madhyamanikāyaḥ 27 - kṣudrahastipadopamasūtram

evaṃ mayā śrutam — ekasmin samaye bhagavān śrāvastyāṃ viharati sma jetavane anāthapiṇḍadasya ārāme .

tena khalu punaḥ samayena jānūśroṇiḥ brāhmaṇaḥ sarvaśvetena vaḍavābhṛtarathena śrāvastītaḥ niryāti divādivasaḥ . adrākṣīt khalu jānūśroṇiḥ brāhmaṇaḥ pilotikaṃ parivrājakaṃ dūrataḥ eva āgacchantam . dṛṣṭvā pilotikaṃ parivrājakam etad avocat — hanta kutaḥ nu bhavān vātsyāyanaḥ āgacchati divādivasaḥ iti ?

itaḥ hi khalu aham, bhoḥ, āgacchāmi śramaṇasya gautamasya antikāt iti .

tat kiṃ manyate bhavān vātsyāyanaḥ śramaṇasya gautamasya prajñāvaidagdhyam, paṇḍitaḥ manye iti .

kaḥ ca aham, bhoḥ, kaḥ ca śramaṇasya gautamasya prajñāvaidagdhyaṃ jñāsyāmi . saḥ api nūnam asya tādṛśaḥ eva yaḥ śramaṇasya gautamasya prajñāvaidagdhyaṃ jānīyāt iti .

udārayā khalu bhavān vātsyāyanaḥ śramaṇaṃ gautamaṃ praśaṃsayā praśaṃsati iti .

kaḥ ca aham, bhoḥ, kaḥ ca śramaṇaṃ gautamaṃ praśaṃsiṣyāmi, praśastapraśastaḥ eva saḥ bhavān gautamaḥ śreṣṭhaḥ devamanuṣyāṇām iti .

kam punar bhavān vātsyāyanaḥ arthavaśaṃ saṃpaśyan śramaṇe gautame evam abhiprasannaḥ iti ?

tadyathā api, bhoḥ, kuśalaḥ nāgavanikaḥ nāgavanaṃ praviśet . saḥ paśyet nāgavane mahāntaṃ hastipadam, dīrghatvena ca āyatam, tiryaktvena ca vistṛtam . saḥ niṣṭhāṃ gacchet — mahān vata bhoḥ nāgaḥ iti .

evam eva khalu aham, bhoḥ, yataḥ adrākṣam śramaṇe gautame catvāri padāni atha ahaṃ niṣṭhām agamam — samyaksambuddhaḥ bhagavān, svākhyātaḥ bhagavatā dharmaḥ, supratipannaḥ bhagavataḥ śrāvakasaṃghaḥ iti .

katamāni catvāri ? iha ahaṃ, bhoḥ, paśyāmi eke kṣatriyapaṇḍitāḥ nipuṇāḥ kṛtaparapravādāḥ vālavedhirūpāḥ, te bhindantaḥ manye caranti prajñāgatena dṛṣṭigatāni . te śṛṇvanti — śramaṇaḥ khalu, bhoḥ, gautamaḥ amukaṃ nāma grāmaṃ vā nigamaṃ vā avasariṣyati iti . te praśnam abhisaṃskurvanti — imaṃ vayaṃ praśnaṃ śramaṇaṃ gautamam upasaṃkramya pṛcchiṣyāmaḥ . evam cet naḥ pṛṣṭaḥ evaṃ vyākariṣyati, evam asya vayaṃ vādam āropayiṣyāmaḥ . evam cet api naḥ pṛṣṭaḥ evaṃ vyākariṣyati, evam api asya vayaṃ vādam āropayiṣyāmaḥ iti .

