tena khalu punaḥ samayena āyuṣmān maulikaphālgunaḥ bhikṣuṇībhiḥ sārdham ativelaṃ saṃsṛṣṭaḥ viharati sma . evaṃ saṃsṛṣṭaḥ āyuṣmān maulikaphālgunaḥ bhikṣuṇībhiḥ sārdhaṃ viharati sma — sacet kaścit bhikṣuḥ āyuṣmataḥ maulikaphālgunasya saṃmukhaṃ tāsāṃ bhikṣuṇīnām avarṇaṃ bhāṣate, tena āyuṣmān maulikaphālgunaḥ kupitaḥ anāttamanāḥ adhikaraṇam api karoti . sacet punaḥ kaścit bhikṣuḥ tāsāṃ bhikṣuṇīnāṃ saṃmukham āyuṣmataḥ maulikaphālgunasya avarṇaṃ bhāṣate, tena tāḥ bhikṣuṇyaḥ kupitāḥ anāttamanasaḥ adhikaraṇam api kurvanti . evaṃ saṃsṛṣṭaḥ āyuṣmān maulikaphālgunaḥ bhikṣuṇībhiḥ sārdhaṃ viharati sma .

ārādhayan bata me, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣavaḥ ekaṃ samayaṃ cittam . iha aham, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣūn āmantraye — ahaṃ khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, ekāsanabhojanaṃ bhuñje . ekāsanabhojanaṃ khalu aham, bhikṣavaḥ, bhuñjānaḥ alpābādhataṃ ca saṃjānāmi alpātaṅkataṃ ca laghutthānaṃ ca balaṃ ca sparśavihāraṃ ca . eta yūyam api, bhikṣavaḥ, ekāsanabhojanaṃ bhuṅgdhvam . ekāsanabhojanaṃ khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, yūyam api bhuñjānāḥ alpābādhataṃ ca saṃjñāsyatha alpātaṅkataṃ ca laghutthānaṃ ca balaṃ ca sparśavihāraṃ ca iti . na me, bhikṣavaḥ, teṣu bhikṣuṣu anuśāsanī karaṇīyā abhūt ; smṛtyutpādakaraṇīyam eva me, bhikṣavaḥ, teṣu bhikṣuṣu abhūt .
tadyathā api, bhikṣavaḥ, subhūmau caturmahāpathe ājāneyarathaḥ yuktaḥ syāt sthitaḥ adhastapratodaḥ . tam enaṃ dakṣaḥ yogyācāryaḥ aśvadamyasārathiḥ abhiruhya, vāmena hastena raśmī gṛhītvā, dakṣiṇena hastena pratodaṃ gṛhītvā, yathecchaṃ sārayet api pratyāsārayet api .
evam eva khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, na me teṣu bhikṣuṣu anuśāsanī karaṇīyā abhūt, smṛtyutpādakaraṇīyam eva me, bhikṣavaḥ, teṣu bhikṣuṣu abhūt . tasmāt iha, bhikṣavaḥ, yūyam api akuśalaṃ prajahīta, kuśaleṣu dharmeṣu āyogaṃ kuruta . evam hi yūyam api asmin dharmavinaye vṛddhiṃ virūḍhiṃ vaipulyam āpatsyatha .
tadyathā api, bhikṣavaḥ, grāmasya vā nigamasya vā avidūre mahat śālavanam . tat ca syāt eraṇḍaiḥ saṃchannam . tasya kaścit eva puruṣaḥ utpadyeta arthakāmaḥ hitakāmaḥ yogakṣemakāmaḥ . saḥ yāḥ tāḥ śālayaṣṭayaḥ kuṭilāḥ ojopaharaṇyaḥ tāḥ chittvā bahirdhā nirharet, antarvanaṃ suviśodhitaṃ viśodhayet . yāḥ punaḥ tāḥ śālayaṣṭayaḥ ṛjukāḥ sujātāḥ tāḥ samyak pariharet . evam hi etat, bhikṣavaḥ, śālavanam apareṇa samayena vṛddhiṃ virūḍhiṃ vaipulyam āpadyeta .
evam eva khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, yūyam api akuśalaṃ prajahīta, kuśaleṣu dharmeṣu āyogaṃ kuruta . evam hi yūyam api asmin dharmavinaye vṛddhiṃ virūḍhiṃ vaipulyam āpatsyatha .
bhūtapūrvam, bhikṣavaḥ, asyām eva śrāvastyāṃ vaidehikā nāma gṛhapatnī abhūt . vaidehikāyāḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, gṛhapatnyāḥ evaṃ kalyāṇaḥ kīrtiśabdaḥ abhyudgataḥ — sūratā vaidehikā gṛhapatnī, nivātā vaidehikā gṛhapatnī, upaśāntā vaidehikā gṛhapatnī iti . vaidehikāyāḥ khalu punaḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, gṛhapatnyāḥ kālī nāma dāsī abhūt dakṣā analasā susaṃvihitakarmāntā .
atha khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, kālyāḥ dāsyāḥ etad abhūt — mahyam khalu āryāyāḥ evaṃ kalyāṇaḥ kīrtiśabdaḥ abhyudgataḥ — sūratā vaidehikā gṛhapatnī, nivātā vaidehikā gṛhapatnī, upaśāntā vaidehikā gṛhapatnī iti . kim nu khalu me āryā santam eva nu khalu adhyātmaṃ kopaṃ na prāduṣkaroti utāho asantam, utāho mahyam eva ete karmāntāḥ susaṃvihitāḥ yena me āryā santam eva adhyātmaṃ kopaṃ na prāduṣkaroti, no asantam ? yat nūnam aham āryāṃ mīmāṃseyam iti .
atha khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, kālī dāsī divā udatiṣṭhat . atha khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, vaidehikā gṛhapatnī kālīṃ dāsīm etad avocat — he je kāli iti .

