madhyamanikāyaḥ 36 - mahāsatyakasūtram

evaṃ mayā śrutam — ekasmin samaye bhagavān vaiśālyāṃ viharati sma mahāvane kūṭāgāraśālāyām .

tena khalu punaḥ samayena bhagavān pūrvāhṇasamaye sunivastaḥ bhavati pātracīvaram ādāya vaiśālīṃ piṇḍāya praveṣṭukāmaḥ .

atha khalu satyakaḥ nirgranthaputraḥ jaṅghāvihāram anucaṅkramamāṇaḥ anuvicaran mahāvane kūṭāgāraśālām upasaṃcakrāma . adrākṣīt khalu āyuṣmān ānandaḥ satyakaṃ nirgranthaputraṃ dūrataḥ eva āgacchantam . dṛṣṭvā bhagavantam etad avocat — ayaṃ, bhadanta, satyakaḥ nirgranthaputraḥ āgacchati bhāṣyapravādakaḥ paṇḍitavādaḥ sādhusammataḥ bahujanasya . eṣaḥ khalu, bhadanta, avarṇakāmaḥ buddhasya, avarṇakāmaḥ dharmasya, avarṇakāmaḥ saṃghasya . sādhu, bhadanta, bhagavān muhūrtaṃ niṣīdatu anukampām upādāya iti . nyaṣīdat bhagavān prajñapte āsane .

atha khalu satyakaḥ nirgranthaputraḥ bhagavantam upasaṃcakrāma ; upasaṃkramya bhagavatā sārdhaṃ samamodata, saṃmodanīyāṃ kathāṃ smāraṇīyāṃ vyatisārya ekānte nyaṣīdat . ekānte niṣaṇṇaḥ khalu satyakaḥ nirgranthaputraḥ bhagavantam etad avocat —

santi, bhoḥ gautama, eke śramaṇabrāhmaṇāḥ kāyabhāvanānuyogam anuyuktāḥ viharanti, na tu cittabhāvanām . spṛśanti hi te, bhoḥ gautama, śārīrikāṃ duḥkhāṃ vedanām . bhūtapūrvam, bhoḥ gautama, śārīrikyā duḥkhayā vedanayā spṛṣṭasya sataḥ ūrustambhaḥ api nāma bhaviṣyati, hṛdayam api nāma sphuṭiṣyati, uṣṇam api lohitaṃ mukhataḥ udgamiṣyati, unmādam api prāpsyati cittakṣepam . tasya khalu etad, bhoḥ gautama, kāyānvayaṃ cittaṃ bhavati, kāyasya vaśena vartate . tat kasya hetoḥ ? abhāvitatvāt cittasya . santi punaḥ, bhoḥ gautama, eke śramaṇabrāhmaṇāḥ cittabhāvanānuyogam anuyuktāḥ viharanti, na tu kāyabhāvanām . spṛśanti hi te, bhoḥ gautama, caitasikīṃ duḥkhāṃ vedanām . bhūtapūrvam, bhoḥ gautama, caitasikyā duḥkhayā vedanayā spṛṣṭasya sataḥ ūrustambhaḥ api nāma bhaviṣyati, hṛdayam api nāma sphuṭiṣyati, uṣṇam api lohitaṃ mukhataḥ udgamiṣyati, unmādam api prāpsyati cittakṣepam . tasya khalu eṣaḥ, bhoḥ gautama, cittānvayaḥ kāyaḥ bhavati, cittasya vaśena vartate . tat kasya hetoḥ ? abhāvitatvāt kāyasya . tasya mama, bhoḥ gautama, evaṃ bhavati — addhā bhavataḥ gautamasya śrāvakāḥ cittabhāvanānuyogam anuyuktāḥ viharanti, na tu kāyabhāvanām iti .

kiṃ iti punaḥ te, agniveśyāyana, kāyabhāvanā śrutā iti ?

