evaṃ mayā śrutam — ekasmin samaye āyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyanaḥ bhargeṣu viharati sma śiśumāragirau bhaiṣakalāvane mṛgadāve .
tena khalu punaḥ samayena āyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyanaḥ abhyavakāśe caṅkramyate .
tena khalu punaḥ samayena māraḥ pāpmā āyuṣmataḥ mahāmaudgalyāyanasya kukṣigataḥ bhavati koṣṭham anupraviṣṭaḥ . atha khalu āyuṣmataḥ mahāmaudgalyāyanasya etad abhūt — kiṃ nu khalu me kukṣiḥ gargaraḥ iva ? māṣācitam manye iti . atha khalu āyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyanaḥ caṅkramāt avaruhya vihāraṃ praviśya prajñapte āsane nyaṣīdat . niṣadya khalu āyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyanaḥ pratyātmaṃ yoniśaḥ manasi akārṣīt .
adrākṣīt khalu āyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyanaḥ māraṃ pāpmānaṃ kukṣigataṃ koṣṭham anupraviṣṭam . dṛṣṭvā māraṃ pāpmānam etad avocat — niṣkrāma, pāpman ; niṣkrāma, pāpman . mā tathāgataṃ viheṭhaya, mā tathāgataśrāvakam . mā te bhūt dīrgharātram ahitāya duḥkhāya iti .
atha khalu mārasya pāpmanaḥ etad abhūt — ajānan eva khalu mām ayaṃ śramaṇaḥ apaśyan evam āha — niṣkrāma, pāpman ; niṣkrāma, pāpman . mā tathāgataṃ viheṭhaya, mā tathāgataśrāvakam . mā te bhūt dīrgharātram ahitāya duḥkhāya iti . yaḥ api asya saḥ śāstā saḥ api māṃ na eva kṣipraṃ jānīyāt, kutaḥ punar mām ayaṃ śrāvakaḥ jñāsyati iti ?
atha khalu āyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyanaḥ māraṃ pāpmānam etad avocat — evam api khalu tvām aham, pāpman, jānāmi, mā tvaṃ maṃsthāḥ — na māṃ jānāti iti . māraḥ tvam asi, pāpman ; tava hi, pāpman, evaṃ bhavati — ajānan eva khalu mām ayaṃ śramaṇaḥ apaśyan evam āha — niṣkrāma, pāpman ; niṣkrāma, pāpman . mā tathāgataṃ viheṭhaya, mā tathāgataśrāvakam . mā te bhūt dīrgharātram ahitāya duḥkhāya iti . yaḥ api asya saḥ śāstā saḥ api māṃ na eva kṣipraṃ jānīyāt, kutaḥ punar mām ayaṃ śrāvakaḥ jñāsyati iti ?

atha khalu māraḥ pāpmā āyuṣmataḥ mahāmaudgalyāyanasya mukhāt udgamya pratyargale asthāt . adrākṣīt khalu āyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyanaḥ māraṃ pāpmānaṃ pratyargale sthitam ; dṛṣṭvā māraṃ pāpmānam etad avocat — atra api khalu tvām aham, pāpman, paśyāmi ; mā tvaṃ maṃsthāḥ na māṃ paśyati iti . eṣaḥ tvam, pāpman, pratyargale sthitaḥ .
bhūtapūrvam aham, pāpman, dūṣī nāma māraḥ abhūvam, tasya me kālī nāma bhaginī . tasyāḥ tvaṃ putraḥ . saḥ me tvaṃ bhāgineyaḥ abhūḥ .
tena khalu punaḥ, pāpman, samayena krakucchandaḥ bhagavān arhan samyaksambuddhaḥ loke utpannaḥ bhavati . krakucchandasya khalu punaḥ, pāpman, bhagavataḥ arhataḥ samyaksambuddhasya vidhurasaṃjīvaṃ nāma śrāvakayugam abhūt agraṃ bhadrayugam . yāvantaḥ khalu punaḥ, pāpman, krakucchandasya bhagavataḥ arhataḥ samyaksambuddhasya śrāvakāḥ . teṣu na ca kaścit āyuṣmatā vidhureṇa samasamaḥ bhavati yad idaṃ dharmadeśanāyām . anena khalu evam, pāpman, paryāyeṇa āyuṣmataḥ vidhurasya vidhuraḥ iti eva samājñā udapādi .
