evaṃ mayā śrutam — ekasmin samaye bhagavān kālāpeṣu cārikāṃ caran mahatā bhikṣusaṃghena sārdhaṃ keśaputraṃ nigamam anuprāptas tatra keśaputre vyahārṣīt keśaputrasya nigamasyottarasyāṃ diśi śiṃśapāvane.
tena khalu samayena keśaputrakāḥ kālāpā aśrauṣuḥ — śramaṇaḥ khalu gautamaḥ śākyaputraḥ śākyakulāt keśaśmaśrv avatārya kāṣāyāṇi vastrāṇy acchādya śraddhayāgārād anagārikāṃ pravrajitaḥ, kālāpeṣu cārikāṃ caran mahatā bhikṣusaṃghena sārdham imaṃ keśaputraṃ nigamam anuprāptaḥ, keśaputre viharati keśaputrasya nigamasyottarasyāṃ diśi śiṃśapāvane. tasya khalu śramaṇasya gautamasya evam atyudāraḥ kalyāṇo yaśaḥśabdo 'bhyudgataḥ daśadiśo 'nusṛtaḥ — śramaṇo gautamas tathāgato 'rhan samyaksambuddho vidyācaraṇasampannaḥ sugato lokavid anuttaraḥ puruṣadamyasārathiḥ śāstā devamanuṣyāṇāṃ buddho bhagavān iti. sa imaṃ lokaṃ sadevakaṃ samārakaṃ sabrahmakaṃ saśramaṇabrāhmaṇīṃ prajāṃ sadevamanuṣyāṃ svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtvopasaṃpadya viharati. sa dharmaṃ deśayati ādau kalyāṇaṃ madhye kalyāṇaṃ paryavasāne kalyāṇaṃ svarthaṃ suvyañjanaṃ kevalaparipūrṇaṃ pariśuddhaṃ brahmacaryaṃ samprakāśayati. ye tathāgatam arhantaṃ samyaksambuddhaṃ paśyanti mānayanti vandante pūjayanti paryupāsate, te sulabdhaṃ lābhaṃ labhante. yannv eva vayam api sarve sahitāḥ upasaṃkramya śramaṇaṃ gautamaṃ paśyema satkuryāma gurukuryāma mānayema pūjayemeti.
atha khalu keśaputrakāḥ kālāpā idam aśrauṣuḥ śrutvā ca svasvakena parijanena sārdhaṃ saṃparijānānāḥ keśaputrān niṣkramyottareṇa gatvā yena śiṃśapāvanaṃ tena jagmuḥ, bhagavantaṃ draṣṭuṃ pūjituṃ ca. bhagavantam upasaṃkramya teṣāṃ kālāpānāṃ kecid bhagavatpādau śirasā vanditvā ekānte nyaṣīdan; kecid bhagavatā sārdhaṃ saṃmodya ekānte nyaṣīdan; kecid yena bhagavāṃs tenāñjaliṃ praṇamayya ekānte nyaṣīdan; kecid ārād eva bhagavantaṃ dṛṣṭvā tūṣṇīṃbhūtā nyaṣīdan. tasmin samaye kālāpeṣu sanniṣaṇṇeṣu bhagavāṃs tān dharmeṇa sandarśayām āsa samādāpayām āsa samuttejayām āsa sampraharṣayām āsa. anekaparyāyeṇa tebhyo dharmaṃ deśayitvā sandarśya samādāpya samuttejya saṃpraharṣya tūṣṇīm asthāt.
atha khalu te kālāpā bhagavatā dharmeṇa sandarśitāḥ samādāpitāḥ samuttejitāḥ sampraharṣitā svasvakād āsanād utthāyaikāṃsam uttarāsaṅgaṃ kṛtvā yena bhagavāṃs tenāñjaliṃ praṇamayya bhagavantam etad avocan — “bho gautama, eke śramaṇabrāhmaṇāḥ kālāpān āgacchanti. te svakaṃ vādaṃ svakaṃ darśanam eva rocayanti dīpayanti, paravādaṃ paradarśanaṃ ca khuṃsayanti vambhayanti. bho gautama, santi punar anye 'pi śramaṇabrāhmaṇā ye kālāpān āgacchanti, te 'pi svakaṃ vādaṃ svakaṃ darśanam eva rocayanti dīpayanti, paravādaṃ paradarśanaṃ ca khuṃsayanti vambhayanti. bho gautama, teṣām asmākaṃ tacchrutvā kāṅkṣotpadyate vimatir utpadyate — ‘eṣāṃ śramaṇabrāhmaṇānāṃ kaḥ satyam āha ko mṛṣām āha’ iti?”
