Saṃyukta Nikāya 2.6 — Kāmada
श्रावस्तीनिदानम्। एकान्ते स्थितः खलु कामदो देवपुत्रो भगवन्तमेतदवोचत् — “दुष्करं भगवन्, सुदुष्करं भगवन्” इति।
śrāvastīnidānam. ekānte sthitaḥ khalu kāmado devaputro bhagavantam etad avocat — “duṣkaraṃ bhagavan, suduṣkaraṃ bhagavan” iti.
The setting is Śrāvastī. Standing to one side, the devaputra Kāmada said this to the Bhagavān: “It is difficult, Bhagavan, very difficult!”
“दुष्करं वापि कुर्वन्ति (कामदेति भगवान्), शैक्षाः शीलसमाहिताः।
स्थितात्मनोऽनगार्योपेतस्य, तुष्टिर्भवति सुखावहा” इति।
“duṣkaraṃ vāpi kurvanti (kāmadeti bhagavān), śaikṣāḥ śīlasamāhitāḥ.
sthitātmano ’nagāryopetasya, tuṣṭir bhavati sukhāvahā” iti.
“They do what is difficult,” (said the Bhagavān to Kāmada), “the trainees who are composed in virtue.
For one who is self-established, endowed with the homeless life, contentment brings happiness.”
“दुर्लभा भगवन् यदिदं तुष्टिः” इति।
“durlabhā bhagavan yad idaṃ tuṣṭiḥ” iti.
“This contentment is hard to obtain, Bhagavān.”
“दुर्लभं वापि लभन्ते (कामदेति भगवान्), चित्तोपशमे रताः।
येषां दिवा च रात्रौ च, भावनायां रतं मनः” इति।
“durlabhaṃ vāpi labhante (kāmadeti bhagavān), cittopaśame ratāḥ.
yeṣāṃ divā ca rātrau ca, bhāvanāyāṃ rataṃ manaḥ” iti.
“They find what is hard to find,” (said the Bhagavān to Kāmada), “who delight in the calming of the mind.
Those whose minds, day and night, delight in meditation.”
“दुःसमाधेयं भगवन् यदिदं चित्तम्” इति।
“duḥsamādheyaṃ bhagavan yad idaṃ cittam” iti.
“This mind is hard to compose, Bhagavān.”
“दुःसमाधेयं वापि समादधते (कामदेति भगवान्), इन्द्रियोपशमे रताः।
ते छित्त्वा मृत्योर्जालम्, आर्या गच्छन्ति कामद” इति।
“duḥsamādheyaṃ vāpi samādadhate (kāmadeti bhagavān), indriyopaśame ratāḥ.
te chittvā mṛtyor jālam, āryā gacchanti kāmada” iti.
“They compose what is hard to compose,” (said the Bhagavān to Kāmada), “who delight in the calming of the senses.
Having cut through the net of death, the noble ones go on, Kāmada.”
“दुर्गमो भगवन् विषमः मार्गः” इति।
“durgamo bhagavan viṣamaḥ mārgaḥ” iti.
“The path is impassable, Bhagavān, uneven.”
“दुर्गमे विषमे वापि, आर्या गच्छन्ति कामद।
अनार्या विषमे मार्गे, पतन्त्यवाङ्शिरसः।
आर्याणां समो मार्गः, आर्या हि विषमे समाः” इति।
“durgame viṣame vāpi, āryā gacchanti kāmada.
anāryā viṣame mārge, patanty avāṅśirasaḥ.
āryāṇāṃ samo mārgaḥ, āryā hi viṣame samāḥ” iti.
“Even on the impassable and uneven, the noble ones go on, Kāmada.
The ignoble fall headfirst on the uneven path.
For the noble ones, the path is smooth, for the noble are even on the uneven.”