āyuṣmān punaḥ, pāpman, saṃjīvaḥ araṇyagataḥ api vṛkṣamūlagataḥ api śūnyāgāragataḥ api alpakṛcchreṇa eva saṃjñāveditanirodhaṃ samāpadyate . bhūtapūrvam, pāpman, āyuṣmān saṃjīvaḥ anyatarasmin vṛkṣamūle saṃjñāveditanirodhaṃ samāpannaḥ niṣaṇṇaḥ bhavati . adrākṣuḥ khalu, pāpman, gopālakāḥ paśupālakāḥ kṛṣakāḥ pānthāḥ āyuṣmantaṃ saṃjīvam anyatarasmin vṛkṣamūle saṃjñāveditanirodhaṃ samāpannaṃ niṣaṇṇam ; dṛṣṭvā teṣām etad abhūt — āścaryaṃ vata bhoḥ, adbhutaṃ vata, bhoḥ . ayaṃ śramaṇaḥ niṣaṇṇaḥ eva kālaṅkṛtaḥ . hanta enam dahāma iti . atha khalu te, pāpman, gopālakāḥ paśupālakāḥ kṛṣakāḥ pānthāḥ tṛṇaṃ ca kāṣṭhaṃ ca gomayaṃ ca saṃkṛṣya āyuṣmataḥ saṃjīvasya kāye upacitya agniṃ dattvā prākraman .
atha khalu, pāpman, āyuṣmān saṃjīvaḥ tasyāḥ rātryāḥ atyayena tasyāḥ samāpatteḥ utthāya cīvarāṇi prasphoṭya pūrvāhṇasamaye paridhāya pātracīvaram ādāya grāmaṃ piṇḍāya prāviśat . adrākṣuḥ khalu te, pāpman, gopālakāḥ paśupālakāḥ kṛṣakāḥ pānthāḥ āyuṣmantaṃ saṃjīvaṃ piṇḍāya carantam ; dṛṣṭvā teṣām etad abhūt — āścaryaṃ vata bhoḥ, adbhutaṃ vata, bhoḥ . ayaṃ śramaṇaḥ niṣaṇṇaḥ eva kālaṅkṛtaḥ, saḥ ayaṃ pratisaṃjīvitaḥ iti . anena khalu evam, pāpman, paryāyeṇa āyuṣmataḥ saṃjīvasya saṃjīvaḥ iti eva samājñā udapādi .
atha khalu, pāpman, dūṣiṇaḥ mārasya etad abhūt — eṣāṃ khalu ahaṃ bhikṣūṇāṃ śīlavatāṃ kalyāṇadharmāṇāṃ na eva jānāmi āgatiṃ vā gatiṃ vā . yan nu aham brāhmaṇagṛhapatikān anvāviśeyam — eta, yūyaṃ bhikṣūn śīlavataḥ kalyāṇadharmān ākrośata paribhāṣadhvam roṣayata viheṭhayata . api eva nāma yuṣmābhiḥ ākruśyamānānāṃ paribhāṣyamānānāṃ roṣyamānānāṃ viheṭhyamānānāṃ syāt cittasya anyathātvam, yathā taṃ dūṣī māraḥ labheta avatāram iti . atha khalu saḥ, pāpman, dūṣī māraḥ brāhmaṇagṛhapatikān anvāviśat — eta, yūyaṃ bhikṣūn śīlavataḥ kalyāṇadharmān ākrośata paribhāṣadhvam roṣayata viheṭhayata . api eva nāma yuṣmābhiḥ ākruśyamānānāṃ paribhāṣyamānānāṃ roṣyamānānāṃ viheṭhyamānānāṃ syāt cittasya anyathātvam, yathā taṃ dūṣī māraḥ labheta avatāram iti .