bhagavān āha — “kālāpāḥ, mā yūyaṃ kāṅkṣadhvaṃ, mā yūyaṃ vicikitsadhvam. tat kasya hetoḥ? kāṅkṣāyām eva satyāṃ vicikitsotpadyate saṃśaya utpadyate. kālāpāḥ, nūnaṃ yūyaṃ svayam eva na viśuddhijñānena jānītha — asti paraloko nāsti paraloka iti. kālāpāḥ, yūyaṃ svayam eva na viśuddhijñānena jānītha — kṛtaṃ sāvadyam, kṛtam anavadyam iti. kālāpāḥ, jānīdhvaṃ karmāṇāṃ trīṇīmāni mūlāni bhavanti nidānabhūtāni. katamāni trīṇi? kālāpāḥ, lobhaḥ sarvakarmāṇāṃ hetuḥ pratyayo nidānam. kālāpāḥ, dveṣo mohaś ca sarvakarmāṇāṃ hetuḥ pratyayo nidānam. kālāpāḥ, lubdhaḥ puruṣo lobhenābhibhūto lobhena paryādattacitto 'tṛptaḥ prāṇam atipātayati, adattām ādatte, kāmeṣu mithyācaraṇaṃ carati, saṃprajānan mṛṣā bhāṣate, surāmaireyamadyapramādasthānānuyukto bhavati. kālāpāḥ, dviṣṭaḥ puruṣo dveṣeṇābhibhūto dveṣeṇa paryādattacitto 'tṛptaḥ prāṇam atipātayati, adattām ādatte, kāmeṣu mithyācaraṇaṃ carati, saṃprajānan mṛṣā bhāṣate, surāmaireyamadyapramādasthānānuyukto bhavati. kālāpāḥ, mūḍhaḥ puruṣo mohenābhibhūto mohena paryādattacitto 'tṛptaḥ prāṇam atipātayati, adattām ādatte, kāmeṣu mithyācaraṇaṃ carati, saṃprajānan mṛṣā bhāṣate, surāmaireyamadyapramādasthānānuyukto bhavati.
“kālāpāḥ, śrutavān āryaśrāvakaḥ prāṇātipātaṃ prahāya prāṇātipātāt prativirato bhavati, nihitadaṇḍo nihitaśastro lajjī dayāpannaḥ sarvaprāṇabhūtahitānukampī viharati yāvat kunthapīpīlikām upādāya, sa prāṇātipātāc cittaṃ viśodhayati. kālāpāḥ, śrutavān āryaśrāvako 'dattādānaṃ prahāyādattādānāt prativirato bhavati, dattam evādatte dattapratikāṅkṣī sadā dānarataḥ pramudito hy amatsarī na pratikāraṃ kāṅkṣamāṇaḥ, so 'dattādānāc cittaṃ viśodhayati. kālāpāḥ, śrutavān āryaśrāvako 'brahmacaryaṃ prahāyābrahmacaryāt prativirato bhavati, brahmacārī nityacārī sucaritacārī pariśuddho niraṅgaṇo maithunād grāmyadharmād vyavavṛttaḥ, so 'brahmacaryāc cittaṃ viśodhayati. kālāpāḥ, śrutavān āryaśrāvako mṛṣāvādaṃ prahāya mṛṣāvādāt prativirato bhavati, satyavādī satyasandhaḥ sthito bhāradvājo visrambhakaḥ pratyayiko 'visaṃvādako lokasya, sa mṛṣāvādāc cittaṃ viśodhayati.
