madhyamanikāyaḥ 25 - nivāpasūtram

evaṃ mayā śrutam — ekasmin samaye bhagavān śrāvastyāṃ viharati sma jetavane anāthapiṇḍadasya ārāme . tatra khalu bhagavān bhikṣūn āmantrayata — bhikṣavaḥ iti .

bhadanta iti te bhikṣavaḥ bhagavataḥ pratyaśrauṣuḥ . bhagavān etad avocat —

na, bhikṣavaḥ, naivāpikaḥ nivāpaṃ nivapati mṛgajātānām — imaṃ me nivāpaṃ nyuptaṃ mṛgajātāḥ paribhuñjānāḥ dīrghāyuṣkāḥ varṇavantaḥ ciraṃ dīrgham adhvānaṃ yāpayantu iti . evaṃ ca khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, naivāpikaḥ nivāpaṃ nivapati mṛgajātānām — imaṃ me nivāpaṃ nyuptaṃ mṛgajātāḥ anupaskandya mūrcchitāḥ bhojanāni bhokṣyante, anupaskandya mūrcchitāḥ bhojanāni bhuñjānāḥ madam āpatsyante, mattāḥ samānāḥ pramādam āpatsyante, pramattāḥ samānāḥ yathākāmakaraṇīyāḥ bhaviṣyanti asmin nivāpe iti .

tatra, bhikṣavaḥ, prathamāḥ mṛgajātāḥ amuṃ nivāpaṃ nyuptaṃ naivāpikasya anupaskandya mūrcchitāḥ bhojanāni abhuñjan, te tatra anupaskandya mūrcchitāḥ bhojanāni bhuñjānāḥ madam āpadyanta, mattāḥ samānāḥ pramādam āpadyanta, pramattāḥ samānāḥ yathākāmakaraṇīyāḥ abhavan naivāpikasya amusmin nivāpe . evam hi te, bhikṣavaḥ, prathamāḥ mṛgajātāḥ na pariamucyanta naivāpikasya ṛddhyanubhāvāt .

tatra, bhikṣavaḥ, dvitīyāḥ mṛgajātāḥ evaṃ samacintayan — ye khalu te prathamāḥ mṛgajātāḥ amuṃ nivāpaṃ nyuptaṃ naivāpikasya anupaskandya mūrcchitāḥ bhojanāni abhuñjan . te tatra anupaskandya mūrcchitāḥ bhojanāni bhuñjānāḥ madam āpadyanta, mattāḥ samānāḥ pramādam āpadyanta, pramattāḥ samānāḥ yathākāmakaraṇīyāḥ abhavan naivāpikasya amusmin nivāpe . evam hi te prathamāḥ mṛgajātāḥ na pariamucyanta naivāpikasya ṛddhyanubhāvāt . yat nūnaṃ vayaṃ sarvaśaḥ nivāpabhojanāt prativirameṃa, bhayabhogāt prativiratāḥ araṇyāyatanāni avagāhya viharema iti . te sarvaśaḥ nivāpabhojanāt prativiraman, bhayabhogāt prativiratāḥ araṇyāyatanāni avagāhya aviharan . teṣāṃ grīṣmāṇāṃ paścime māse, tṛṇodakasaṃkṣaye, adhimātrakarśimānaṃ prāptaḥ kāyaḥ bhavati . teṣām adhimātrakarśimānaṃ prāptakāyānāṃ balavīryaṃ parihīyate . balavīrye parihīṇe tam eva nivāpaṃ nyuptaṃ naivāpikasya pratyāgaman . te tatra anupaskandya mūrcchitāḥ bhojanāni abhuñjan . te tatra anupaskandya mūrcchitāḥ bhojanāni bhuñjānāḥ madam āpadyanta, mattāḥ samānāḥ pramādam āpadyanta, pramattāḥ samānāḥ yathākāmakaraṇīyāḥ abhavan naivāpikasya amusmin nivāpe . evam hi te, bhikṣavaḥ, dvitīyāḥ api mṛgajātāḥ na pariamucyanta naivāpikasya ṛddhyanubhāvāt .