atha khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, kālī dāsī bhinnena śirasā lohitena galatā prātiveśyebhyaḥ ujjhāpayām āsa — paśyata āryāḥ, sūratāyāḥ karma ; paśyata āryāḥ, nivātāyāḥ karma, paśyata āryāḥ, upaśāntāyāḥ karma . katham hi nāma ekadāsyai divā udatiṣṭham iti kupitā anāttamanāḥ argalasūciṃ gṛhītvā śirasi prahāraṃ dāsyati, śiraḥ vibhetsyati iti .
atha khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, vaidehikāyāḥ gṛhapatnyāḥ apareṇa samayena evaṃ pāpakaḥ kīrtiśabdaḥ abhyudgacchat — caṇḍī vaidehikā gṛhapatnī, anivātā vaidehikā gṛhapatnī, anupaśāntā vaidehikā gṛhapatnī iti .
evam eva khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, iha kaścit bhikṣuḥ tāvat eva sūratasūrataḥ bhavati nivātanivātaḥ bhavati upaśāntopaśāntaḥ bhavati yāvat na amanojñāḥ vacanapathāḥ spṛśanti . yataḥ ca, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣum amanojñāḥ vacanapathāḥ spṛśanti, atha bhikṣuḥ sūrataḥ iti veditavyaḥ, nivātaḥ iti veditavyaḥ, upaśāntaḥ iti veditavyaḥ . na ahaṃ tam, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuṃ suvacāḥ iti vadāmi yaḥ cīvarapiṇḍapātaśayanāsanaglānapratyayabhaiṣajyapariṣkārahetoḥ suvacāḥ bhavati, sauvacasyatām āpadyate . tat kasya hetoḥ ? tat hi saḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ cīvarapiṇḍapātaśayanāsanaglānapratyayabhaiṣajyapariṣkāram alabhamānaḥ na suvacāḥ bhavati, na sauvacasyatām āpadyate . yaḥ ca khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ dharmam eva satkurvan, dharmaṃ gurukurvan, dharmaṃ mānayan, dharmaṃ pūjayan, dharmam apacāyamānaḥ suvacāḥ bhavati, sauvacasyatām āpadyate, tam ahaṃ suvacāḥ iti vadāmi . tasmāt iha, bhikṣavaḥ, dharmam eva satkurvantaḥ, dharmaṃ gurukurvantaḥ, dharmaṃ mānayantaḥ, dharmaṃ pūjayantaḥ, dharmam apacāyamānāḥ suvacasaḥ bhaviṣyāmaḥ, sauvacasyatām āpatsyāmahe iti . evam hi vaḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, śikṣitavyam .

tadyathā api, bhikṣavaḥ, puruṣaḥ āgacchet kuddālapiṭakam ādāya . saḥ evaṃ vadet — aham imāṃ mahāpṛthivīm apṛthivīṃ kariṣyāmi iti . saḥ tatra tatra vikhanet, tatra tatra vikiret, tatra tatra niṣṭhīvet, tatra tatra avamūtrayet — apṛthivī bhavasi, apṛthivī bhavasi iti .
tat kiṃ manyadhve, bhikṣavaḥ, api nu saḥ puruṣaḥ imāṃ mahāpṛthivīm apṛthivīṃ kuryāt iti ?
no etat, bhadanta . tat kasya hetoḥ ? iyam hi, bhadanta, mahāpṛthivī gambhīrā aprameyā . sā na sukarā apṛthivī kartum ; yāvat eva ca punaḥ saḥ puruṣaḥ klamasya vighātasya bhāgī syāt iti .