tadyathā idam — nandaḥ vatsaḥ, kṛśaḥ sāṃkṛtyaḥ, maskariḥ gośālaḥ — ete, bhoḥ gautama, acelakāḥ muktācārāḥ hastāvalekhanāḥ na ehibhadantikāḥ na tiṣṭhabhadantikāḥ na abhihṛtaṃ na uddiśyakṛtaṃ na nimantraṇaṃ svādayanti, te na kumbhīmukhāt pratigṛhṇanti na kaḍopīmukhāt pratigṛhṇanti na eḍakamantaraṃ na daṇḍamantaraṃ na musalamantaraṃ na dvayoḥ bhuñjānayoḥ na garbhiṇyāḥ na pāyamānāyāḥ na puruṣāntaragatāyāḥ na saṃkṛtīṣu na yatra śvā upasthitaḥ bhavati na yatra makṣikāḥ ṣaṇḍaṣaṇḍacāriṇyaḥ, na matsyaṃ na māṃsaṃ na surāṃ na maireyaṃ na tuṣodakaṃ pibanti . te ekāgārikāḥ vā bhavanti ekālopikāḥ, dvyāgārikāḥ vā bhavanti dvālopikāḥ … saptāgārikāḥ vā bhavanti saptālopikāḥ . ekayā api dattyā yāpayanti, dvābhyām api dattibhyāṃ yāpayanti … saptabhiḥ api dattibhiḥ yāpayanti . ekāhikam api āhāram āhārayanti, dvyāhikam api āhāram āhārayanti … saptāhikam api āhāram āhārayanti . iti evaṃrūpam ardhamāsikam api paryāyabhaktabhojanānuyogam anuyuktāḥ viharanti iti .

kiṃ punaḥ te, agniveśyāyana, tāvatakena eva yāpayanti iti ?

na idam hi, bhoḥ gautama . apy ekadā, bhoḥ gautama, udārāṇi udārāṇi khādanīyāni khādanti, udārāṇi udārāṇi bhojanāni bhuñjanti, udārāṇi udārāṇi svādanīyāni svādayanti, udārāṇi udārāṇi pānāni pibanti . te imaṃ kāyaṃ balaṃ grāhayanti nāma, bṛṃhayanti nāma, medayanti nāma iti .

yat khalu te, agniveśyāyana, pūrvaṃ prahāya paścāt upacinvanti, evam asya kāyasya ācayāpacayaḥ bhavati . kiṃ iti punaḥ te, agniveśyāyana, cittabhāvanā śrutā iti ? cittabhāvanāyāṃ khalu satyakaḥ nirgranthaputraḥ bhagavatā pṛṣṭhaḥ samānaḥ na samapādayat .

atha khalu bhagavān satyakaṃ nirgranthaputram etad avocat — yā api khalu te eṣā, agniveśyāyana, pūrvā kāyabhāvanā bhāṣitā sā api āryasya vinaye na dhārmikī kāyabhāvanā . kāyabhāvanām api khalu tvam, agniveśyāyana, na ājñāsīḥ, kutaḥ punaḥ tvaṃ cittabhāvanāṃ jñāsyasi ? api ca, agniveśyāyana, yathā abhāvitakāyaḥ ca bhavati abhāvitacittaḥ ca, bhāvitakāyaḥ ca bhavati bhāvitacittaḥ ca . tat śṛṇu, sādhu manasi kuru, bhāṣiṣye iti .

evam, bhoḥ iti khalu satyakaḥ nirgranthaputraḥ bhagavataḥ pratyaśrauṣīt . bhagavān etad avocat —

kathaṃ ca, agniveśyāyana, abhāvitakāyaḥ ca bhavati abhāvitacittaḥ ca ? iha, agniveśyāyana, aśrutavataḥ pṛthagjanasya utpadyate sukhā vedanā . saḥ sukhayā vedanayā spṛṣṭaḥ samānaḥ sukhasārāgī ca bhavati sukhasārāgitāṃ ca āpadyate . tasya sā sukhā vedanā nirudhyate . sukhāyāḥ vedanāyāḥ nirodhāt utpadyate duḥkhā vedanā . saḥ duḥkhayā vedanayā spṛṣṭaḥ samānaḥ śocati klamati paridevati urastāḍiṃ krandati sammoham āpadyate . tasya khalu eṣā, agniveśyāyana, utpannā api sukhā vedanā cittaṃ paryādāya tiṣṭhati abhāvitatvāt kāyasya, utpannā api duḥkhā vedanā cittaṃ paryādāya tiṣṭhati abhāvitatvāt cittasya . yasya kasyacit, agniveśyāyana, evam ubhayatopakṣam utpannā api sukhā vedanā cittaṃ paryādāya tiṣṭhati abhāvitatvāt kāyasya, utpannā api duḥkhā vedanā cittaṃ paryādāya tiṣṭhati abhāvitatvāt cittasya, evaṃ khalu, agniveśyāyana, abhāvitakāyaḥ ca bhavati abhāvitacittaḥ ca .

