madhyamanikāyaḥ 37 - kṣudratṛṣṇāsaṃkṣayasūtram

evaṃ mayā śrutam — ekasmin samaye bhagavān śrāvastyāṃ viharati sma pūrvārāme mṛgāramātṛprāsāde .

atha khalu śakraḥ devānāmindraḥ bhagavantam upasaṃcakrāma ; upasaṃkramya bhagavantam abhivādya ekānte atiṣṭhat . ekānte sthitaḥ khalu śakraḥ devānāmindraḥ bhagavantam etad avocat —

kiyatā nu khalu, bhadanta, bhikṣuḥ saṃkṣiptena tṛṣṇākṣayavimuktaḥ bhavati atyantaniṣṭhaḥ atyantayogakṣemī atyantabrahmacārī atyantaparyavasānaḥ śreṣṭhaḥ devamanuṣyāṇām iti ?

iha, devānāmindra, bhikṣoḥ śrutaṃ bhavati — sarve dharmāḥ na alam abhiniveśāya iti . evam ca etad, devānāmindra, bhikṣoḥ śrutaṃ bhavati — sarve dharmāḥ na alam abhiniveśāya iti . saḥ sarvaṃ dharmam abhijānāti ; sarvaṃ dharmam abhijñāya sarvaṃ dharmaṃ parijānāti ; sarvaṃ dharmaṃ parijñāya yāṃ kāṃcit vedanāṃ vedayati — sukhaṃ vā duḥkhaṃ vā aduḥkhamasukhaṃ vā, saḥ tāsu vedanāsu anityānupaśyī viharati, virāgānupaśyī viharati, nirodhānupaśyī viharati, pratiniḥsargānupaśyī viharati . saḥ tāsu vedanāsu anityānupaśyī viharan, virāgānupaśyī viharan, nirodhānupaśyī viharan, pratiniḥsargānupaśyī viharan na kiṃcit loke upādatte . anupādadānaḥ na paritrasati, aparitrasan pratyātmakam eva parinirvāti — kṣīṇā jātiḥ, uṣitaṃ brahmacaryam, kṛtaṃ karaṇīyam, na aparam itthatvāya iti prajānāti . etāvatā khalu, devānāmindra, bhikṣuḥ saṃkṣiptena tṛṣṇākṣayavimuktaḥ bhavati atyantaniṣṭhaḥ atyantayogakṣemī atyantabrahmacārī atyantaparyavasānaḥ śreṣṭhaḥ devamanuṣyāṇām iti .

atha khalu śakraḥ devānāmindraḥ bhagavataḥ bhāṣitam abhinandya anumudya bhagavantam abhivādya pradakṣiṇaṃ kṛtvā tatra eva antaradhāt .

tena khalu punaḥ samayena āyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyanaḥ bhagavataḥ avidūre niṣaṇṇaḥ bhavati . atha khalu āyuṣmataḥ mahāmaudgalyāyanasya etad abhūt — kiṃ nu khalu saḥ yakṣaḥ bhagavataḥ bhāṣitam abhisametya anumuditaḥ utāho na ; yat nūnam ahaṃ taṃ yakṣaṃ jānīyām — yadi vā saḥ yakṣaḥ bhagavataḥ bhāṣitam abhisametya anumuditaḥ yadi vā na iti ?

atha khalu āyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyanaḥ — tadyathā api nāma balavān puruṣaḥ samiñjitāṃ vā bāhuṃ prasārayet, prasāritāṃ vā bāhuṃ samiñjayet ; evam eva — pūrvārāme mṛgāramātṛprāsāde antarhitaḥ deveṣu trāyastriṃśeṣu prādurabhūt . tena khalu punaḥ samayena śakraḥ devānāmindraḥ ekapuṇḍarīke udyāne divyaiḥ pañcabhiḥ tūryaśataiḥ samarpitaḥ samaṅgībhūtaḥ paricārayati .

