evaṃ mayā śrutam — ekasmin samaye bhagavān śrāvastyāṃ viharati sma jetavane anāthapiṇḍadasya ārāme .

atha khalu āyuṣmān mahākauṣṭhikaḥ sāyāhnasamaye pratisaṃlayanāt utthitaḥ āyuṣmantaṃ śāriputram upasaṃcakrāma ; upasaṃkramya āyuṣmatā śāriputreṇa sārdhaṃ samamodata . saṃmodanīyāṃ kathāṃ smāraṇīyāṃ vyatisārya ekānte nyaṣīdat . ekānte niṣaṇṇaḥ khalu āyuṣmān mahākauṣṭhikaḥ āyuṣmantaṃ śāriputram etad avocat —

duṣprajñaḥ duṣprajñaḥ iti, āyuṣman, ucyate . kiyatā nu khalu, āyuṣman, duṣprajñaḥ iti ucyate iti ?

na prajānāti na prajānāti iti khalu, āyuṣman, tasmāt duṣprajñaḥ iti ucyate . kiṃ ca na prajānāti ? idaṃ duḥkham iti na prajānāti, ayaṃ duḥkhasamudayaḥ iti na prajānāti, ayaṃ duḥkhanirodhaḥ iti na prajānāti, iyaṃ duḥkhanirodhagāminī pratipad iti na prajānāti . na prajānāti na prajānāti iti khalu, āyuṣman, tasmāt duṣprajñaḥ iti ucyate iti .

sādhu āyuṣman iti khalu āyuṣmān mahākauṣṭhikaḥ āyuṣmataḥ śāriputrasya bhāṣitam abhinandya anumudya āyuṣmantaṃ śāriputram uttari praśnam apṛcchat —

prajñāvān prajñāvān iti, āyuṣman, ucyate . kiyatā nu khalu, āyuṣman, prajñāvān iti ucyate iti ?

saṃjānīte saṃjānīte iti khalu, āyuṣman, tasmāt saṃjñā iti ucyate . kiṃ ca saṃjānīte ? nīlam api saṃjānīte, pītam api saṃjānīte, lohitakam api saṃjānīte, avadātam api saṃjānīte . saṃjānīte saṃjānīte iti khalu, āyuṣman, tasmāt saṃjñā iti ucyate iti .

yā ca, āyuṣman, vedanā yā ca saṃjñā yat ca vijñānam — ime dharmāḥ saṃsṛṣṭāḥ utāho visaṃsṛṣṭāḥ ? labhyaṃ ca punar imeṣāṃ dharmāṇāṃ vinirbhujya vinirbhujya nānākaraṇaṃ prajñāpayitum iti ?

niḥsṛṣṭena, āyuṣman, pañcabhiḥ indriyaiḥ pariśuddhena manovijñānena anantaḥ ākāśaḥ iti ākāśānantyāyatanaṃ jñeyam, anantaṃ vijñānam iti vijñānānantyāyatanaṃ jñeyam, na asti kiṃcit iti ākiṃcanyāyatanaṃ jñeyam iti .

jñeyaṃ punar, āyuṣman, dharmaṃ kena prajānāti iti ?

jñeyaṃ khalu, āyuṣman, dharmaṃ prajñācakṣuṣā prajānāti iti .

prajñā punar, āyuṣman, kimarthiyā iti ?

prajñā khalu, āyuṣman, abhijñārthā parijñārthā prahāṇārthā iti .

kati punar, āyuṣman, pratyayāḥ samyagdṛṣṭyāḥ utpādāya iti ?

dvau khalu, āyuṣman, pratyayau samyagdṛṣṭyāḥ utpādāya — parataḥ ca ghoṣaḥ, yoniśaḥ ca manasikāraḥ . imau khalu, āyuṣman, dvau pratyayau samyagdṛṣṭyāḥ utpādāya iti .

katibhiḥ punar, āyuṣman, aṅgaiḥ anugṛhītā samyagdṛṣṭiḥ cetovimuktiphalā ca bhavati cetovimuktiphalānṛśaṃsā ca, prajñāvimuktiphalā ca bhavati prajñāvimuktiphalānṛśaṃsā ca iti ?

kathaṃ punar, āyuṣman, āyatiṃ punarbhavābhinirvṛttiḥ bhavati iti ?

avidyānīvaraṇānāṃ khalu, āyuṣman, sattvānāṃ tṛṣṇāsaṃyojanānāṃ tatratatrābhinandanā — evam āyatiṃ punarbhavābhinirvṛttiḥ bhavati iti .

kathaṃ punar, āyuṣman, āyatiṃ punarbhavābhinirvṛttiḥ na bhavati iti ?

