madhyamanikāyaḥ 26 - pāśarāśisūtram

evaṃ mayā śrutam — ekasmin samaye bhagavān śrāvastyāṃ viharati sma jetavane anāthapiṇḍadasya ārāme .

atha khalu bhagavān pūrvāhṇasamaye paridhāya pātracīvaram ādāya śrāvastīṃ piṇḍāya prāvikṣat . atha khalu saṃbahulāḥ bhikṣavaḥ āyuṣmantam ānandam upasaṃcakramuḥ ; upasaṃkramya āyuṣmantam ānandam etad avocan — ciraśrutā naḥ, āyuṣman ānanda, bhagavataḥ saṃmukhāt dhārmī kathā . sādhu vayam, āyuṣman ānanda, labhemahi bhagavataḥ saṃmukhāt dhārmīṃ kathāṃ śravaṇāya iti .

tena hi āyuṣmantaḥ ramyakasya brāhmaṇasya āśramam upasaṃkramata ; api eva nāma labhedhvaṃ bhagavataḥ saṃmukhāt dharmīṃ kathāṃ śravaṇāya iti .

evam āyuṣman iti khalu te bhikṣavaḥ āyuṣmataḥ ānandasya pratyaśrauṣuḥ .

atha khalu bhagavān śrāvastyāṃ piṇḍāya caritvā paścādbhaktaṃ piṇḍapātāt pratikrāntaḥ āyuṣmantam ānandam āmantrayata — āyāhi ānanda, pūrvārāme mṛgāramātuḥ prāsādam upasaṃkramiṣyāvaḥ divāvihārāya iti .

evam bhadanta iti khalu āyuṣmān ānandaḥ bhagavataḥ pratyaśrauṣīt . atha khalu bhagavān āyuṣmatā ānandena sārdhaṃ pūrvārāme mṛgāramātuḥ prāsādam upasaṃcakrāma divāvihārāya . atha khalu bhagavān sāyāhnasamaye pratisaṃlayanāt utthitaḥ āyuṣmantam ānandam āmantrayata — āyāhi ānanda, pūrvakoṣṭhakam upasaṃkramiṣyāvaḥ gātrāṇi pariṣiñcitum iti .

atha khalu bhagavān āyuṣmatā ānandena sārdhaṃ pūrvakoṣṭhakam upasaṃcakrāma gātrāṇi pariṣiñcitum . pūrvakoṣṭhake gātrāṇi pariṣiñcitvā pratyuttīrya ekacīvaraḥ asthāt gātrāṇi pūrvāpayamānaḥ . atha khalu āyuṣmān ānandaḥ bhagavantam etad avocat — ayam, bhadanta, ramyakasya brāhmaṇasya āśramaḥ avidūre . ramaṇīyaḥ, bhadanta, ramyakasya brāhmaṇasya āśramaḥ ; prāsādikaḥ, bhadanta, ramyakasya brāhmaṇasya āśramaḥ . sādhu, bhadanta, bhagavān ramyakasya brāhmaṇasya āśramam upasaṃkramatu anukampām upādāya iti . adhyavāsayat bhagavān tūṣṇīṃbhāvena .

atha khalu bhagavān ramyakasya brāhmaṇasya āśramam upasaṃcakrāma . tena khalu punaḥ samayena saṃbahulāḥ bhikṣavaḥ ramyakasya brāhmaṇasya āśrame dharmyām kathāyām saṃniṣaṇṇāḥ bhavanti . atha khalu bhagavān bahirdvārakoṣṭhake asthāt kathāparyavasānam āgamayamānaḥ . atha khalu bhagavān kathāparyavasānaṃ viditvā utkāśya argalam ākoṭayām āsa . vyavaruḥ khalu te bhikṣavaḥ bhagavataḥ dvāram . atha khalu bhagavān ramyakasya brāhmaṇasya āśramaṃ praviśya prajñapte āsane nyaṣīdat . niṣadya khalu bhagavān bhikṣūn āmantrayata — kayā nu stha, bhikṣavaḥ, etarhi kathayā saṃniṣaṇṇāḥ ? kā ca punaḥ vaḥ antarākathā viprakṛtā iti ?

