Madhyama Nikāya 5 — anañjanasūktam — Unblemished

evaṃ mayā śrutam—ekasmin samaye bhagavān śrāvastyāṃ vyahārṣīj jetavane 'nāthapiṇḍadasyārāme. tatra khalv āyuṣmān śāriputro bhikṣūn āmantrayām āsa— “āyuṣmanto bhikṣava” iti.

“āyuṣmann” iti khalu te bhikṣava āyuṣmataḥ śāriputrasya pratyaśrauṣuḥ. āyuṣmān śāriputra etad avocat—

“catvāra ime, āyuṣmantaḥ, pudgalāḥ santaḥ saṃvidyamānā loke. katame catvāraḥ? ihāyuṣmantaḥ, ekatyaḥ pudgalaḥ sāñjana eva san 'asti me 'dhyātmam añjanam' iti yathābhūtaṃ na prajānāti. iha punar āyuṣmantaḥ, ekatyaḥ pudgalaḥ sāñjana eva san 'asti me 'dhyātmam añjanam' iti yathābhūtaṃ prajānāti. ihāyuṣmantaḥ, ekatyaḥ pudgalo 'nañjana eva san 'nāsti me 'dhyātmam añjanam' iti yathābhūtaṃ na prajānāti. iha punar āyuṣmantaḥ, ekatyaḥ pudgalo 'nañjana eva san 'nāsti me 'dhyātmam añjanam' iti yathābhūtaṃ prajānāti. tatrāyuṣmantaḥ, yo 'yaṃ pudgalaḥ sāñjana eva san 'asti me 'dhyātmam añjanam' iti yathābhūtaṃ na prajānāti, ayam anayor dvayoḥ pudgalayoḥ sāñjanayor eva sator hīnapuruṣa ākhyāyate. tatrāyuṣmantaḥ, yo 'yaṃ pudgalaḥ sāñjana eva san 'asti me 'dhyātmam añjanam' iti yathābhūtaṃ prajānāti, ayam anayor dvayoḥ pudgalayoḥ sāñjanayor eva satoḥ śreṣṭhapuruṣa ākhyāyate. tatrāyuṣmantaḥ, yo 'yaṃ pudgalo 'nañjana eva san 'nāsti me 'dhyātmam añjanam' iti yathābhūtaṃ na prajānāti, ayam anayor dvayoḥ pudgalayor anañjanayor eva sator hīnapuruṣa ākhyāyate. tatrāyuṣmantaḥ, yo 'yaṃ pudgalo 'nañjana eva san 'nāsti me 'dhyātmam añjanam' iti yathābhūtaṃ prajānāti, ayam anayor dvayoḥ pudgalayor anañjanayor eva satoḥ śreṣṭhapuruṣa ākhyāyata” iti.

evam ukte, āyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyana āyuṣmantaṃ śāriputram etad avocat—

“ko nu khalv āyuṣman śāriputra hetuḥ kaḥ pratyayo yenānayor dvayoḥ pudgalayoḥ sāñjanayor eva sator eko hīnapuruṣa ākhyāyate, ekaḥ śreṣṭhapuruṣa ākhyāyate? kaḥ punar āyuṣman śāriputra hetuḥ kaḥ pratyayo yenānayor dvayoḥ pudgalayor anañjanayor eva sator eko hīnapuruṣa ākhyāyate, ekaḥ śreṣṭhapuruṣa ākhyāyata” iti?