te śṛṇvanti — śramaṇaḥ khalu, bhoḥ, gautamaḥ amukaṃ nāma grāmaṃ vā nigamaṃ vā avasṛtaḥ iti . te śramaṇaṃ gautamam upasaṃkramanti . tān śramaṇaḥ gautamaḥ dharmyayā kathayā saṃdarśayati samādāpayati samuttejayati saṃpraharṣayati . te śramaṇena gautamena dharmyayā kathayā saṃdarśitāḥ samādāpitāḥ samuttejitāḥ saṃpraharṣitāḥ na ca eva śramaṇaṃ gautamaṃ praśnaṃ pṛcchanti, kutaḥ asya vādam āropayiṣyanti ? nūnaṃ śramaṇasya eva gautamasya śrāvakāḥ saṃpadyante . yadā aham, bhoḥ, śramaṇe gautame imaṃ prathamaṃ padam adrākṣam atha ahaṃ niṣṭhām agamam — samyaksambuddhaḥ bhagavān, svākhyātaḥ bhagavatā dharmaḥ, supratipannaḥ bhagavataḥ śrāvakasaṃghaḥ iti .

punaḥ ca aparam aham, bhoḥ, paśyāmi iha eke brāhmaṇapaṇḍitāḥ … gṛhapatipaṇḍitāḥ …

te evam āhuḥ — manāg vata, bhoḥ, anaśyāma, manāg vata, bhoḥ, praṇaśyāma ; vayaṃ hi pūrvaṃ aśramaṇāḥ eva samānāḥ śramaṇāḥ smaḥ iti pratijānīmahi, abrāhmaṇāḥ eva samānāḥ brāhmaṇāḥ smaḥ iti pratijānīmahi, anarhantaḥ eva samānāḥ arhantaḥ smaḥ iti pratijānīmahi . idānīṃ khalu smaḥ śramaṇāḥ, idānīṃ khalu smaḥ brāhmaṇāḥ, idānīṃ khalu smaḥ arhantaḥ iti . yadā aham, bhoḥ, śramaṇe gautame imaṃ caturthaṃ padam adrākṣam atha ahaṃ niṣṭhām agamam — samyaksambuddhaḥ bhagavān, svākhyātaḥ bhagavatā dharmaḥ, supratipannaḥ bhagavataḥ śrāvakasaṃghaḥ iti .

yataḥ khalu aham, bhoḥ, śramaṇe gautame imāni catvāri padāni adrākṣam atha ahaṃ niṣṭhām agamam — samyaksambuddhaḥ bhagavān, svākhyātaḥ bhagavatā dharmaḥ, supratipannaḥ bhagavataḥ śrāvakasaṃghaḥ iti .

evam ukte, jānūśroṇiḥ brāhmaṇaḥ sarvaśvetāt vaḍavābhṛtarathāt avaruhya ekāṃsam uttarāsaṅgaṃ kṛtvā bhagavantam añjalinā praṇamya trikṛtvaḥ udānam udānayām āsa —

namaḥ tasmai bhagavate arhate samyaksambuddhāya ;

namaḥ tasmai bhagavate arhate samyaksambuddhāya ;

namaḥ tasmai bhagavate arhate samyaksambuddhāya iti .

api eva nāma vayam api kadācit karhicit tena bhavatā gautamena sārdhaṃ samāgacchema, api eva nāma syāt kaścit eva kathāsallāpaḥ iti .

atha khalu jānūśroṇiḥ brāhmaṇaḥ bhagavantam upasaṃcakrāma ; upasaṃkramya bhagavatā sārdhaṃ samamodata . saṃmodanīyāṃ kathāṃ smāraṇīyāṃ vyatisārya ekānte nyaṣīdat . ekānte niṣaṇṇaḥ khalu jānūśroṇiḥ brāhmaṇaḥ yāvatakaḥ abhūt pilotikena parivrājakena sārdhaṃ kathāsallāpaḥ taṃ sarvaṃ bhagavate ārocayām āsa .

evam ukte, bhagavān jānūśroṇiṃ brāhmaṇam etad avocat — na khalu, brāhmaṇa, etāvatā hastipadopamaḥ vistāreṇa paripūrṇaḥ bhavati . api ca, brāhmaṇa, yathā hastipadopamaḥ vistāreṇa paripūrṇaḥ bhavati taṃ śṛṇu, sādhu manasi kuru, bhāṣiṣye iti .