kathaṃ ca, agniveśyāyana, bhāvitakāyaḥ ca bhavati bhāvitacittaḥ ca ? iha, agniveśyāyana, śrutavataḥ āryaśrāvakasya utpadyate sukhā vedanā . saḥ sukhayā vedanayā spṛṣṭaḥ samānaḥ na sukhasārāgī ca bhavati, na sukhasārāgitāṃ ca āpadyate . tasya sā sukhā vedanā nirudhyate . sukhāyāḥ vedanāyāḥ nirodhāt utpadyate duḥkhā vedanā . saḥ duḥkhayā vedanayā spṛṣṭaḥ samānaḥ na śocati na klamati na paridevati na urastāḍiṃ krandati na sammoham āpadyate . tasya khalu eṣā, agniveśyāyana, utpannā api sukhā vedanā cittaṃ na paryādāya tiṣṭhati bhāvitatvāt kāyasya, utpannā api duḥkhā vedanā cittaṃ na paryādāya tiṣṭhati bhāvitatvāt cittasya . yasya kasyacit, agniveśyāyana, evam ubhayatopakṣam utpannā api sukhā vedanā cittaṃ na paryādāya tiṣṭhati bhāvitatvāt kāyasya, utpannā api duḥkhā vedanā cittaṃ na paryādāya tiṣṭhati bhāvitatvāt cittasya . evaṃ khalu, agniveśyāyana, bhāvitakāyaḥ ca bhavati bhāvitacittaḥ ca iti .

evaṃ prasannaḥ ahaṃ bhavataḥ gautamasya . bhavān hi gautamaḥ bhāvitakāyaḥ ca bhavati bhāvitacittaḥ ca iti .

addhā khalu te iyam, agniveśyāyana, āsādya upanīya vācā bhāṣitā, api ca te ahaṃ vyākariṣyāmi . yataḥ khalu aham, agniveśyāyana, keśaśmaśru avahārya kāṣāyāṇi vastrāṇi ācchādya agārāt anagārikāṃ pravrajitaḥ, taṃ vata me utpannā vā sukhā vedanā cittaṃ paryādāya sthāsyati, utpannā vā duḥkhā vedanā cittaṃ paryādāya sthāsyati iti na etad sthānaṃ vidyate iti .

na hi nūnaṃ bhavataḥ gautamasya utpadyate tathārūpā sukhā vedanā yathārūpā utpannā sukhā vedanā cittaṃ paryādāya tiṣṭhet ; na hi nūnaṃ bhavataḥ gautamasya utpadyate tathārūpā duḥkhā vedanā yathārūpā utpannā duḥkhā vedanā cittaṃ paryādāya tiṣṭhet iti .

kiṃ hi na syāt, agniveśyāyana ? iha me, agniveśyāyana, pūrvam eva sambodheḥ anabhisambuddhasya bodhiśaktasya eva sataḥ etad abhūt — sambādhaḥ gṛhāvāsaḥ rajaḥpathaḥ, abhyavakāśaḥ pravrajyā . na idam sukaraṃ agāram adhyāvasatā ekāntaparipūrṇam ekāntapariśuddhaṃ śaṅkhalikhitaṃ brahmacaryaṃ caritum . yat nūnam ahaṃ keśaśmaśru avahārya kāṣāyāṇi vastrāṇi ācchādya agārāt anagārikāṃ pravrajeyam iti .

