sūktanipātaḥ 1.2 — dhanikasūktam
Sūkta Nipāta 1.2 — Dhanika the Cowherd
“पक्तौदनो दुग्धक्षीरोऽहमस्मि, (इति धनिको गोपः)
अनुतीरे मह्याः समानवासः।
छन्ना कुटिराहितोऽग्निः,
अथ चेत्प्रार्थयसे प्रवर्ष देव”।
“paktaudano dugdhakṣīro ’ham asmi, (iti dhaniko gopaḥ)
anutīre mahyāḥ samānavāsaḥ.
channā kuṭir āhito ’gniḥ,
atha cet prārthayase pravarṣa deva”.
“I have cooked my rice, I have milked my cows; (said Dhanika the cowherd)
I am living with my family on the banks of the Mahī river.
My hut is thatched, my fire is lit;
So, if you wish, O sky-god, rain on!”
“अक्रोधनो विगतखीलोऽहमस्मि, (इति भगवान्)
अनुतीरे मह्या एकरात्रिवासः।
विवृता कुटिर्निर्वृतोऽग्निः,
अथ चेत्प्रार्थयसे प्रवर्ष देव”।
“akrodhano vigatakhīlo ’ham asmi, (iti bhagavān)
anutīre mahyā ekarātrivāsaḥ.
vivṛtā kuṭir nirvṛto ’gniḥ,
atha cet prārthayase pravarṣa deva”.
“I am free from anger, my impediments gone; (said the Bhagavān)
I am dwelling for one night on the banks of the Mahī river.
My hut is open, my fire is extinguished;
So, if you wish, O sky-god, rain on!”
“दंशकमशका न विद्यन्ते, (इति धानिको गोपः)
कच्छे रूढतृणे चरन्ति गावः।
वृष्टिमपि सहेरन्नागताम्,
अथ चेत्प्रार्थयसे प्रवर्ष देव”।
“daṃśakamaśakā na vidyante, (iti dhāniko gopaḥ)
kacche rūḍhatṛṇe caranti gāvaḥ.
vṛṣṭim api saherann āgatām,
atha cet prārthayase pravarṣa deva”.
“There are no gadflies or mosquitoes here; (said Dhanika the cowherd)
The cows graze in the meadow of lush grass.
They can endure the coming rain;
So, if you wish, O sky-god, rain on!”
“बद्धा हि भसत्सुसंस्कृता, (इति भगवान्)
तीर्णः पारगतो विनीयौघम्।
अर्थो भसदो न विद्यते,
अथ चेत्प्रार्थयसे प्रवर्ष देव”।
“baddhā hi bhasat susaṃskṛtā, (iti bhagavān)
tīrṇaḥ pāragato vinīyaugham.
artho bhasado na vidyate,
atha cet prārthayase pravarṣa deva”.
“My raft¹ is bound fast and well-made; (said the Bhagavān)
I have crossed over, gone to the other shore, having subdued the flood.
There is no more need for a raft;
So, if you wish, O sky-god, rain on!”
“गोपी ममाश्रवालोला, (इति धानिको गोपः)
दीर्घरात्रं संवासिनी मनोज्ञा।
तस्या न शृणोमि किञ्चित्पापम्,
अथ चेत्प्रार्थयसे प्रवर्ष देव”।
“gopī mamāśravālolā, (iti dhāniko gopaḥ)
dīrgharātraṃ saṃvāsinī manojñā.
tasyā na śṛṇomi kiñcit pāpam,
atha cet prārthayase pravarṣa deva”.
“My wife is obedient, not fickle, (said Dhanika the cowherd)
My companion for a long time and delightful.
I hear no evil of her;
So, if you wish, O sky-god, rain on!”
“चित्तं ममाश्रवं विमुक्तं, (इति भगवान्)
दीर्घरात्रं परिभावितं सुदान्तम्।
पापं पुनर्मे न विद्यते,
अथ चेत्प्रार्थयसे प्रवर्ष देव”।
“cittaṃ mamāśravaṃ vimuktaṃ, (iti bhagavān)
dīrgharātraṃ paribhāvitaṃ sudāntam.
pāpaṃ punar me na vidyate,
atha cet prārthayase pravarṣa deva”.