evam, bhoḥ iti khalu jānūśroṇiḥ brāhmaṇaḥ bhagavataḥ pratyaśrauṣīt . bhagavān etad avocat —

tadyathā api, brāhmaṇa, nāgavanikaḥ nāgavanaṃ praviśet . saḥ paśyet nāgavane mahāntaṃ hastipadam, dīrghatvena ca āyatam, tiryaktvena ca vistṛtam . yaḥ bhavati kuśalaḥ nāgavanikaḥ na eva tāvat niṣṭhāṃ gacchati — mahān vata bhoḥ nāgaḥ iti . tat kasya hetoḥ ? santi hi, brāhmaṇa, nāgavane vāmanikāḥ nāma hastinyaḥ mahāpadāḥ, tāsāṃ hi etad padaṃ syāt iti .

saḥ tam anugacchati . tam anugacchan paśyati nāgavane mahāntaṃ hastipadam, dīrghatvena ca āyatam, tiryaktvena ca vistṛtam, uccaiḥ ca niṣevitam, uccaiḥ ca dantaiḥ ārañjitāni, uccaiḥ ca śākhābhaṅgam . taṃ ca nāgaṃ paśyati vṛkṣamūlagataṃ vā abhyavakāśagataṃ vā gacchantam vā tiṣṭhantaṃ vā niṣaṇṇaṃ vā nipannaṃ vā . saḥ niṣṭhāṃ gacchati — ayam eva saḥ mahānāgaḥ iti .

evam eva khalu, brāhmaṇa, iha tathāgataḥ loke utpadyate arhan samyaksambuddhaḥ vidyācaraṇasaṃpannaḥ sugataḥ lokavid anuttaraḥ puruṣadamyasārathiḥ śāstā devamanuṣyāṇāṃ buddhaḥ bhagavān . saḥ imaṃ lokaṃ sadevakaṃ samārakaṃ sabrahmakaṃ saśramaṇabrāhmaṇīṃ prajāṃ sadevamanuṣyāṃ svayam abhijñāya sākṣātkṛtya pravedayati . saḥ dharmaṃ deśayati ādikalyāṇaṃ madhyekalyāṇaṃ paryavasānakalyāṇaṃ sārthaṃ savyañjanam ; kevalaparipūrṇaṃ pariśuddhaṃ brahmacaryaṃ prakāśayati .

taṃ dharmaṃ śṛṇoti gṛhapatiḥ vā gṛhapatiputraḥ vā anyatarasmin vā kule pratyājātaḥ . saḥ taṃ dharmaṃ śrutvā tathāgate śraddhāṃ pratilabhate . saḥ tena śraddhāpratilābhena samanvitaḥ iti pratisaṃcakṣate — saṃbādhaḥ gṛhāvāsaḥ rajapathaḥ, abhyavakāśaḥ pravrajyā . na idam sukaraṃ agāram adhyāvasatā ekantaparipūrṇaṃ ekantapariśuddhaṃ śaṅkhalikhitaṃ brahmacaryaṃ caritum . yan nu ahaṃ keśaśmaśru avahārya kāṣāyāṇi vastrāṇi ācchādya agārāt anagārikāṃ pravrajeyam iti . saḥ apareṇa samayena alpaṃ vā bhogaskandhaṃ prahāya mahāntaṃ vā bhogaskandhaṃ prahāya alpaṃ vā jñātiparivartaṃ prahāya mahāntaṃ vā jñātiparivartaṃ prahāya keśaśmaśru avahārya kāṣāyāṇi vastrāṇi ācchādya agārāt anagārikāṃ pravrajati .

saḥ evaṃ pravrajitaḥ samānaḥ bhikṣūṇāṃ śikṣāsājīvasamāpannaḥ prāṇātipātaṃ prahāya prāṇātipātāt prativirataḥ bhavati, nihitadaṇḍaḥ nihitaśastraḥ lajjī dayāpannaḥ sarvaprāṇabhūtahitānukampī viharati .

adattādānaṃ prahāya adattādānāt prativirataḥ bhavati dattādāyī dattapratikāṅkṣī . astainyena śucibhūtena ātmanā viharati .

abrahmacaryaṃ prahāya brahmacārī bhavati ārāccārī virataḥ maithunāt grāmadharmāt .

mṛṣāvādaṃ prahāya mṛṣāvādāt prativirataḥ bhavati satyavādī satyasandhaḥ sthitaḥ pratyayikaḥ avisaṃvādakaḥ lokasya .

