evaṃ mayā śrutam. ekasmin samaye bhagavān rājagṛhe vyahārṣīd veṇuvane kalandakanivāpe.
tena khalu samayena āyuṣmān rāhulo 'pi rājagṛhe vyahārṣīt tapodārāme. atha khalu bhagavān rātryā atyayāt pūrvāhnasamaye nivasya pātracīvaram ādāya rājagṛhaṃ piṇḍāya prāvikṣat. rājagṛhe piṇḍāya caritvā kṛtabhaktakṛtyo paścādbhaktapiṇḍapātapratikranto yena tapodārāmo yenāyuṣmato rāhulasya vihāras tenopajagāma. adrākṣīd āyuṣmān rāhulo bhagavantaṃ dūrad evāgacchantam, dṛṣṭvā ca punaḥ pratyudgamyopajagāma, bhagavataḥ pātracīvaraṃ pratigṛhya, āsanaṃ prajñāpayām āsa, pādaprakṣālanodakam upanāyayām āsa. prakṣālya bhagavān pādau prajñapta evāsane nyaṣīdat.
atha khalu bhagavān udakapātraṃ gṛhītvā stokam udakam avaśiṣya rāhulam āmantrayām āsa: “rāhula, paśyasi tvaṃ mayedam udakapātraṃ gṛhītvā stokam udakam avaśiṣṭam iti?”
“paśyāmi bhagavan” ity āyuṣmān rāhulo bhagavantaṃ pratyāha.
bhagavān āha: “evam eva rāhula, teṣāṃ śrāmaṇyaṃ stokaṃ bhavati, ye saṃprajānan mṛṣā vādanti, na lajjante nānutapyante, ahrīkā anapatrapāś ca. rāhula, teṣāṃ nāsti kiṃcit pāpaṃ karma yad akartavyam iti vadāmi. tasmāt tarhi rāhula, evaṃ te śikṣitavyam: 'hāsyārtham api mṛṣā na vakṣyāmi' iti.”
atha khalu bhagavān yat tad udakapātre stokam udakam avaśiṣṭaṃ, tat sarvaṃ niṣiñcya rāhulam pṛcchati sma: “paśyasi tvaṃ rāhula, mayā yat tad udakapātre stokam udakam avaśiṣṭaṃ, tat sarvaṃ niṣiktam iti?”
“paśyāmi bhagavan.”
bhagavān āha: “evam eva rāhula, teṣāṃ śrāmaṇyam apaviddhaṃ bhavati, ye saṃprajānan mṛṣā vādanti, na lajjante nānutapyante, ahrīkā anapatrapāś ca. rāhula, teṣāṃ nāsti kiṃcit pāpaṃ karma yad akartavyam iti vadāmi. tasmāt tarhi rāhula, evaṃ te śikṣitavyam: 'hāsyārtham api mṛṣā na vakṣyāmi' iti.”
atha khalu bhagavān taṃ riktam udakapātraṃ nīcāmukhaṃ nyubjya pṛcchati sma: “paśyasi tvaṃ rāhula, mayedam udakapātraṃ riktam nīcāmukhaṃ nyubjam iti?”
“paśyāmi bhagavan.”
bhagavān āha: “evam eva rāhula, teṣāṃ śrāmaṇyam avāṅmukhaṃ nyubjaṃ bhavati, ye saṃprajānan mṛṣā vādanti, na lajjante nānutapyante, ahrīkā anapatrapāś ca. rāhula, teṣāṃ nāsti kiṃcit pāpaṃ karma yad akartavyam iti vadāmi. tasmāt tarhi rāhula, evaṃ te śikṣitavyam: 'hāsyārtham api mṛṣā na vakṣyāmi' iti.”
atha khalu bhagavān tam avāṅmukham udakapātram uttānaṃ kṛtvā pṛcchati sma: “paśyasi tvaṃ rāhula, mayā tam avāṅmukham udakapātram uttānaṃ kṛtam iti?”
