madhyamanikāyaḥ 31 - kṣudragośṛṅgasūtram

evaṃ mayā śrutam — ekasmin samaye bhagavān jñātike viharati sma iṣṭakāvasathe .

tena khalu punaḥ samayena āyuṣmān ca anuruddhaḥ āyuṣmān ca nandikaḥ āyuṣmān ca kimilaḥ gośṛṅgaśālavanadāve viharanti .

atha khalu bhagavān sāyāhnasamaye pratisaṃlayanāt utthitaḥ gośṛṅgaśālavanadāvam upasaṃcakrāma . adrākṣīt khalu dāyapālaḥ bhagavantaṃ dūratā eva āgacchantam . dṛṣṭvā bhagavantam etad avocat — mā, śramaṇa, imaṃ dāyaṃ prākṣīḥ . santi atra trayaḥ kulaputrāḥ ātmakāmarūpāḥ viharanti . mā teṣām aphāṣum akārṣīḥ iti .

aśrauṣīt khalu āyuṣmān anuruddhaḥ dāyapālasya bhagavatā sārdhaṃ mantrayamānasya . śrutvā dāyapālam etad avocat — mā, āyuṣman dāyapāla, bhagavantaṃ vāraya . śāstā naḥ bhagavān anuprāptaḥ iti . atha khalu āyuṣmān anuruddhaḥ āyuṣmantau nandikakimilau upasaṃcakrāma ; upasaṃkramya āyuṣmantau nandikakimilau etad avocat — atikramata āyuṣmantaḥ, atikramata āyuṣmantaḥ, śāstā naḥ bhagavān anuprāptaḥ iti .

atha khalu āyuṣmān ca anuruddhaḥ āyuṣmān ca nandikaḥ āyuṣmān ca kimilaḥ bhagavantaṃ pratyudgamya — ekaḥ bhagavataḥ pātracīvaraṃ pratigṛhṇāt, ekaḥ āsanaṃ prajñāpayat, ekaḥ pādodakam upasthāpayat . nyasīdat bhagavān prajñapte āsane . niṣadya khalu bhagavān pādau aprakṣālayat . te api khalu āyuṣmantaḥ bhagavantam abhivādya ekānte nyasīdan .

ekānte niṣaṇṇaṃ khalu āyuṣmantam anuruddhaṃ bhagavān etad avocat — kaccid vaḥ, anuruddhāḥ, kṣamanīyam, kaccid yāpanīyam, kaccid piṇḍakena na klāmatha iti ?

kṣamanīyam, bhagavan, yāpanīyam, bhagavan ; na ca vayam, bhadanta, piṇḍakena klāmāmaḥ iti .

kaccid punaḥ vaḥ, anuruddhāḥ, samagrāḥ saṃmodamānāḥ avivadamānāḥ kṣīrodakībhūtāḥ anyonyaṃ priyacakṣuṣā saṃpaśyantaḥ viharatha iti ?

tad gha vayam, bhadanta, samagrāḥ saṃmodamānāḥ avivadamānāḥ kṣīrodakībhūtāḥ anyonyaṃ priyacakṣuṣā saṃpaśyantaḥ viharāmaḥ iti .

yathā kathaṃ punaḥ yūyam, anuruddhāḥ, samagrāḥ saṃmodamānāḥ avivadamānāḥ kṣīrodakībhūtāḥ anyonyaṃ priyacakṣuṣā saṃpaśyantaḥ viharatha iti ?

iha mahyam, bhadanta, evaṃ bhavati — lābhāḥ bata me, sulabdhaṃ bata me, yaḥ aham evaṃrūpaiḥ sabrahmacāribhiḥ sārdhaṃ viharāmi iti . tasya mahyam, bhadanta, imeṣu āyuṣmatsu maitraṃ kāyakarma pratyupasthitam āviḥ ca eva rahaḥ ca ; maitraṃ vākkarma pratyupasthitam āviḥ ca eva rahaḥ ca ; maitraṃ manaḥkarma pratyupasthitam āviḥ ca eva rahaḥ ca . tasya mahyam, bhadanta, evaṃ bhavati — yat nūnam ahaṃ svakaṃ cittaṃ nikṣipya imeṣām eva āyuṣmatāṃ cittasya vaśena varteya iti . saḥ khalu aham, bhadanta, svakaṃ cittaṃ nikṣipya imeṣām eva āyuṣmatāṃ cittasya vaśena varte . nānā hi khalu naḥ, bhadanta, kāyāḥ ekam ca punaḥ manye cittam iti .

