saṃyuktanikāyaḥ 2.7 — pañcālacaṇḍasūktam
Saṃyukta Nikāya 2.7 — Pañcālacaṇḍa
śrāvastīnidānam. ekānte sthitaḥ khalu pañcālacaṇḍo devaputro bhagavato'ntike imāṃ gāthām abhāṣata —
The setting is Śrāvastī. Standing to one side, the devaputra Pāñcālacaṇḍa spoke this verse in the presence of the Bhagavān:
“sambādhe batāvakāśam, avindad bhūrimedhāḥ.
yo dhyānam abudhyata buddhaḥ, pratilīnarṣabho muniḥ” iti.
“In a constricted space, the one of vast wisdom indeed found an opening.
The awakened one who understood meditation, the sage, the foremost among the secluded.”
“sambādhe vāpi vindanti (pañcālacaṇḍeti bhagavān), dharmaṃ nirvāṇaprāptaye.
ye smṛtiṃ pratyalabhanta, samyak te susamāhitāḥ” iti.
“Even in a constricted space,” (said the Bhagavān to Pañcālacaṇḍa), “they find the Dharma for the attainment of Nirvāṇa.
Those who have acquired alertness of mind, they are perfectly composed.”
