahulā pravartate iti ?

evaṃ khalu aham, agniveśyāyana, śrāvakān vinemi, evaṃbhāgā ca punaḥ me śrāvakeṣu anuśāsanī bahulā pravartate — rūpam, bhikṣavaḥ, anityam, vedanā anityā, saṃjñā anityā, saṃskārāḥ anityāḥ, vijñānam anityam . rūpam, bhikṣavaḥ, anātmā, vedanā anātmā, saṃjñā anātmā, saṃskārāḥ anātmānaḥ, vijñānam anātmā . sarve saṃskārāḥ anityāḥ, sarve dharmāḥ anātmānaḥ iti . evaṃ khalu aham, agniveśyāyana, śrāvakān vinemi, evaṃbhāgā ca punaḥ me śrāvakeṣu anuśāsanī bahulā pravartate iti .

upamā mām, bhoḥ gautama, pratibhāti iti .

pratibhātu tvām, agniveśyāyana iti bhagavān avocat .

tadyathā api, bhoḥ gautama, ye kecit ime bījagrāmabhūtagrāmāḥ vṛddhiṃ virūḍhiṃ vaipulyam āpadyante, sarve te pṛthivīṃ niśritya pṛthivyāṃ pratiṣṭhāya . evam ete bījagrāmabhūtagrāmāḥ vṛddhiṃ virūḍhiṃ vaipulyam āpadyante . tadyathā vā punaḥ, bhoḥ gautama, ye kecit ime balakaraṇīyāḥ karmāntāḥ kriyante, sarve te pṛthivīṃ niśritya pṛthivyāṃ pratiṣṭhāya . evam ete balakaraṇīyāḥ karmāntāḥ kriyante .

evam eva khalu, bhoḥ gautama, rūpātmā ayaṃ puruṣapudgalaḥ rūpe pratiṣṭhāya puṇyaṃ vā apuṇyaṃ vā prasūyate, vedanātmā ayaṃ puruṣapudgalaḥ vedanāyāṃ pratiṣṭhāya puṇyaṃ vā apuṇyaṃ vā prasūyate, saṃjñātmā ayaṃ puruṣapudgalaḥ saṃjñāyāṃ pratiṣṭhāya puṇyaṃ vā apuṇyaṃ vā prasūyate, saṃskārātmā ayaṃ puruṣapudgalaḥ saṃskāreṣu pratiṣṭhāya puṇyaṃ vā apuṇyaṃ vā prasūyate, vijñānātmā ayaṃ puruṣapudgalaḥ vijñāne pratiṣṭhāya puṇyaṃ vā apuṇyaṃ vā prasūyate iti .

na nu tvam, agniveśyāyana, evaṃ vadasi — rūpaṃ me ātmā, vedanā me ātmā, saṃjñā me ātmā, saṃskārāḥ me ātmā, vijñānaṃ me ātmā iti ?

aham hi, bhoḥ gautama, evaṃ vadāmi — rūpaṃ me ātmā, vedanā me ātmā, saṃjñā me ātmā, saṃskārāḥ me ātmā, vijñānaṃ me ātmā iti, iyaṃ ca mahatī janatā iti .

kiṃ hi te, agniveśyāyana, mahatī janatā kariṣyati ? iṅgha tvam, agniveśyāyana, svakam eva vādaṃ nirveṣṭhaya iti .

aham hi, bhoḥ gautama, evaṃ vadāmi — rūpaṃ me ātmā, vedanā me ātmā, saṃjñā me ātmā, saṃskārāḥ me ātmā, vijñānaṃ me ātmā iti .

tena hi, agniveśyāyana, tvām eva atra pratiprakṣyāmi, yathā te kṣameta tathā enam vyākuryāḥ . tat kiṃ manyase, agniveśyāyana, varteta rājñaḥ kṣatriyasya mūrdhāvasiktasya svasmin vijite vaśaḥ — ghātayaṃ vā ghātayitum, jñāpayaṃ vā jñāpayitum, pravrājayaṃ vā pravrājayitum, tadyathā api rājñaḥ prasenajitaḥ kauśalasya, tadyathā vā punaḥ rājñaḥ māgadhasya ajātaśatroḥ vaidehīputrasya iti ?