bhagavantam eva khalu naḥ, bhadanta, ārabhya dharmī kathā viprakṛtā, atha bhagavān anuprāptaḥ iti .

sādhu, bhikṣavaḥ . etat khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, yuṣmākaṃ pratirūpaṃ kulaputrāṇāṃ śraddhayā agārāt anagārikāṃ pravrajitānāṃ yad yūyaṃ dharmyām kathāyām saṃniṣīdeta . saṃnipatitānāṃ vaḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, dvayaṃ karaṇīyam — dharmī vā kathā, āryaḥ vā tūṣṇīṃbhāvaḥ .

dve ime, bhikṣavaḥ, paryeṣaṇe — āryā ca paryeṣaṇā, anāryā ca paryeṣaṇā .

kiṃ ca, bhikṣavaḥ, vyādhidharmaṃ vadatha ? putrabhāryam, bhikṣavaḥ, vyādhidharmam, dāsīdāsaṃ vyādhidharmam, ajaiḍakaṃ vyādhidharmam, kukkuṭasūkaraṃ vyādhidharmam, hastigavāśvabaḍavaṃ vyādhidharmam . vyādhidharmāḥ hi ete, bhikṣavaḥ, upadhayaḥ . atra ayaṃ grathitaḥ mūrcchitaḥ adhyāpannaḥ ātmanā vyādhidharmā samānaḥ vyādhidharmam eva paryeṣate .

saḥ khalu aham, bhikṣavaḥ, apareṇa samayena daharaḥ eva samānaḥ suśuklakeśaḥ, bhadreṇa yauvanena samanvitaḥ prathamena vayasā akāmakānāṃ mātāpitṝṇām aśrumukhānāṃ rudatāṃ keśaśmaśru avahārya kāṣāyāṇi vastrāṇi ācchādya agārāt anagārikāṃ prāvrājam .

saḥ evaṃ pravrajitaḥ samānaḥ kiṃkuśalagaveṣī anuttaraṃ śāntivarapadaṃ paryeṣamāṇaḥ ārāḍam kālāpam upasaṃcakrama ; upasaṃkramya ārāḍam kālāpam etad avocam — icchāmi aham, āyuṣman kālāpa, asmin dharmavinaye brahmacaryaṃ caritum iti .

evam ukte, bhikṣavaḥ, ārāḍaḥ kālāpaḥ mām etad avocat — viharatu āyuṣmān ; tādṛśaḥ ayaṃ dharmaḥ yatra vijñaḥ puruṣaḥ na cirāt eva svakam ācāryakaṃ svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtya upasaṃpadya viharet iti .

saḥ khalu aham, bhikṣavaḥ, na cirāt eva kṣipram eva taṃ dharmaṃ paryāpnuvam . saḥ khalu aham, bhikṣavaḥ, tāvatakena eva oṣṭhābhihatamātreṇa lapitapralāpitamātreṇa jñānavādaṃ ca vadāmi sthaviravādaṃ ca, jānāmi paśyāmi iti ca pratijānāmi aham ca eva anye ca .

tasya mama, bhikṣavaḥ, etad abhūt — na khalu ārāḍaḥ kālāpaḥ imaṃ dharmaṃ kevalaṃ śraddhāmātrakana svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtya upasaṃpadya viharāmi iti pravedayati ; addhā ārāḍaḥ kālāpaḥ imaṃ dharmaṃ jānan paśyan viharati iti .

atha khalu aham, bhikṣavaḥ, ārāḍam kālāpam upasaṃcakrama ; upasaṃkramya ārāḍaṃ kālāpam etad avocam — kiyatā nu, āyuṣman kālāpa, imaṃ dharmaṃ svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtya upasaṃpadya viharāmi iti pravedayasi iti ? evam ukte, bhikṣavaḥ, ārāḍaḥ kālāpaḥ ākiṃcanyāyatanaṃ pravedayām āsa .