tatra, bhikṣavaḥ, naivāpikasya ca naivāpikapariṣadaḥ ca etad abhūt — śaṭhāḥ svit nāma ime tṛtīyāḥ mṛgajātāḥ kaitavinaḥ, ṛddhimantaḥ svit nāma ime tṛtīyāḥ mṛgajātāḥ parajanāḥ ; imam ca nāma nivāpaṃ nyuptaṃ paribhuñjanti, na ca eṣāṃ jānīmaḥ āgatiṃ vā gatiṃ vā . yat nūnaṃ vayam imaṃ nivāpaṃ nyuptaṃ mahatībhiḥ daṇḍavāgurābhiḥ samantāt sapradeśam anuparivārayema, api eva nāma tṛtīyānāṃ mṛgajātānām āśayaṃ paśyema, yatra te grāhaṃ gaccheyuḥ iti . te amuṃ nivāpaṃ nyuptaṃ mahatībhiḥ daṇḍavāgurābhiḥ samantāt sapradeśam anuparivārayan . adrākṣuḥ khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, naivāpikaḥ ca naivāpikapariṣat ca tṛtīyānāṃ mṛgajātānām āśayam, yatra te grāham agaman . evam hi te, bhikṣavaḥ, tṛtīyāḥ api mṛgajātāḥ na pariamucyanta naivāpikasya ṛddhyanubhāvāt .

upamā khalu me iyam, bhikṣavaḥ, kṛtā arthasya vijñāpanāya . ayaṃ ca eva atra arthaḥ —

nivāpaḥ iti khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, pañcānām etat kāmaguṇānām adhivacanam .

naivāpikaḥ iti khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, mārasya etat pāpmataḥ adhivacanam .

naivāpikapariṣat iti khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, mārapariṣadaḥ etat adhivacanam .

mṛgajātāḥ iti khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, śramaṇabrāhmaṇānām etat adhivacanam .

tatra, bhikṣavaḥ, prathamāḥ śramaṇabrāhmaṇāḥ amuṃ nivāpaṃ nyuptaṃ mārasya amūni ca lokāmiṣāṇi anupaskandya mūrcchitāḥ bhojanāni abhuñjan . te tatra anupaskandya mūrcchitāḥ bhojanāni bhuñjānāḥ madam āpadyanta, mattāḥ samānāḥ pramādam āpadyanta, pramattāḥ samānāḥ yathākāmakaraṇīyāḥ abhavan mārasya amusmin nivāpe amusmin ca lokāmiṣe . evam hi te, bhikṣavaḥ, prathamāḥ śramaṇabrāhmaṇāḥ na pariamucyanta mārasya ṛddhyanubhāvāt . tadyathā api te, bhikṣavaḥ, prathamāḥ mṛgajātāḥ tathopamān aham imān prathamān śramaṇabrāhmaṇān vadāmi .

teṣāṃ grīṣmāṇāṃ paścime māse, tṛṇodakasaṃkṣaye, adhimātrakarśimānaṃ prāptaḥ kāyaḥ bhavati . teṣām adhimātrakarśimānaṃ prāptakāyānāṃ balavīryaṃ parihīyate . balavīrye parihīṇe cetovimuktiḥ parihīyate . cetovimuktyāḥ parihīṇāyāḥ tam eva nivāpaṃ nyuptaṃ mārasya pratyāgaman tāni ca lokāmiṣāṇi . te tatra anupaskandya mūrcchitāḥ bhojanāni abhuñjan . te tatra anupaskandya mūrcchitāḥ bhojanāni bhuñjānāḥ madam āpadyanta, mattāḥ samānāḥ pramādam āpadyanta, pramattāḥ samānāḥ yathākāmakaraṇīyāḥ abhavan mārasya amusmin nivāpe amusmin ca lokāmiṣe . evam hi te, bhikṣavaḥ, dvitīyāḥ api śramaṇabrāhmaṇāḥ na pariamucyanta mārasya ṛddhyanubhāvāt . tadyathā api te, bhikṣavaḥ, dvitīyāḥ mṛgajātāḥ tathopamān aham imān dvitīyān śramaṇabrāhmaṇān vadāmi .

te amuṃ nivāpaṃ nyuptaṃ mārasya amūni ca lokāmiṣāṇi upaniśritya āśayam akalpayan . tatra āśayaṃ kalpayitvā amuṃ nivāpaṃ nyuptaṃ mārasya amūni ca lokāmiṣāṇi ananupaskandya amūrcchitāḥ bhojanāni abhuñjan . te tatra ananupaskandya amūrcchitāḥ bhojanāni bhuñjānāḥ na madam āpadyanta, amattāḥ samānāḥ na pramādam āpadyanta, apramattāḥ samānāḥ na yathākāmakaraṇīyāḥ abhavan mārasya amusmin nivāpe amusmin ca lokāmiṣe . api ca khalu evaṃdṛṣṭikāḥ abhavan — śāśvataḥ lokaḥ iti api, aśāśvataḥ lokaḥ iti api ; antavān lokaḥ iti api, anantavān lokaḥ iti api ; tat jīvaṃ tat śarīram iti api, anyat jīvam anyat śarīram iti api ; bhavati tathāgataḥ paraṃ maraṇāt iti api, na bhavati tathāgataḥ paraṃ maraṇāt iti api, bhavati ca na ca bhavati tathāgataḥ paraṃ maraṇāt iti api, na eva bhavati na na bhavati tathāgataḥ paraṃ maraṇāt iti api . evam hi te, bhikṣavaḥ, tṛtīyāḥ api śramaṇabrāhmaṇāḥ na pariamucyanta mārasya ṛddhyanubhāvāt . tadyathā api te, bhikṣavaḥ, tṛtīyāḥ mṛgajātāḥ tathopamān aham imān tṛtīyān śramaṇabrāhmaṇān vadāmi .