āyuṣmān api khalu nandikaḥ … āyuṣmān api khalu kimilaḥ bhagavantam etad avocat — mahyam api, bhadanta, evaṃ bhavati — lābhāḥ bata me, sulabdhaṃ bata me, yaḥ aham evaṃrūpaiḥ sabrahmacāribhiḥ sārdhaṃ viharāmi iti . tasya mahyam, bhadanta, imeṣu āyuṣmatsu maitraṃ kāyakarma pratyupasthitam āviḥ ca eva rahaḥ ca, maitraṃ vākkarma pratyupasthitam āviḥ ca eva rahaḥ ca, maitraṃ manaḥkarma pratyupasthitam āviḥ ca eva rahaḥ ca . tasya mahyam, bhadanta, evaṃ bhavati — yat nūnam ahaṃ svakaṃ cittaṃ nikṣipya imeṣām eva āyuṣmatāṃ cittasya vaśena varteya iti . saḥ khalu aham, bhadanta, svakaṃ cittaṃ nikṣipya imeṣām eva āyuṣmatāṃ cittasya vaśena varte . nānā hi khalu naḥ, bhadanta, kāyāḥ ekam ca punaḥ manye cittam iti . evaṃ khalu vayam, bhadanta, samagrāḥ saṃmodamānāḥ avivadamānāḥ kṣīrodakībhūtāḥ anyonyaṃ priyacakṣuṣā saṃpaśyantaḥ viharāmaḥ iti .

sādhu sādhu, anuruddhāḥ . kaccid punaḥ vaḥ, anuruddhāḥ, apramattāḥ ātāpinaḥ prahitātmānaḥ viharatha iti ?

tad gha vayam, bhadanta, apramattāḥ ātāpinaḥ prahitātmānaḥ viharāmaḥ iti .

yathā kathaṃ punaḥ yūyam, anuruddhāḥ, apramattāḥ ātāpinaḥ prahitātmānaḥ viharatha iti ?

iha, bhadanta, asmākaṃ yaḥ prathamaṃ grāmāt piṇḍāya pratikrāmati saḥ āsanāni prajñāpayati, pānīyaṃ paribhojanīyam upasthāpayati, avakārapātrīm upasthāpayati . yaḥ paścāt grāmāt piṇḍāya pratikrāmati, sacet bhavati bhuktāvaśeṣaḥ sacet ākāṅkṣati bhuṅkte, na cet ākāṅkṣati alpaharite vā chardayati, aprāṇake vā udake plāvayati . saḥ āsanāni pratisāmayati, pānīyaṃ paribhojanīyaṃ pratisāmayati, avakārapātrīṃ pratisāmayati, bhaktāgraṃ saṃmārṣṭi . yaḥ paśyati pānīyaghaṭaṃ vā paribhojanīyaghaṭaṃ vā varcaghaṭaṃ vā riktaṃ tucchaṃ saḥ upasthāpayati . sacet asya bhavati aviṣahyam, hastavikāreṇa dvitīyam āmantrya hastavilaṅghakena upasthāpayāmaḥ, na tu eva vayam, bhadanta, tatpratyayāt vācaṃ bhindāmaḥ . pañcāhikaṃ khalu punaḥ vayam, bhadanta, sarvarātrikaṃ dharmyayā kathayā saṃniṣīdāmaḥ . evaṃ khalu vayam, bhadanta, apramattāḥ ātāpinaḥ prahitātmānaḥ viharāmaḥ iti .

sādhu sādhu, anuruddhāḥ . asti punaḥ vaḥ, anuruddhāḥ, evam apramattānām ātāpināṃ prahitātmanāṃ viharatām uttari manuṣyadharmāt alamāryajñānadarśanaviśeṣaḥ adhigataḥ phāṣuvihāraḥ iti ?

kiṃ hi naḥ syāt, bhadanta . iha vayam, bhadanta, yāvat eva ākāṅkṣāmaḥ vivicya eva kāmebhyaḥ vivicya akuśalebhyaḥ dharmebhyaḥ savitarkaṃ savicāraṃ vivekajaṃ prītisukhaṃ prathamaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya viharāmaḥ . ayaṃ khalu naḥ, bhadanta, asmākam apramattānām ātāpināṃ prahitātmanāṃ viharatām uttari manuṣyadharmāt alamāryajñānadarśanaviśeṣaḥ adhigataḥ phāṣuvihāraḥ iti .

sādhu sādhu, anuruddhāḥ . etasya punaḥ vaḥ, anuruddhāḥ, vihārasya samatikramāya etasya vihārasya pratipraśrabdhyai asti anyaḥ uttari manuṣyadharmāt alamāryajñānadarśanaviśeṣaḥ adhigataḥ phāṣuvihāraḥ iti ?