“tatrāyuṣman, yo 'yaṃ pudgalaḥ sāñjana eva san 'asti me 'dhyātmam añjanam' iti yathābhūtaṃ na prajānāti, tasyaitat prātikaṅkṣam— na chandaṃ janayiṣyati na vyāyaṃsyate na vīryam ārapsyate tasyāñjanasya prahāṇāya; sa sarāgaḥ sadveṣaḥ samohaḥ sāñjanaḥ saṃkliṣṭacittaḥ kālaṃ kariṣyati. tadyathāpy āyuṣman, kāṃsyapātry ābhṛtāpaṇād vā karmārakulād vā rajena ca malena ca paryavanaddhā. tām enāṃ svāmikā na caiva paribhuñjīran na ca paryavadāpayeyuḥ, rajaḥpathe caināṃ nikṣipeyuḥ. evaṃ hi sāyuṣman kāṃsyapātry aparena samayena saṃkliṣṭatarā syān malagṛhītā” iti?

ayaṃ khalv āyuṣman maudgalyāyana hetur ayaṃ pratyayo yenānayor dvayoḥ pudgalayoḥ sāñjanayor eva sator eko hīnapuruṣa ākhyāyate, ekaḥ śreṣṭhapuruṣa ākhyāyate. ayaṃ punar āyuṣman maudgalyāyana hetur ayaṃ pratyayo yenānayor dvayoḥ pudgalayor anañjanayor eva sator eko hīnapuruṣa ākhyāyate, ekaḥ śreṣṭhapuruṣa ākhyāyata” iti.

“añjanam añjanam ity āyuṣmann ucyate. kasya nu khalv etad āyuṣmann adhivacanaṃ yad idam añjanam” iti?

“pāpakānāṃ khalv etad āyuṣmann akuśalānām icchāvacarāṇām adhivacanam, yad idam añjanam” iti.

“sthānaṃ khalu punar etad āyuṣman vidyate yad ihaikatyasya bhikṣor evam icchotpadyeta— 'āpattiṃ ca vatāpannaḥ syām, na ca māṃ bhikṣavo jānīyur āpattim āpanna' iti. sthānaṃ khalu punar etad āyuṣman vidyate yat taṃ bhikṣuṃ bhikṣavo jānīyuḥ— 'āpattim āpanna' iti. 'jānanti māṃ bhikṣava āpattim āpanna' iti— iti sa kupito bhavaty apratītaḥ. yaś caiva khalv āyuṣman kopo yaś cāpratyayaḥ— ubhayam etad añjanam.

sthānaṃ khalu punar etad āyuṣman vidyate yad ihaikatyasya bhikṣor evam icchotpadyeta— 'āpattiṃ ca vatāpannaḥ syām, anuraho māṃ bhikṣavaś codayeyuḥ, no saṅghamadhye' iti. sthānaṃ khalu punar etad āyuṣman vidyate yat taṃ bhikṣuṃ bhikṣavaḥ saṅghamadhye codayeyuḥ, no 'nurahaḥ. 'saṅghamadhye māṃ bhikṣavaś codayanti, no 'nuraha' iti— iti sa kupito bhavaty apratītaḥ. yaś caiva khalv āyuṣman kopo yaś cāpratyayaḥ— ubhayam etad añjanam.

sthānaṃ khalu punar etad āyuṣman vidyate yad ihaikatyasya bhikṣor evam icchotpadyeta— 'āpattiṃ ca vatāpannaḥ syām, sapratipudgalo māṃ codayet, no 'pratipudgala' iti. sthānaṃ khalu punar etad āyuṣman vidyate yat taṃ bhikṣum apratipudgalaś codayet, na sapratipudgalaḥ. 'apratipudgalo māṃ codayati, na sapratipudgala' iti— iti sa kupito bhavaty apratītaḥ. yaś caiva khalv āyuṣman kopo yaś cāpratyayaḥ— ubhayam etad añjanam.

sthānaṃ khalu punar etad āyuṣman vidyate yad ihaikatyasya bhikṣor evam icchotpadyeta— 'aho vata mām eva śāstā pratipṛcchya pratipṛcchya bhikṣubhyo dharmaṃ deśayet, nānyaṃ bhikṣuṃ śāstā pratipṛcchya pratipṛcchya bhikṣubhyo dharmaṃ deśeyed' iti. sthānaṃ khalu punar etad āyuṣman vidyate yad anyaṃ bhikṣuṃ śāstā pratipṛcchya pratipṛcchya bhikṣubhyo dharmaṃ deśayet, na taṃ bhikṣuṃ śāstā pratipṛcchya pratipṛcchya bhikṣubhyo dharmaṃ deśayet. 'anyaṃ bhikṣuṃ śāstā pratipṛcchya pratipṛcchya bhikṣubhyo dharmaṃ deśayati, na māṃ śāstā pratipṛcchya pratipṛcchya bhikṣubhyo dharmaṃ deśayatī'ti— iti sa kupito bhavaty apratītaḥ. yaś caiva khalv āyuṣman kopo yaś cāpratyayaḥ— ubhayam etad añjanam.