varteta, bhoḥ gautama, rājñaḥ kṣatriyasya mūrdhāvasiktasya svasmin vijite vaśaḥ — ghātayaṃ vā ghātayitum, jñāpayaṃ vā jñāpayitum, pravrājayaṃ vā pravrājayitum, tadyathā api rājñaḥ prasenajitaḥ kauśalasya, tadyathā vā punaḥ rājñaḥ māgadhasya ajātaśatroḥ vaidehīputrasya . eṣām api hi, bhoḥ gautama, saṃghānāṃ gaṇānām — tadyathā idam — vṛjināṃ mallānām — vartate svasmin vijite vaśaḥ — ghātayaṃ vā ghātayitum, jñāpayaṃ vā jñāpayitum, pravrājayaṃ vā pravrājayitum . kiṃ punaḥ rājñaḥ kṣatriyasya mūrdhāvasiktasya, tadyathā api rājñaḥ prasenajitaḥ kauśalasya, tadyathā vā punaḥ rājñaḥ māgadhasya ajātaśatroḥ vaidehīputrasya ? varteta, bhoḥ gautama, vartituṃ ca arhati iti .

tat kiṃ manyase, agniveśyāyana, yat tvam evaṃ vadasi — rūpaṃ me ātmā iti, vartate te tasmin rūpe vaśaḥ — evaṃ me rūpaṃ bhavatu, evaṃ me rūpaṃ mā abhūt iti ? evam ukte, satyakaḥ nirgranthaputraḥ tūṣṇīm abhūt . dvitīyam api khalu bhagavān satyakaṃ nirgranthaputram etad avocat — tat kiṃ manyase, agniveśyāyana, yat tvam evaṃ vadasi — rūpaṃ me ātmā iti, vartate te tasmin rūpe vaśaḥ — evaṃ me rūpaṃ bhavatu, evaṃ me rūpaṃ mā abhūt iti ? dvitīyam api khalu satyakaḥ nirgranthaputraḥ tūṣṇīm abhūt . atha khalu bhagavān satyakaṃ nirgranthaputram etad avocat — vyākuru idānīm, agniveśyāyana, na idānīṃ te tūṣṇībhāvasya kālaḥ . yaḥ kaścit, agniveśyāyana, tathāgatena yāvat tṛtīyaṃ sahadhārmikaṃ praśnaṃ pṛṣṭhaḥ na vyākaroti, atra eva asya saptadhā mūrdhā sphuṭati iti .

tena khalu punaḥ samayena vajrapāṇiḥ yakṣaḥ āyasaṃ vajram ādāya ādīptaṃ samprajvalitaṃ sajyotībhūtaṃ satyakasya nirgranthaputrasya uparivihāyasaṃ sthitaḥ bhavati — sacet ayaṃ satyakaḥ nirgranthaputraḥ bhagavatā yāvat tṛtīyaṃ sahadhārmikaṃ praśnaṃ pṛṣṭhaḥ na vyākariṣyati atra eva asya saptadhā mūrdhānaṃ sphāṭayiṣyāmi iti . taṃ khalu punaḥ vajrapāṇiṃ yakṣaṃ bhagavān ca eva paśyati satyakaḥ ca nirgranthaputraḥ .

atha khalu satyakaḥ nirgranthaputraḥ bhītaḥ saṃvignaḥ lomahṛṣṭajātaḥ bhagavantam eva trāṇaṃ gaveṣī bhagavantam eva layanaṃ gaveṣī bhagavantam eva śaraṇaṃ gaveṣī bhagavantam etad avocat — pṛcchatu māṃ bhavān gautamaḥ, vyākariṣyāmi iti .

tat kiṃ manyase, agniveśyāyana, yat tvam evaṃ vadasi — rūpaṃ me ātmā iti, vartate te tasmin rūpe vaśaḥ — evaṃ me rūpaṃ bhavatu, evaṃ me rūpaṃ mā abhūt iti ?

na idam hi, bhoḥ gautama .

manasi kuru, agniveśyāyana ; manasi kṛtvā khalu, agniveśyāyana, vyākuru . na khalu te saṃdhīyate pūrveṇa vā paścimaṃ paścimena vā pūrvam . tat kiṃ manyase, agniveśyāyana, yat tvam evaṃ vadasi — vedanā me ātmā iti, vartate te tasyāṃ vedanāyāṃ vaśaḥ — evaṃ me vedanā bhavatu, evaṃ me vedanā mā abhūt iti ?