kiṃ hi naḥ syāt, bhadanta . iha vayam, bhadanta, yāvat eva ākāṅkṣāmaḥ vitarkavicārāṇāṃ vyupaśamāt adhyātmaṃ saṃprasādanaṃ cetasaḥ ekāgrībhāvam avitarkam avicāraṃ samādhijaṃ prītisukhaṃ dvitīyaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya viharāmaḥ . etasya, bhadanta, vihārasya samatikramāya etasya vihārasya pratipraśrabdhyai ayam anyaḥ uttari manuṣyadharmāt alamāryajñānadarśanaviśeṣaḥ adhigataḥ phāṣuvihāraḥ iti .

sādhu sādhu, anuruddhāḥ . etasya punaḥ vaḥ, anuruddhāḥ, vihārasya samatikramāya etasya vihārasya pratipraśrabdhyai asti anyaḥ uttari manuṣyadharmāt alamāryajñānadarśanaviśeṣaḥ adhigataḥ phāṣuvihāraḥ iti ?

kiṃ hi naḥ syāt, bhadanta . iha vayam, bhadanta, yāvat eva ākāṅkṣāmaḥ prītyāḥ ca virāgāt upekṣakāḥ ca viharāmaḥ, smṛtimantaḥ ca saṃprajānānāḥ, sukhaṃ ca kāyena pratisaṃvedayāmaḥ, yat tad āryāḥ ācakṣate — upekṣakaḥ smṛtimān sukhavihārī iti tṛtīyaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya viharāmaḥ . etasya, bhadanta, vihārasya samatikramāya etasya vihārasya pratipraśrabdhyai ayam anyaḥ uttari manuṣyadharmāt alamāryajñānadarśanaviśeṣaḥ adhigataḥ phāṣuvihāraḥ iti .

sādhu sādhu, anuruddhāḥ . etasya punaḥ vaḥ, anuruddhāḥ, vihārasya samatikramāya etasya vihārasya pratipraśrabdhyai asti anyaḥ uttari manuṣyadharmāt alamāryajñānadarśanaviśeṣaḥ adhigataḥ phāṣuvihāraḥ iti ?

kiṃ hi naḥ syāt, bhadanta . iha vayam, bhadanta, yāvat eva ākāṅkṣāmaḥ sukhasya ca prahāṇāt duḥkhasya ca prahāṇāt pūrvam eva saumanasyadaurmanasyānām astaṃgamāt aduḥkhamasukham upekṣāsmṛtipāriśuddhiṃ caturthaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya viharāmaḥ . etasya, bhadanta, vihārasya samatikramāya etasya vihārasya pratipraśrabdhyai ayam anyaḥ uttari manuṣyadharmāt alamāryajñānadarśanaviśeṣaḥ adhigataḥ phāṣuvihāraḥ iti .

sādhu sādhu, anuruddhāḥ . etasya punaḥ vaḥ, anuruddhāḥ, vihārasya samatikramāya etasya vihārasya pratipraśrabdhyai asti anyaḥ uttari manuṣyadharmāt alamāryajñānadarśanaviśeṣaḥ adhigataḥ phāṣuvihāraḥ iti ?

kiṃ hi naḥ syāt, bhadanta . iha vayam, bhadanta, yāvat eva ākāṅkṣāmaḥ sarvaśaḥ rūpasaṃjñānāṃ samatikramāt pratighasaṃjñānām astaṃgamāt nānātvasaṃjñānām amanasikārāt anantaḥ ākāśaḥ iti ākāśānantyāyatanam upasaṃpadya viharāmaḥ . etasya, bhadanta, vihārasya samatikramāya etasya vihārasya pratipraśrabdhyai ayam anyaḥ uttari manuṣyadharmāt alamāryajñānadarśanaviśeṣaḥ adhigataḥ phāṣuvihāraḥ iti .

sādhu sādhu, anuruddhāḥ . etasya punaḥ vaḥ, anuruddhāḥ, vihārasya samatikramāya etasya vihārasya pratipraśrabdhyai asti anyaḥ uttari manuṣyadharmāt alamāryajñānadarśanaviśeṣaḥ adhigataḥ phāṣuvihāraḥ iti ?

