madhyamanikāyaḥ 38 - mahātṛṣṇāsaṃkṣayasūtram

evaṃ mayā śrutam — ekasmin samaye bhagavān śrāvastyāṃ viharati sma jetavane anāthapiṇḍadasya ārāme .

tena khalu punaḥ samayena sāteḥ nāma bhikṣoḥ kaivartaputrasya evaṃrūpaṃ pāpakaṃ dṛṣṭigataṃ utpannam abhūt — tathā ahaṃ bhagavatā dharmaṃ deśitam ājānāmi yathā tat eva idaṃ vijñānaṃ saṃdhāvati saṃsarati ananyat iti .

aśrauṣuḥ khalu saṃbahulāḥ bhikṣavaḥ — sāteḥ kila nāma bhikṣoḥ kaivartaputrasya evaṃrūpaṃ pāpakaṃ dṛṣṭigataṃ utpannam — tathā ahaṃ bhagavatā dharmaṃ deśitam ājānāmi yathā tat eva idaṃ vijñānaṃ saṃdhāvati saṃsarati ananyat iti . atha khalu te bhikṣavaḥ sātiṃ bhikṣuṃ kaivartaputram upasaṃcakramuḥ ; upasaṃkramya sātiṃ bhikṣuṃ kaivartaputram etad avocan — satyaṃ kila te, āyuṣman sāti, evaṃrūpaṃ pāpakaṃ dṛṣṭigataṃ utpannam — tathā ahaṃ bhagavatā dharmaṃ deśitam ājānāmi yathā tat eva idaṃ vijñānaṃ saṃdhāvati saṃsarati ananyat iti ?

evam batā khalu aham, āyuṣmantaḥ, bhagavatā dharmaṃ deśitam ājānāmi yathā tat eva idaṃ vijñānaṃ saṃdhāvati saṃsarati ananyat iti .

atha khalu te bhikṣavaḥ sātiṃ bhikṣuṃ kaivartaputram etasmāt pāpakāt dṛṣṭigatāt vivecayitukāmāḥ samanvayuñjan samanvagāhanta samanvabhāṣanta — mā evam, āyuṣman sāti, vocaḥ, mā bhagavantam abhyācakṣīḥ, na hi sādhu bhagavataḥ abhyākhyānam, na hi bhagavān evaṃ vadet . anekaparyāyena, āyuṣman sāti, pratītyasamutpannaṃ vijñānam uktaṃ bhagavatā, anyatra pratyayāt na asti vijñānasya saṃbhavaḥ iti .

evam api khalu sātiḥ bhikṣuḥ kaivartaputraḥ taiḥ bhikṣubhiḥ samanuyuñjyamānaḥ samanugāhyamānaḥ samanubhāṣyamānaḥ tat eva pāpakaṃ dṛṣṭigataṃ sthāmasā parāmṛśya abhiniviśya vyavaharati sma — evam batā khalu aham, āyuṣmantaḥ, bhagavatā dharmaṃ deśitam ājānāmi yathā tat eva idaṃ vijñānaṃ saṃdhāvati saṃsarati ananyat iti .

atha khalu bhagavān anyataraṃ bhikṣum āmantrayata — ehi tvaṃ bhikṣo, mama vacanena sātiṃ bhikṣuṃ kaivartaputram āmantraya — śāstā tvām, āyuṣman sāti, āmantrayate iti .

evam, bhadanta iti khalu saḥ bhikṣuḥ bhagavataḥ pratyaśrauṣīt sātim bhikṣuṃ kaivartaputram upasaṃcakrāma ; upasaṃkramya sātiṃ bhikṣuṃ kaivartaputram etad avocat — śāstā tvām, āyuṣman sāti, āmantrayate iti .

katamat tat, sāti, vijñānam iti ?

yaḥ ayam, bhadanta, vaktā vedayitā tatra tatra kalyāṇapāpakānāṃ karmaṇāṃ vipākaṃ pratisaṃvedayate iti .

kasya nu khalu nāma tvaṃ, moghapuruṣa, mayā evaṃ dharmaṃ deśitam ājānāsi ? na nu mayā, moghapuruṣa, anekaparyāyena pratītyasamutpannaṃ vijñānam uktam, anyatra pratyayāt na asti vijñānasya saṃbhavaḥ iti ? atha ca punaḥ tvaṃ, moghapuruṣa, ātmanā durgṛhītena asmān ca eva abhyācakṣīḥ, ātmānaṃ ca khanasi, bahu ca apuṇyaṃ prasavasi . tat hi te, moghapuruṣa, bhaviṣyati dīrgharātram ahitāya duḥkhāya iti .