“paśyāmi bhagavan.”
bhagavān āha: “evam eva rāhula, teṣāṃ śrāmaṇyam uttānaṃ riktaṃ bhavati, ye saṃprajānan mṛṣā vādanti, na lajjante nānutapyante, ahrīkā anapatrapāś ca. rāhula, teṣāṃ nāsti kiṃcit pāpaṃ karma yad akartavyam iti vadāmi. tasmāt tarhi rāhula, evaṃ te śikṣitavyam: 'hāsyārtham api mṛṣā na vakṣyāmi' iti.
rāhula, tadyathāpi nāma rājño bhadro nāgaḥ saṃgrāmam avatīrṇaḥ pūrvābhyāṃ pādābhyāṃ yudhyate, paścimābhyāṃ pādābhyāṃ yudhyate, vālena śroṇyā pṛṣṭhena pārśvena grīvayā śirasā karṇābhyāṃ dantābhyāṃ ca yudhyate, sarvam eva prayuṅkte, kevalaṃ tu śuṇḍāṃ rakṣati, tam enaṃ hastipako dṛṣṭvaivaṃ cintayati: 'ayaṃ rājño bhadro nāgaḥ prāṇān rakṣati. tat kasya hetoḥ? ayaṃ hi rājño bhadro nāgaḥ saṃgrāmam avatīrṇaḥ pūrvābhyāṃ pādābhyāṃ yudhyate, paścimābhyāṃ pādābhyāṃ yudhyate, vālena śroṇyā pṛṣṭhena pārśvena grīvayā śirasā karṇābhyāṃ dantābhyāṃ ca yudhyate, sarvam eva prayuṅkte, kevalaṃ tu śuṇḍāṃ rakṣati.' rāhula, yadā tu rājño bhadro nāgaḥ saṃgrāmam avatīrṇaḥ pūrvābhyāṃ pādābhyāṃ yudhyate, paścimābhyāṃ pādābhyāṃ yudhyate, vālena śroṇyā pṛṣṭhena pārśvena grīvayā śirasā karṇābhyāṃ dantābhyāṃ śuṇḍayā ca yudhyate, sarvam eva prayuṅkte, tam enaṃ hastipako dṛṣṭvaivaṃ cintayati: 'ayaṃ rājño bhadro nāgo na punaḥ prāṇān rakṣati tyaktajīvitaḥ. tat kasya hetoḥ? ayaṃ hi rājño bhadro nāgaḥ saṃgrāmam avatīrṇaḥ pūrvābhyāṃ pādābhyāṃ yudhyate, paścimābhyāṃ pādābhyāṃ yudhyate, vālena śroṇyā pṛṣṭhena pārśvena grīvayā śirasā karṇābhyāṃ dantābhyāṃ śuṇḍayā ca yudhyate, sarvam eva prayuṅkte.' rāhula, yadā rājño bhadro nāgaḥ saṃgrāmam avatīrṇaḥ pūrvābhyāṃ pādābhyāṃ yudhyate, paścimābhyāṃ pādābhyāṃ yudhyate, vālena śroṇyā pṛṣṭhena pārśvena grīvayā śirasā karṇābhyāṃ dantābhyāṃ śuṇḍayā ca yudhyate, sarvam eva prayuṅkte, tadāhaṃ rāhula vadāmi, nāsti kiṃcid asya rājño bhadrasya nāgasya saṃgrāmam avatīrṇasyākāryaṃ pāpaṃ nāmeti. evam eva rāhula, yasya kasya cit saṃprajānan mṛṣāvāde na lajjā nānutāpo na hrīr nāpatrāpyaṃ vidyate, rāhula, tasya nāsti kiṃcit pāpaṃ karma yad akartavyam iti vadāmi. tasmāt tarhi rāhula, evaṃ te śikṣitavyam: 'hāsyārtham api mṛṣā na vakṣyāmi' iti.”
atha khalu bhagavān imā gāthā babhāṣe:
ekaṃ dharmam atītasya, mṛṣāvādina jantunaḥ. abhītoḥ paralokāt tu, nāsti pāpam akāriyam. śreyo 'yogūḍā bhuktās, taptā agniśikhopamāḥ. na tu duḥśīlavṛttena, rāṣṭrapiṇḍaḥ prabhuñjitaḥ. yadi bibhītha duḥkhāt tu, yadi vo duḥkham apriyam. mā kārṣṭa pāpakaṃ karma, āvir vā yadi vā rahaḥ. yadi vā pāpakaṃ karma, kṛtaṃ vo yadi kriyate. naiva duḥkhāt pramuktir hi, utpatyāpi palāyatām.
bhagavān imā gāthā bhāṣitvā rāhulaṃ pṛcchati sma: “tat kiṃ manyase rāhula, kim artham ādarśa iti?”