adrākṣīt khalu śakraḥ devānāmindraḥ āyuṣmantaṃ mahāmaudgalyāyanaṃ dūrataḥ eva āgacchantam . dṛṣṭvā tāni divyāni pañca tūryaśatāni pratipraṇāmya āyuṣmantaṃ mahāmaudgalyāyanam upasaṃcakrāma ; upasaṃkramya āyuṣmantaṃ mahāmaudgalyāyanam etad avocat — ehi khalu, mārṣa maudgalyāyana, svāgatam, mārṣa maudgalyāyana . cirasyāṃ khalu, mārṣa maudgalyāyana, imaṃ paryāyam akārṣīḥ yad idam ihāgamanāya . niṣīda, mārṣa maudgalyāyana, idam āsanaṃ prajñaptam iti . nyaṣīdat khalu āyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyanaḥ prajñapte āsane . śakraḥ api khalu devānāmindraḥ anyataraṃ nīcam āsanaṃ gṛhītvā ekānte nyaṣīdat .

ekānte niṣaṇṇaṃ khalu śakraṃ devānāmindram āyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyanaḥ etad avocat — yathā kathaṃ punaḥ khalu, kauśika, bhagavān saṃkṣiptena tṛṣṇākṣayavimuktim abhāṣata ? sādhu vayam api etasyāḥ kathāyāḥ bhāginaḥ syāma śravaṇāya iti .

vayaṃ khalu, mārṣa maudgalyāyana, bahukṛtyāḥ bahukaraṇīyāḥ — api eva svakena karaṇīyena, api ca devānām eva trāyastriṃśānāṃ karaṇīyena . api ca, mārṣa maudgalyāyana, suśrutam eva bhavati sugṛhītaṃ sumanasikṛtaṃ sūpadhāritam, yat naḥ kṣipram eva antardhīyate . bhūtapūrvam, mārṣa maudgalyāyana, devāsurasaṃgrāmaḥ samupavyūḍhaḥ abhūt . tasmin khalu punaḥ, mārṣa maudgalyāyana, saṃgrāme devāḥ ajayan, asurāḥ parājayan . saḥ khalu aham, mārṣa maudgalyāyana, taṃ saṃgrāmam abhivijitya vijitasaṃgrāmaḥ tataḥ pratinivṛtya vaijayantaṃ nāma prāsādaṃ māpayām āsam . vaijayantasya khalu, mārṣa maudgalyāyana, prāsādasya ekaśataṃ niryūham . ekaikasmin niryūhe sapta sapta kūṭāgāraśatāni . ekaikasmin kūṭāgāre sapta sapta apsarasaḥ . ekaikasyāḥ apsarasaḥ sapta sapta paricārikāḥ . iccheḥ nu tvam, mārṣa maudgalyāyana, vaijayantasya prāsādasya rāmaṇīyakaṃ draṣṭum iti ? adhivāsasi khalu āyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyanaḥ tūṣṇībhāvena .

atha khalu śakraḥ ca devānāmindraḥ vaiśravaṇaḥ ca mahārājaḥ āyuṣmantaṃ mahāmaudgalyāyanaṃ puraskṛtya vaijayantaṃ prāsādam upasaṃcakramuḥ . adrākṣuḥ khalu śakrasya devānāmindrasya paricārikāḥ āyuṣmantaṃ mahāmaudgalyāyanaṃ dūrataḥ eva āgacchantam ; dṛṣṭvā auttapyānāḥ hrīyamāṇāḥ svakaṃ svakam apavarakaṃ prāvikṣan . tadyathā api nāma snuṣā śvaśuraṃ dṛṣṭvā auttapyati hrīyati ; evam eva śakrasya devānāmindrasya paricārikāḥ āyuṣmantaṃ mahāmaudgalyāyanaṃ dṛṣṭvā auttapyānāḥ hrīyamāṇāḥ svakaṃ svakam apavarakaṃ prāvikṣan .

atha khalu śakraḥ ca devānāmindraḥ vaiśravaṇaḥ ca mahārājaḥ āyuṣmantaṃ mahāmaudgalyāyanaṃ vaijayante prāsāde anucaṅkramayanti anuvicārayanti — idam api, mārṣa maudgalyāyana, paśya vaijayantasya prāsādasya rāmaṇīyakam ; idam api, mārṣa maudgalyāyana, paśya vaijayantasya prāsādasya rāmaṇīyakam iti .