atha khalu bhagavān bhikṣūn āmantrayata — tat kiṃ manyadhvam, bhikṣavaḥ, api nu ayaṃ sātiḥ bhikṣuḥ kaivartaputraḥ ūṣmīkṛtaḥ api asmin dharmavinaye iti ?

kiṃ hi syāt, bhadanta ? na u etad, bhadanta iti . evaṃ ukte, sātiḥ bhikṣuḥ kaivartaputraḥ tūṣṇīmbhūtaḥ maṅkubhūtaḥ srastaskandhaḥ adhomukhaḥ pradhyāyan apratibhānaḥ nyaṣīdat .

atha khalu bhagavān sātiṃ bhikṣuṃ kaivartaputraṃ tūṣṇīmbhūtaṃ maṅkubhūtaṃ srastaskandhaṃ adhomukhaṃ pradhyāyantam apratibhānaṃ viditvā sātiṃ bhikṣuṃ kaivartaputram etad avocat — prajñāsyase khalu tvaṃ, moghapuruṣa, etena svakena pāpakena dṛṣṭigatena . iha ahaṃ bhikṣūn pratiprakṣyāmi iti .

atha khalu bhagavān bhikṣūn āmantrayata — yūyam api me, bhikṣavaḥ, evaṃ dharmaṃ deśitam ājānītha yathā ayaṃ sātiḥ bhikṣuḥ kaivartaputraḥ ātmanā durgṛhītena asmān ca eva abhyācaṣṭe, ātmānaṃ ca khanati, bahu ca apuṇyaṃ prasavati iti ?

na u etad, bhadanta . anekaparyāyena hi naḥ, bhadanta, pratītyasamutpannaṃ vijñānam uktaṃ bhagavatā, anyatra pratyayāt na asti vijñānasya saṃbhavaḥ iti .

sādhu sādhu, bhikṣavaḥ . sādhu khalu me yūyam, bhikṣavaḥ, evaṃ dharmaṃ deśitam ājānītha . anekaparyāyena hi vaḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, pratītyasamutpannaṃ vijñānam uktaṃ mayā, anyatra pratyayāt na asti vijñānasya saṃbhavaḥ iti . atha ca punaḥ ayaṃ sātiḥ bhikṣuḥ kaivartaputraḥ ātmanā durgṛhītena asmān ca eva abhyācaṣṭe, ātmānaṃ ca khanati, bahu ca apuṇyaṃ prasavati . tat hi tasya moghapuruṣasya bhaviṣyati dīrgharātram ahitāya duḥkhāya .

yaṃ yat eva, bhikṣavaḥ, pratyayaṃ pratītya utpadyate vijñānam, tena tena eva vijñānam iti evaṃ saṃkhyāṃ gacchati . cakṣuḥ ca pratītya rūpaṃ ca utpadyate vijñānam, cakṣurvijñānam iti evaṃ saṃkhyāṃ gacchati ; śrotraṃ ca pratītya śabdaṃ ca utpadyate vijñānam, śrotravijñānam iti evaṃ saṃkhyāṃ gacchati ; ghrāṇaṃ ca pratītya gandhaṃ ca utpadyate vijñānam, ghrāṇavijñānam iti evaṃ saṃkhyāṃ gacchati ; jihvāṃ ca pratītya rasaṃ ca utpadyate vijñānam, jihvāvijñānam iti evaṃ saṃkhyāṃ gacchati ; kāyaṃ ca pratītya spraṣṭavyaṃ ca utpadyate vijñānam, kāyavijñānam iti evaṃ saṃkhyāṃ gacchati ; manaḥ ca pratītya dharmaṃ ca utpadyate vijñānam, manovijñānam iti evaṃ saṃkhyāṃ gacchati .

tadyathā api, bhikṣavaḥ, yaṃ yat eva pratyayaṃ pratītya agniḥ jvalati tena tena eva saṃkhyāṃ gacchati . kāṣṭhaṃ ca pratītya agniḥ jvalati, kāṣṭhāgniḥ iti evaṃ saṃkhyāṃ gacchati ; śakalaṃ ca pratītya agniḥ jvalati, śakalāgniḥ iti evaṃ saṃkhyāṃ gacchati ; tṛṇaṃ ca pratītya agniḥ jvalati, tṛṇāgniḥ iti evaṃ saṃkhyāṃ gacchati ; gomayaṃ ca pratītya agniḥ jvalati, gomayāgniḥ iti evaṃ saṃkhyāṃ gacchati ; tuṣaṃ ca pratītya agniḥ jvalati, tuṣāgniḥ iti evaṃ saṃkhyāṃ gacchati ; saṃkāraṃ ca pratītya agniḥ jvalati, saṃkārāgniḥ iti evaṃ saṃkhyāṃ gacchati .