sthānaṃ khalu punar etad āyuṣman vidyate yad ihaikatyasya bhikṣor evam icchotpadyeta— 'aho vata mām eva bhikṣavaḥ puraskṛtya puraskṛtya grāmaṃ bhaktāya praviśeyuḥ, nānyaṃ bhikṣuṃ bhikṣavaḥ puraskṛtya puraskṛtya grāmaṃ bhaktāya praviśeyur' iti. sthānaṃ khalu punar etad āyuṣman vidyate yad anyaṃ bhikṣuṃ bhikṣavaḥ puraskṛtya puraskṛtya grāmaṃ bhaktāya praviśeyuḥ, na taṃ bhikṣuṃ bhikṣavaḥ puraskṛtya puraskṛtya grāmaṃ bhaktāya praviśeyuḥ. 'anyaṃ bhikṣuṃ bhikṣavaḥ puraskṛtya puraskṛtya grāmaṃ bhaktāya praviśanti, na māṃ bhikṣavaḥ puraskṛtya puraskṛtya grāmaṃ bhaktāya praviśantī'ti— iti sa kupito bhavaty apratītaḥ. yaś caiva khalv āyuṣman kopo yaś cāpratyayaḥ— ubhayam etad añjanam.

sthānaṃ khalu punar etad āyuṣman vidyate yad ihaikatyasya bhikṣor evam icchotpadyeta— 'aho vatāham eva labheya bhaktāgra agrāsanam agrodakam agrapiṇḍam, nānyo bhikṣur labheta bhaktāgra agrāsanam agrodakam agrapiṇḍam' iti. sthānaṃ khalu punar etad āyuṣman vidyate yad anyo bhikṣur labheta bhaktāgra agrāsanam agrodakam agrapiṇḍam, na sa bhikṣur labheta bhaktāgra agrāsanam agrodakam agrapiṇḍam. 'anyo bhikṣur labhate bhaktāgra agrāsanam agrodakam agrapiṇḍam, nāhaṃ labhe bhaktāgra agrāsanam agrodakam agrapiṇḍam' iti— iti sa kupito bhavaty apratītaḥ. yaś caiva khalv āyuṣman kopo yaś cāpratyayaḥ— ubhayam etad añjanam.

sthānaṃ khalu punar etad āyuṣman vidyate yad ihaikatyasya bhikṣor evam icchotpadyeta— 'aho vatāham eva bhaktāgre bhuktāvān anumodeya, nānyo bhikṣur bhaktāgre bhuktāvān anumodeta' iti. sthānaṃ khalu punar etad āyuṣman vidyate yad anyo bhikṣur bhaktāgre bhuktāvān anumodeta, na sa bhikṣur bhaktāgre bhuktāvān anumodeta. 'anyo bhikṣur bhaktāgre bhuktāvān anumodate, nāhaṃ bhaktāgre bhuktāvān anumode' iti— iti sa kupito bhavaty apratītaḥ. yaś caiva khalv āyuṣman kopo yaś cāpratyayaḥ— ubhayam etad añjanam.