kiṃ hi naḥ syāt, bhadanta . iha vayam, bhadanta, yāvat eva ākāṅkṣāmaḥ sarvaśaḥ ākāśānantyāyatanaṃ samatikramya anantaṃ vijñānam iti vijñānānantyāyatanam upasaṃpadya viharāmaḥ … sarvaśaḥ vijñānānantyāyatanaṃ samatikramya na asti kiṃcit iti ākiṃcanyāyatanam upasaṃpadya viharāmaḥ … sarvaśaḥ ākiṃcanyāyatanaṃ samatikramya naivasaṃjñānāsaṃjñāyatanam upasaṃpadya viharāmaḥ . etasya, bhadanta, vihārasya samatikramāya etasya vihārasya pratipraśrabdhyai ayam anyaḥ uttari manuṣyadharmāt alamāryajñānadarśanaviśeṣaḥ adhigataḥ phāṣuvihāraḥ iti .

sādhu sādhu, anuruddhāḥ . etasya punaḥ vaḥ, anuruddhāḥ, vihārasya samatikramāya etasya vihārasya pratipraśrabdhyai asti anyaḥ uttari manuṣyadharmāt alamāryajñānadarśanaviśeṣaḥ adhigataḥ phāṣuvihāraḥ iti ?

kiṃ hi naḥ syāt, bhadanta . iha vayam, bhadanta, yāvat eva ākāṅkṣāmaḥ sarvaśaḥ naivasaṃjñānāsaṃjñāyatanaṃ samatikramya saṃjñāveditanirodham upasaṃpadya viharāmaḥ, prajñayā ca naḥ dṛṣṭvā āsravāḥ parikṣīṇāḥ . etasya, bhadanta, vihārasya samatikramāya etasya vihārasya pratipraśrabdhyai ayam anyaḥ uttari manuṣyadharmāt alamāryajñānadarśanaviśeṣaḥ adhigataḥ phāṣuvihāraḥ . asmāt ca vayam, bhadanta, phāṣuvihārāt anyaṃ phāṣuvihāram uttaritaraṃ vā praṇītataraṃ vā na samanupaśyāmaḥ iti .

sādhu sādhu, anuruddhāḥ . asmāt phāṣuvihārāt uttaritaraḥ vā praṇītataraḥ vā phāṣuvihāraḥ na asti iti .

atha khalu bhagavān āyuṣmantaṃ ca anuruddham āyuṣmantaṃ ca nandikam āyuṣmantaṃ ca kimilaṃ dharmyayā kathayā saṃdarśya samādāpya samuttejya saṃpraharṣya utthāya āsanāt prākrāmat .

atha khalu āyuṣmān ca anuruddhaḥ āyuṣmān ca nandikaḥ āyuṣmān ca kimilaḥ bhagavantam anusaṃyāya tataḥ pratinivartya āyuṣmān ca nandikaḥ āyuṣmān ca kimilaḥ āyuṣmantam anuruddham etad avocetām — kiṃ nu khalu vayam āyuṣmataḥ anuruddhasya evam arocayāma : āsāṃ ca āsāṃ ca vihārasamāpattīnāṃ vayaṃ lābhinaḥ iti, yat naḥ āyuṣmān anuruddhaḥ bhagavataḥ saṃmukhāt yāvat āsravāṇāṃ kṣayāt prakāśayati iti ?

na khalu me āyuṣmantau evam arocayetām : āsāṃ ca āsāṃ ca vihārasamāpattīnāṃ vayaṃ lābhinaḥ iti, api ca me āyuṣmatoḥ cetasā cetaḥ parītya viditam : āsāṃ ca āsāṃ ca vihārasamāpattīnām imau āyuṣmantau lābhinau iti . devatāḥ api me etam artham arocayan : āsāṃ ca āsāṃ ca vihārasamāpattīnām ime āyuṣmantaḥ lābhinaḥ iti . tad enaṃ bhagavatā praśnābhipṛṣṭhena vyākṛtam iti .

atha khalu dīrghaḥ parajanaḥ yakṣaḥ bhagavantam upasaṃcakrāma ; upasaṃkramya bhagavantam abhivādya ekānte atiṣṭhat . ekānte sthitaḥ khalu dīrghaḥ parajanaḥ yakṣaḥ bhagavantam etad avocat — lābhāḥ bata, bhadanta, vṛjinām, sulabdhalābhāḥ vṛjiprajāyai, yatra tathāgataḥ viharati arhan samyaksambuddhaḥ, ime ca trayaḥ kulaputrāḥ — āyuṣmān ca anuruddhaḥ, āyuṣmān ca nandikaḥ, āyuṣmān ca kimilaḥ iti .

dīrghasya parajanasya yakṣasya śabdaṃ śrutvā bhaumāḥ devāḥ śabdam anuśrāvayan — lābhāḥ bata, bhoḥ, vṛjinām, sulabdhalābhāḥ vṛjiprajāyai, yatra tathāgataḥ viharati arhan samyaksambuddhaḥ, ime ca trayaḥ kulaputrāḥ — āyuṣmān ca anuruddhaḥ, āyuṣmān ca nandikaḥ, āyuṣmān ca kimilaḥ iti .

