madhyamanikāyaḥ 49 - brahmanimantranasūtram

evaṃ mayā śrutam — ekasmin samaye bhagavān śrāvastyāṃ viharati sma jetavane anāthapiṇḍadasya ārāme . tatra khalu bhagavān bhikṣūn āmantrayata — bhikṣavaḥ iti .

bhadanta iti te bhikṣavaḥ bhagavataḥ pratyaśrauṣuḥ . bhagavān etad avocat —

ekam idām aham, bhikṣavaḥ, samayam utkaṭāyāṃ viharāmi subhagavane śālarājamūle . tena khalu punaḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, samayena vyayasya brahmaṇaḥ evaṃrūpaṃ pāpakaṃ dṛṣṭigataṃ utpannaṃ bhavati — idaṃ nityam, idaṃ dhruvam, idaṃ śāśvatam, idaṃ kevalam, idam acyavanadharmam, idaṃ hi na jāyate na jīryate na mriyate na cyavate na upapadyate, itaḥ ca punar anyad uttari niḥsaraṇaṃ na asti iti .

atha khalu aham, bhikṣavaḥ, vyayasya brahmaṇaḥ cetasā cetaḥparivitarkam ājñāya — tadyathā api nāma balavān puruṣaḥ sammiñjitāṃ vā bāhuṃ prasārayet, prasāritāṃ vā bāhuṃ sammiñjayet ; evam eva — ukkaṭhāyāṃ subhagavane śālarājamūle antarhitaḥ tasmin brahmaloke prādurabhūvam .

adrākṣīt khalu mām, bhikṣavaḥ, vyayaḥ brahmā dūrataḥ eva āgacchantam ; dṛṣṭvā mām etad avocat — ehi khalu, mārṣa, svāgatam, mārṣa . cirasya khalu, mārṣa, imaṃ paryāyam akārṣīḥ yad idaṃ iha āgamanāya . idaṃ hi, mārṣa, nityam, idaṃ dhruvam, idaṃ śāśvatam, idaṃ kevalam, idam acyavanadharmam, idaṃ hi na jāyate na jīryate na mriyate na cyavate na upapadyate . itaḥ ca punar anyad uttari niḥsaraṇaṃ na asti iti .

evam ukte, aham, bhikṣavaḥ, vyayaṃ brahmāṇam etad avocam — avidyāgataḥ vata bhoḥ vyayaḥ brahmā, avidyāgataḥ vata bhoḥ vyayaḥ brahmā ; yatra hi nāma anityam eva samānaṃ nityam iti vakṣyati, adhruvam eva samānaṃ dhruvam iti vakṣyati, aśāśvatam eva samānaṃ śāśvatam iti vakṣyati, akevalam eva samānaṃ kevalam iti vakṣyati, cyavanadharmam eva samānaṃ acyavanadharmam iti vakṣyati ; yatra ca punar jāyate jīryate mriyate cyavate upapadyate tat ca vakṣyati — idaṃ hi na jāyate na jīryate na mriyate na cyavate na upapadyate iti ; sat ca punar anyad uttari niḥsaraṇaṃ na asti anyad uttari niḥsaraṇam iti vakṣyati iti .

atha khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, māraḥ pāpmā anyataraṃ brahmapāriṣadyam anvāviśya mām etad avocat — bhikṣo bhikṣo, mā etam āsādaḥ mā etam āsādaḥ, eṣaḥ hi, bhikṣo, brahmā mahābrahmā abhibhūḥ anabhibhūtaḥ anyadarthadarśī vaśavartī īśvaraḥ kartā nirmātā śreṣṭhaḥ sraṣṭā vaśī pitā bhūtabhavyānām .

abhuvan khalu ye, bhikṣo, tvayā pūrvaṃ śramaṇabrāhmaṇāḥ loke pṛthivīgarhikāḥ pṛthivījugupsakāḥ, apgarhikāḥ apjugupsakāḥ, tejogarhikāḥ tejojugupsakāḥ, vāyugarhikāḥ vāyujugupsakāḥ, bhūtagarhikāḥ bhūtajugupsakāḥ, devagarhikāḥ devajugupsakāḥ, prajāpatigarhikāḥ prajāpatijugupsakāḥ, brahmagarhikāḥ brahmajugupsakāḥ — te kāyasya bhedāt prāṇopacchedāt hīne kāye pratiṣṭhitāḥ abhuvan .