sthānaṃ khalu punar etad āyuṣman vidyate yad ihaikatyasya bhikṣor evam icchotpadyeta— 'aho vatāham evārāmagatānāṃ bhikṣūṇāṃ dharmaṃ deśayeya, nānyo bhikṣur ārāmagatānāṃ bhikṣūṇāṃ dharmaṃ deśayed' iti. sthānaṃ khalu punar etad āyuṣman vidyate yad anyo bhikṣur ārāmagatānāṃ bhikṣūṇāṃ dharmaṃ deśayet, na sa bhikṣur ārāmagatānāṃ bhikṣūṇāṃ dharmaṃ deśayet. 'anyo bhikṣur ārāmagatānāṃ bhikṣūṇāṃ dharmaṃ deśayati, nāham ārāmagatānāṃ bhikṣūṇāṃ dharmaṃ deśayāmī'ti— iti sa kupito bhavaty apratītaḥ. yaś caiva khalv āyuṣman kopo yaś cāpratyayaḥ— ubhayam etad añjanam.

sthānaṃ khalu punar etad āyuṣman vidyate yad ihaikatyasya bhikṣor evam icchotpadyeta— 'aho vatāham evārāmagatānāṃ bhikṣuṇīnāṃ dharmaṃ deśayeya… upāsakānāṃ dharmaṃ deśayeya… upāsikānāṃ dharmaṃ deśayeya, nānyo bhikṣur ārāmagatānām upāsikānāṃ dharmaṃ deśayed' iti. sthānaṃ khalu punar etad āyuṣman vidyate yad anyo bhikṣur ārāmagatānām upāsikānāṃ dharmaṃ deśayet, na sa bhikṣur ārāmagatānām upāsikānāṃ dharmaṃ deśayet. 'anyo bhikṣur ārāmagatānām upāsikānāṃ dharmaṃ deśayati, nāham ārāmagatānām upāsikānāṃ dharmaṃ deśayāmī'ti— iti sa kupito bhavaty apratītaḥ. yaś caiva khalv āyuṣman kopo yaś cāpratyayaḥ— ubhayam etad añjanam.

sthānaṃ khalu punar etad āyuṣman vidyate yad ihaikatyasya bhikṣor evam icchotpadyeta— 'aho vata mām eva bhikṣavaḥ satkuryur gurukuryur mānayeyuḥ pūjayeyuḥ, nānyaṃ bhikṣuṃ bhikṣavaḥ satkuryur gurukuryur mānayeyuḥ pūjayeyur' iti. sthānaṃ khalu punar etad āyuṣman vidyate yad anyaṃ bhikṣuṃ bhikṣavaḥ satkuryur gurukuryur mānayeyuḥ pūjayeyuḥ, na taṃ bhikṣuṃ bhikṣavaḥ satkuryur gurukuryur mānayeyuḥ pūjayeyuḥ. 'anyaṃ bhikṣuṃ bhikṣavaḥ satkurvanti gurukurvanti mānayanti pūjayanti, na māṃ bhikṣavaḥ satkurvanti gurukurvanti mānayanti pūjayantī'ti— iti sa kupito bhavaty apratītaḥ. yaś caiva khalv āyuṣman kopo yaś cāpratyayaḥ— ubhayam etad añjanam.

sthānaṃ khalu punar etad āyuṣman vidyate yad ihaikatyasya bhikṣor evam icchotpadyeta— 'aho vata mām eva bhikṣuṇyaḥ… upāsakāḥ… upāsikāḥ satkuryur gurukuryur mānayeyuḥ pūjayeyuḥ, nānyaṃ bhikṣum upāsikāḥ satkuryur gurukuryur mānayeyuḥ pūjayeyur' iti. sthānaṃ khalu punar etad āyuṣman vidyate yad anyaṃ bhikṣum upāsikāḥ satkuryur gurukuryur mānayeyuḥ pūjayeyuḥ, na taṃ bhikṣum upāsikāḥ satkuryur gurukuryur mānayeyuḥ pūjayeyuḥ. 'anyaṃ bhikṣum upāsikāḥ satkurvanti gurukurvanti mānayanti pūjayanti, na mām upāsikāḥ satkurvanti gurukurvanti mānayanti pūjayantī'ti— iti sa kupito bhavaty apratītaḥ. yaś caiva khalv āyuṣman kopo yaś cāpratyayaḥ— ubhayam etad añjanam.

