evaṃ mayā śrutam — ekasmin samaye bhagavān śrāvastyāṃ viharati sma jetavane anāthapiṇḍadasya ārāme .

atha khalu piṅgalakautsaḥ brāhmaṇaḥ bhagavantam upasaṃcakrāma ; upasaṃkramya bhagavatā sārdhaṃ samamodata . saṃmodanīyāṃ kathāṃ smāraṇīyāṃ vyatisārya ekānte nyasīdat . ekānte niṣaṇṇaḥ khalu piṅgalakautsaḥ brāhmaṇaḥ bhagavantam etad avocat —

ye ime, bhoḥ gautama, śramaṇabrāhmaṇāḥ saṃghinaḥ gaṇinaḥ gaṇācāryāḥ jñātāḥ yaśasvinaḥ tīrthakarāḥ sādhusammatāḥ bahujanasya, tadyathā — pūraṇaḥ kāśyapaḥ, maskarī gośālaḥ, ajitaḥ keśakambalaḥ, kakudaḥ kātyāyanaḥ, sañjayaḥ vairaṭīputraḥ, nirgranthaḥ jñātṛputraḥ, sarve te svakayā pratijñayā abhyajñāsiṣuḥ, sarve eva na abhyajñāsiṣuḥ, utāho kecit abhyajñāsiṣuḥ kecit na abhyajñāsiṣuḥ iti ?

alam, brāhmaṇa, tiṣṭhatu etad — sarve te svakayā pratijñayā abhyajñāsiṣuḥ, sarve eva na abhyajñāsiṣuḥ, utāho kecit abhyajñāsiṣuḥ kecit na abhyajñāsiṣuḥ iti . dharmaṃ te, brāhmaṇa, deśayiṣyāmi, taṃ śṛṇu, sādhu manasi kuru, bhāṣiṣye iti .

evam, bhoḥ iti khalu piṅgalakautsaḥ brāhmaṇaḥ bhagavataḥ pratyaśrauṣīt . bhagavān etad avocat —

evam eva khalu, brāhmaṇa, iha kaścit pudgalaḥ śraddhayā agārāt anagārikāṃ pravrajitaḥ bhavati — avatīrṇaḥ asmi jātyā jarayā maraṇena śokaiḥ paridevaiḥ duḥkhaiḥ daurmanasyaiḥ upāyāsaiḥ, duḥkhāvatīrṇaḥ duḥkhaparetaḥ, api eva nāma asya kevalasya duḥkhaskandhasya antakriyā prajñāyeta iti . saḥ evaṃ pravrajitaḥ samānaḥ lābhasatkāraślokam abhinirvartayati . saḥ tena lābhasatkāraślokena āttamanāḥ bhavati paripūrṇasaṃkalpaḥ . saḥ tena lābhasatkāraślokena ātmānam utkarṣayati, paraṃ vamhayati — aham asmi lābhasatkāraślokavān, ime punaḥ anye bhikṣavaḥ aprajñātāḥ alpeśākhyāḥ iti . lābhasatkāraślokāt ca ye anye dharmāḥ uttaritarāḥ ca praṇītatarāḥ ca teṣāṃ dharmāṇāṃ sākṣātkriyāyai na chandaṃ janayati, na vyāyamate, avalīnavṛttikaḥ ca bhavati śāithilikaḥ . tadyathā api saḥ, brāhmaṇa, puruṣaḥ sārārthikaḥ sāragaveṣī sāraparyeṣaṇaṃ caramāṇaḥ mahataḥ vṛkṣasya tiṣṭhataḥ sāravataḥ atikramya eva sāram atikramya phalgum atikramya tvacam atikramya parpaṭikām, śākhāpalāśaṃ chittvā ādāya prakrāntaḥ sāram iti manyamānaḥ . yat ca asya sāreṇa sārakaraṇīyaṃ tat ca asya arthaṃ na anubhaviṣyati . tathopamam aham, brāhmaṇa, imaṃ pudgalaṃ vadāmi .

iha, brāhmaṇa, bhikṣuḥ vivicya eva kāmebhyaḥ vivicya akuśalebhyaḥ dharmebhyaḥ savitarkaṃ savicāraṃ vivekajaṃ prītisukhaṃ prathamaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya viharati . ayam api khalu, brāhmaṇa, dharmaḥ jñānadarśanāt uttaritaraḥ ca praṇītataraḥ ca .

punaḥ ca aparam, brāhmaṇa, bhikṣuḥ vitarkavicārāṇāṃ vyupaśamāt adhyātmaṃ saṃprasādanaṃ cetasaḥ ekāgrībhāvam avitarkam avicāraṃ samādhijaṃ prītisukhaṃ dvitīyaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya viharati . ayam api khalu, brāhmaṇa, dharmaḥ jñānadarśanāt uttaritaraḥ ca praṇītataraḥ ca .

punaḥ ca aparam, brāhmaṇa, bhikṣuḥ prītyāḥ ca virāgāt upekṣakaḥ ca viharati, smṛtimān ca saṃprajānan sukhaṃ ca kāyena pratisaṃvedayati, yat tad āryāḥ ācakṣate — upekṣakaḥ smṛtimān sukhavihārī iti tṛtīyaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya viharati . ayam api khalu, brāhmaṇa, dharmaḥ jñānadarśanāt uttaritaraḥ ca praṇītataraḥ ca .

tadyathā api saḥ, brāhmaṇa, puruṣaḥ sārārthikaḥ sāragaveṣī sāraparyeṣaṇaṃ caramāṇaḥ mahataḥ vṛkṣasya tiṣṭhataḥ sāravataḥ sāram eva chittvā ādāya prakrāntaḥ sāram iti jānan . yat ca asya sāreṇa sārakaraṇīyaṃ tat ca asya artham anubhaviṣyati . tathopamam aham, brāhmaṇa, imaṃ pudgalaṃ vadāmi .

iti khalu, brāhmaṇa, na idaṃ brahmacaryaṃ lābhasatkāraślokānuśaṃsam, na śīlasaṃpadānuśaṃsam, na samādhisaṃpadānuśaṃsam, na jñānadarśanānuśaṃsam . yā ca khalu iyam, brāhmaṇa, akopyā cetovimuktiḥ — etadartham idam, brāhmaṇa, brahmacaryam, etat sāram etat paryavasānam iti .

evam ukte, piṅgalakautsaḥ brāhmaṇaḥ bhagavantam etad avocat — atikrāntam, bhoḥ gautama, atikrāntam, bhoḥ gautama … upāsakaṃ māṃ bhavān gautamaḥ dhārayatu adyaprabhṛti prāṇopetaṃ śaraṇaṃ gatam iti .