ye punaḥ, bhikṣo, tvayā pūrvaṃ śramaṇabrāhmaṇāḥ loke pṛthivīpraśaṃsakāḥ pṛthivyabhinandinaḥ, appraśaṃsakāḥ apabhinandinaḥ, tejopraśaṃsakāḥ tejo'bhinandinaḥ, vāyupraśaṃsakāḥ vāyvabhinandinaḥ, bhūtapraśaṃsakāḥ bhūtābhinandinaḥ, devapraśaṃsakāḥ devābhinandinaḥ, prajāpatipraśaṃsakāḥ prajāpatyabhinandinaḥ, brahmapraśaṃsakāḥ brahmābhinandinaḥ — te kāyasya bhedāt prāṇopacchedāt praṇīte kāye pratiṣṭhitāḥ .

tat tvām aham, bhikṣo, evaṃ vadāmi — iṅgha tvam, mārṣa, yad eva te brahmā āha tad eva tvaṃ kuru, mā tvaṃ brahmaṇaḥ vacanam upātivartiṣṭhāḥ . sacet khalu tvam, bhikṣo, brahmaṇaḥ vacanam upātivartiṣyase, tadyathā api nāma puruṣaḥ śriyam āgacchantīṃ daṇḍena pratipraṇāmayet, tadyathā api vā punaḥ, bhikṣo, puruṣaḥ narakaprapāte prapatan hastābhyāṃ ca pādābhyāṃ ca pṛthivīṃ virādhayet, evaṃ saṃpadam idam, bhikṣo, tava bhaviṣyati . iṅgha tvam, mārṣa, yad eva te brahmā āha tad eva tvaṃ kuru, mā tvaṃ brahmaṇaḥ vacanam upātivartiṣṭhāḥ . na nu tvam, bhikṣo, paśyasi brahmapariṣadaṃ saṃnipatitām iti ?

iti khalu mām, bhikṣavaḥ, māraḥ pāpmā brahmapariṣadam upanayat .

evam ukte, aham, bhikṣavaḥ, māraṃ pāpmānam etad avocam — jānāmi khalu tvām aham, pāpman ; mā tvaṃ maṃsthāḥ — na māṃ jānāti iti . māraḥ tvam asi, pāpman . yaḥ ca eva, pāpman, brahmā, yā ca brahmapariṣat, ye ca brahmapāriṣadyāḥ, sarve eva tava hastagatāḥ sarve eva tava vaśagatāḥ . tava hi, pāpman, evaṃ bhavati — eṣa api me syāt hastagataḥ, eṣa api me syāt vaśagataḥ iti . ahaṃ khalu punaḥ, pāpman, na eva tava hastagataḥ na eva tava vaśagataḥ iti .

evam ukte, bhikṣavaḥ, vyayaḥ brahmā mām etad avocat — ahaṃ hi, mārṣa, nityam eva samānaṃ nityam iti vadāmi, dhruvam eva samānaṃ dhruvam iti vadāmi, śāśvatam eva samānaṃ śāśvatam iti vadāmi, kevalam eva samānaṃ kevalam iti vadāmi, acyavanadharmam eva samānaṃ acyavanadharmam iti vadāmi, yatra ca punar na jāyate na jīryate na mriyate na cyavate na upapadyate tad eva ahaṃ vadāmi — idaṃ hi na jāyate na jīryate na mriyate na cyavate na upapadyate iti . asat ca punar anyad uttari niḥsaraṇaṃ na asti anyad uttari niḥsaraṇam iti vadāmi . abhuvan khalu, bhikṣo, tvayā pūrvaṃ śramaṇabrāhmaṇāḥ loke yāvatakaṃ tava kṛtsnam āyuḥ tāvatakaṃ teṣāṃ tapaḥkarma eva abhūt . te khalu evaṃ jānīyuḥ sat ca punar anyad uttari niḥsaraṇam asti anyad uttari niḥsaraṇam iti, asat vā anyad uttari niḥsaraṇaṃ na asti anyad uttari niḥsaraṇam iti . tat tvām aham, bhikṣo, evaṃ vadāmi — na ca eva anyad uttari niḥsaraṇaṃ drakṣyasi, yāvat eva ca punaḥ klamathasya vighātasya bhāgī bhaviṣyasi . sacet khalu tvam, bhikṣo, pṛthivīm adhyavasiṣyasi, aupasāyikaḥ me bhaviṣyasi vāstusāyikaḥ, yathākāmakaraṇīyaḥ vāhitavyaḥ . sacet āpam … tejaḥ … vāyum … bhūtāni … devān … prajāpatiṃ … brahmāṇam adhyavasiṣyasi, aupasāyikaḥ me bhaviṣyasi vāstusāyikaḥ, yathākāmakaraṇīyaḥ vāhitavyaḥ iti .

