evaṃ mayā śrutam — ekasmin samaye bhagavān śrāvastyāṃ viharati sma jetavane anāthapiṇḍadasya ārāme . tatra khalu āyuṣmān śāriputraḥ bhikṣūn āmantrayata — āyuṣmantaḥ bhikṣavaḥ iti .
āyuṣman iti khalu te bhikṣavaḥ āyuṣmataḥ śāriputrasya pratyaśrauṣuḥ . āyuṣmān śāriputraḥ etad avocat —
tadyathā api, āyuṣmantaḥ, yāni kānicit jāṅgalānāṃ prāṇināṃ padajātāni sarvāṇi tāni hastipade samavadhānaṃ gacchanti, hastipadam teṣām agram ākhyāyate yad idam mahattvena ; evam eva khalu, āyuṣmantaḥ, ye kecit kuśalāḥ dharmāḥ sarve te caturṣu āryasatyeṣu saṃgrahaṃ gacchanti . katameṣu caturṣu ? duḥkhe āryasatye, duḥkhasamudaye āryasatye, duḥkhanirodhe āryasatye, duḥkhanirodhagāminyāṃ pratipadi āryasatye .
katamat ca, āyuṣmantaḥ, duḥkham āryasatyam ? jātiḥ api duḥkhā, jarā api duḥkhā, maraṇam api duḥkham, śokaparidevaduḥkhadaurmanasyopāyāsāḥ api duḥkhāḥ, yad api icchan na labhate tad api duḥkham ; saṃkṣiptena, pañcopādānaskandhāḥ duḥkhāḥ . katame ca, āyuṣmantaḥ, pañcopādānaskandhāḥ ? tadyathā — rūpopādānaskandhaḥ, vedanopādānaskandhaḥ, saṃjñopādānaskandhaḥ, saṃskāropādānaskandhaḥ, vijñānopādānaskandhaḥ .
katamaḥ ca, āyuṣmantaḥ, rūpopādānaskandhaḥ ? catvāri ca mahābhūtāni, caturṇāṃ ca mahābhūtānām upādāyarūpam .
katamāni ca, āyuṣmantaḥ, catvāri mahābhūtāni ? pṛthivīdhātuḥ, abdhātuḥ, tejodhātuḥ, vāyudhātuḥ .
katamā ca, āyuṣmantaḥ, pṛthivīdhātuḥ ? pṛthivīdhātuḥ syāt ādhyātmikī, syāt bāhirā . katamā ca, āyuṣmantaḥ, ādhyātmikī pṛthivīdhātuḥ ? yad adhyātmaṃ pratyātmaṃ karkaśaṃ kharigatam upādinnam, tadyathā — keśāḥ lomāni nakhāḥ dantāḥ tvak māṃsaṃ snāyuḥ asthi asthimajjā vṛkkam hṛdayam yakṛt klomakaṃ plīhā phuphphusam antram antrakuṇḍalaṃ udaryam karīṣam, yad vā punar anyad api kiṃcit adhyātmaṃ pratyātmaṃ karkaśaṃ kharigatam upādinnam . iyam ucyate, āyuṣmantaḥ, ādhyātmikī pṛthivīdhātuḥ . yā ca eva khalu punar ādhyātmikī pṛthivīdhātuḥ, yā ca bāhirā pṛthivīdhātuḥ, pṛthivīdhātuḥ eva eṣā . tad na etat mama, na eṣaḥ aham asmi, na me eṣaḥ ātmā iti — evam etat yathābhūtaṃ samyakprajñayā draṣṭavyam . evam etat yathābhūtaṃ samyakprajñayā dṛṣṭvā pṛthivīdhātuyāḥ nirvidyate, pṛthivīdhātuyāḥ cittaṃ virājayati .