āyuṣmān rāhulaḥ pratyāha: “pratyavekṣaṇārthaṃ bhagavan, mukhaṃ me śuddham aśuddhaṃ veti dṛṣṭum.”
“evam eva rāhula, yadi tvaṃ kāyena karma kartukāmo bhaves, tat te kāyakarma pratyavekṣitavyam: 'yad aham idaṃ kāyena karma kartukāmaḥ, kim idaṃ kāyakarma śuddham aśuddhaṃ vā? svārtham api parārtham api?' rāhula, sacet tvaṃ pratyavekṣamāṇa evaṃ jānīyāḥ: 'yad aham idaṃ kāyena karma kartukāmas, tad idaṃ kāyakarmāśuddham, svārtham api parārtham api, akuśalam idaṃ, duḥkhodarkaṃ duḥkhavipākam iti.' rāhula, evarūpaṃ te kāyakarma varjayitavyam. rāhula, sacet tvaṃ pratyavekṣamāṇa evaṃ jānīyāḥ: 'yad aham idaṃ kāyena karma kartukāmas, tad idaṃ kāyakarma śuddham, svārtham api parārtham api, kuśalam idaṃ, sukhodarkaṃ sukhavipākam iti.' rāhula, evarūpaṃ te kāyakarma sevitavyam.
rāhula, sacet tvaṃ kāyena karma karoṣi, tat te kāyakarma pratyavekṣitavyam: 'yad aham idaṃ kāyena karma karomi, kim idaṃ kāyakarma śuddham aśuddhaṃ vā? svārtham api parārtham api?' rāhula, sacet tvaṃ pratyavekṣamāṇa evaṃ jānīyāḥ: 'yad aham idaṃ kāyena karma karomi, tad idaṃ kāyakarmāśuddham, svārtham api parārtham api, akuśalam idaṃ, duḥkhodarkaṃ duḥkhavipākam iti.' rāhula, evarūpaṃ te kurvatāpi kāyakarma varjayitavyam. rāhula, sacet tvaṃ pratyavekṣamāṇa evaṃ jānīyāḥ: 'yad aham idaṃ kāyena karma karomi, tad idaṃ kāyakarma śuddham, svārtham api parārtham api, kuśalam idaṃ, sukhodarkaṃ sukhavipākam iti.' rāhula, evarūpaṃ te kurvatāpi kāyakarma sevitavyam.
rāhula, sacet tvaṃ kāyena karma kṛtavān asi, tat te kāyakarma pratyavekṣitavyam: 'yad aham idaṃ kāyena karma kṛtavān, tat kāyakarmātītaṃ niruddhaṃ vipariṇatam, kiṃ śuddham aśuddhaṃ vā? svārtham api parārtham api?' rāhula, sacet tvaṃ pratyavekṣamāṇa evaṃ jānīyāḥ: 'yad aham idaṃ kāyena karma kṛtavān, tat kāyakarmātītaṃ niruddhaṃ vipariṇatam aśuddham, svārtham api parārtham api, akuśalam idaṃ, duḥkhodarkaṃ duḥkhavipākam iti.' rāhula, tat te kāyakarma kalyāṇamitrāṇām antike sabrahmacāriṇām antike deśayitavyam ārocayitavyam uttanīkartavyam, na praticchādayitavyam, āyatyāṃ ca saṃvaraḥ samāpattavyaḥ. rāhula, sacet tvaṃ pratyavekṣamāṇa evaṃ jānīyāḥ: 'yad aham idaṃ kāyena karma kṛtavān, tat kāyakarmātītaṃ niruddhaṃ vipariṇataṃ śuddham, svārtham api parārtham api, kuśalam idaṃ, sukhodarkaṃ sukhavipākam iti.' rāhula, tenānandena pramodyena ca tvayā ahorātraṃ smṛtisaṃprajanyena vihartavyam. vākkarmaṇy apy evam eva veditavyam.