bhaumānāṃ devānāṃ śabdaṃ śrutvā cāturmahārājikāḥ devāḥ … trāyastriṃśāḥ devāḥ … yāmāḥ devāḥ … tuṣitāḥ devāḥ … nirmāṇaratayaḥ devāḥ … paranirmitavaśavartinaḥ devāḥ … brahmakāyikāḥ devāḥ śabdam anuśrāvayan — lābhāḥ bata, bhoḥ, vṛjinām, sulabdhalābhāḥ vṛjiprajāyai, yatra tathāgataḥ viharati arhan samyaksambuddhaḥ, ime ca trayaḥ kulaputrāḥ — āyuṣmān ca anuruddhaḥ, āyuṣmān ca nandikaḥ, āyuṣmān ca kimilaḥ iti .

iti ha te āyuṣmantaḥ tena kṣaṇena tena layena tena muhūrtena yāvat brahmalokāt viditāḥ abhavan .

evam etat, dīrgha, evam etat, dīrgha . yasmāt api, dīrgha, kulāt ete trayaḥ kulaputrāḥ agārāt anagārikaṃ pravrajitāḥ, tat cet api kulam etān trīn kulaputrān prasannacittam anusmaret, tasya api asya kulasya dīrgharātraṃ hitāya sukhāya . yasmāt api, dīrgha, kulaparivartāt ete trayaḥ kulaputrāḥ agārāt anagārikaṃ pravrajitāḥ, saḥ cet api kulaparivartaḥ etān trīn kulaputrān prasannacittaḥ anusmaret, tasya api asya kulaparivartasya dīrgharātraṃ hitāya sukhāya . yasmāt api, dīrgha, grāmāt ete trayaḥ kulaputrāḥ agārāt anagārikaṃ pravrajitāḥ, saḥ cet api grāmaḥ etān trīn kulaputrān prasannacittaḥ anusmaret, tasya api asya grāmasya dīrgharātraṃ hitāya sukhāya . yasmāt api, dīrgha, nigamāt ete trayaḥ kulaputrāḥ agārāt anagārikaṃ pravrajitāḥ, saḥ cet api nigamaḥ etān trīn kulaputrān prasannacittaḥ anusmaret, tasya api asya nigamasya dīrgharātraṃ hitāya sukhāya . yasmāt api, dīrgha, nagarāt ete trayaḥ kulaputrāḥ agārāt anagārikaṃ pravrajitāḥ, tat cet api nagaram etān trīn kulaputrān prasannacittam anusmaret, tasya api asya nagarasya dīrgharātraṃ hitāya sukhāya . yasmāt api, dīrgha, janapadāt ete trayaḥ kulaputrāḥ agārāt anagārikaṃ pravrajitāḥ, saḥ cet api janapadaḥ etān trīn kulaputrān prasannacittaḥ anusmaret, tasya api asya janapadasya dīrgharātraṃ hitāya sukhāya . sarve cet api, dīrgha, kṣatriyāḥ etān trīn kulaputrān prasannacittāḥ anusmareyuḥ, sarveṣām api asya kṣatriyāṇāṃ dīrgharātraṃ hitāya sukhāya . sarve cet api, dīrgha, brāhmaṇāḥ … sarve cet api, dīrgha, vaiśyāḥ … sarve cet api, dīrgha, śūdrāḥ etān trīn kulaputrān prasannacittāḥ anusmareyuḥ, sarveṣām api asya śūdrāṇāṃ dīrgharātraṃ hitāya sukhāya .

sadevakaḥ cet api, dīrgha, lokaḥ samārakaḥ sabrahmakaḥ saśramaṇabrāhmaṇī prajā sadevamanuṣyā etān trīn kulaputrān prasannacittā anusmaret, sadevakasya api asya lokasya samārakasya sabrahmakasya saśramaṇabrāhmaṇyāḥ prajāyāḥ sadevamanuṣyāyāḥ dīrgharātraṃ hitāya sukhāya .

paśya, dīrgha, yāvat ete trayaḥ kulaputrāḥ bahujanahitāya pratipannāḥ bahujanasukhāya lokānukampāyai, arthāya hitāya sukhāya devamanuṣyāṇām iti .

idam avocat bhagavān . āttamanāḥ dīrghaḥ parajanaḥ yakṣaḥ bhagavataḥ bhāṣitam abhyanandat iti .

kṣudragośṛṅgasūtraṃ niṣṭhitaṃ prathamam .