bhavati khalu saḥ, āyuṣmantaḥ, samayaḥ yad bāhirā pṛthivīdhātuḥ prakupyati . antardhitā tasmin samaye bāhirā pṛthivīdhātuḥ bhavati . tasyāḥ hi nāma, āyuṣmantaḥ, bāhirāyāḥ pṛthivīdhātuyāḥ tāvat mahallikāyāḥ anityatā prajñāsyate, kṣayadharmatā prajñāsyate, vyayadharmatā prajñāsyate, vipariṇāmadharmatā prajñāsyate . kiṃ punar asya mātrāsthitasya kāyasya tṛṣṇopāttasya aham iti vā mama iti vā asmi iti vā ? atha khalu asya na uta eva atra bhavati .
taṃ cet, āyuṣmantaḥ, bhikṣuṃ pare ākrośanti paribhāṣante roṣayanti viheṭhayanti, saḥ evaṃ prajānāti — utpannā khalu me iyaṃ śrotrasamsparśajā duḥkhā vedanā . sā ca khalu pratītya, na apratītya . kiṃ pratītya ? sparśaṃ pratītya . saḥ sparśaḥ anityaḥ iti paśyati, vedanā anityā iti paśyati, saṃjñā anityā iti paśyati, saṃskārāḥ anityāḥ iti paśyati, vijñānam anityam iti paśyati . tasya dhātvalambanam eva cittaṃ praskandati prasīdati saṃtiṣṭhate adhimucyate .
taṃ cet, āyuṣmantaḥ, bhikṣuṃ pare aniṣṭaiḥ akāntaiḥ amanojñaiḥ samudācaranti — pāṇisaṃsparśena api leṣṭusaṃsparśena api daṇḍasaṃsparśena api śastrasaṃsparśena api . saḥ evaṃ prajānāti — tathābhūtaḥ khalu ayaṃ kāyaḥ yathābhūtasmin kāye pāṇisaṃsparśāḥ api krāmanti, leṣṭusaṃsparśāḥ api krāmanti, daṇḍasaṃsparśāḥ api krāmanti, śastrasaṃsparśāḥ api krāmanti . uktaṃ khalu punar etat bhagavatā krakacopamāvāde —
ubhayatodaṇḍakena ca api, bhikṣavaḥ, krakacena corāḥ avacarakāḥ aṅgapratyaṅgāni avakṛnteyuḥ, tatra api yaḥ manaḥ praduṣyāt na me saḥ tena śāsanakaraḥ iti . ārabdhaṃ khalu punaḥ me vīryaṃ bhaviṣyati asamlīnam, upasthitā smṛtiḥ asammūḍhā, praśrabdhakāyaḥ asaṃrabdhaḥ, samāhitaṃ cittam ekāgram . kāmam idānīm asmin kāye pāṇisaṃsparśāḥ api krāmantu, leṣṭusaṃsparśāḥ api krāmantu, daṇḍasaṃsparśāḥ api krāmantu, śastrasaṃsparśāḥ api krāmantu, kriyate hi idaṃ buddhānāṃ śāsanam iti .
tasya cet, āyuṣmantaḥ, bhikṣoḥ evaṃ buddham anusmarataḥ evaṃ dharmam anusmarataḥ evaṃ saṃgham anusmarataḥ upekṣā kuśalaniśritā na saṃtiṣṭhate . saḥ tena saṃvijate saṃvegam āpadyate — alābhāḥ vata me, na vata me lābhāḥ ; durlabdhaṃ vata me, na vata me sulabdham, yasya me evaṃ buddham anusmarataḥ, evaṃ dharmam anusmarataḥ, evaṃ saṃgham anusmarataḥ, upekṣā kuśalaniśritā na saṃtiṣṭhate iti . tadyathā api, āyuṣmantaḥ, snuṣā śvaśuraṃ dṛṣṭvā saṃvijate saṃvegam āpadyate ; evam eva khalu, āyuṣmantaḥ, tasya cet bhikṣoḥ evaṃ buddham anusmarataḥ, evaṃ dharmam anusmarataḥ, evaṃ saṃgham anusmarataḥ, upekṣā kuśalaniśritā na saṃtiṣṭhate, saḥ tena saṃvijate saṃvegam āpadyate — alābhāḥ vata me, na vata me lābhāḥ ; durlabdhaṃ vata me, na vata me sulabdham, yasya me evaṃ buddham anusmarataḥ evaṃ dharmam anusmarataḥ, evaṃ saṃgham anusmarataḥ, upekṣā kuśalaniśritā na saṃtiṣṭhate iti . tasya cet, āyuṣmantaḥ, bhikṣoḥ evaṃ buddham anusmarataḥ, evaṃ dharmam anusmarataḥ, evaṃ saṃgham anusmarataḥ upekṣā kuśalaniśritā saṃtiṣṭhate, saḥ tena āttamanāḥ bhavati . etāvatā api khalu, āyuṣmantaḥ, bhikṣoḥ bahukṛtaṃ bhavati .