evam eva khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, yaṃ yat eva pratyayaṃ pratītya utpadyate vijñānam, tena tena eva saṃkhyāṃ gacchati . cakṣuḥ ca pratītya rūpaṃ ca utpadyate vijñānam, cakṣurvijñānam iti evaṃ saṃkhyāṃ gacchati ; śrotraṃ ca pratītya śabdaṃ ca utpadyate vijñānam, śrotravijñānam iti evaṃ saṃkhyāṃ gacchati, ghrāṇaṃ ca pratītya gandhaṃ ca utpadyate vijñānam, ghrāṇavijñānam iti evaṃ saṃkhyāṃ gacchati, jihvāṃ ca pratītya rasaṃ ca utpadyate vijñānam, jihvāvijñānam iti evaṃ saṃkhyāṃ gacchati . kāyaṃ ca pratītya spraṣṭavyaṃ ca utpadyate vijñānam, kāyavijñānam iti evaṃ saṃkhyāṃ gacchati . manaḥ ca pratītya dharmaṃ ca utpadyate vijñānam, manovijñānam iti evaṃ saṃkhyāṃ gacchati .

tadāhārasaṃbhavam iti, bhikṣavaḥ, paśyatha iti ?

tadāhāranirodhāt yad bhūtam, tat nirodhadharmam iti, bhikṣavaḥ, paśyatha iti ?

evam, bhadanta .

bhūtam idaṃ na u svit iti, bhikṣavaḥ, kāṅkṣataḥ utpadyate vicikitsā iti ?

evam, bhadanta .

imāṃ cet yūyam, bhikṣavaḥ, dṛṣṭim evaṃ pariśuddhām evaṃ paryavadātām ālīyedhvaṃ kelāyedhvaṃ dhanāyedhvaṃ mamāyedhvam, api nu me yūyam, bhikṣavaḥ, kulyopamaṃ dharmaṃ deśitam ājānīdhvaṃ nistaraṇārthāya na u grahaṇārthāya iti ?

imāṃ cet yūyam, bhikṣavaḥ, dṛṣṭim evaṃ pariśuddhām evaṃ paryavadātāṃ na ālīyedhvaṃ na kelāyedhvaṃ na dhanāyedhvaṃ na mamāyedhvam, api nu me yūyam, bhikṣavaḥ, kulyopamaṃ dharmaṃ deśitam ājānīdhvaṃ nistaraṇārthāya na u grahaṇārthāya iti ?

evam, bhadanta .

catvāraḥ ime, bhikṣavaḥ, āhārāḥ bhūtānāṃ vā sattvānāṃ sthityai, saṃbhavaiṣiṇāṃ vā anugrahāya . katame catvāraḥ ? kavaḍīkāraḥ āhāraḥ audārikaḥ vā sūkṣmaḥ vā, sparśaḥ dvitīyaḥ, manaḥsaṃcetanā tṛtīyā, vijñānaṃ caturtham .

ime ca, bhikṣavaḥ, catvāraḥ āhārāḥ kiṃnidānāḥ kiṃsamudayāḥ kiṃjātikāḥ kiṃprabhavāḥ ? ime catvāraḥ āhārāḥ tṛṣṇānidānāḥ tṛṣṇāsamudayāḥ tṛṣṇājātikāḥ tṛṣṇāprabhavāḥ .

tṛṣṇā ca iyam, bhikṣavaḥ, kiṃnidānā kiṃsamudayā kiṃjātikā kiṃprabhavā ? tṛṣṇā vedanānidānā vedanāsamudayā vedanājātikā vedanāprabhavā .

vedanā ca iyam, bhikṣavaḥ, kiṃnidānā kiṃsamudayā kiṃjātikā kiṃprabhavā ? vedanā sparśanidānā sparśasamudayā sparśajātikā sparśaprabhavā .

sparśaḥ ca ayam, bhikṣavaḥ, kiṃnidānaḥ kiṃsamudayaḥ kiṃjātikaḥ kiṃprabhavaḥ ? sparśaḥ ṣaḍāyatananidānaḥ ṣaḍāyatanasamudayaḥ ṣaḍāyatanajātikaḥ ṣaḍāyatanaprabhavaḥ .