yat punar anityaṃ duḥkhaṃ vā tat sukhaṃ vā iti ?

tat kiṃ manyase, agniveśyāyana, yaḥ nu khalu duḥkham ālīnaḥ duḥkham upagataḥ duḥkham adhyavasitaḥ, duḥkhaṃ etad mama, eṣaḥ aham asmi, eṣaḥ me ātmā iti samanupaśyati, api nu khalu saḥ svayaṃ vā duḥkhaṃ parijānīyāt, duḥkhaṃ vā parikṣipya viharet iti ?

kiṃ hi syāt, bhoḥ gautama ? na idam hi, bhoḥ gautama iti .

tat kiṃ manyase, agniveśyāyana, na nu tvam evaṃ sati duḥkham ālīnaḥ duḥkham upagataḥ duḥkham adhyavasitaḥ, duḥkhaṃ etad mama, eṣaḥ aham asmi, eṣaḥ me ātmā iti samanupaśyasi iti ?

kiṃ hi na syāt, bhoḥ gautama ? evam etad, bhoḥ gautama iti .

tadyathā api, agniveśyāyana, puruṣaḥ sārārthikaḥ sāragaveṣī sāraparyeṣaṇaṃ caramāṇaḥ tīkṣṇāṃ kuṭhārīm ādāya vanaṃ praviśet . saḥ tatra paśyet mahāntaṃ kadalīskandhaṃ ṛjuṃ navaṃ akukkuṭajātam . tam enaṃ mūle chindyāt, mūle chittvā agre chindyāt, agre chittvā pattravaṭiṃ vinibhuñjyāt . saḥ tatra pattravaṭiṃ vinibhuñjānaḥ phalgum api na adhigacchet, kutaḥ sāram ?

evam eva khalu tvam, agniveśyāyana, mayā svasmin vāde samanuyujyamānaḥ samanugāhyamānaḥ samanubhāṣyamānaḥ riktaḥ tucchaḥ aparāddhaḥ . bhāṣitā khalu punaḥ te eṣā, agniveśyāyana, vaiśālyāṃ pariṣadi vācā — na ahaṃ taṃ paśyāmi śramaṇaṃ vā brāhmaṇaṃ vā, saṃghinaṃ gaṇinaṃ gaṇācāryam, api arhantaṃ samyaksambuddhaṃ pratijānānam, yaḥ mayā vādena vādaṃ samārabdhaḥ na saṃkampeta na sampakampeta na sampavyatheta, yasya na kakṣebhyaḥ svedāḥ mucyeyuḥ . sthūṇāṃ cet api aham acetanāṃ vādena vādaṃ samārabheyam sā api mayā vādena vādaṃ samārabdhā saṃkampeta sampakampeta sampavyatheta . kaḥ punaḥ vādaḥ manuṣyabhūtasya iti ? tava khalu punar, agniveśyāyana, apy ekāni svedapruṣitāni lalāṭāt muktāni, uttarāsaṅgaṃ vinibhidya bhūmau pratiṣṭhitāni . mama khalu punar, agniveśyāyana, na asti etarhi kāye svedaḥ iti . iti bhagavān tasmin pariṣadi suvarṇavarṇaṃ kāyaṃ vivavāra . evam ukte, satyakaḥ nirgranthaputraḥ tūṣṇībhūtaḥ maṅkubhūtaḥ patitaskandhaḥ adhomukhaḥ pradhyāyan apratibhānaḥ nyaṣīdat .

atha khalu durmukhaḥ licchaviputraḥ satyakaṃ nirgranthaputraṃ tūṣṇībhūtaṃ maṅkubhūtaṃ patitaskandhaṃ adhomukhaṃ pradhyāyantam apratibhānaṃ viditvā bhagavantam etad avocat — upamā mām, bhagavan, pratibhāti iti .

pratibhātu tvām, durmukha iti bhagavān avocat .