sthānaṃ khalu punar etad āyuṣman vidyate yad ihaikatyasya bhikṣor evam icchotpadyeta— 'aho vatāham eva lābhī syāṃ praṇītānāṃ cīvarāṇām, nānyo bhikṣur lābhī syāt praṇītānāṃ cīvarāṇām' iti. sthānaṃ khalu punar etad āyuṣman vidyate yad anyo bhikṣur lābhī syāt praṇītānāṃ cīvarāṇām, na sa bhikṣur lābhī syāt praṇītānāṃ cīvarāṇām. 'anyo bhikṣur lābhī praṇītānāṃ cīvarāṇām, nāhaṃ lābhī praṇītānāṃ cīvarāṇām' iti— iti sa kupito bhavaty apratītaḥ. yaś caiva khalv āyuṣman kopo yaś cāpratyayaḥ— ubhayam etad añjanam.

sthānaṃ khalu punar etad āyuṣman vidyate yad ihaikatyasya bhikṣor evam icchotpadyeta— 'aho vatāham eva lābhī syāṃ praṇītānāṃ piṇḍapātānām… praṇītānāṃ śayanāsanānām… praṇītānāṃ glānapratyayabhaiṣajyapariṣkārāṇām, nānyo bhikṣur lābhī syāt praṇītānāṃ glānapratyayabhaiṣajyapariṣkārāṇām' iti. sthānaṃ khalu punar etad āyuṣman vidyate yad anyo bhikṣur lābhī syāt praṇītānāṃ glānapratyayabhaiṣajyapariṣkārāṇām, na sa bhikṣur lābhī syāt praṇītānāṃ glānapratyayabhaiṣajyapariṣkārāṇām. 'anyo bhikṣur lābhī praṇītānāṃ glānapratyayabhaiṣajyapariṣkārāṇām, nāhaṃ lābhī praṇītānāṃ glānapratyayabhaiṣajyapariṣkārāṇām' iti— iti sa kupito bhavaty apratītaḥ. yaś caiva khalv āyuṣman kopo yaś cāpratyayaḥ— ubhayam etad añjanam.

eṣāṃ khalv etad āyuṣman pāpakānām akuśalānām icchāvacarāṇām adhivacanam, yad idam añjanam iti.

yasya kasyacid āyuṣman bhikṣor ime pāpakā akuśalā icchāvacarā aprahīṇā dṛśyante caiva śrūyante ca, kiṃ cāpi sa bhavaty āraṇyakaḥ prāntaśayanāsanaḥ piṇḍapātikaḥ sāpadānacārī pāṃśukūliko rūkṣacīvaradharaḥ, atha khalv enaṃ sabrahmacāriṇo na caiva satkurvanti na gurukurvanti na mānayanti na pūjayanti. tat kasya hetoḥ? te hi tasyāyuṣmataḥ pāpakā akuśalā icchāvacarā aprahīṇā dṛśyante caiva śrūyante ca. tadyathāpy āyuṣman, kāṃsyapātry ābhṛtāpaṇād vā karmārakulād vā pariśuddhā paryavadātā. tām enāṃ svāmikā ahikuṇapaṃ vā kukurakuṇapaṃ vā manuṣyakuṇapaṃ vā racayitvānyayā kāṃsyapātryā pratyavakubjayitvāntarāpaṇaṃ pratipadyeyran. tām enaṃ jano dṛṣṭvaivaṃ vadet: 'ambho, kim evedaṃ hriyate janyajanyam ivā'ti? tām enām utthāpyāpāvṛtyāvalokayet. tasya sahadarśanenāmanāpatā ca saṃtiṣṭheta prātikūlyatā ca saṃtiṣṭheta jugupsatā ca saṃtiṣṭheta; jighatsitānām api na bhoktukāmatā syāt, prāg eva suhitānām.