katamā ca, āyuṣmantaḥ, abdhātuḥ ? abdhātuḥ syāt ādhyātmikī, syāt bāhirā . katamā ca, āyuṣmantaḥ, ādhyātmikī abdhātuḥ ? yad adhyātmaṃ pratyātmam āpas apgatam upādinnam, tadyathā — pittaṃ śleṣmā pūyaḥ lohitaṃ svedaḥ medas aśru vasā kheṭaḥ śiṅghāṇikā lasikā mūtram, yad vā punar anyad api kiṃcit adhyātmaṃ pratyātmam āpas apgatam upādinnam — iyam ucyate, āyuṣmantaḥ, ādhyātmikī abdhātuḥ . yā ca eva khalu punar ādhyātmikī abdhātuḥ yā ca bāhirā abdhātuḥ, abdhātuḥ eva eṣā . tad na etat mama, na eṣaḥ aham asmi, na me eṣaḥ ātmā iti evam etat yathābhūtaṃ samyakprajñayā draṣṭavyam . evam etat yathābhūtaṃ samyakprajñayā dṛṣṭvā abdhātuyāḥ nirvidyate, abdhātuyāḥ cittaṃ virājayati .
bhavati khalu saḥ, āyuṣmantaḥ, samayaḥ yad bāhirā abdhātuḥ prakupyati . sā grāmam api vahati, nigamam api vahati, nagaram api vahati, janapadam api vahati, janapadapradeśam api vahati . bhavati khalu saḥ, āyuṣmantaḥ, samayaḥ yad mahāsamudre yojanaśatikāni api udakāni avagacchanti, dviyojanaśatikāni api udakāni avagacchanti, triyojanaśatikāni api udakāni avagacchanti, caturyojanaśatikāni api udakāni avagacchanti, pañcayojanaśatikāni api udakāni avagacchanti, ṣaḍyojanaśatikāni api udakāni avagacchanti, saptayojanaśatikāni api udakāni avagacchanti . bhavati khalu saḥ, āyuṣmantaḥ, samayaḥ yad mahāsamudre saptatālam api udakaṃ saṃtiṣṭhate, ṣaṭtālam api udakaṃ saṃtiṣṭhate, pañcatālam api udakaṃ saṃtiṣṭhate, catustālam api udakaṃ saṃtiṣṭhate, tritālam api udakaṃ saṃtiṣṭhate, dvitālam api udakaṃ saṃtiṣṭhate, tālamātram api udakaṃ saṃtiṣṭhate . bhavati khalu saḥ, āyuṣmantaḥ, samayaḥ yad mahāsamudre saptapauruṣam api udakaṃ saṃtiṣṭhate, ṣaṭpauruṣam api udakaṃ saṃtiṣṭhate, pañcapauruṣam api udakaṃ saṃtiṣṭhate, catuṣpauruṣam api udakaṃ saṃtiṣṭhate, tripauruṣam api udakaṃ saṃtiṣṭhate, dvipauruṣam api udakaṃ saṃtiṣṭhate, pauruṣamātram api udakaṃ saṃtiṣṭhate . bhavati khalu saḥ, āyuṣmantaḥ, samayaḥ yad mahāsamudre ardhapauruṣam api udakaṃ saṃtiṣṭhate, kaṭimātram api udakaṃ saṃtiṣṭhate, jānukamātram api udakaṃ saṃtiṣṭhate, gulphakamātram api udakaṃ saṃtiṣṭhate . bhavati khalu saḥ, āyuṣmantaḥ, samayaḥ, yad mahāsamudre aṅguliparvasecanamātram api udakaṃ na bhavati . tasyāḥ hi