“My mind is obedient and liberated, (said the Bhagavān)
Cultivated for a long time and well-tamed.
There is no evil in me;
So, if you wish, O sky-god, rain on!”
“आत्मवेतनभृतोऽहमस्मि, (इति धानिको गोपः)
पुत्राश्च मे समानिका अरोगाः।
तेषां न शृणोमि किञ्चित्पापम्,
अथ चेत्प्रार्थयसे प्रवर्ष देव”।
“ātmavetanabhṛto ’ham asmi, (iti dhāniko gopaḥ)
putrāś ca me samānikā arogāḥ.
teṣāṃ na śṛṇomi kiñcit pāpam,
atha cet prārthayase pravarṣa deva”.
“I support myself by my own earnings, (said Dhanika the cowherd)
And my sons live with me, free from illness.
I hear no evil of them;
So, if you wish, O sky-god, rain on!”
“नाहं भृतकोऽस्मि कस्यचित्, (इति भगवान्)
निर्विष्टेन चरामि सर्वलोके।
अर्थो भृत्या न विद्यते,
अथ चेत्प्रार्थयसे प्रवर्ष देव”।
“nāhaṃ bhṛtako ’smi kasyacit, (iti bhagavān)
nirviṣṭena carāmi sarvaloke.
artho bhṛtyā na vidyate,
atha cet prārthayase pravarṣa deva”.
“I am no one's servant; (said the Bhagavān)
With what I have gained, I wander the whole world.
I have no need for wages;
So, if you wish, O sky-god, rain on!”
“सन्ति वशाः सन्ति धेनुपाः, (इति धानिको गोपः)
गोगर्भिण्यः प्रस्रविण्योऽपि सन्ति।
ऋषभोऽपि गवाम्पतिरिहास्ति,
अथ चेत्प्रार्थयसे प्रवर्ष देव”।
“santi vaśāḥ santi dhenupāḥ, (iti dhāniko gopaḥ)
gogarbhiṇyaḥ prasraviṇyo ’pi santi.
ṛṣabho ’pi gavāmpatir ihāsti,
atha cet prārthayase pravarṣa deva”.
“I have barren cows, I have heifers, (said Dhanika the cowherd)
Cows in calf, and cows in milk.
I also have a bull, the lord of the herd;
So, if you wish, O sky-god, rain on!”
“न सन्ति वशा न सन्ति धेनुपाः, (इति भगवान्)
गोगर्भिण्यः प्रस्रविण्योऽपि न सन्ति।
ऋषभोऽपि गवाम्पतिरिह नास्ति,
अथ चेत्प्रार्थयसे प्रवर्ष देव”।
“na santi vaśā na santi dhenupāḥ, (iti bhagavān)
gogarbhiṇyaḥ prasraviṇyo ’pi na santi.
ṛṣabho ’pi gavāmpatir iha nāsti,
atha cet prārthayase pravarṣa deva”.
“I have no barren cows, no heifers, (said the Bhagavān)
No cows in calf, and no cows in milk.
I also have no bull, no lord of the herd;
So, if you wish, O sky-god, rain on!”
“कीला निखाता असम्प्रवेधिनः, (इति धानिको गोपः)
दामानि मौञ्जामयानि नवानि सुसंस्थानानि।
न हि शक्ष्यन्ति धेनुपा अपि छेत्तुम्,
अथ चेत्प्रार्थयसे प्रवर्ष देव”।
“kīlā nikhātā asampravedhinaḥ, (iti dhāniko gopaḥ)
dāmāni mauñjāmayāni navāni susaṃsthānāni.
na hi śakṣyanti dhenupā api chettum,
atha cet prārthayase pravarṣa deva”.
“The stakes are driven in, unshakable; (said Dhanika the cowherd)
The tethers are new and well-made of muñja grass.