piśunāṃ vācaṃ prahāya piśunāyāḥ vācaḥ prativirataḥ bhavati, itaḥ śrutvā na amutra ākhyātā imeṣāṃ bhedāya, amutra vā śrutvā na imeṣām ākhyātā amīṣāṃ bhedāya . iti bhinnānāṃ vā saṃdhātā sahitānāṃ vā anupradātā, samagrārāmaḥ samagrarataḥ samagranandī samagrakaraṇīṃ vācaṃ bhāṣitā bhavati .

paruṣāṃ vācaṃ prahāya paruṣāyāḥ vācaḥ prativirataḥ bhavati . yā sā vācā nelā karṇasukhā premanīyā hṛdaṃgamā paurī bahujanakāntā bahujanamanojñā tathārūpīṃ vācaṃ bhāṣitā bhavati .

saṃbhinnapralāpaṃ prahāya saṃbhinnapralāpāt prativirataḥ bhavati kālavādī bhūtavādī arthavādī dharmavādī vinayavādī, nidhānavatīṃ vācaṃ bhāṣitā kālena sāpadeśāṃ paryantavatīṃ arthasaṃhitām .

saḥ bījagrāmabhūtagrāmasamārambhāt prativirataḥ bhavati, ekabhaktikaḥ bhavati rātryuparatataḥ, virataḥ vikālabhojanāt, nṛtyagītavāditavisūkadarśanāt prativirataḥ bhavati, mālyagandhavilepanadhāraṇamaṇḍanavibhūṣaṇasthānāt prativirataḥ bhavati, uccāśayanamahāśayanāt prativirataḥ bhavati, jātarūparajatapratigrahaṇāt prativirataḥ bhavati, āmakadhānyapratigrahaṇāt prativirataḥ bhavati, āmakamāṃsapratigrahaṇāt prativirataḥ bhavati, strīkumārīpratigrahaṇāt prativirataḥ bhavati, dāsīdāsapratigrahaṇāt prativirataḥ bhavati, ajaiḍakapratigrahaṇāt prativirataḥ bhavati, kukkuṭasūkarapratigrahaṇāt prativirataḥ bhavati, hastigavāśvabaḍavapratigrahaṇāt prativirataḥ bhavati, kṣetravāstupratigrahaṇāt prativirataḥ bhavati, dūtyaprahiṇagamanānuyogāt prativirataḥ bhavati, krayavikrayāt prativirataḥ bhavati, tulākūṭakaṃsakūṭamānakūṭāt prativirataḥ bhavati, utkoṭanavañcananikṛtisāciyogāt prativirataḥ bhavati, chedanavadhabandhanaviparāmarśālāpasāhasākārāt prativirataḥ bhavati .

saḥ saṃtuṣṭhaḥ bhavati kāyaparihārikeṇa cīvareṇa kukṣiparihārikeṇa piṇḍapātena . saḥ yena yena eva prakrāmati samādāya eva prakrāmati . tadyathā api nāma pakṣī śakuniḥ yena yena eva ḍayate sapatrabhāraḥ eva ḍayate ; evam eva bhikṣuḥ saṃtuṣṭhaḥ bhavati kāyaparihārikeṇa cīvareṇa kukṣiparihārikeṇa piṇḍapātena . saḥ yena yena eva prakrāmati samādāya eva prakrāmati . saḥ anena āryeṇa śīlaskandhena samanvitaḥ adhyātmam anavadyasukhaṃ pratisaṃvedayati .

saḥ cakṣuṣā rūpaṃ dṛṣṭvā na nimittagrāhī bhavati na anuvyañjanagrāhī . yatvādhikaraṇam enaṃ cakṣurindriyam asaṃvṛtaṃ viharantam abhidhyādaurmanasyāḥ pāpakāḥ akuśalāḥ dharmāḥ anvāśraveyuḥ tasya saṃvarāya pratipadyate, rakṣati cakṣurindriyam, cakṣurindriye saṃvaram āpadyate . śrotreṇa śabdaṃ śrutvā … ghrāṇena gandhaṃ ghrātvā … jihvayā rasaṃ svādayitvā … kāyena spraṣṭavyaṃ spṛṣṭvā … manasā dharmaṃ vijñāya na nimittagrāhī bhavati na anuvyañjanagrāhī . yatvādhikaraṇam enaṃ manaindriyam asaṃvṛtaṃ viharantam abhidhyādaurmanasyāḥ pāpakāḥ akuśalāḥ dharmāḥ anvāśraveyuḥ tasya saṃvarāya pratipadyate, rakṣati manaindriyam, manaindriye saṃvaram āpadyate . saḥ anena āryeṇa indriyasaṃvareṇa samanvitaḥ adhyātmam avyāsekasukhaṃ pratisaṃvedayati .