nāma, āyuṣmantaḥ, bāhirāyāḥ abdhātuyāḥ tāvat mahallikāyāḥ anityatā prajñāsyate, kṣayadharmatā prajñāsyate, vyayadharmatā prajñāsyate, vipariṇāmadharmatā prajñāsyate . kiṃ punar asya mātrāsthitasya kāyasya tṛṣṇopāttasya aham iti vā mama iti vā asmi iti vā ? atha khalu asya na uta eva atra bhavati … tasya cet, āyuṣmantaḥ, bhikṣoḥ evaṃ buddham anusmarataḥ, evaṃ dharmam anusmarataḥ, evaṃ saṃgham anusmarataḥ upekṣā kuśalaniśritā saṃtiṣṭhate . saḥ tena āttamanāḥ bhavati . etāvatā api khalu, āyuṣmantaḥ, bhikṣoḥ bahukṛtaṃ bhavati .
katamā ca, āyuṣmantaḥ, tejodhātuḥ ? tejodhātuḥ syāt ādhyātmikī, syāt bāhirā . katamā ca, āyuṣmantaḥ, ādhyātmikī tejodhātuḥ ? yad adhyātmaṃ pratyātmaṃ tejas tejogatam upādinnam, tadyathā — yena ca saṃtapyate, yena ca jīryate, yena ca paridahyate, yena ca aśitapītakhāditāsvāditaṃ samyak pariṇāmaṃ gacchati, yad vā punar anyad api kiṃcit adhyātmaṃ pratyātmaṃ tejas tejogatam upādinnam — iyam ucyate, āyuṣmantaḥ, ādhyātmikī tejodhātuḥ . yā ca eva khalu punar ādhyātmikī tejodhātuḥ yā ca bāhirā tejodhātuḥ, tejodhātuḥ eva eṣā . tad na etat mama, na eṣaḥ aham asmi, na me eṣaḥ ātmā iti evam etat yathābhūtaṃ samyakprajñayā draṣṭavyam . evam etat yathābhūtaṃ samyakprajñayā dṛṣṭvā tejodhātuyāḥ nirvidyate, tejodhātuyāḥ cittaṃ virājayati .

tadyathā api, āyuṣmantaḥ, kāṣṭhaṃ ca pratītya vallīṃ ca pratītya tṛṇaṃ ca pratītya mṛttikāṃ ca pratītya ākāśaḥ parivāritaḥ agāram iti eva saṃjñāṃ gacchati ; evam eva khalu, āyuṣmantaḥ, asthi ca pratītya snāyuṃ ca pratītya māṃsaṃ ca pratītya carma ca pratītya ākāśaḥ parivāritaḥ rūpam iti eva saṃjñāṃ gacchati .
ādhyātmikaṃ ca eva, āyuṣmantaḥ, cakṣuḥ aparibhinnaṃ bhavati, bāhirāḥ ca rūpāḥ na āpātham āgacchanti, no ca tajjaḥ samanvāhāraḥ bhavati, na eva tāvat tajjasya vijñānabhāgasya prādurbhāvaḥ bhavati . ādhyātmikaṃ ca eva, āyuṣmantaḥ, cakṣuḥ aparibhinnaṃ bhavati bāhirāḥ ca rūpāḥ āpātham āgacchanti, no ca tajjaḥ samanvāhāraḥ bhavati, na eva tāvat tajjasya vijñānabhāgasya prādurbhāvaḥ bhavati . yataḥ ca khalu, āyuṣmantaḥ, ādhyātmikaṃ ca eva cakṣuḥ aparibhinnaṃ bhavati, bāhirāḥ ca rūpāḥ āpātham āgacchanti, tajjaḥ ca samanvāhāraḥ bhavati . evaṃ tajjasya vijñānabhāgasya prādurbhāvaḥ bhavati .