saḥ khalu aham, agniveśyāyana, apareṇa samayena daharaḥ eva samānaḥ, susuḥ kālakeśaḥ bhadreṇa yauvanena samānvāgataḥ prathamena vayasā, akāmakānāṃ mātāpitṝṇām aśrumukhānāṃ rudatām, keśaśmaśru avahārya kāṣāyāṇi vastrāṇi ācchādya agārāt anagārikāṃ prāvrajam .

saḥ evaṃ pravrajitaḥ samānaḥ kiṃkuśalagaveṣī anuttaraṃ śāntivarapadaṃ paryeṣamāṇaḥ ārāḍam kālāpam upasaṃcakrāma ; upasaṃkramya ārāḍaṃ kālāpam etad avocam — icchāmy aham, āyuṣman kālāpa, asmin dharmavinaye brahmacaryaṃ caritum iti .

evam ukte, agniveśyāyana, ālāḍaḥ kālāmaḥ mām etad avocat — viharatu āyuṣmān, tādṛśaḥ ayaṃ dharmaḥ yatra vijñuḥ puruṣaḥ nacirād eva svakam ācāryakaṃ svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtya upasaṃpadya viharet iti .

saḥ khalu aham, agniveśyāyana, nacirād eva kṣipram eva taṃ dharmaṃ paryāpnavam . saḥ khalu aham, agniveśyāyana, tāvatakena eva oṣṭhopahatamātreṇa lapitalāpanamātreṇa jñānavādaṃ ca vadāmi sthaviravādaṃ ca, jānāmi paśyāmi iti ca pratijānāmi, aham ca eva anye ca .

tasya mama, agniveśyāyana, etad abhūt — na khalu ālāḍaḥ kālāmaḥ imaṃ dharmaṃ kevalaṃ śraddhāmātrakana svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtya upasaṃpadya viharāmi iti pravedayati, addhā ālāḍaḥ kālāmaḥ imaṃ dharmaṃ jānan paśyan viharati iti .

atha khalu aham, agniveśyāyana, ārāḍaṃ kālāpam upasaṃcakrāma ; upasaṃkramya ālāḍaṃ kālāmam etad avocam — kiyatā naḥ, āyuṣman kālāma, imaṃ dharmaṃ svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtya upasaṃpadya viharāmi iti pravedayasi iti ? evam ukte, agniveśyāyana, ālāḍaḥ kālāmaḥ ākiṃcanyāyatanaṃ pravedayām āsa .

tasya mama, agniveśyāyana, etad abhūt — na khalu ālāḍasya eva kālāmasya asti śraddhā, mama api asti śraddhā ; na khalu ālāḍasya eva kālāmasya asti vīryam, mama api asti vīryam ; na khalu ālāḍasya eva kālāmasya asti smṛtiḥ, mama api asti smṛtiḥ ; na khalu ālāḍasya eva kālāmasya asti samādhiḥ, mama api asti samādhiḥ ; na khalu ālāḍasya eva kālāmasya asti prajñā, mama api asti prajñā ; yat nūnam ahaṃ yaṃ dharmaṃ ālāḍaḥ kālāmaḥ svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtya upasaṃpadya viharāmi iti pravedayati tasya dharmasya sākṣātkriyāyai pradaheyam iti . saḥ khalu aham, agniveśyāyana, nacirād eva kṣipram eva taṃ dharmaṃ svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtya upasaṃpadya vyahārṣam .

atha khalu aham, agniveśyāyana, ārāḍaṃ kālāpam upasaṃcakrāma ; upasaṃkramya ālāḍaṃ kālāmam etad avocam — etāvatā naḥ, āyuṣman kālāma, imaṃ dharmaṃ svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtya upasaṃpadya pravedayasi iti ?

etāvatā khalu aham, āyuṣman, imaṃ dharmaṃ svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtya upasaṃpadya pravedayāmi iti .

aham api khalu, āyuṣman, etāvatā imaṃ dharmaṃ svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtya upasaṃpadya viharāmi iti .