evam evāyuṣman, yasya kasyacid bhikṣor ime pāpakā akuśalā icchāvacarā aprahīṇā dṛśyante caiva śrūyante ca, kiṃ cāpi sa bhavaty āraṇyakaḥ prāntaśayanāsanaḥ piṇḍapātikaḥ sāpadānacārī pāṃśukūliko rūkṣacīvaradharaḥ, atha khalv enaṃ sabrahmacāriṇo na caiva satkurvanti na gurukurvanti na mānayanti na pūjayanti. tat kasya hetoḥ? te hi tasyāyuṣmataḥ pāpakā akuśalā icchāvacarā aprahīṇā dṛśyante caiva śrūyante ca.

yasya kasyacid āyuṣman bhikṣor ime pāpakā akuśalā icchāvacarāḥ prahīṇā dṛśyante caiva śrūyante ca, kiṃ cāpi sa bhavati grāmantavihārī naimantraniko gṛhapaticīvaradharaḥ, atha khalv enaṃ sabrahmacāriṇaḥ satkurvanti gurukurvanti mānayanti pūjayanti. tat kasya hetoḥ? te hi tasyāyuṣmataḥ pāpakā akuśalā icchāvacarāḥ prahīṇā dṛśyante caiva śrūyante ca. tadyathāpy āyuṣman, kāṃsyapātry ābhṛtāpaṇād vā karmārakulād vā pariśuddhā paryavadātā. tām enāṃ svāmikāḥ śālīnām odanaṃ vicitakālakaṃ anekasūpam anekavyañjanaṃ racayitvānyayā kāṃsyapātryā pratyavakubjayitvāntarāpaṇaṃ pratipadyeyran. tām enaṃ jano dṛṣṭvaivaṃ vadet: 'ambho, kim evedaṃ hriyate janyajanyam ivā'ti? tām enām utthāpyāpāvṛtyāvalokayet. tasya sahadarśanena manāpatā ca saṃtiṣṭhetāprātikūlyatā ca saṃtiṣṭhetājagupsatā ca saṃtiṣṭheta; suhitānām api bhoktukāmatā syāt, prāg eva jighatsitānām.

evam evāyuṣman, yasya kasyacid bhikṣor ime pāpakā akuśalā icchāvacarāḥ prahīṇā dṛśyante caiva śrūyante ca, kiṃ cāpi sa bhavati grāmantavihārī naimantraniko gṛhapaticīvaradharaḥ, atha khalv enaṃ sabrahmacāriṇaḥ satkurvanti gurukurvanti mānayanti pūjayanti. tat kasya hetoḥ? te hi tasyāyuṣmataḥ pāpakā akuśalā icchāvacarāḥ prahīṇā dṛśyante caiva śrūyante ceti.”

evam ukte, āyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyana āyuṣmantaṃ śāriputram etad avocat— “upamā mām āyuṣman śāriputra pratibhātī”ti.

“pratibhātu tvām āyuṣman maudgalyāyanā”ti.

“ekam ihāham āyuṣman samayaṃ rājagṛhe vyahārṣaṃ girivraje. atha khalv aham āyuṣman pūrvāhnasamaye nivasya pātracīvaram ādāya rājagṛhaṃ piṇḍāya prāvikṣam. tena khalu punaḥ samayena samītir yānakāraputro rathasya nemiṃ takṣati. tam enaṃ pāṇḍuputra ājīvakaḥ purāṇayānakāraputraḥ pratyupasthito 'bhūt.

atha khalv āyuṣman pāṇḍuputrasyājīvakasya purāṇayānakāraputrasyaivaṃ cetasaḥ parivitarka udapādi— 'aho vatāyaṃ samītir yānakāraputro 'syā nemer imaṃ ca vaṅkam imaṃ ca jihmam imaṃ ca doṣaṃ takṣet, evam iyaṃ nemir apagatavaṅkāpagatajihmāpagatadoṣā śuddhā syāt sāre pratiṣṭhitā' iti.