te yatra agatiḥ mārasya ca mārapariṣadaḥ ca tatra āśayam akalpayan . tatra āśayaṃ kalpayitvā amuṃ nivāpaṃ nyuptaṃ mārasya amūni ca lokāmiṣāṇi ananupaskandya amūrcchitāḥ bhojanāni abhuñjan, te tatra ananupaskandya amūrcchitāḥ bhojanāni bhuñjānāḥ na madam āpadyanta, amattāḥ samānāḥ na pramādam āpadyanta, apramattāḥ samānāḥ na yathākāmakaraṇīyāḥ abhavan mārasya amusmin nivāpe amusmin ca lokāmiṣe . evam hi te, bhikṣavaḥ, caturthāḥ śramaṇabrāhmaṇāḥ pariamucyanta mārasya ṛddhyanubhāvāt . tadyathā api te, bhikṣavaḥ, caturthāḥ mṛgajātāḥ tathopamān aham imān caturthān śramaṇabrāhmaṇān vadāmi .

kathaṃ ca, bhikṣavaḥ, agatiḥ mārasya ca mārapariṣadaḥ ca ? iha, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ vivicya eva kāmebhyaḥ vivicya akuśalebhyaḥ dharmebhyaḥ savitarkaṃ savicāraṃ vivekajaṃ prītisukhaṃ prathamaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya viharati . ayam ucyate, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ andham akārṣīt māram, apadaṃ vadhvā māracakṣuḥ adarśanaṃ gataḥ pāpmataḥ .

punaḥ ca aparam, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ vitarkavicārāṇāṃ vyupaśamāt adhyātmaṃ saṃprasādanaṃ cetasaḥ ekāgrībhāvam avitarkam avicāraṃ samādhijaṃ prītisukhaṃ dvitīyaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya viharati . ayam ucyate, bhikṣavaḥ … pāpmataḥ .

punaḥ ca aparam, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ prītyāḥ ca virāgāt upekṣakaḥ ca viharati smṛtimān ca saṃprajānan, sukhaṃ ca kāyena pratisaṃvedayate yat tad āryāḥ ācakṣate upekṣakaḥ smṛtimān sukhavihārī iti tṛtīyaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya viharati . ayam ucyate, bhikṣavaḥ … pāpmataḥ .

punaḥ ca aparam, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ sukhasya ca prahāṇāt duḥkhasya ca prahāṇāt, pūrvam eva saumanasyadaurmanasyānām astaṃgamāt, aduḥkhamasukham upekṣāsmṛtipāriśuddhiṃ caturthaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya viharati . ayam ucyate, bhikṣavaḥ … pāpmataḥ .

punaḥ ca aparam, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ sarvaśaḥ rūpasaṃjñānāṃ samatikramāt pratighasaṃjñānām astaṃgamāt nānātvasaṃjñānām amanasikārāt anantaḥ ākāśaḥ iti ākāśānantyāyatanam upasaṃpadya viharati . ayam ucyate, bhikṣavaḥ … pāpmataḥ .

punaḥ ca aparam, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ sarvaśaḥ ākāśānantyāyatanaṃ samatikramya anantaṃ vijñānam iti vijñānānantyāyatanam upasaṃpadya viharati . ayam ucyate, bhikṣavaḥ … pāpmataḥ .

punaḥ ca aparam, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ sarvaśaḥ vijñānānantyāyatanaṃ samatikramya na asti kiṃcit iti ākiṃcanyāyatanam upasaṃpadya viharati . ayam ucyate, bhikṣavaḥ … pāpmataḥ .

punaḥ ca aparam, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ sarvaśaḥ naivasaṃjñānāsaṃjñāyatanaṃ samatikramya saṃjñāvedayitanirodham upasaṃpadya viharati . prajñayā ca asya dṛṣṭvā āsravāḥ parikṣīṇāḥ bhavanti . ayam ucyate, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ andham akārṣīt māram, apadaṃ vadhvā māracakṣuḥ adarśanaṃ gataḥ pāpmataḥ tīrṇaḥ loke viṣaktikām iti .