atha khalu te, pāpman, brāhmaṇagṛhapatikāḥ anvāviṣṭāḥ dūṣiṇā māreṇa bhikṣūn śīlavataḥ kalyāṇadharmān ākrośanti paribhāṣante roṣayanti viheṭhayanti — ime punaḥ muṇḍakāḥ śramaṇakāḥ ibhyāḥ kṛṣṇāḥ bandhupādāpatyāḥ dhyāyinaḥ smaḥ dhyāyinaḥ smaḥ iti patitaskandhāḥ adhomukhāḥ madhurakajātāḥ dhyāyanti pradhyāyanti nidhyāyanti apadhyāyanti . tadyathā api nāma ulūkaḥ vṛkṣaśākhāyāṃ mūṣikaṃ mārgayamāṇaḥ dhyāyati pradhyāyati nidhyāyati apadhyāyati ; evam eva ime muṇḍakāḥ śramaṇakāḥ ibhyāḥ kṛṣṇāḥ bandhupādāpatyāḥ dhyāyinaḥ smaḥ dhyāyinaḥ smaḥ iti patitaskandhāḥ adhomukhāḥ madhurakajātāḥ dhyāyanti pradhyāyanti nidhyāyanti apadhyāyanti . tadyathā api nāma kroṣṭuḥ nadītīre matsyān mārgayamāṇaḥ dhyāyati pradhyāyati nidhyāyati apadhyāyati ; evam eva ime muṇḍakāḥ śramaṇakāḥ ibhyāḥ kṛṣṇāḥ bandhupādāpatyāḥ dhyāyinaḥ smaḥ dhyāyinaḥ smaḥ iti patitaskandhāḥ adhomukhāḥ madhurakajātāḥ dhyāyanti pradhyāyanti nidhyāyanti apadhyāyanti . tadyathā api nāma biḍālaḥ sandhiśamalasaṃkāratīre mūṣikaṃ mārgayamāṇaḥ dhyāyati pradhyāyati nidhyāyati apadhyāyati ; evam eva ime muṇḍakāḥ śramaṇakāḥ ibhyāḥ kṛṣṇāḥ bandhupādāpatyāḥ dhyāyinaḥ smaḥ dhyāyinaḥ smaḥ iti patitaskandhāḥ adhomukhāḥ madhurakajātāḥ dhyāyanti pradhyāyanti nidhyāyanti apadhyāyanti . tadyathā api nāma gardabhaḥ vahacchinnaḥ sandhiśamalasaṃkāratīre dhyāyati pradhyāyati nidhyāyati apadhyāyati ; evam eva ime muṇḍakāḥ śramaṇakāḥ ibhyāḥ kṛṣṇāḥ bandhupādāpatyāḥ dhyāyinaḥ smaḥ dhyāyinaḥ smaḥ iti patitaskandhāḥ adhomukhāḥ madhurakajātāḥ dhyāyanti pradhyāyanti nidhyāyanti apadhyāyanti iti .
ye khalu punaḥ, pāpman, tena samayena manuṣyāḥ kālaṃ kurvanti yadbhūyasā kāyasya bhedāt paraṃ maraṇāt apāyaṃ durgatiṃ vinipātaṃ narakam upapadyante .
atha khalu, pāpman, krakucchandaḥ bhagavān arhan samyaksambuddhaḥ bhikṣūn āmantrayata — anvāviṣṭāḥ khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, brāhmaṇagṛhapatikāḥ dūṣiṇā māreṇa — eta, yūyaṃ bhikṣūn śīlavataḥ kalyāṇadharmān ākrośata paribhāṣadhvam roṣayata viheṭhayata, api eva nāma yuṣmābhiḥ ākruśyamānānāṃ paribhāṣyamānānāṃ roṣyamānānāṃ viheṭhyamānānāṃ syāt cittasya anyathātvam, yathā taṃ dūṣī māraḥ labheta avatāram iti . eta, yūyam, bhikṣavaḥ, maitrīsahagatena cetasā ekāṃ diśaṃ sphārayitvā viharata, tathā dvitīyām, tathā tṛtīyām, tathā caturthīm . iti ūrdhvam adhaḥ tiryak sarvatra sarvātmatayā sarvāvantaṃ lokaṃ maitrīsahagatena cetasā vipulena mahāgatena apramāṇena avaireṇa avyābādhena sphārayitvā viharata . karuṇāsahagatena cetasā … muditāsahagatena cetasā … upekṣāsahagatena cetasā ekāṃ diśaṃ sphārayitvā viharata, tathā dvitīyām, tathā tṛtīyām, tathā caturthīm . iti ūrdhvam adhaḥ tiryak sarvatra sarvātmatayā sarvāvantaṃ lokaṃ upekṣāsahagatena cetasā vipulena mahāgatena apramāṇena avaireṇa avyābādhena sphārayitvā viharata iti .