saḥ abhikrānte pratikrānte saṃprajānakārī bhavati, ālokite vilokite saṃprajānakārī bhavati, saṃmiñjite prasārite saṃprajānakārī bhavati, saṃghāṭīpātracīvaradhāraṇe saṃprajānakārī bhavati, aśite pīte khādite svādite saṃprajānakārī bhavati, uccārapraśrāvakarmani saṃprajānakārī bhavati, gate sthite niṣaṇṇe supte jāgarite bhāṣite tūṣṇīṃbhāve saṃprajānakārī bhavati .

saḥ anena ca āryeṇa śīlaskandhena samanvitaḥ, anayā ca āryayā saṃtuṣṭyā samanvitaḥ anena ca āryeṇa indriyasaṃvareṇa samanvitaḥ, anena ca āryeṇa smṛtisaṃprajñānena samanvitaḥ viviktaṃ śayanāsanaṃ bhajati araṇyaṃ vṛkṣamūlaṃ parvataṃ kandaraṃ giriguhāṃ śmaśānaṃ vanaprastham abhyavakāśaṃ palālapuñjam .

saḥ paścādbhaktaṃ piṇḍapātāt pratikrāntaḥ niṣīdati paryaṅkam ābhujya, ṛjuṃ kāyaṃ praṇidhāya, parimukhaṃ smṛtim upasthāpya . saḥ abhidhyāṃ loke prahāya vigatābhidhyena cetasā viharati, abhidhyāyāḥ cittaṃ pariśodhayati . vyāpādapradoṣaṃ prahāya avyāpannacittaḥ viharati, sarvaprāṇabhūtahitānukampī vyāpādapradoṣāt cittaṃ pariśodhayati . styānamiddhaṃ prahāya vigatastyānamiddhaḥ viharati ālokasaṃjñī smṛtimān saṃprajānan, styānamiddhāt cittaṃ pariśodhayati . auddhatyakaukṛtyaṃ prahāya anuddhataḥ viharati, adhyātmaṃ vyupaśāntacittaḥ auddhatyakaukṛtyāt cittaṃ pariśodhayati . vicikitsāṃ prahāya tīrṇavicikitsaḥ viharati akathaṃkathī kuśaleṣu dharmeṣu, vicikitsāyāḥ cittaṃ pariśodhayati .

saḥ imāni pañca nīvaraṇāni prahāya cetasaḥ upakleśāni prajñāyāḥ durbalīkaraṇāni, vivicya eva kāmebhyaḥ vivicya akuśalebhyaḥ dharmebhyaḥ savitarkaṃ savicāraṃ vivekajaṃ prītisukhaṃ prathamaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya viharati . idam api ucyate, brāhmaṇa, tathāgatapadam iti api, tathāgataniṣevitam iti api, tathāgatārañjitam iti api . na tv eva tāvat āryaśrāvakaḥ niṣṭhāṃ gacchati — samyaksambuddhaḥ bhagavān, svākhyātaḥ bhagavatā dharmaḥ, supratipannaḥ bhagavataḥ śrāvakasaṃghaḥ iti .

punaḥ ca aparam, brāhmaṇa, bhikṣuḥ vitarkavicārāṇāṃ vyupaśamāt adhyātmaṃ saṃprasādanaṃ cetasaḥ ekāgrībhāvam avitarkam avicāraṃ samādhijaṃ prītisukhaṃ dvitīyaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya viharati . idam api ucyate, brāhmaṇa … supratipannaḥ bhagavataḥ śrāvakasaṃghaḥ iti .