ṣaḍāyatanaṃ ca idam, bhikṣavaḥ, kiṃnidānaṃ kiṃsamudayaṃ kiṃjātikaṃ kiṃprabhavam ? ṣaḍāyatanaṃ nāmarūpanidānaṃ nāmarūpasamudayaṃ nāmarūpajātikaṃ nāmarūpaprabhavam .

nāmarūpaṃ ca idam, bhikṣavaḥ, kiṃnidānaṃ kiṃsamudayaṃ kiṃjātikaṃ kiṃprabhavam ? nāmarūpaṃ vijñānanidānaṃ vijñānasamudayaṃ vijñānajātikaṃ vijñānaprabhavam .

vijñānaṃ ca idam, bhikṣavaḥ, kiṃnidānaṃ kiṃsamudayaṃ kiṃjātikaṃ kiṃprabhavam ? vijñānaṃ saṃskāranidānaṃ saṃskārasamudayaṃ saṃskārajātikaṃ saṃskāraprabhavam .

saṃskārāḥ ca ime, bhikṣavaḥ, kiṃnidānāḥ kiṃsamudayāḥ kiṃjātikāḥ kiṃprabhavāḥ ? saṃskārāḥ avidyānidānāḥ avidyāsamudayāḥ avidyājātikāḥ avidyāprabhavāḥ .

iti khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, avidyāpratyayāḥ saṃskārāḥ, saṃskārapratyayaṃ vijñānam, vijñānapratyayaṃ nāmarūpam, nāmarūpapratyayaṃ ṣaḍāyatanam, ṣaḍāyatanapratyayaḥ sparśaḥ, sparśapratyayā vedanā, vedanāpratyayā tṛṣṇā, tṛṣṇāpratyayam upādānam, upādānapratyayaḥ bhavaḥ, bhavapratyayā jātiḥ, jātipratyayāḥ jarāmaraṇaṃ śokaparidevaduḥkhadaurmanasyopāyāsāḥ saṃbhavanti . evam etasya kevalasya duḥkhaskandhasya samudayaḥ bhavati .

jātipratyayaṃ jarāmaraṇam iti iti khalu punaḥ etad uktam ; jātipratyayaṃ nu khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, jarāmaraṇam, na u vā, kathaṃ vā atra bhavati iti ?

jātipratyayam, bhadanta, jarāmaraṇam ; evaṃ naḥ atra bhavati — jātipratyayaṃ jarāmaraṇam iti .

bhavapratyayā jātiḥ iti iti khalu punaḥ etad uktam ; bhavapratyayā nu khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, jātiḥ, na u vā, kathaṃ vā atra bhavati iti ? bhavapratyayā, bhadanta, jātiḥ ; evaṃ naḥ atra bhavati — bhavapratyayā jātiḥ iti .

upādānapratyayaḥ bhavaḥ iti iti khalu punaḥ etad uktam ; upādānapratyayaḥ nu khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, bhavaḥ, na u vā, kathaṃ vā atra bhavati iti ? upādānapratyayaḥ, bhadanta, bhavaḥ ; evaṃ naḥ atra bhavati — upādānapratyayaḥ bhavaḥ iti .

tṛṣṇāpratyayam upādānam iti iti khalu punaḥ etad uktam, tṛṣṇāpratyayaṃ nu khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, upādānam, na u vā, kathaṃ vā atra bhavati iti ? tṛṣṇāpratyayam, bhadanta, upādānam ; evaṃ naḥ atra bhavati — tṛṣṇāpratyayam upādānam iti .

vedanāpratyayā tṛṣṇā iti iti khalu punaḥ etad uktam ; vedanāpratyayā nu khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, tṛṣṇā, na u vā, kathaṃ vā atra bhavati iti ? vedanāpratyayā, bhadanta, tṛṣṇā ; evaṃ naḥ atra bhavati — vedanāpratyayā tṛṣṇā iti .

sparśapratyayā vedanā iti iti khalu punaḥ etad uktam ; sparśapratyayā nu khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, vedanā, na u vā, kathaṃ vā atra bhavati iti ? sparśapratyayā, bhadanta, vedanā ; evaṃ naḥ atra bhavati — sparśapratyayā vedanā iti .