avidyāvirāgāt khalu, āyuṣman, vidyotpādāt tṛṣṇānirodhāt — evam āyatiṃ punarbhavābhinirvṛttiḥ na bhavati iti .

katamat punar, āyuṣman, prathamaṃ dhyānam iti ?

iha, āyuṣman, bhikṣuḥ vivicya eva kāmebhyaḥ vivicya akuśalebhyaḥ dharmebhyaḥ savitarkaṃ savicāraṃ vivekajaṃ prītisukhaṃ prathamaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya viharati — idam ucyate, āyuṣman, prathamaṃ dhyānam iti .

prathamaṃ punar, āyuṣman, dhyānaṃ katyaṅgikam iti ?

prathamaṃ khalu, āyuṣman, dhyānaṃ pañcāṅgikam . iha, āyuṣman, prathamaṃ dhyānaṃ samāpannasya bhikṣoḥ vitarkaḥ ca vartate, vicāraḥ ca prītiḥ ca sukhaṃ ca cittaikāgratā ca . prathamaṃ khalu, āyuṣman, dhyānam evaṃ pañcāṅgikam iti .

idānīm eva khalu vayam, āyuṣman, āyuṣmataḥ śāriputrasya bhāṣitam evam ājānīmaḥ — āyuḥ ūṣmāṇaṃ pratītya tiṣṭhati iti . idānīṃ eva punaḥ vayam, āyuṣman, āyuṣmataḥ śāriputrasya bhāṣitam evam ājānīmaḥ — ūṣmā āyuḥ pratītya tiṣṭhati iti . yathākathaṃ punar, āyuṣman, asya bhāṣitasya arthaḥ draṣṭavyaḥ iti ?

tena hi, āyuṣman, upamāṃ te kariṣyāmi ; upamayā api iha ekake vijñāḥ puruṣāḥ bhāṣitasya artham ājānanti . tadyathā api, āyuṣman, tailapradīpasya kṣāyataḥ arciḥ pratītya ābhā prajñāyate, ābhāṃ pratītya arciḥ prajñāyate ; evam eva khalu, āyuṣman, āyuḥ ūṣmāṇaṃ pratītya tiṣṭhati, ūṣmā āyuḥ pratītya tiṣṭhati iti .

te eva nu khalu, āyuṣman, āyuḥsaṃskārāḥ, te vedanīyāḥ dharmāḥ utāho anye āyuḥsaṃskārāḥ anye vedanīyāḥ dharmāḥ iti ?

na khalu, āyuṣman, te eva āyuḥsaṃskārāḥ te vedanīyāḥ dharmāḥ . te ca hi, āyuṣman, āyuḥsaṃskārāḥ abhaviṣyan te vedanīyāḥ dharmāḥ, na idaṃ saṃjñāveditanirodhaṃ samāpannasya bhikṣoḥ utthānaṃ prajñāyeta . yasmāt ca khalu, āyuṣman, anye āyuḥsaṃskārāḥ anye vedanīyāḥ dharmāḥ, tasmāt saṃjñāveditanirodhaṃ samāpannasya bhikṣoḥ utthānaṃ prajñāyate iti .

yadā nu khalu, āyuṣman, imaṃ kāyaṃ kati dharmāḥ jahati ; atha ayaṃ kāyaḥ ujjhitaḥ apakṣiptaḥ śete, yathā kāṣṭham acetanam iti ?

yadā khalu, āyuṣman, imaṃ kāyaṃ trayaḥ dharmāḥ jahati — āyuḥ ūṣmā ca vijñānam ; atha ayaṃ kāyaḥ ujjhitaḥ apakṣiptaḥ śete, yathā kāṣṭham acetanam iti .

yaḥ cāyaṃ, āyuṣman, mṛtaḥ kālaṃkṛtaḥ, yaḥ cāyaṃ bhikṣuḥ saṃjñāveditanirodhaṃ samāpannaḥ — anayoḥ kiṃ nānākaraṇam iti ?

catvāraḥ khalu, āyuṣman, pratyayāḥ aduḥkhamasukhāyāḥ cetovimukteḥ samāpattyai . iha, āyuṣman, bhikṣuḥ sukhasya ca prahāṇāt duḥkhasya ca prahāṇāt pūrvaṃ eva saumanasyadaurmanasyānām astaṃgamāt aduḥkhamasukham upekṣāsmṛtipāriśuddhiṃ caturthaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya viharati . ime khalu, āyuṣman, catvāraḥ pratyayāḥ aduḥkhamasukhāyāḥ cetovimukteḥ samāpattyai iti .