rāhula, atītān saṃskārān pratītya yat te manaskarmotpannam, tat te manaskarma pratyavekṣitavyam: 'atītān saṃskārān pratītya yan me manaskarmotpannam, tat kiṃ śuddham aśuddhaṃ vā? svārtham api parārtham api?' rāhula, sacet tvaṃ pratyavekṣamāṇa evaṃ jānīyāḥ: 'atītān saṃskārān pratītya yan me manaskarmotpannam, tad atītaṃ niruddhaṃ vipariṇatam aśuddham, svārtham api parārtham api, akuśalam idaṃ, duḥkhodarkaṃ duḥkhavipākam iti.' rāhula, tvayā tad atītaṃ manaskarma varjayitavyam. rāhula, sacet tvaṃ pratyavekṣamāṇa evaṃ jānīyāḥ: 'atītān saṃskārān pratītya yan me manaskarmotpannam, tad atītaṃ niruddhaṃ vipariṇataṃ śuddham, svārtham api parārtham api, kuśalam idaṃ, sukhodarkaṃ sukhavipākam iti.' rāhula, tvayā tad atītaṃ manaskarma sevitavyam.

rāhula, pratyutpannān saṃskārān pratītya yat te manaskarmotpadyate, tat te manaskarma pratyavekṣitavyam: 'pratyutpannān saṃskārān pratītya yan me manaskarmotpadyate, tat kiṃ śuddham aśuddhaṃ vā? svārtham api parārtham api?' rāhula, sacet tvaṃ pratyavekṣamāṇa evaṃ jānīyāḥ: 'pratyutpannān saṃskārān pratītya yan me manaskarmotpadyate, tad aśuddham, svārtham api parārtham api, akuśalam idaṃ, duḥkhodarkaṃ duḥkhavipākam iti.' rāhula, tvayā tat pratyutpannaṃ manaskarma varjayitavyam. rāhula, sacet tvaṃ pratyavekṣamāṇa evaṃ jānīyāḥ: 'pratyutpannān saṃskārān pratītya yan me manaskarmotpadyate, tac chuddham, svārtham api parārtham api, kuśalam idaṃ, sukhodarkaṃ sukhavipākam iti.' rāhula, tvayā tat pratyutpannaṃ manaskarma sevitavyam.
rāhula, ye kecid atīte 'dhvani śramaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā kāyakarma vākkarma manaskarma ca pratyavekṣya pratyavekṣya viśodhitavantaḥ, sarve te evam eva kāyakarma vākkarma manaskarma ca pratyavekṣya pratyavekṣya viśodhitavantaḥ. rāhula, ye 'pi kecid anāgate 'dhvani śramaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā kāyakarma vākkarma manaskarma ca pratyavekṣya pratyavekṣya viśodhayiṣyanti, sarve te evam eva kāyakarma vākkarma manaskarma ca pratyavekṣya pratyavekṣya viśodhayiṣyanti. rāhula, ye 'pi kecit pratyutpanne 'dhvani śramaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā kāyakarma vākkarma manaskarma ca pratyavekṣya pratyavekṣya viśodhayanti, sarve te evam eva kāyakarma vākkarma manaskarma ca pratyavekṣya pratyavekṣya viśodhayanti. rāhula, tasmāt tarhi rāhula, evaṃ te śikṣitavyam: 'kāyakarma vākkarma manaskarma ca pratyavekṣya pratyavekṣya viśodhayiṣyāmi' iti.”
atha khalu bhagavān punaḥ gāthā babhāṣe:
kāyakarma ca vākkarma, manaskarma ca rāhula.
kuśalākuśalān dharmān, pratyavekṣasva nityaśaḥ.
jānan mṛṣāvacaṃ tāta, rāhula mā sma bhāṣathāḥ.
muṇḍaḥ paropajīvī san, kathaṃ mṛṣā prabhāṣase.
avāṅmukhaṃ hi śrāmaṇyaṃ, śūnyaṃ cāsatyapūrṇakam.
yan mṛṣāvādinaḥ karma, na rakṣati mukhaṃ svakam.
tasmān naiva mṛṣā vācyaṃ, saṃbuddhasutasattama.
ayaṃ śrāmaṇyadharmo hi, rāhula śikṣyatām iha.
sarvā diśaḥ subhikṣāḥ syuḥ, kṣemā apy abhayās tathā.
rāhula prāpya tat sthānaṃ, mā kārṣīḥ parahiṃsanam.
idam avocad bhagavān. āttamanā āyuṣmān rāhulas te ca bhikṣavo bhagavato bhāṣitam abhyanandiṣuḥ.
rāhulasūktaṃ niṣṭhitaṃ caturtham.