tasya mama, bhikṣavaḥ, etad abhūt — na khalu ārāḍasya eva kālāpasya asti śraddhā, mama api asti śraddhā ; na khalu ārāḍasya eva kālāpasya asti vīryam, mama api asti vīryam ; na khalu ārāḍasya eva kālāpasya asti smṛtiḥ, mama api asti smṛtiḥ ; na khalu ārāḍasya eva kālāpasya asti samādhiḥ, mama api asti samādhiḥ ; na khalu ārāḍasya eva kālāpasya asti prajñā, mama api asti prajñā . yan nu ahaṃ yaṃ dharmaṃ ārāḍaḥ kālāpaḥ svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtya upasaṃpadya viharāmi iti pravedayati, tasya dharmasya sākṣātkriyāyai pradaDhyām iti . saḥ khalu aham, bhikṣavaḥ, na cirasya eva kṣipram eva taṃ dharmaṃ svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtya upasaṃpadya vyahārṣam .

atha khalu aham, bhikṣavaḥ, ārāḍam kālāpam upasaṃcakrama ; upasaṃkramya ārāḍaṃ kālāpam etad avocam — etāvatā nu, āyuṣman kālāpa, imaṃ dharmaṃ svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtya upasaṃpadya pravedayasi iti ?

etāvatā khalu aham, āyuṣman, imaṃ dharmaṃ svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtya upasaṃpadya pravedayāmi iti .

aham api khalu, āyuṣman, etāvatā imaṃ dharmaṃ svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtya upasaṃpadya viharāmi iti .

lābhāḥ naḥ, āyuṣman, sulabdhaṃ naḥ, āyuṣman, ye vayam āyuṣmantaṃ tādṛśaṃ sabrahmacāriṇaṃ paśyāmaḥ . iti yaṃ dharmaṃ svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtya upasaṃpadya pravedayāmi taṃ tvaṃ dharmaṃ svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtya upasaṃpadya viharasi . yaṃ tvaṃ dharmaṃ svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtya upasaṃpadya viharasi tam ahaṃ dharmaṃ svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtya upasaṃpadya pravedayāmi . iti yaṃ dharmaṃ aham jānāmi taṃ tvaṃ dharmaṃ jānāsi, yaṃ tvaṃ dharmaṃ jānāsi tam ahaṃ dharmaṃ jānāmi . iti yādṛśaḥ ahaṃ tādṛśaḥ tvam, yādṛśaḥ tvaṃ tādṛśaḥ aham . ehi idānīm, āyuṣman, ubhau eva santau imaṃ gaṇaṃ pariharāva iti .

iti khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, ārāḍaḥ kālāpaḥ ācāryaḥ me samānaḥ ātmanaḥ antevāsinaṃ māṃ samānam ātmanā samasamaṃ sthāpayām āsa, udārayā ca māṃ pūjayā pūjayām āsa .

tasya mama, bhikṣavaḥ, etad abhūt — na ayaṃ dharmaḥ nirvedāya na virāgāya na nirodhāya na upaśamāya na abhijñāyai na saṃbodhāya na nirvāṇāya saṃvartate, yāvat eva ākiṃcanyāyatanopapattaye iti . saḥ khalu aham, bhikṣavaḥ, taṃ dharmaṃ analaṃkṛtya tasmāt dharmāt nirvidya prākrāmam .

saḥ khalu aham, bhikṣavaḥ, kiṃkuśalagaveṣī anuttaraṃ śāntivarapadaṃ paryeṣamāṇaḥ udrakaṃ rāmaputram upasaṃcakrama ; upasaṃkramya udrakaṃ rāmaputram etad avocam — icchāmi aham, āyuṣman, asmin dharmavinaye brahmacaryaṃ caritum iti .

evam ukte, bhikṣavaḥ, udrakaḥ rāmaputraḥ mām etad avocat — viharatu āyuṣmān ; tādṛśaḥ ayaṃ dharmaḥ yatra vijñuḥ puruṣaḥ na cirasya eva svakam ācāryakaṃ svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtya upasaṃpadya viharet iti .