yathā yathā khalv āyuṣman pāṇḍuputrasyājīvakasya purāṇayānakāraputrasya cetasaḥ parivitarko 'bhūt tathā tathā samītir yānakāraputras tasyā nemes taṃ ca vaṅkaṃ taṃ ca jihmaṃ taṃ ca doṣaṃ tatakṣa. atha khalv āyuṣman pāṇḍuputra ājīvakaḥ purāṇayānakāraputra āttamanā āttamanovācaṃ niścārayām āsa— 'hṛdayād hṛdayaṃ manye ājñāya takṣatī'ti.

evam evāyuṣman ye te pudgalā aśraddhāḥ, jīvikārthā na śraddhayāgārād anagārikāṃ pravrajitāḥ, śaṭhā māyāvinaḥ kaitavina uddhatā unnaḍāś capalā mukharā vikīrṇavācaḥ, indriyeṣv aguptadvārāḥ, bhojane 'mātrajñāḥ, jāgaryām ananuyuktāḥ, śrāmaṇye 'napekṣavantaḥ, śikṣāyāṃ na tīvragauravāḥ, bāhulikāḥ śāthalikāḥ, avakramaṇe pūrvamgamāḥ, praviveke nikṣiptadhuraḥ, kusītā hīnavīryā muṣitasmṛtayo 'samprajānānā asamāhitā vibhrāntacittā duṣprajñā eḍamūkāḥ, teṣām āyuṣmān śāriputro 'nena dharmaparyāyeṇa hṛdayād hṛdayaṃ manye ājñāya takṣati.

ye punaḥ te kulaputrāḥ śraddhayāgārād anagārikāṃ pravrajitāḥ, aśaṭhā amāyāvino 'kaitavino 'nuddhatā anunnaḍā acapalā amukharā avikīrṇavācaḥ, indriyeṣu guptadvārāḥ, bhojane mātrajñāḥ, jāgaryām anuyuktāḥ, śrāmaṇye 'pekṣavantaḥ, śikṣāyāṃ tīvragauravāḥ, na bāhulikā na śāthalikāḥ, avakramaṇe nikṣiptadhuraḥ, praviveke pūrvamgamāḥ, ārabdhavīryāḥ prahitātmāna upasthitasmṛtayaḥ samprajānānāḥ samāhitā ekāgracittāḥ prajñāvanto 'neḍamūkāḥ, ta āyuṣmataḥ śāriputrasyemaṃ dharmaparyāyaṃ śrutvā pibanti manye, ghasanti manye vacasā caiva manasā ca— 'sādhu vata bhoḥ sabrahmacārī akuśalād utthāpya kuśale pratiṣṭhāpayatī'ti.

tadyathāpy āyuṣman strī vā puruṣo vā daharo yuvā maṇḍanajātīyaḥ śiraḥsnāta utpalamālaṃ vā vārṣikīmālaṃ vātimuktakamālaṃ vā labdhvobhābhyāṃ hastābhyāṃ pratigṛhyottamāṅge śirasi pratiṣṭhāpayet; evam evāyuṣman ye te kulaputrāḥ śraddhayāgārād anagārikāṃ pravrajitāḥ, aśaṭhā amāyāvino 'kaitavino 'nuddhatā anunnaḍā acapalā amukharā avikīrṇavācaḥ, indriyeṣu guptadvārāḥ, bhojane mātrajñāḥ, jāgaryām anuyuktāḥ, śrāmaṇye 'pekṣavantaḥ, śikṣāyāṃ tīvragauravāḥ, na bāhulikā na śāthalikāḥ, avakramaṇe nikṣiptadhuraḥ, praviveke pūrvamgamāḥ, ārabdhavīryāḥ prahitātmāna upasthitasmṛtayaḥ samprajānānāḥ samāhitā ekāgracittāḥ prajñāvanto 'neḍamūkāḥ, ta āyuṣmataḥ śāriputrasyemaṃ dharmaparyāyaṃ śrutvā pibanti manye, ghasanti manye vacasā caiva manasā ca— 'sādhu vata bhoḥ sabrahmacārī akuśalād utthāpya kuśale pratiṣṭhāpayatī'“ti. itīha tāv ubhau mahānāgāv anyonyasya subhāṣitaṃ samanvamodiṣātām iti.