ṣaḍāyatanapratyayaḥ sparśaḥ iti iti khalu punaḥ etad uktam ; ṣaḍāyatanapratyayaḥ nu khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, sparśaḥ, na u vā, kathaṃ vā atra bhavati iti ? ṣaḍāyatanapratyayaḥ, bhadanta, sparśaḥ ; evaṃ naḥ atra bhavati — ṣaḍāyatanapratyayaḥ sparśaḥ iti .

saḥ cakṣuṣā rūpaṃ dṛṣṭvā na nimittagrāhī bhavati na anuvyañjanagrāhī . yadvādhikaraṇam enaṃ cakṣurindriyam asaṃvṛtaṃ viharantam abhidhyādaurmanasyāḥ pāpakāḥ akuśalāḥ dharmāḥ anvāsraveyuḥ tasya saṃvarāya pratipadyate, rakṣati cakṣurindriyam, cakṣurindriye saṃvaram āpadyate .

saḥ abhikrānte pratikrānte saṃprajānakārī bhavati, ālokite vilokite saṃprajānakārī bhavati, samiñjite prasārite saṃprajānakārī bhavati, saṃghāṭīpātracīvaradhāraṇe saṃprajānakārī bhavati, aśite pīte khādite svādite saṃprajānakārī bhavati, uccāraprasrāvakarmani saṃprajānakārī bhavati, gate sthite niṣaṇṇe supte jāgarite bhāṣite tūṣṇīṃbhāve saṃprajānakārī bhavati .

saḥ anena ca āryeṇa śīlaskandhena samanvitaḥ, anayā ca āryayā saṃtuṣṭyā samanvitaḥ, anena ca āryeṇa indriyasaṃvareṇa samanvitaḥ, anena ca āryeṇa smṛtisaṃprajanyena samanvitaḥ, viviktaṃ śayanāsanaṃ bhajati — araṇyaṃ vṛkṣamūlaṃ parvataṃ kandaraṃ giriguhāṃ śmaśānaṃ vanaprastham abhyavakāśaṃ palālapuñjam .

saḥ paścādbhaktam piṇḍapātapratikrāntaḥ niṣīdati paryaṅkam ābhujya, ṛjuṃ kāyaṃ praṇidhāya, parimukhaṃ smṛtim upasthāpya . saḥ abhidhyāṃ loke prahāya vigatābhidhyena cetasā viharati, abhidhyāyāḥ cittaṃ pariśodhayati ; vyāpādapradoṣaṃ prahāya avyāpannacittaḥ viharati, sarvaprāṇabhūtahitānukampī, vyāpādapradoṣāt cittaṃ pariśodhayati ; styānamiddhaṃ prahāya vigatastyānamiddhaḥ viharati ālokasaṃjñī, smṛtimān saṃprajānan, styānamiddhāt cittaṃ pariśodhayati ; auddhatyakaukṛtyaṃ prahāya anuddhataḥ viharati adhyātmaṃ vyupaśāntacittaḥ, auddhatyakaukṛtyāt cittaṃ pariśodhayati ; vicikitsāṃ prahāya tīrṇavicikitsaḥ viharati akathaṃkathī kuśaleṣu dharmeṣu, vicikitsāyāḥ cittaṃ pariśodhayati .

saḥ imāni pañca nīvaraṇāni prahāya cetasaḥ upakleśān prajñāyāḥ durbalīkaraṇān, vivicya eva kāmebhyaḥ vivicya akuśalebhyaḥ dharmebhyaḥ savitarkaṃ savicāraṃ vivekajaṃ prītisukhaṃ prathamaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya viharati . punaḥ ca aparaṃ, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ vitarkavicārāṇāṃ vyupaśamāt adhyātmaṃ saṃprasādanaṃ cetasaḥ ekāgrībhāvam avitarkam avicāraṃ samādhijaṃ prītisukhaṃ dvitīyaṃ dhyānam … tṛtīyaṃ dhyānam … caturthaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya viharati .

saḥ evam anurodhavirodhaviprahīṇaḥ yāṃ kāṃcit vedanāṃ vedayate, sukhāṃ vā duḥkhāṃ vā aduḥkhāsukhāṃ vā, saḥ tāṃ vedanāṃ na abhinandati na abhivadati na adhyavasāya tiṣṭhati . tasya tāṃ vedanām anabhinandataḥ anabhivadataḥ anadhyavasāya tiṣṭhataḥ yā vedanāsu nandī sā nirudhyate . tasya nandīnirodhāt upādānanirodhaḥ, upādānanirodhāt bhavanirodhaḥ, bhavanirodhāt jātinirodhaḥ, jātinirodhāt jarāmaraṇaṃ śokaparidevaduḥkhadaurmanasyopāyāsāḥ nirudhyanti . evam etasya kevalasya duḥkhaskandhasya nirodhaḥ bhavati .

idam avocat bhagavān . āttamanasaḥ te bhikṣavaḥ bhagavataḥ bhāṣitam abhyanandiṣuḥ .

mahātṛṣṇāsaṃkṣayasūtraṃ niṣṭhitam aṣṭamam .