aham api khalu evam, brahman, jānāmi — sacet pṛthivīm adhyavasiṣyāmi, aupasāyikaḥ te bhaviṣyāmi vāstusāyikaḥ, yathākāmakaraṇīyaḥ vāhitavyaḥ . sacet āpam … tejaḥ … vāyum … bhūtāni … devān … prajāpatiṃ … brahmāṇam adhyavasiṣyāmi, aupasāyikaḥ te bhaviṣyāmi vāstusāyikaḥ, yathākāmakaraṇīyaḥ vāhitavyaḥ iti api ca te aham, brahman, gatiṃ ca prajānāmi, dyutiṃ ca prajānāmi — evaṃ maharddhikaḥ vyayaḥ brahmā, evaṃ mahānubhāvaḥ vyayaḥ brahmā, evaṃ maheśākhyaḥ vyayaḥ brahmā iti .

yathākathaṃ punar me tvam, mārṣa, gatiṃ ca prajānāsi, dyutiṃ ca prajānāsi — evaṃ maharddhikaḥ vyayaḥ brahmā, evaṃ mahānubhāvaḥ vyayaḥ brahmā, evaṃ maheśākhyaḥ vyayaḥ brahmā iti ?

yāvatā candrasūryau, pariharataḥ diśo bhātaḥ virocanau ; tāvat sahasradhā lokaḥ, atra te vartate vaśaḥ .

paroparaṃ ca jānāsi, atho rāgavirāgiṇam ; itthaṃbhāvaṃ anyathābhāvam, sattvānām āgatiṃ gatim iti .

evaṃ khalu te aham, brahman, gatiṃ ca prajānāmi dyutiṃ ca prajānāmi — evaṃ maharddhikaḥ vyayaḥ brahmā, evaṃ mahānubhāvaḥ vyayaḥ brahmā, evaṃ maheśākhyaḥ vyayaḥ brahmā iti .

asti khalu, brahman, anyaḥ kāyaḥ, taṃ tvaṃ na jānāsi na paśyasi ; tam ahaṃ jānāmi paśyāmi . asti khalu, brahman, ābhāsvarāḥ nāma kāyaḥ yataḥ tvaṃ cyutaḥ iha upapannaḥ . tasya te aticiranivāsena sā smṛtiḥ pramuṣṭā, tena taṃ tvaṃ na jānāsi na paśyasi ; tam ahaṃ jānāmi paśyāmi . evam api khalu aham, brahman, na eva te samasamaḥ abhijñāya, kutaḥ nīcaih syām ? atha khalu aham eva tvayā bhūyān .

asti khalu, brahman, śubhakṛtsnāḥ nāma kāyaḥ, bṛhatphalāḥ nāma kāyaḥ, abhibhūḥ nāma kāyaḥ, taṃ tvaṃ na jānāsi na paśyasi ; tam ahaṃ jānāmi paśyāmi . evam api khalu aham, brahman, na eva te samasamaḥ abhijñāya, kutaḥ nīcaih syām ? atha khalu aham eva tvayā bhūyān .

pṛthivīṃ khalu aham, brahman, pṛthivītvena abhijñāya yāvatā pṛthivyāḥ pṛthivītvena ananubhūtaṃ tad abhijñāya pṛthivīṃ na abhūvam, pṛthivyāḥ na abhūvam, pṛthivītaḥ na abhūvam, pṛthivī me iti na abhūvam, pṛthivīṃ na abhivādiṣam . evam api khalu aham, brahman, na eva te samasamaḥ abhijñāya, kutaḥ nīcaih syām ? atha khalu aham eva tvayā bhūyān .