“kālāpāḥ, śrutavān āryaśrāvakaḥ piśunāṃ vācaṃ prahāya piśunāyā vācaḥ prativirato bhavati, apiśunacārī na paravidbhedano, itaḥ śrutvā nāmūtrākhyātā imeṣāṃ bhedāya, amutra vā śrutvā nemeṣām ākhyātā teṣāṃ bhedāya, bhinnānāṃ vā sandhātā sahitānāṃ vā sandhāne pramuditaḥ, na vargakaraṇīṃ vācaṃ bhāṣitā, na vargarataḥ, na vargastāvī, sa piśunāyā vācaś cittaṃ viśodhayati. kālāpāḥ, śrutavān āryaśrāvakaḥ pāruṣyāṃ vācaṃ prahāya pāruṣyāyā vācaḥ prativirato bhavati. yā sā vāg aṇḍakā karkaśā kaṭukā asvīkāryā karṇakaṭukā janāparijñātā janāmanāpā parasaṃtāpanī asamādhisaṃvartanikā, tathārūpāṃ vācaṃ varjayati. yā sā vāg valgū snigdhā karṇasukhā premīyā hṛdayaṅgamā paurī bahujanakāntā bahujanamanāpā parāśvāsikā vispaṣṭā anabhīṣaṇā samādhisaṃvartanikā, tathārūpāṃ vācaṃ bhāṣate. sa pāruṣyāyā vācaś cittaṃ viśodhayati. kālāpāḥ, śrutavān āryaśrāvakaḥ sambhinnapralāpaṃ prahāya sambhinnapralāpāt prativirato bhavati. kālavādī bhūtavādī dharmavādī arthavādī vinayavādī ca bhavati, vinayavāde rataḥ, kālena sāpadesāṃ paryantavatīṃ arthasaṃhitāṃ vācaṃ bhāṣate, sādhu anuśāsti sādhu ca vārayati. sa sambhinnapralāpāc cittaṃ viśodhayati. kālāpāḥ, śrutavān āryaśrāvako 'bhidhyāṃ prahāyābhidhyāyāḥ prativirato bhavati, avivādamānasaḥ, yat parasyānyaśvaittakaṃ vittopakaraṇaṃ taj jīvitopaskaraṃ vā tad abhidhyāyan na prārthayate — aho bata yat parasya tat mama syād iti. so 'bhidhyāyāś cittaṃ viśodhayati.
“kālāpāḥ, śrutavān āryaśrāvako vyāpādaṃ prahāya vyāpādāt prativirato bhavati, lajjī dayāpannaḥ sarvaprāṇabhūtahitānukampī viharati yāvat kunthapīpīlikām upādāya, sa īrṣyāvyāpādāc cittaṃ viśodhayati. kālāpāḥ, śrutavān āryaśrāvako mithyādṛṣṭiṃ prahāya mithyādṛṣṭeḥ prativirato bhavati, samyagdṛṣṭyā carati aviparītayā, evaṃdṛṣṭir bhavaty evaṃvādī — asti dattam asti hutam asty iṣṭam, asti sukṛtaduṣkṛtānāṃ karmaṇāṃ phalaṃ vipākaḥ, asty ayaṃ loko 'sti paralokaḥ, asti mātā asti pitā, santi loke śramaṇabrāhmaṇāḥ samyaggatāḥ samyakpratipannāḥ, ye imaṃ ca lokaṃ paraṃ ca lokaṃ svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtvopasaṃpadya viharantīti. sa mithyādṛṣṭeś cittaṃ viśodhayati.
“evaṃ hi kālāpāḥ, śrutavān āryaśrāvakaḥ kāyaviśuddhikarmaṇā samannāgato bhavati, vāgmanoviśuddhikarmaṇā samannāgato bhavati, vyāpādaṃ vivādaṃ ca prahāya, styānamiddhaṃ prahāya, anuddhato nirabhimānaḥ, vicikitsāṃ prahāya mānaṃ ca tīrtvā, smṛtimān samprajānan asammūḍhaḥ, maitrāsahagatena cetasā ekāṃ diśaṃ spharitvopasaṃpadya viharati. tathā dvitīyāṃ tathā tṛtīyāṃ tathā caturthīṃ diśam, ūrdhvam adhas tiryak sarvataḥ sarvatratayā, maitrāsahagatena cetasā averena asapatnena avyābādhena avivādena vipulena mahadgatena apramāṇena subhāvitena sarvaṃ lokaṃ spharitvopasaṃpadya viharati. evaṃ karuṇāmuditopekṣāsahagatena cetasā averena asapatnena avyābādhena avivādena vipulena mahadgatena apramāṇena subhāvitena sarvaṃ lokaṃ spharitvopasaṃpadya viharati.