lābhāḥ naḥ, āyuṣman, sulabdhaṃ naḥ, āyuṣman, ye vayam āyuṣmantaṃ tādṛśaṃ sabrahmacāriṇaṃ paśyāmaḥ . iti yaṃ dharmaṃ svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtya upasaṃpadya pravedayāmi taṃ tvaṃ dharmaṃ svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtya upasaṃpadya viharasi ; yaṃ tvaṃ dharmaṃ svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtya upasaṃpadya viharasi tam ahaṃ dharmaṃ svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtya upasaṃpadya pravedayāmi . iti yam ahaṃ dharmaṃ jānāmi taṃ tvaṃ dharmaṃ jānāsi ; yaṃ tvaṃ dharmaṃ jānāsi tam ahaṃ dharmaṃ jānāmi . iti yādṛśaḥ ahaṃ tādṛśaḥ tvam, yādṛśaḥ tvaṃ tādṛśaḥ aham . ehi idānīm, āyuṣman, ubhau eva santau imaṃ gaṇaṃ pariharāvaḥ iti . iti khalu, agniveśyāyana, ālāḍaḥ kālāmaḥ ācāryaḥ me samānaḥ ātmanaḥ antevāsiṇaṃ māṃ samānam ātmanā samasamaṃ sthāpayām āsa, udārayā ca māṃ pūjayā pūjayām āsa .

tasya mama, agniveśyāyana, etad abhūt — na ayaṃ dharmaḥ nirvedāya na virāgāya na nirodhāya na upaśamāya na abhijñāyai na sambodhāya na nirvāṇāya saṃvartate, yāvat eva ākiṃcanyāyatanopapattaye iti . saḥ khalu aham, agniveśyāyana, taṃ dharmam analaṃkṛtya tasmāt dharmāt nirvidya apacakrāma .

saḥ khalu aham, agniveśyāyana, kiṃkuśalagaveṣī anuttaraṃ śāntivarapadaṃ paryeṣamāṇaḥ udrakaṃ rāmaputram upasaṃcakrāma ; upasaṃkramya udrakaṃ rāmaputram etad avocam — icchāmy aham, āyuṣman, asmin dharmavinaye brahmacaryaṃ caritum iti .

evam ukte, agniveśyāyana, udrakaḥ rāmaputraḥ mām etad avocat — viharatu āyuṣmān, tādṛśaḥ ayaṃ dharmaḥ yatra vijñuḥ puruṣaḥ nacirād eva svakam ācāryakaṃ svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtya upasaṃpadya viharet iti .

tasya mama, agniveśyāyana, etad abhūt — na khalu rāmaḥ imaṃ dharmaṃ kevalaṃ śraddhāmātrakana svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtya upasaṃpadya viharāmi iti pravedayām āsa . addhā rāmaḥ imaṃ dharmaṃ jānan paśyan vyahārṣīt iti .

atha khalu aham, agniveśyāyana, udrakaṃ rāmaputram upasaṃcakrāma ; upasaṃkramya udrakaṃ rāmaputram etad avocam — kiyatā naḥ āyuṣman rāmaḥ imaṃ dharmaṃ svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtya upasaṃpadya viharāmi iti pravedayām āsa iti ? evam ukte, agniveśyāyana, udrakaḥ rāmaputraḥ naivasaṃjñānāsaṃjñāyatanaṃ pravedayām āsa .

tasya mama, agniveśyāyana, etad abhūt — na khalu rāmasya eva abhūt śraddhā, mama api asti śraddhā ; na khalu rāmasya eva abhūt vīryam, mama api asti vīryam ; na khalu rāmasya eva abhūt smṛtiḥ, mama api asti smṛtiḥ ; na khalu rāmasya eva abhūt samādhiḥ, mama api asti samādhiḥ ; na khalu rāmasya eva abhūt prajñā, mama api asti prajñā ; yat nūnam ahaṃ yaṃ dharmaṃ rāmaḥ svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtya upasaṃpadya viharāmi iti pravedayām āsa tasya dharmasya sākṣātkriyāyai pradaheyam iti . saḥ khalu aham, agniveśyāyana, nacirād eva kṣipram eva taṃ dharmaṃ svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtya upasaṃpadya vyahārṣam .