apaḥ khalu aham, brahman … tejaḥ khalu aham, brahman … vāyuṃ khalu aham, brahman … bhūtāni khalu aham, brahman … devān khalu aham, brahman … prajāpatiṃ khalu aham, brahman … brahmāṇaṃ khalu aham, brahman … ābhāsvarān khalu aham, brahman … śubhakṛtsnān khalu aham, brahman … bṛhatphalān khalu aham, brahman … abhibhuvaṃ khalu aham, brahman … sarvaṃ khalu aham, brahman, sarvatvena abhijñāya yāvatā sarvasya sarvatvena ananubhūtaṃ tad abhijñāya sarvaṃ na abhūvam sarvasmin na abhūvam sarvataḥ na abhūvam sarvaṃ me iti na abhūvam, sarvaṃ na abhivādiṣam . evam api khalu aham, brahman, na eva te samasamaḥ abhijñāya, kutaḥ nīcaih syām ? atha khalu aham eva tvayā bhūyān iti .

sacet khalu, mārṣa, sarvasya sarvatvena ananubhūtam, tad abhijñāya mā ha eva te riktakam eva abhūt, tucchakam eva abhūt iti .

vijñānam anidarśanam anantaṃ sarvataḥ prabham .

tat pṛthivyāḥ pṛthivītvena ananubhūtam, apām aptvena ananubhūtam, tejasaḥ tejastvena ananubhūtam, vāyoḥ vāyutvena ananubhūtam, bhūtānāṃ bhūtatvena ananubhūtam, devānāṃ devatvena ananubhūtam, prajāpateḥ prajāpatitvena ananubhūtam, brahmaṇaḥ brahmatvena ananubhūtam, ābhāsvarāṇām ābhāsvaratvena ananubhūtam, śubhakṛtsnānāṃ śubhakṛtsnatvena ananubhūtam, bṛhatphalānāṃ bṛhatphalatvena ananubhūtam, abhibhuvaḥ abhibhutvena ananubhūtam, sarvasya sarvatvena ananubhūtam .

hanta tarhi te, mārṣa, paśya antardadhe iti .

hanta tarhi me tvam, brahman, antardhatsva, sacet viṣahase iti .

atha khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, vyayaḥ brahmā — antardhāsyāmi śramaṇasya gautamasya, antardhāsyāmi śramaṇasya gautamasya iti na eva sma me śaknoti antardhātum .

evam ukte, aham, bhikṣavaḥ, vyayaṃ brahmāṇam etad avocam — hanta tarhi te brahman antardadhe iti .

hanta tarhi me tvam, mārṣa, antardhatsva sacet viṣahase iti .

atha khalu aham, bhikṣavaḥ, tathārūpam ṛddhyabhisaṃskāram abhisaṃskārṣam — etāvatā brahmā ca brahmapariṣat ca brahmapāriṣadyāḥ ca śabdaṃ ca me śroṣyanti, na ca māṃ drakṣyanti iti . antarhitaḥ imāṃ gāthām abhāṣiṣam —

bhave ca aham bhayaṃ dṛṣṭvā, bhavaṃ ca vibhavaiṣiṇām ; bhavaṃ na abhivādiṣam kiṃcit, nandiṃ ca na upādadim iti .

atha khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, brahmā ca brahmapariṣat ca brahmapāriṣadyāḥ ca āścaryādbhutacittajātāḥ abhuvan — āścaryaṃ vata bhoḥ, adbhutaṃ vata bhoḥ . śramaṇasya gautamasya maharddhikatā mahānubhāvatā, na ca vata naḥ itaḥ pūrvaṃ dṛṣṭaḥ vā, śrutaḥ vā, anyaḥ śramaṇaḥ vā brāhmaṇaḥ vā evaṃ maharddhikaḥ evaṃ mahānubhāvaḥ yathā ayaṃ śramaṇaḥ gautamaḥ śākyaputraḥ śākyakulāt pravrajitaḥ . bhavarāmāyāḥ vata, bhoḥ, prajāyāḥ bhavaratāyāḥ bhavasamuditāyāḥ samūlaṃ bhavam udabarhīt iti .

atha khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, māraḥ pāpmā anyataraṃ brahmapāriṣadyam anvāviśya mām etad avocat — sacet khalu tvam, mārṣa, evaṃ prajānāsi, sacet tvam evam anubuddhaḥ, mā śrāvakān upanaya, mā pravrajitān ; mā śrāvakāṇāṃ dharmaṃ deśaya, mā pravrajitānām ; mā śrāvakeṣu gṛdhim akārṣīḥ, mā pravrajiteṣu .