atha khalu te, pāpman, bhikṣavaḥ krakucchandena bhagavatā arhatā samyaksambuddhena evam avavādyamānāḥ evam anuśiṣyamāṇāḥ araṇyagatāḥ api vṛkṣamūlagatāḥ api śūnyāgāragatāḥ api maitrīsahagatena cetasā ekāṃ diśaṃ sphārayitvā vyahārṣuḥ, tathā dvitīyām, tathā tṛtīyām, tathā caturthīm . iti ūrdhvam adhaḥ tiryak sarvatra sarvātmatayā sarvāvantaṃ lokaṃ maitrīsahagatena cetasā vipulena mahāgatena apramāṇena avaireṇa avyābādhena sphārayitvā vyahārṣuḥ . karuṇāsahagatena cetasā … muditāsahagatena cetasā … upekṣāsahagatena cetasā ekāṃ diśaṃ sphārayitvā vyahārṣuḥ, tathā dvitīyām, tathā tṛtīyām, tathā caturthīm . iti ūrdhvam adhaḥ tiryak sarvatra sarvātmatayā sarvāvantaṃ lokaṃ upekṣāsahagatena cetasā vipulena mahāgatena apramāṇena avaireṇa avyābādhena sphārayitvā vyahārṣuḥ .

atha khalu te, pāpman, bhikṣavaḥ krakucchandena bhagavatā arhatā samyaksambuddhena evam avavādyamānāḥ evam anuśiṣyamāṇāḥ araṇyagatāḥ api vṛkṣamūlagatāḥ api śūnyāgāragatāḥ api aśubhānupaśyinaḥ kāye vyahārṣuḥ, āhāre pratikūlasaṃjñinaḥ, sarvaloke anabhiratisaṃjñinaḥ, sarvasaṃskāreṣu anityānupaśyinaḥ .
atha khalu, pāpman, krakucchandaḥ bhagavān arhan samyaksambuddhaḥ pūrvāhṇasamaye paridhāya pātracīvaram ādāya āyuṣmatā vidhureṇa paścācchramaṇena grāmaṃ piṇḍāya prāviśat .
atha khalu, pāpman, dūṣī māraḥ anyataraṃ kumārakam anvāviśya śarkarāṃ gṛhītvā āyuṣmataḥ vidhurasya śirasi prahāram adāt ; śiraḥ vyabhinat . atha khalu, pāpman, āyuṣmān vidhuraḥ bhinnena śirasā lohitena galatā krakucchandam eva bhagavantam arhantaṃ samyaksambuddhaṃ pṛṣṭhataḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ anvabandhīt . atha khalu, pāpman, krakucchandaḥ bhagavān arhan samyaksambuddhaḥ nāgāvalokitam apalokayat — na vā ayaṃ dūṣī māraḥ mātrām ajñāsīt iti . sahāvalokanena ca punaḥ, pāpman, dūṣī māraḥ tasmāt ca sthānāt acyavata mahānarakaṃ ca upapādi .
tasya khalu punaḥ, pāpman, mahānarakasya trīṇi nāmadheyāni bhavanti — ṣaṭsparśāyatanikaḥ iti api, śaṅkusamāhataḥ iti api, pratyātmavedanīyaḥ iti api . atha khalu mām, pāpman, narakapālāḥ upasaṃkramya etad avocan — yadā khalu te, mārṣa, śaṅkunā śaṅkuḥ hṛdaye samāgacchet . atha enam tvaṃ jānīyāḥ — varṣasahasraṃ me narake pacyamānasya iti .
saḥ khalu aham, pāpman, bahūni varṣāṇi bahūni varṣaśatāni bahūni varṣasahasrāṇi tasmin mahānarake apacye . daśavarṣasahasrāṇi tasya eva mahānarakasya utsade apacye utthānīyāṃ nāma vedanāṃ vedayamānaḥ . tasya mama, pāpman, evaṃrūpaḥ kāyaḥ bhavati, tadyathā api manuṣyasya . evaṃrūpaṃ śiraḥ bhavati, tadyathā api matsyasya .
kīdṛśaḥ narakaḥ āsīt,
yatra dūṣī apacyata ;
vidhuraṃ śrāvakam āsādya,
krakucchandaṃ ca brāhmaṇam .