“evaṃ hi kālāpāḥ, śrutavān āryaśrāvako 'vairacitto 'sapatnacitto 'vyābādhacitto 'vivādacittaś catvāry āśvāsasthānāni pratilabhate. katamāni catvāri? yady asty ayaṃ loko 'sti paralokaḥ, asti sukṛtaduṣkṛtānāṃ karmaṇāṃ phalaṃ vipākaḥ, mayā cedaṃ samyagdṛṣṭisampannaṃ karma pratilabdhaṃ samāttaṃ paripūrṇaṃ ca, so 'haṃ kāyasya bhedāt prāṇātyayāt sugatau svargaloka upapatsyeyam. evaṃ hi kālāpāḥ, śrutavān āryaśrāvako 'vairacitto 'sapatnacitto 'vyābādhacitto 'vivādacitto idam prathamam āśvāsasthānaṃ pratilabhate. punar aparaṃ kālāpāḥ, yadi nāsty ayaṃ loko nāsti paralokaḥ, nāsti sukṛtaduṣkṛtānāṃ karmaṇāṃ phalaṃ vipākaḥ, tathāpy ahaṃ dṛṣṭa eva dharme nānena kāraṇenānyair nindyo bhavāmi, api tu vijñaiḥ praśasyaḥ, vīryavantaḥ samyagdṛṣṭikā etasyāstitvaṃ vadantīti. evaṃ hi kālāpāḥ, śrutavān āryaśrāvako 'vairacitto 'sapatnacitto 'vyābādhacitto 'vivādacitta idaṃ dvitīyam āśvāsasthānaṃ pratilabhate. punar aparaṃ kālāpāḥ, yadi karma kurvāṇena pāpaṃ na kriyate, tathāpy ahaṃ pāpaṃ na cintayāmi. tat kasya hetoḥ? svayam eva pāpam akurvataḥ kuto duḥkham utpatsyate? evaṃ hi kālāpāḥ, śrutavān āryaśrāvako 'vairacitto 'sapatnacitto 'vyābādhacitto 'vivādacitta idaṃ tṛtīyam āśvāsasthānaṃ pratilabhate. punar aparaṃ kālāpāḥ, yadi karma kurvāṇena pāpaṃ na kriyate, loke bhayaṃ vā abhayaṃ vā nāparādhyāmi, nityam ahaṃ sarvalokānukampī, mama cittaṃ na sattvaiḥ sārdhaṃ vivadati, anāvilaṃ ca pramuditaṃ ceti. evaṃ hi kālāpāḥ, śrutavān āryaśrāvako 'vairacitto 'sapatnacitto 'vyābādhacitto 'vivādacitta idaṃ caturtham āśvāsasthānaṃ pratilabhate. evaṃ hi kālāpāḥ, śrutavān āryaśrāvako 'vairacitto 'sapatnacitto 'vyābādhacitto 'vivādacitta imāni catvāry āśvāsasthānāni pratilabhate.”

bho gautama, ājñātaṃ mayā, sugata, abhijñātaṃ mayā. bhagavan, vayam ime sarve bhagavantaṃ śaraṇaṃ gacchāmo dharmaṃ ca bhikṣusaṃghaṃ ca. upāsakān asmān bhagavān dhārayatv adyāgreṇāñjalipraṇetān yāvajjīvaṃ śaraṇaṃ gatān.”
idam avocad bhagavān. te sarve kālāpā bhikṣavaś ca bhagavato bhāṣitam abhyanandan.
kālāpasūktaṃ niṣṭhitaṃ ṣaṣṭham.