atha khalu aham, agniveśyāyana, udrakam rāmaputram upasaṃcakrāma ; upasaṃkramya udrakaṃ rāmaputram etad avocam — etāvatā naḥ āyuṣman rāmaḥ imaṃ dharmaṃ svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtya upasaṃpadya pravedayām āsa iti ?

etāvatā khalu āyuṣman rāmaḥ imaṃ dharmaṃ svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtya upasaṃpadya pravedayām āsa iti .

aham api khalu, āyuṣman, etāvatā imaṃ dharmaṃ svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtya upasaṃpadya viharāmi iti .

lābhāḥ naḥ, āyuṣman, sulabdhaṃ naḥ, āyuṣman, ye vayam āyuṣmantaṃ tādṛśaṃ sabrahmacāriṇaṃ paśyāmaḥ . iti yaṃ dharmaṃ rāmaḥ svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtya upasaṃpadya pravedayām āsa, taṃ tvaṃ dharmaṃ svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtya upasaṃpadya viharasi ; yaṃ tvaṃ dharmaṃ svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtya upasaṃpadya viharasi, taṃ dharmaṃ rāmaḥ svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtya upasaṃpadya pravedayām āsa . iti yaṃ dharmaṃ rāmaḥ abhyajñāsīt taṃ tvaṃ dharmaṃ jānāsi ; yaṃ tvaṃ dharmaṃ jānāsi taṃ dharmaṃ rāmaḥ abhyajñāsīt . iti yādṛśaḥ rāmaḥ abhūt tādṛśaḥ tvam ; yādṛśaḥ tvaṃ tādṛśaḥ rāmaḥ abhūt . ehi idānīm, āyuṣman, tvam imaṃ gaṇaṃ parihara iti . iti khalu, agniveśyāyana, udrakaḥ rāmaputraḥ sabrahmacārī me samānaḥ ācāryasthāne ca māṃ sthāpayām āsa, udārayā ca māṃ pūjayā pūjayām āsa .

tasya mama, agniveśyāyana, etad abhūt — na ayaṃ dharmaḥ nirvedāya na virāgāya na nirodhāya na upaśamāya na abhijñāyai na sambodhāya na nirvāṇāya saṃvartate, yāvat eva naivasaṃjñānāsaṃjñāyatanopapattaye iti . saḥ khalu aham, agniveśyāyana, taṃ dharmam analaṃkṛtya tasmāt dharmāt nirvidya apacakrāma .

saḥ khalu aham, agniveśyāyana, kiṃkuśalagaveṣī anuttaraṃ śāntivarapadaṃ paryeṣamāṇaḥ magadheṣu anupūrveṇa cārikāṃ caramāṇaḥ uruvilvāyāṃ senānigamaṃ abhyavāsaram . tatra adrākṣaṃ ramaṇīyaṃ bhūmibhāgam, prāsādikaṃ ca vanakhaṇḍam, nadīṃ ca syandamānāṃ śvetakāṃ supratīrthāṃ ramaṇīyām, samantāt ca gocaragrāmam . tasya mama, agniveśyāyana, etad abhūt — ramaṇīyaḥ vata bhoḥ bhūmibhāgaḥ, prāsādikaḥ ca vanakhaṇḍaḥ, nadī ca syandate śvetakā supratīrthā ramaṇīyā, samantāt ca gocaragrāmaḥ . alam vata idam kulaputrasya pradhānārthikasya pradhānāya iti . saḥ khalu aham, agniveśyāyana, tatra eva nyaṣīdam alam idaṃ pradhānāya iti .

saḥ khalu aham, agniveśyāyana, audārikam āhāram āhāryaya, balaṃ gṛhītvā, vivicya eva kāmebhyaḥ vivicya akuśalebhyaḥ dharmebhyaḥ savitarkaṃ savicāraṃ vivekajaṃ prītisukhaṃ prathamaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya vyahārṣam . evaṃrūpā api khalu me, agniveśyāyana, utpannā sukhā vedanā cittaṃ na paryādāya tiṣṭhati .

