evaṃ mayā śrutam — ekasmin samaye bhagavān rājagṛhe viharati sma gṛdhrakūṭe parvate aciraprakrānte devadatte . tatra khalu bhagavān devadattam ārabhya bhikṣūn āmantrayata —

iha, bhikṣavaḥ, kaścit kulaputraḥ śraddhayā agārāt anagārikāṃ pravrajitaḥ bhavati — avatīrṇaḥ asmi jātyā jarayā maraṇena śokaiḥ paridevaiḥ duḥkhaiḥ daurmanasyaiḥ upāyāsaiḥ, duḥkhāvatīrṇaḥ duḥkhaparetaḥ, api eva nāma asya kevalasya duḥkhaskandhasya antakriyā prajñāyeta iti . saḥ evaṃ pravrajitaḥ samānaḥ lābhasatkāraślokam abhinirvartayati . saḥ tena lābhasatkāraślokena āttamanāḥ bhavati paripūrṇasaṃkalpaḥ . saḥ tena lābhasatkāraślokena ātmānam utkarṣayati paraṃ avamanyate — aham asmi lābhasatkāraślokavān, ime punaḥ anye bhikṣavaḥ aprajñātāḥ alpeśākhyāḥ iti . saḥ tena lābhasatkāraślokena mādyati pramādyati pramādam āpadyate, pramattaḥ samānaḥ duḥkhaṃ viharati .

tadyathā api, bhikṣavaḥ, puruṣaḥ sārārthikaḥ sāragaveṣī sāraparyeṣaṇāṃ caran mahataḥ vṛkṣasya tiṣṭhataḥ sāravataḥ atikramya eva sāram atikramya phalguṃ atikramya tvacam atikramya parpaṭikām, śākhāpalāśam chittvā ādāya prakrāmet sāram iti manyamānaḥ . tam enaṃ cakṣuṣmān puruṣaḥ dṛṣṭvā evaṃ vadet — na vata ayaṃ bhavān puruṣaḥ ajñāsīt sāram, na ajñāsīt phalguṃ, na ajñāsīt tvacam, na ajñāsīt parpaṭikām, na ajñāsīt śākhāpalāśam . tathā hi ayaṃ bhavān puruṣaḥ sārārthikaḥ sāragaveṣī sāraparyeṣaṇāṃ caran mahataḥ vṛkṣasya tiṣṭhataḥ sāravataḥ atikramya eva sāram atikramya phalguṃ atikramya tvacam atikramya parpaṭikām, śākhāpalāśam chittvā ādāya prakrāntaḥ sāram iti manyamānaḥ . yat ca asya sāreṇa sārakaraṇīyaṃ tat ca asya arthaṃ na anubhaviṣyati iti .

evam eva khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, iha kaścit kulaputraḥ śraddhayā agārāt anagārikāṃ pravrajitaḥ bhavati — avatīrṇaḥ asmi jātyā jarayā maraṇena śokaiḥ paridevaiḥ duḥkhaiḥ daurmanasyaiḥ upāyāsaiḥ, duḥkhāvatīrṇaḥ duḥkhaparetaḥ, api eva nāma asya kevalasya duḥkhaskandhasya antakriyā prajñāyeta iti . saḥ evaṃ pravrajitaḥ samānaḥ lābhasatkāraślokam abhinirvartayati . saḥ tena lābhasatkāraślokena na āttamanāḥ bhavati, na paripūrṇasaṃkalpaḥ . saḥ tena lābhasatkāraślokena na ātmānam utkarṣayati, na paraṃ avamanyate . saḥ tena lābhasatkāraślokena na mādyati na pramādyati na pramādam āpadyate, apramattaḥ samānaḥ śīlasaṃpadām ārādhayati . saḥ tayā śīlasaṃpadayā āttamanāḥ bhavati, no ca khalu paripūrṇasaṃkalpaḥ . saḥ tayā śīlasaṃpadayā na ātmānam utkarṣayati, na paraṃ avamanyate . saḥ tayā śīlasaṃpadayā na mādyati na pramādyati na pramādam āpadyate, apramattaḥ samānaḥ samādhisaṃpadām ārādhayati . saḥ tayā samādhisaṃpadayā āttamanāḥ bhavati, no ca khalu paripūrṇasaṃkalpaḥ . saḥ tayā samādhisaṃpadayā na ātmānam utkarṣayati, na paraṃ avamanyate . saḥ tayā samādhisaṃpadayā na mādyati na pramādyati na pramādam āpadyate, apramattaḥ samānaḥ jñānadarśanam ārādhayati . saḥ tena jñānadarśanena āttamanāḥ bhavati, no ca khalu paripūrṇasaṃkalpaḥ . saḥ tena jñānadarśanena na ātmānam utkarṣayati, na paraṃ avamanyate . saḥ tena jñānadarśanena na mādyati na pramādyati na pramādam āpadyate, apramattaḥ samānaḥ asamayavimokṣam ārādhayati . asthānam etat, bhikṣavaḥ, anavakāśaḥ yat saḥ bhikṣuḥ tayā asamayavimuktyā parihīyeta .

iti khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, na idaṃ brahmacaryaṃ lābhasatkāraślokānuśaṃsam, na śīlasaṃpadānuśaṃsam, na samādhisaṃpadānuśaṃsam, na jñānadarśanānuśaṃsam . yā ca khalu iyam, bhikṣavaḥ, akopyā cetovimuktiḥ — etadartham idam, bhikṣavaḥ, brahmacaryam, etat sāram etat paryavasānam iti .

idam avocat bhagavān . āttamanasaḥ te bhikṣavaḥ bhagavataḥ bhāṣitam abhyanandiṣuḥ .