saḥ khalu aham, bhikṣavaḥ, na cirasya eva kṣipram eva taṃ dharmaṃ paryāpnuvam . saḥ khalu aham, bhikṣavaḥ, tāvatakena eva oṣṭhābhihatamātreṇa lapitapralāpitamātreṇa jñānavādaṃ ca vadāmi sthaviravādaṃ ca, jānāmi paśyāmi iti ca pratijānāmi aham ca eva anye ca .

tasya mama, bhikṣavaḥ, etad abhūt — na khalu rāmaḥ imaṃ dharmaṃ kevalaṃ śraddhāmātrakana svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtya upasaṃpadya viharāmi iti prāvedayat ; addhā rāmaḥ imaṃ dharmaṃ jānan paśyan vyahārṣīt iti .

atha khalu aham, bhikṣavaḥ, udrakaṃ rāmaputram upasaṃcakrama ; upasaṃkramya udrakaṃ rāmaputram etad avocam — kiyatā nu, āyuṣman, rāmaḥ imaṃ dharmaṃ svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtya upasaṃpadya viharāmi iti prāvedayat iti ?

evam ukte, bhikṣavaḥ, udrakaḥ rāmaputraḥ naivasaṃjñānāsaṃjñāyatanaṃ pravedayām āsa .

tasya mama, bhikṣavaḥ, etad abhūt — na khalu rāmasya eva abhūt śraddhā, mama api asti śraddhā ; na khalu rāmasya eva abhūt vīryam, mama api asti vīryam ; na khalu rāmasya eva abhūt smṛtiḥ, mama api asti smṛtiḥ ; na khalu rāmasya eva abhūt samādhiḥ, mama api asti samādhiḥ, na khalu rāmasya eva abhūt prajñā, mama api asti prajñā . yan nu ahaṃ yaṃ dharmaṃ rāmaḥ svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtya upasaṃpadya viharāmi iti prāvedayat, tasya dharmasya sākṣātkriyāyai pradaDhyām iti . saḥ khalu aham, bhikṣavaḥ, na cirasya eva kṣipram eva taṃ dharmaṃ svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtya upasaṃpadya vyahārṣam .

iti khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, udrakaḥ rāmaputraḥ sabrahmacārī me samānaḥ ācāryasthāne māṃ sthāpayām āsa, udārayā ca māṃ pūjayā pūjayām āsa .

tasya mama, bhikṣavaḥ, etad abhūt — na ayaṃ dharmaḥ nirvedāya na virāgāya na nirodhāya na upaśamāya na abhijñāyai na saṃbodhāya na nirvāṇāya saṃvartate, yāvat eva naivasaṃjñānāsaṃjñāyatanopapattaye iti . saḥ khalu aham, bhikṣavaḥ, taṃ dharmaṃ analaṃkṛtya tasmāt dharmāt nirvidya prākrāmam .

saḥ khalu aham, bhikṣavaḥ, kiṃkuśalagaveṣī anuttaraṃ śāntivarapadaṃ paryeṣamāṇaḥ magadheṣu anupūrveṇa cārikāṃ caran urubilvāṃ senānigamam abhyavāsaram . tatra adrākṣam ramaṇīyaṃ bhūmibhāgam, prāsādikaṃ ca vanakhaṇḍam, nadīṃ ca syandamānāṃ śvetakāṃ supratīrthāṃ ramaṇīyām, samantāt ca gocaragrāmam .

tasya mama, bhikṣavaḥ, etad abhūt — adhigataḥ khalu me ayaṃ dharmaḥ gambhīraḥ durdarśaḥ duranubodhaḥ śāntaḥ praṇītaḥ atarkāvacaraḥ nipuṇaḥ paṇḍitavedanīyaḥ . ālayārāmā khalu punar iyaṃ prajā ālayaratā ālayasaṃmuditā . ālayārāmāyai khalu punaḥ prajāyai ālayaratāyai ālayasaṃmuditāyai dudarśam idaṃ sthānaṃ yad idam — idapratyayatā pratītyasamutpādaḥ . idam api khalu sthānaṃ dudarśaṃ yad idam — sarvasaṃskāraśamathaḥ sarvopadhipratiniḥsargaḥ tṛṣṇākṣayaḥ virāgaḥ nirodhaḥ nirvāṇam . aham ca eva khalu punaḥ dharmaṃ deśayeyam, pare ca me na ājānīyuḥ, saḥ mama syāt klamathaḥ, sā mama syāt viheṣā iti .