vitarkavicārāṇāṃ vyupaśamāt adhyātmaṃ saṃprasādanaṃ cetasaḥ ekāgrībhāvam avitarkam avicāraṃ samādhijaṃ prītisukhaṃ dvitīyaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya vyahārṣam . evaṃrūpā api khalu me, agniveśyāyana, utpannā sukhā vedanā cittaṃ na paryādāya tiṣṭhati . prītyāḥ ca virāgāt upekṣakaḥ ca vyahārṣam, smṛtimān ca samprajānan . sukhaṃ ca kāyena pratisamavedayam yat tad āryāḥ ācakṣate — upekṣakaḥ smṛtimān sukhavihārī iti tṛtīyaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya vyahārṣam . evaṃrūpā api khalu me, agniveśyāyana, utpannā sukhā vedanā cittaṃ na paryādāya tiṣṭhati . sukhasya ca prahāṇāt duḥkhasya ca prahāṇāt pūrvam eva saumanasyadaurmanasyānām astaṃgamāt aduḥkhamasukham upekṣāsmṛtipāriśuddhiṃ caturthaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya vyahārṣam . evaṃrūpā api khalu me, agniveśyāyana, utpannā sukhā vedanā cittaṃ na paryādāya tiṣṭhati .

saḥ evaṃ samāhite citte pariśuddhe paryavadāte anaṅgaṇe vigatopakleśe mṛdubhūte karmaṇye sthite āniñjyaprāpte pūrvanivāsānusmṛtijñānāya cittam abhinyanāmayam . saḥ anekavihitaṃ pūrvanivāsam anusmarāmi, tadyathā — ekām api jātim … iti sākāraṃ soddeśam anekavihitaṃ pūrvanivāsam anusmarāmi .

tasya me evaṃ jānataḥ evaṃ paśyataḥ kāmāsravāt api cittaṃ vyamucyata, bhavāsravāt api cittaṃ vyamucyata, avidyāsravāt api cittaṃ vyamucyata . vimukte vimuktam iti jñānam abhūt .

kṣīṇā jātiḥ, uṣitaṃ brahmacaryam, kṛtaṃ karaṇīyam, na aparam itthatvāya iti abhyajñāsiṣam .

abhijānāmi khalu punar aham, agniveśyāyana, anekaśatāyai pariṣade dharmaṃ deśayitā . api sma mām ekaikaḥ evaṃ manyate — mām eva ārabhya śramaṇaḥ gautamaḥ dharmaṃ deśayati iti . na khalu punar etad, agniveśyāyana, evaṃ draṣṭavyam ; yāvat eva vijñāpanārthāya tathāgataḥ parebhyaḥ dharmaṃ deśayati . saḥ khalu aham, agniveśyāyana, tasyāḥ eva kathāyāḥ paryavasāne, tasmin eva pūrvasmin samādhinimitte adhyātmam eva cittaṃ saṃsthāpayāmi saṃniṣādayāmi ekāgrī karomi samādadhāmi, yena svid nityakalpaṃ viharāmi iti .

avakalpanīyam etad bhavataḥ gautamasya yathā tad arhataḥ samyaksambuddhasya . abhijānāti khalu punaḥ bhavān gautamaḥ divā suptaḥ iti ?

abhijānāmy aham, agniveśyāyana, grīṣmāṇāṃ paścime māse paścādbhaktam piṇḍapātāpratikrāntaḥ caturguṇāṃ saṃghāṭīṃ prajñāpya dakṣiṇena pārśvena smṛtimān samprajānan nidrām avakrāntaḥ iti .

etad khalu, bhoḥ gautama, eke śramaṇabrāhmaṇāḥ sammohavihārasmin vadanti iti ?

na khalu, agniveśyāyana, etāvatā saṃmūḍhaḥ vā bhavati asaṃmūḍhaḥ vā . api ca, agniveśyāyana, yathā saṃmūḍhaḥ ca bhavati asaṃmūḍhaḥ ca, tat śṛṇu, sādhu manasi kuru, bhāṣiṣye iti .

evam, bhoḥ iti khalu satyakaḥ nirgranthaputraḥ bhagavataḥ pratyaśrauṣīt .

bhagavān etad avocat —

atha khalu satyakaḥ nirgranthaputraḥ bhagavataḥ bhāṣitam abhinandya anumudya utthāya āsanāt pracakrāma iti .