abhuvan khalu, bhikṣo, tvayā pūrvaṃ śramaṇabrāhmaṇāḥ loke arhantaḥ samyaksambuddhāḥ pratijānānāḥ . te śrāvakān upaninyuḥ pravrajitān, śrāvakāṇāṃ dharmaṃ deśayāṃ cakruḥ pravrajitānām, śrāvakeṣu gṛdhim akārṣuḥ pravrajiteṣu, te śrāvakān upanīya pravrajitān, śrāvakāṇāṃ dharmaṃ deśayitvā pravrajitānām, śrāvakeṣu gṛdhitacittāḥ pravrajiteṣu, kāyasya bhedāt prāṇopacchedāt hīne kāye pratiṣṭhitāḥ .

abhuvan ye punaḥ, bhikṣo, tvayā pūrvaṃ śramaṇabrāhmaṇāḥ loke arhantaḥ samyaksambuddhāḥ pratijānānāḥ . te na śrāvakān upaninyuḥ na pravrajitān, na śrāvakāṇāṃ dharmaṃ deśayāṃ cakruḥ na pravrajitānām, na śrāvakeṣu gṛdhim akārṣuḥ na pravrajiteṣu, te na śrāvakān upanīya na pravrajitān, na śrāvakāṇāṃ dharmaṃ deśayitvā na pravrajitānām, na śrāvakeṣu gṛdhitacittāḥ na pravrajiteṣu, kāyasya bhedāt prāṇopacchedāt praṇīte kāye pratiṣṭhitāḥ .

tat tvām aham, bhikṣo, evaṃ vadāmi — iṅgha tvam, mārṣa, alpotsukaḥ dṛṣṭadharmasukhavihāramanuyuktaḥ vihara, anākhyātaṃ kuśalaṃ hi, mārṣa, mā param avavādīḥ iti .

evam ukte, aham, bhikṣavaḥ, māraṃ pāpmānam etad avocam — jānāmi khalu tvām aham, pāpman, mā tvaṃ maṃsthāḥ — na māṃ jānāti iti . māraḥ tvam asi, pāpman . na māṃ tvam, pāpman, hitānukampī evaṃ vadasi ; ahitānukampī māṃ tvam, pāpman, evaṃ vadasi . tava hi, pāpman, evaṃ bhavati — yeṣāṃ śramaṇaḥ gautamaḥ dharmaṃ deśayiṣyati, te me viṣayam upātivartiṣyante iti .

asamyaksambuddhāḥ eva punaḥ te, pāpman, samānāḥ samyaksambuddhāḥ smaḥ iti pratijajñuḥ . ahaṃ khalu punaḥ, pāpman, samyaksambuddhaḥ eva samānaḥ samyaksambuddhaḥ asmi iti pratijānāmi . deśayann api hi, pāpman, tathāgataḥ śrāvakāṇāṃ dharmaṃ tādṛśaḥ eva, adeśayann api hi, pāpman, tathāgataḥ śrāvakāṇāṃ dharmaṃ tādṛśaḥ eva . upanayann api hi, pāpman, tathāgataḥ śrāvakān tādṛśaḥ eva, anupanayann api hi, pāpman, tathāgataḥ śrāvakān tādṛśaḥ eva . kasya hetoḥ ? tathāgatasya, pāpman, ye āsravāḥ saṃkleśikāḥ paunarbhavikāḥ sadarāḥ duḥkhavipākāḥ āyatiṃ jātijarāmaraṇīyāḥ — te prahīṇāḥ ucchinnamūlāḥ tālāvatthukṛtāḥ anabhāvaṃkṛtāḥ āyatim anutpādadharmāṇaḥ . tadyathā api, pāpman, tālaḥ mastakacchinnaḥ abhavyaḥ punar virūḍhyāi ; evam eva khalu, pāpman, tathāgatasya ye āsravāḥ saṃkleśikāḥ paunarbhavikāḥ sadarāḥ duḥkhavipākāḥ āyatiṃ jātijarāmaraṇīyāḥ — te prahīṇāḥ ucchinnamūlāḥ tālāvatthukṛtāḥ anabhāvaṃkṛtāḥ āyatim anutpādadharmāṇaḥ iti .

iti hi idaṃ mārasya ca anālapitatvāt brahmaṇaḥ ca abhinimantraṇatvāt, tasmāt asya vyākaraṇasya brahmanimantranam iti eva adhivacanam iti .