kṛcchreṇa mayā adhigatam,
halaṃ idānīṃ prakāśitum ;
rāgadveṣaparetaiḥ,
na ayaṃ dharmaḥ susaṃbuddhaḥ .

pratīsrotagāminaṃ nipuṇam,
gambhīraṃ dudarśaṃ aṇum ;
rāgaraktāḥ na drakṣyanti,
tamaskandhena āvṛtāḥ iti .

iti ha me, bhikṣavaḥ, pratisaṃcakṣāṇasya alpotsukatāyai cittaṃ namati, no dharmadeśanāyai .

avekṣasva jātijarābhibhūtām .

uttiṣṭha vīra vijitasaṃgrāma,
sārthavāha anṛṇa vicara loke ;
deśayatu bhagavān dharmam,

adrākṣīt khalu mām, bhikṣavaḥ, upakaḥ ājīvakaḥ antarā ca gayām antarā ca bodhim adhvānamārgapratipannam . dṛṣṭvā mām etad avocat — viprasannāni khalu te, āyuṣman, indriyāṇi, pariśuddhaḥ chavivarṇaḥ paryavadātaḥ . kam asi tvam, āyuṣman, uddiśya pravrajitaḥ, ko vā te śāstā, kasya vā tvaṃ dharmaṃ rocayasi iti ?

ahaṃ hi arhan loke, ahaṃ śāstā anuttaraḥ ; ekaḥ asmi samyaksambuddhaḥ, śītībhūtaḥ asmi nirvṛtaḥ .

dharmacakraṃ pravartayitum, gacchāmi kāśīnāṃ puram ; andhībhūtasmin loke, āhaniṣyāmi amṛtadundubhim iti .

yathā khalu tvam, āyuṣman, pratijānāsi, arhasi anantajinaḥ iti .

mādṛśāḥ vai jināḥ bhavanti, ye prāptāḥ āsravakṣayam ; jitāḥ me pāpakāḥ dharmāḥ, tasmāt aham upaka jinaḥ iti .

evam ukte, bhikṣavaḥ, upakaḥ ājīvakaḥ bhaved evam āyuṣman iti uktvā śīrṣaṃ avakampya unmārgaṃ gṛhītvā prākrāmat .

evam eva khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, ye hi kecit śramaṇāḥ vā brāhmaṇāḥ vā imān pañca kāmaguṇān grathitāḥ mūrcchitāḥ adhyāpannāḥ anādīnavadarśinaḥ aniḥsaraṇaprajñāḥ paribhuñjanti, te evam asuḥ veditavyāḥ — anayam āpannāḥ vyasanam āpannāḥ yathākāmakaraṇīyāḥ pāpmataḥ .

punaḥ ca aparam, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ vitarkavicārāṇāṃ vyupaśamāt adhyātmaṃ saṃprasādanaṃ cetasaḥ ekāgrībhāvam avitarkam avicāraṃ samādhijaṃ prītisukhaṃ dvitīyaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya viharati . ayam ucyate, bhikṣavaḥ … pāpmataḥ .

punaḥ ca aparam, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ prītyāḥ ca virāgāt upekṣakaḥ ca viharati, smṛtimān ca saṃprajānan, sukhaṃ ca kāyena pratisaṃvedayati yat tad āryāḥ ācakṣate — upekṣakaḥ smṛtimān sukhavihārī iti tṛtīyaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya viharati . ayam ucyate, bhikṣavaḥ … pāpmataḥ .

punaḥ ca aparam, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ sukhasya ca prahāṇāt duḥkhasya ca prahāṇāt pūrvam eva saumanasyadaurmanasyānām astaṃgamāt aduḥkhamasukham upekṣāsmṛtipāriśuddhiṃ caturthaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya viharati . ayam ucyate, bhikṣavaḥ … pāpmataḥ .