tadyathā api, bhadanta, grāmasya vā nigamasya vā avidūre puṣkariṇī . tatra syāt karkaṭakaḥ . atha khalu, bhadanta, sambahulāḥ kumārakāḥ vā kumārikāḥ vā tasmāt grāmāt vā nigamāt vā niṣkramya tāṃ puṣkariṇīm upasaṃkameyuḥ ; upasaṃkramya tāṃ puṣkariṇīm avagāhya taṃ karkaṭakaṃ udakāt uddhṛtya sthale pratiṣṭhāpayeyuḥ . yam yam eva hi saḥ, bhadanta, karkaṭakaḥ aṭam abhininnāmayet taṃ tam eva te kumārakāḥ vā kumārikāḥ vā kāṣṭhena vā kathalena vā saṃchindyuḥ sambhañjyuḥ sampalibhañjyuḥ . evam hi saḥ, bhadanta, karkaṭakaḥ sarvaiḥ aṭaiḥ saṃchinnaiḥ sambhagnaiḥ sampalibhagnaiḥ abhavyaḥ tāṃ puṣkariṇīṃ punaḥ avataritum, tadyathā api pūrvam . evam eva khalu, bhadanta, yāni satyakasya nirgranthaputrasya visūkāyitāni viṣevitāni vispanditāni tāni api sarvāṇi bhagavatā saṃchinnāni sambhagnāni sampalibhagnāni ; abhavyaḥ ca idānīm, bhadanta, satyakaḥ nirgranthaputraḥ punar bhagavantam upasaṃkramituṃ yad idaṃ vādābhiprāyaḥ iti .

evam ukte, satyakaḥ nirgranthaputraḥ durmukhaṃ licchaviputram etad avocat — āgamaya tvam, durmukha, āgamaya tvam, durmukha, na vayaṃ tvayā sārdhaṃ mantrayāmaḥ, iha vayaṃ bhavatā gautamena sārdhaṃ mantrayāmaḥ .

tiṣṭhatu eṣā, bhoḥ gautama, asmākam ca eva anyeṣāṃ ca pṛthuśramaṇabrāhmaṇānāṃ vācā . vilāpaṃ vilapitaṃ manye . kiyatā ca nu khalu bhavataḥ gautamasya śrāvakaḥ śāsanakaraḥ bhavati avavādapratikaraḥ tīrṇavicikitsaḥ vigatakathaṃkathaḥ vaiśāradyaprāptaḥ aparapratyayaḥ śāstṛśāsane viharati iti ?

iha, agniveśyāyana, mama śrāvakaḥ yat kiṃcit rūpam atītānāgatapratyutpannam adhyātmaṃ vā bahirdhā vā audārikaṃ vā sūkṣmaṃ vā hīnaṃ vā praṇītaṃ vā yat dūre antike vā, sarvaṃ rūpam na etad mama, na eṣaḥ aham asmi, na me eṣaḥ ātmā iti evam etad yathābhūtaṃ samyakprajñayā paśyati ; yā kācit vedanā … yā kācit saṃjñā … ye kecit saṃskārāḥ … yat kiṃcit vijñānam atītānāgatapratyutpannam adhyātmaṃ vā bahirdhā vā audārikaṃ vā sūkṣmaṃ vā hīnaṃ vā praṇītaṃ vā, yat dūre antike vā, sarvaṃ vijñānam na etad mama, na eṣaḥ aham asmi, na me eṣaḥ ātmā iti evam etad yathābhūtaṃ samyakprajñayā paśyati . etāvatā khalu, agniveśyāyana, mama śrāvakaḥ śāsanakaraḥ bhavati avavādapratikaraḥ tīrṇavicikitsaḥ vigatakathaṃkathaḥ vaiśāradyaprāptaḥ aparapratyayaḥ śāstṛśāsane viharati iti .

kiyatā punaḥ, bhoḥ gautama, bhikṣuḥ arhan bhavati kṣīṇāsravaḥ uṣitavān kṛtakaraṇīyaḥ avahitabhāraḥ anuprāptasadarthaḥ parikṣīṇabhavasaṃyojanaḥ samyagājñāvimuktaḥ iti ?