śobhate idam āyuṣmataḥ kauśikasya, yathā tat pūrvaṃ kṛtapuṇyasya . manuṣyāḥ api kiṃcid eva rāmaṇīyakaṃ dṛṣṭvā evam āhuḥ — śobhate vata bhoḥ yathā devānāṃ trāyastriṃśānām iti . tat idam āyuṣmataḥ kauśikasya śobhate, yathā tat pūrvaṃ kṛtapuṇyasya iti .

atha khalu āyuṣmataḥ mahāmaudgalyāyanasya etad abhūt — atibāḍhaṃ khalu ayaṃ yakṣaḥ pramattaḥ viharati . yat nūnam aham imaṃ yakṣaṃ saṃvejayeyam iti .

atha khalu āyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyanaḥ tathārūpam ṛddhyabhisaṃskāram abhisaṃskṛtavān yathā vaijayantaṃ prāsādaṃ pādāṅguṣṭhakena saṃkampayām āsa sampakampayām āsa sampavyathayām āsa . atha khalu śakraḥ ca devānāmindraḥ, vaiśravaṇaḥ ca mahārājaḥ, devāḥ ca trāyastriṃśāḥ āścaryādbhutacittajātāḥ abhūvan — āścaryaṃ vata, bhoḥ, adbhutaṃ vata, bhoḥ . śramaṇasya maharddhikatā mahānubhāvatā, yatra hi nāma divyabhavanaṃ pādāṅguṣṭhakena saṃkampayiṣyati sampakampayiṣyati sampavyathayiṣyati iti .

atha khalu āyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyanaḥ śakraṃ devānāmindraṃ saṃvignaṃ lomahṛṣṭajātaṃ viditvā śakraṃ devānāmindram etad avocat — yathā kathaṃ punaḥ khalu, kauśika, bhagavān saṃkṣiptena tṛṣṇākṣayavimuktim abhāṣata ? sādhu vayam api etasyāḥ kathāyāḥ bhāginaḥ syāma śravaṇāya iti .

iha aham, mārṣa maudgalyāyana, bhagavantam upasaṃcakrāma ; upasaṃkramya bhagavantam abhivādya ekānte atiṣṭham . ekānte sthitaḥ khalu aham, mārṣa maudgalyāyana, bhagavantam etad avocam — kiyatā nu khalu, bhadanta, bhikṣuḥ saṃkṣiptena tṛṣṇākṣayavimuktaḥ bhavati atyantaniṣṭhaḥ atyantayogakṣemī atyantabrahmacārī atyantaparyavasānaḥ śreṣṭhaḥ devamanuṣyāṇām iti ?

atha khalu āyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyanaḥ śakrasya devānāmindrasya bhāṣitam abhinandya anumudya — tadyathā api nāma balavān puruṣaḥ samiñjitāṃ vā bāhuṃ prasārayet, prasāritāṃ vā bāhuṃ samiñjayet ; evam eva — deveṣu trāyastriṃśeṣu antarhitaḥ pūrvārāme mṛgāramātṛprāsāde prādurabhūt .

atha khalu śakrasya devānāmindrasya paricārikāḥ aciraprakrānte āyuṣmati mahāmaudgalyāyane śakraṃ devānāmindram etad avocan — eṣaḥ nu te, mārṣa, saḥ bhagavān śāstā iti ?

na khalu me, mārṣa, saḥ bhagavān śāstā . sabrahmacārī me eṣaḥ āyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyanaḥ iti .

lābhāḥ te, mārṣa, sulabdhaṃ te, mārṣa yasya te sabrahmacārī evaṃmaharddhikaḥ evaṃmahānubhāvaḥ . aho nūnaṃ te saḥ bhagavān śāstā iti .

atha khalu āyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyanaḥ bhagavantam upasaṃcakrāma ; upasaṃkramya bhagavantam abhivādya ekānte nyaṣīdat . ekānte niṣaṇṇaḥ khalu āyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyanaḥ bhagavantam etad avocat — abhijānāti nu, bhadanta, bhagavān abhūt jñātānyatarasya maheśākhyasya yakṣasya saṃkṣiptena tṛṣṇākṣayavimuktiṃ bhāṣitā iti ?

abhijānāmy aham, maudgalyāyana, iha śakraḥ devānāmindraḥ mām upasaṃcakrāma ; upasaṃkramya mām abhivādya ekānte atiṣṭhat . ekānte sthitaḥ khalu, maudgalyāyana, śakraḥ devānām indraḥ mām etad avocat — kiyatā nu khalu, bhadanta, bhikṣuḥ saṃkṣiptena tṛṣṇākṣayavimuktaḥ bhavati atyantaniṣṭhaḥ atyantayogakṣemī atyantabrahmacārī atyantaparyavasānaḥ śreṣṭhaḥ devamanuṣyāṇām iti .