śatam āsīt ayaḥśaṅkavaḥ,
sarve pratyātmavedanāḥ ;
īdṛśaḥ narakaḥ āsīt,
yatra dūṣī apacyata ;
vidhuraṃ śrāvakam āsādya,
krakucchandaṃ ca brāhmaṇam .
yaḥ etam abhijānāti,
bhikṣuḥ buddhasya śrāvakaḥ ;
tādṛśaṃ bhikṣum āsādya,
kṛṣṇa duḥkhaṃ nigacchasi .
madhye sarasaḥ tiṣṭhanti,
vimānāḥ kalpasthāyinaḥ ;
vaiḍūryavarṇāḥ rucirāḥ,
arciṣmantaḥ prabhāsvarāḥ ;
apsarasaḥ tatra nṛtyanti,
pṛthu nānātvavarṇikāḥ .
yaḥ etam abhijānāti,
bhikṣuḥ buddhasya śrāvakaḥ ;
tādṛśaṃ bhikṣum āsādya,
kṛṣṇa duḥkhaṃ nigacchasi .
yaḥ vai buddhena coditaḥ,
bhikṣuḥ saṃghasya prekṣataḥ ;
mṛgāramātṛprāsādam,
pādāṅguṣṭhena akampayat .
yaḥ etam abhijānāti,
bhikṣuḥ buddhasya śrāvakaḥ ;
tādṛśaṃ bhikṣum āsādya,
kṛṣṇa duḥkhaṃ nigacchasi .
yaḥ vaijayantaṃ prāsādam,
pādāṅguṣṭhena akampayat ;
ṛddhibalena upastabdhaḥ,
saṃvejayat ca devatāḥ .
yaḥ etam abhijānāti,
bhikṣuḥ buddhasya śrāvakaḥ ;
tādṛśaṃ bhikṣum āsādya,
kṛṣṇa duḥkhaṃ nigacchasi .
yaḥ vaijayantaprāsāde,
śakraṃ saḥ paripṛcchati ;
api vāsava jānāsi,
tṛṣṇākṣayavimuktim ;
tasya śakraḥ vyākarot,
praśnaṃ pṛṣṭaḥ yathātatham .
yaḥ etam abhijānāti,
bhikṣuḥ buddhasya śrāvakaḥ ;
tādṛśaṃ bhikṣum āsādya,
kṛṣṇa duḥkhaṃ nigacchasi .
yaḥ brahmāṇaṃ paripṛcchati,
sudharmāyām abhitaḥ sabhām ;
adya api te āyuṣman dṛṣṭiḥ,
yā te dṛṣṭiḥ purā abhūt ;
paśyasi vyativartantam,
brahmaloke prabhāsvaram .
tasya brahmā vyākarot,
ānupūrvyaṃ yathātatham ;
na me mārṣa sā dṛṣṭiḥ,
yā me dṛṣṭiḥ purā abhūt .
paśyāmi vyativartantam,
brahmaloke prabhāsvaram ;
saḥ aham adya kathaṃ vadeyam,
ahaṃ nityaḥ asmi śāśvataḥ .
yaḥ etam abhijānāti,
bhikṣuḥ buddhasya śrāvakaḥ ;
tādṛśaṃ bhikṣum āsādya,
kṛṣṇa duḥkhaṃ nigacchasi .
yaḥ mahāmeroḥ kūṭam,
vimokṣeṇa asprākṣīt ;
vanaṃ pūrvavidehānām,
ye ca bhūmiśayāḥ narāḥ .
yaḥ etam abhijānāti,
bhikṣuḥ buddhasya śrāvakaḥ ;
tādṛśaṃ bhikṣum āsādya,
kṛṣṇa duḥkhaṃ nigacchasi .
na vai agniḥ cetayati,
ahaṃ bālaṃ dahāmi iti ;
bālaḥ ca jvalitam agnim,
āsādya taṃ saḥ dahyate .
evam eva tvaṃ māra,
āsādya taṃ tathāgatam ;
svayaṃ dhakṣyasi ātmānam,
bālaḥ agnim iva saṃspṛśan .
apuṇyaṃ prāsavīt māraḥ,
āsādya taṃ tathāgatam ;
kiṃ nu manyase pāpman,
na me pāpaṃ vipacyate .
kurvataḥ cīyate pāpam,
cirarātrāya antaka ;
māra nirvidyasva buddhāt,
āśāṃ mā kārṣīḥ bhikṣuṣu .
iti māram atarjayat,
bhikṣuḥ bhaiṣakalāvane ;
tataḥ saḥ durmanāḥ yakṣaḥ,
tatra eva antardadhe iti .
māratarjanīyasūtraṃ niṣṭhitaṃ daśamam .
kṣudrayamakavargaḥ niṣṭhitaḥ pañcamaḥ .
mūlapañcāśatkam samāptam .