evaṃ vimuktacittaḥ khalu, agniveśyāyana, bhikṣuḥ tribhiḥ anuttaryaiḥ samānvāgataḥ bhavati — darśanānuttaryeṇa, pratipadānuttaryeṇa, vimuktānuttaryeṇa . evaṃ vimuktacittaḥ khalu, agniveśyāyana, bhikṣuḥ tathāgatam eva satkaroti gurukaroti mānayati pūjayati — buddhaḥ saḥ bhagavān bodhāya dharmaṃ deśayati, dāntaḥ saḥ bhagavān damathāya dharmaṃ deśayati, śāntaḥ saḥ bhagavān śamathāya dharmaṃ deśayati, tīrṇaḥ saḥ bhagavān taraṇāya dharmaṃ deśayati, parinirvṛtaḥ saḥ bhagavān parinirvāṇāya dharmaṃ deśayati iti .

evam ukte, satyakaḥ nirgranthaputraḥ bhagavantam etad avocat — vayam eva, bhoḥ gautama, dhvaṃsinaḥ, vayaṃ pragalbhāḥ, ye vayaṃ bhavantaṃ gautamaṃ vādena vādam āsādayitavyam amaṃsmahi . syāt hi, bhoḥ gautama, hastinaṃ prabhinnam āsādya puruṣasya svastibhāvaḥ, na tu eva bhavantaṃ gautamam āsādya syāt puruṣasya svastibhāvaḥ . syāt hi, bhoḥ gautama, prajvalitaṃ agniskandham āsādya puruṣasya svastibhāvaḥ, na tu eva bhavantaṃ gautamam āsādya syāt puruṣasya svastibhāvaḥ . syāt hi, bhoḥ gautama, āśīviṣaṃ ghoraviṣam āsādya puruṣasya svastibhāvaḥ, na tu eva bhavantaṃ gautamam āsādya syāt puruṣasya svastibhāvaḥ . vayam eva, bhoḥ gautama, dhvaṃsinaḥ, vayaṃ pragalbhāḥ, ye vayaṃ bhavantaṃ gautamaṃ vādena vādam āsādayitavyam amaṃsmahi . adhivāsayatu me bhavān gautamaḥ śvātanāya bhaktaṃ sārdhaṃ bhikṣusaṃghena iti . adhivāsasi bhagavān tūṣṇībhāvena .

atha khalu satyakaḥ nirgranthaputraḥ bhagavataḥ adhivāsanaṃ viditvā tān licchavīn āmantrayata — śṛṇvantu me bhavantaḥ licchavayaḥ, śramaṇaḥ me gautamaḥ nimantritaḥ śvātanāya sārdhaṃ bhikṣusaṃghena . tena me abhihareta yad asya pratirūpaṃ manyedhvam iti .

atha khalu te licchavayaḥ tasyāḥ rātryāḥ atyayena satyakasya nirgranthaputrasya pañcamātrāṇi sthālīpākaśatāni bhaktābhihāram abhijahruḥ . atha khalu nirgranthaputraḥ svake ārāme praṇītaṃ khādanīyaṃ bhojanīyaṃ pratipādayitvā bhagavataḥ kālam ārocayām āsa — kālaḥ, bhoḥ gautama, niṣṭhitaṃ bhaktam iti .

atha khalu bhagavān pūrvāhṇasamaye paridhāya pātracīvaram ādāya satyakasya nirgranthaputrasya ārāmam upasaṃcakrāma ; upasaṃkramya prajñapte āsane nyaṣīdat sārdhaṃ bhikṣusaṃghena . atha khalu satyakaḥ nirgranthaputraḥ buddhapramukhaṃ bhikṣusaṃghaṃ praṇītena khādanīyena bhojanīyena svahastam satarpayām āsa sampravārayām āsa . atha khalu satyakaḥ nirgranthaputraḥ bhagavantaṃ bhuktavantaṃ avanītapātrapāṇim anyataram nīcam āsanaṃ gṛhītvā ekānte nyaṣīdat .

ekānte niṣaṇṇaḥ khalu satyakaḥ nirgranthaputraḥ bhagavantam etad avocat — yad idam, bhoḥ gautama, dāne puṇyam ca puṇyamahī ca tat dāyakānāṃ sukhāya bhavatu iti .

yat khalu, agniveśyāyana, tādṛśaṃ dakṣiṇīyam āgamya avītarāgam avītadveṣam avītamoham, tat dāyakānāṃ bhaviṣyati . yat khalu, agniveśyāyana, mādṛśaṃ dakṣiṇīyam āgamya vītarāgaṃ vītadveṣaṃ vītamoham, tat tava bhaviṣyati iti .