Not even the young heifers can break them;
So, if you wish, O sky-god, rain on!”
“ऋषभ इव छित्त्वा बन्धनानि, (इति भगवान्)
नागः पूतिलतामिव दालयित्वा।
नाहं पुनरुपैष्यामि गर्भशय्याम्,
अथ चेत्प्रार्थयसे प्रवर्ष देव”।
“ṛṣabha iva chittvā bandhanāni, (iti bhagavān)
nāgaḥ pūtilatām iva dālayitvā.
nāhaṃ punar upaiṣyāmi garbhaśayyām,
atha cet prārthayase pravarṣa deva”.
“Like a bull having broken his bonds, (said the Bhagavān)
Like an elephant having torn a rotten creeper,
I will not enter a womb again;
So, if you wish, O sky-god, rain on!”
निम्नं च स्थलं च पूरयन्,
महामेघः प्रावर्षीत्तावदेव।
श्रुत्वा देवस्य वर्षतः,
इममर्थं धानिकोऽभाषत।
nimnaṃ ca sthalaṃ ca pūrayan,
mahāmeghaḥ prāvarṣīt tāvad eva.
śrutvā devasya varṣataḥ,
imam arthaṃ dhāniko ’bhāṣata.
Then, filling both the lowlands and the highlands,
A great cloud rained down at that very moment.
Hearing the sky-god raining,
Dhanika spoke these words.
“लाभा बत नोऽनाल्पाः,
यद्वयं भगवन्तमद्राक्ष्म।
शरणं त्वामुपैमश्चक्षुष्मन्,
शास्ता नो भव त्वं महामुने।
“lābhā bata no ’nālpāḥ,
yad vayaṃ bhagavantam adrākṣma.
śaraṇaṃ tvām upaimaś cakṣuṣman,
śāstā no bhava tvaṃ mahāmune.
“Indeed, our gain is not small,
That we have seen the Bhagavān!
We go for refuge to you, O one with vision;
Be our teacher, O great sage.
गोपी चाहं चाश्रवौ,
ब्रह्मचर्यं सुगते चरावहै।
जातिमरणस्य पारगौ,
दुःखस्यान्तकरौ भवावहै”।
gopī cāhaṃ cāśravau,
brahmacaryaṃ sugate carāvahai.
jātimaraṇasya pāragau,
duḥkhasyāntakarau bhavāvahai”.
My wife and I, being obedient,
Will practice the holy life under the Well-farer (Sugata).
Going beyond birth and death,
We shall make an end of suffering.”
“नन्दति पुत्रैः पुत्रवान्, (इति मारः पाप्मा)
गोमान् गोभिस्तथैव नन्दति।
उपधयो हि नरस्य नन्दनाः,
न हि स नन्दति यो निरुपधिः”।
“nandati putraiḥ putravān, (iti māraḥ pāpmā)
gomān gobhis tathaiva nandati.
upadhayo hi narasya nandanāḥ,
na hi sa nandati yo nirupadhiḥ”.
“He who has sons rejoices in his sons; (thus spoke Māra)
Likewise, he who has cattle rejoices in his cattle.
For acquisitions² are a man's delight;
He who has no acquisitions does not rejoice.”
“शोचति पुत्रैः पुत्रवान्, (इति भगवान्)
गोमान् गोभिस्तथैव शोचति।
उपधयो हि नरस्य शोचनाः,
न हि स शोचति यो निरुपधिः” इति।
“śocati putraiḥ putravān, (iti bhagavān)
gomān gobhis tathaiva śocati.
upadhayo hi narasya śocanāḥ,
na hi sa śocati yo nirupadhiḥ” iti.
“He who has sons grieves because of his sons; (said the Bhagavān)
Likewise, he who has cattle grieves because of his cattle.
For acquisitions are a man's grief;
He who has no acquisitions does not grieve.”
धानिकसूक्तं द्वितीयम्।
dhānikasūktaṃ dvitīyam.
The discourse to Dhanika, the second.