punaḥ ca aparam, brāhmaṇa, bhikṣuḥ prītyāḥ ca virāgāt upekṣakaḥ ca viharati smṛtimān ca saṃprajānan, sukhaṃ ca kāyena pratisaṃvedayati, yat tad āryāḥ ācakṣate — upekṣakaḥ smṛtimān sukhavihārī iti tṛtīyaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya viharati . idam api ucyate, brāhmaṇa … supratipannaḥ bhagavataḥ śrāvakasaṃghaḥ iti .

punaḥ ca aparam, brāhmaṇa, bhikṣuḥ sukhasya ca prahāṇāt duḥkhasya ca prahāṇāt, pūrvam eva saumanasyadaurmanasyānām astaṃgamāt, aduḥkhamasukham upekṣāsmṛtipāriśuddhiṃ caturthaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya viharati . idam api ucyate, brāhmaṇa, tathāgatapadam iti api, tathāgataniṣevitam iti api, tathāgatārañjitam iti api . na tv eva tāvat āryaśrāvakaḥ niṣṭhāṃ gacchati — samyaksambuddhaḥ bhagavān, svākhyātaḥ bhagavatā dharmaḥ, supratipannaḥ bhagavataḥ śrāvakasaṃghaḥ iti .

saḥ evaṃ samāhite citte pariśuddhe paryavadāte anaṅgaṇe vigatopakleśe mṛdubhūte karmaṇye sthite āniñjyaprāpte pūrvanivāsānusmṛtijñānāya cittam abhinyanāmayati . saḥ anekavihitaṃ pūrvanivāsam anusmarati, tadyathā — ekām api jātim, dve api jātī … iti sākāraṃ soddeśam anekavihitaṃ pūrvanivāsam anusmarati . idam api ucyate, brāhmaṇa, tathāgatapadam iti api, tathāgataniṣevitam iti api, tathāgatārañjitam iti api . na tv eva tāvat āryaśrāvakaḥ niṣṭhāṃ gacchati — samyaksambuddhaḥ bhagavān, svākhyātaḥ bhagavatā dharmaḥ, supratipannaḥ bhagavataḥ śrāvakasaṃghaḥ iti .

tasya evaṃ jānataḥ evaṃ paśyataḥ kāmāsravāt api cittaṃ vimucyate, bhavāsravāt api cittaṃ vimucyate, avidyāsravāt api cittaṃ vimucyate . vimukte vimuktam iti jñānaṃ bhavati .

kṣīṇā jātiḥ, uṣitaṃ brahmacaryam, kṛtaṃ karaṇīyam, na aparam itthatvāya iti prajānāti . idam api ucyate, brāhmaṇa, tathāgatapadam iti api, tathāgataniṣevitam iti api, tathāgatārañjitam iti api . etāvatā khalu, brāhmaṇa, āryaśrāvakaḥ niṣṭhāṃ gataḥ bhavati — samyaksambuddhaḥ bhagavān, svākhyātaḥ bhagavatā dharmaḥ, supratipannaḥ bhagavataḥ śrāvakasaṃghaḥ iti . etāvatā khalu, brāhmaṇa, hastipadopamaḥ vistāreṇa paripūrṇaḥ bhavati iti .

evam ukte, jānūśroṇiḥ brāhmaṇaḥ bhagavantam etad avocat — atikrāntam, bhoḥ gautama, atikrāntam, bhoḥ gautama . tadyathā api, bhoḥ gautama, nyubjitaṃ vā udubjet, pracchannaṃ vā vivṛṇuyāt, mūḍhāya vā mārgam ācakṣīta, andhakāre vā tailapradyotaṃ dhārayet — cakṣuṣmantaḥ rūpāṇi drakṣyanti iti ; evam eva bhavatā gautamena anekaparyāyena dharmaḥ prakāśitaḥ . eṣaḥ ahaṃ bhavantaṃ gautamaṃ śaraṇaṃ gacchāmi, dharmaṃ ca, bhikṣusaṃghaṃ ca . upāsakaṃ māṃ bhavān gautamaḥ dhārayatu adyaprabhṛti prāṇopetaṃ śaraṇaṃ gatam iti .