tadyathā api, bhikṣavaḥ, puruṣaḥ āgacchet lākṣāṃ vā haridrāṃ vā nīlaṃ vā māñjiṣṭhaṃ vā ādāya . saḥ evaṃ vadet — aham asmin ākāśe rūpaṃ likhiṣyāmi, rūpaprādurbhāvaṃ kariṣyāmi iti .
tat kiṃ manyadhve, bhikṣavaḥ, api nu saḥ puruṣaḥ asmin ākāśe rūpaṃ likhet, rūpaprādurbhāvaṃ kuryāt iti ?
no etat, bhadanta . tat kasya hetoḥ ? ayam hi, bhadanta, ākāśaḥ arūpī anidarśanaḥ . tatra na sukaraṃ rūpaṃ likhitum, rūpaprādurbhāvaṃ kartum ; yāvat eva ca punaḥ saḥ puruṣaḥ klamasya vighātasya bhāgī syāt iti .

tat kiṃ manyadhve, bhikṣavaḥ, api nu saḥ puruṣaḥ ādīptayā tṛṇolkayā gaṅgāṃ nadīṃ saṃtāpayet saṃparitāpayet iti ?
no etat, bhadanta . tat kasya hetoḥ ? gaṅgā hi, bhadanta, nadī gambhīrā aprameyā . sā na sukarā ādīptayā tṛṇolkayā saṃtāpayituṃ saṃparitāpayitum ; yāvat eva ca punaḥ saḥ puruṣaḥ klamasya vighātasya bhāgī syāt iti .
evam eva khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, pañca ime vacanapathāḥ yaiḥ vaḥ pare vadamānāḥ vadeyuḥ kālena vā akālena vā … tadālambanaṃ ca sarvāvantaṃ lokaṃ gaṅgāsamena cetasā vipulena mahāgatena apramāṇena avaireṇa avyābādhena sphārayitvā vihariṣyāmaḥ iti . evam hi vaḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, śikṣitavyam .
tadyathā api, bhikṣavaḥ, biḍālabhastrā mṛditā sumṛditā suparimṛditā, mṛdukā tūlinī chinnasarsarā chinnamarmarā . atha puruṣaḥ āgacchet kāṣṭhaṃ vā kapālaṃ vā ādāya . saḥ evaṃ vadet — aham imāṃ biḍālabhastrāṃ mṛditāṃ sumṛditāṃ suparimṛditām, mṛdukāṃ tūlinīm, chinnasarsarāṃ chinnamarmarāṃ kāṣṭhena vā sikatayā vā sarsaraṃ kariṣyāmi marmaraṃ kariṣyāmi iti .
tat kiṃ manyadhve, bhikṣavaḥ, api nu saḥ puruṣaḥ amūṃ biḍālabhastrāṃ mṛditāṃ sumṛditāṃ suparimṛditām, mṛdukāṃ tūlinīm, chinnasarsarāṃ chinnamarmarāṃ kāṣṭhena vā sikatayā vā sarsaraṃ kuryāt, marmaraṃ kuryāt iti ?
no etat, bhadanta . tat kasya hetoḥ ? amū hi, bhadanta, biḍālabhastrā mṛditā sumṛditā suparimṛditā, mṛdukā tūlinī, chinnasarsarā chinnamarmarā . sā na sukarā kāṣṭhena vā sikatayā vā sarsaraṃ kartuṃ marmaraṃ kartum ; yāvat eva ca punaḥ saḥ puruṣaḥ klamasya vighātasya bhāgī syāt iti .

ubhayatodaṇḍakena cet api, bhikṣavaḥ, krakacena corāḥ adhaścarāḥ aṅgapratyaṅgāni avakṛnteyuḥ, tatra api yaḥ manaḥ pradūṣayet, na me saḥ tena śāsanakaraḥ . tatra api vaḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, evaṃ śikṣitavyam — na ca eva naḥ cittaṃ vipariṇataṃ bhaviṣyati, na ca pāpikāṃ vācaṃ niścārayiṣyāmaḥ, hitānukampinaḥ ca vihariṣyāmaḥ maitracittāḥ na doṣāntarāḥ . taṃ ca pudgalaṃ maitrīsahagatena cetasā sphārayitvā vihariṣyāmaḥ tadālambanaṃ ca sarvāvantaṃ lokaṃ maitrīsahagatena cetasā vipulena mahāgatena apramāṇena avaireṇa avyābādhena sphārayitvā vihariṣyāmaḥ iti . evam hi vaḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, śikṣitavyam .
imam ca yūyam, bhikṣavaḥ, krakacopamam avavādam abhīkṣṇaṃ manasi kuryāta . paśyatha nu yūyam, bhikṣavaḥ, taṃ vacanapatham, aṇuṃ vā sthūlaṃ vā, yaṃ yūyaṃ na adhivāsayeta iti ?

tasmāt iha, bhikṣavaḥ, imaṃ krakacopamam avavādam abhīkṣṇaṃ manasi kuruta . tat vaḥ bhaviṣyati dīrgharātraṃ hitāya sukhāya iti .
idam avocat bhagavān . āttamanasaḥ te bhikṣavaḥ bhagavataḥ bhāṣitam abhyanandiṣuḥ .