yat tathābhūtasya rūpaṃ tad rūpopādānaskandhe saṃgrahaṃ gacchati, yā tathābhūtasya vedanā sā vedanopādānaskandhe saṃgrahaṃ gacchati, yā tathābhūtasya saṃjñā sā saṃjñopādānaskandhe saṃgrahaṃ gacchati, ye tathābhūtasya saṃskārāḥ te saṃskāropādānaskandhe saṃgrahaṃ gacchanti, yat tathābhūtasya vijñānaṃ tad vijñānopādānaskandhe saṃgrahaṃ gacchati .
saḥ evaṃ prajānāti — evam hi kira eṣāṃ pañcānām upādānaskandhānāṃ saṃgrahaḥ saṃnipātaḥ samavāyaḥ bhavati . uktaṃ khalu punar etat bhagavatā — yaḥ pratītyasamutpādaṃ paśyati saḥ dharmaṃ paśyati ; yaḥ dharmaṃ paśyati saḥ pratītyasamutpādaṃ paśyati iti . pratītyasamutpannāḥ khalu punar ime yad idaṃ pañcopādānaskandhāḥ . yaḥ imeṣu pañcasu upādānaskandheṣu chandaḥ ālayaḥ anunayaḥ adhyavasānaṃ saḥ duḥkhasamudayaḥ . yaḥ imeṣu pañcasu upādānaskandheṣu chandarāgavinayaḥ chandarāgaprahānaṃ saḥ duḥkhanirodhaḥ iti . etāvatā api khalu, āyuṣmantaḥ, bhikṣoḥ bahukṛtaṃ bhavati .
ādhyātmikaṃ ca eva, āyuṣmantaḥ, śrotram aparibhinnaṃ bhavati … ghrāṇam aparibhinnaṃ bhavati … jihvā aparibhinnā bhavati … kāyaḥ aparibhinnaḥ bhavati … manaḥ aparibhinnaṃ bhavati, bāhirāḥ ca dharmāḥ na āpātham āgacchanti no ca tajjaḥ samanvāhāraḥ bhavati, na eva tāvat tajjasya vijñānabhāgasya prādurbhāvaḥ bhavati .
ādhyātmikaḥ ca eva, āyuṣmantaḥ, manaḥ aparibhinnaṃ bhavati, bāhirāḥ ca dharmāḥ āpātham āgacchanti, no ca tajjaḥ samanvāhāraḥ bhavati, na eva tāvat tajjasya vijñānabhāgasya prādurbhāvaḥ bhavati . yataḥ ca khalu, āyuṣmantaḥ, ādhyātmikaḥ ca eva manaḥ aparibhinnaṃ bhavati, bāhirāḥ ca dharmāḥ āpātham āgacchanti, tajjaḥ ca samanvāhāraḥ bhavati, evaṃ tajjasya vijñānabhāgasya prādurbhāvaḥ bhavati .
yat tathābhūtasya rūpaṃ tad rūpopādānaskandhe saṃgrahaṃ gacchati, yā tathābhūtasya vedanā sā vedanopādānaskandhe saṃgrahaṃ gacchati, yā tathābhūtasya saṃjñā sā saṃjñopādānaskandhe saṃgrahaṃ gacchati, ye tathābhūtasya saṃskārāḥ te saṃskāropādānaskandhe saṃgrahaṃ gacchanti, yat tathābhūtasya vijñānaṃ tad vijñānopādānaskandhe saṃgrahaṃ gacchati . saḥ evaṃ prajānāti — evam hi kira eṣāṃ pañcānām upādānaskandhānāṃ saṃgrahaḥ saṃnipātaḥ samavāyaḥ bhavati .