yā cāyaṃ, āyuṣman, apramāṇā cetovimuktiḥ, yā ca ākiṃcanyā cetovimuktiḥ, yā ca śūnyatā cetovimuktiḥ, yā ca animittā cetovimuktiḥ — asti khalu, āyuṣman, paryāyaḥ yaṃ paryāyam āgamya ime dharmāḥ nānārthāḥ ca eva nānāvyañjanāḥ ca ; asti ca khalu, āyuṣman, paryāyaḥ yaṃ paryāyam āgamya ime dharmāḥ ekārthāḥ, vyañjanameva nānā .

katamaḥ ca, āyuṣman, paryāyaḥ yaṃ paryāyam āgamya ime dharmāḥ nānārthāḥ ca eva nānāvyañjanāḥ ca ?

iha, āyuṣman, bhikṣuḥ maitrīsahagatena cetasā ekāṃ diśaṃ sphārayitvā viharati, tathā dvitīyām, tathā tṛtīyām, tathā caturthīm . iti ūrdhvam adhaḥ tiryak sarvatra sarvātmatayā sarvāvantaṃ lokaṃ maitrīsahagatena cetasā vipulena mahāgatena apramāṇena avaireṇa avyābādhena sphārayitvā viharati . karuṇāsahagatena cetasā … muditāsahagatena cetasā … upekṣāsahagatena cetasā ekāṃ diśaṃ sphārayitvā viharati, tathā dvitīyām, tathā tṛtīyām, tathā caturthīm . iti ūrdhvam adhaḥ tiryak sarvatra sarvātmatayā sarvāvantaṃ lokaṃ upekṣāsahagatena cetasā vipulena mahāgatena apramāṇena avaireṇa avyābādhena sphārayitvā viharati . iyam ucyate, āyuṣman, apramāṇā cetovimuktiḥ .

katamā ca, āyuṣman, ākiṃcanyā cetovimuktiḥ ? iha, āyuṣman, bhikṣuḥ sarvaśaḥ vijñānānantyāyatanaṃ samatikramya na asti kiṃcit iti ākiṃcanyāyatanam upasaṃpadya viharati . iyam ucyate, āyuṣman, ākiṃcanyā cetovimuktiḥ .

katamā ca, āyuṣman, śūnyatā cetovimuktiḥ ? iha, āyuṣman, bhikṣuḥ araṇyagataḥ vā vṛkṣamūlagataḥ vā śūnyāgāragataḥ vā iti pratisaṃcakṣīta — śūnyam idam ātmanā vā ātmīyena vā iti . iyam ucyate, āyuṣman, śūnyatā cetovimuktiḥ .

katamā ca, āyuṣman, animittā cetovimuktiḥ ? iha, āyuṣman, bhikṣuḥ sarvanimittānām amanasikārāt animittaṃ cetasamādhim upasaṃpadya viharati . iyam ucyate, āyuṣman, animittā cetovimuktiḥ .

ayaṃ khalu, āyuṣman, paryāyaḥ yaṃ paryāyam āgamya ime dharmāḥ nānārthāḥ ca eva nānāvyañjanāḥ ca .

katamaḥ ca, āyuṣman, paryāyaḥ yaṃ paryāyam āgamya ime dharmāḥ ekārthāḥ vyañjanameva nānā ?

rāgaḥ khalu, āyuṣman, pramāṇakaraṇaḥ, dveṣaḥ pramāṇakaraṇaḥ, mohaḥ pramāṇakaraṇaḥ . te kṣīṇāsravasya bhikṣoḥ prahīṇāḥ ucchinnamūlāḥ tālāvatthukṛtāḥ anabhāvaṃkṛtāḥ āyatim anutpādadharmāḥ . yāvatyaḥ khalu, āyuṣman, apramāṇāḥ cetovimuktayaḥ, akopyā tāsāṃ cetovimuktiḥ agram ākhyāyate . sā khalu punar akopyā cetovimuktiḥ śūnyā rāgeṇa, śūnyā dveṣeṇa, śūnyā mohena .

rāgaḥ khalu, āyuṣman, kiṃcanaḥ, dveṣaḥ kiṃcanaḥ, mohaḥ kiṃcanaḥ . te kṣīṇāsravasya bhikṣoḥ prahīṇāḥ ucchinnamūlāḥ tālāvatthukṛtāḥ anabhāvaṃkṛtāḥ āyatim anutpādadharmāḥ . yāvatyaḥ khalu, āyuṣman, ākiṃcanyāḥ cetovimuktayaḥ, akopyā tāsāṃ cetovimuktiḥ agram ākhyāyate . sā khalu punar akopyā cetovimuktiḥ śūnyā rāgeṇa, śūnyā dveṣeṇa, śūnyā mohena .

idam avocat āyuṣmān śāriputraḥ . āttamanāḥ āyuṣmān mahākauṣṭhikaḥ āyuṣmataḥ śāriputrasya bhāṣitam abhyanandat .
