madhyamanikāyaḥ 48 - kauśāmbīyasūtram

evaṃ mayā śrutam — ekasmin samaye bhagavān kauśāmbyāṃ viharati sma ghoṣitārāme .

tena khalu punaḥ samayena kauśāmbyāṃ bhikṣavaḥ bhaṇḍanajātāḥ kalahajātāḥ vivādāpannāḥ anyonyam mukhaśaktībhiḥ vitudantaḥ viharanti . te na ca eva anyonyaṃ saṃjñāpayanti na ca saṃjñaptim upayānti, na ca anyonyaṃ nidhyāpayanti, na ca nidhyāptim upayānti .

atha khalu anyataraḥ bhikṣuḥ bhagavantam upasaṃcakrāma ; upasaṃkramya bhagavantam abhivādya ekānte nyaṣīdat . ekānte niṣaṇṇaḥ khalu saḥ bhikṣuḥ bhagavantam etad avocat — iha, bhadanta, kauśāmbyāṃ bhikṣavaḥ bhaṇḍanajātāḥ kalahajātāḥ vivādāpannāḥ anyonyam mukhaśaktībhiḥ vitudantaḥ viharanti, te na ca eva anyonyaṃ saṃjñāpayanti, na ca saṃjñaptim upayānti, na ca anyonyaṃ nidhyāpayanti, na ca nidhyāptim upayānti iti .

atha khalu bhagavān anyataraṃ bhikṣum āmantrayata — ehi tvam, bhikṣo, mama vacanena tān bhikṣūn āmantraya — śāstā vaḥ āyuṣmataḥ āmantrayate iti .

evam, bhadanta iti khalu saḥ bhikṣuḥ bhagavataḥ pratiśrutya tān bhikṣūn upasaṃcakrāma ; upasaṃkramya tān bhikṣūn etad avocat — śāstā āyuṣmataḥ āmantrayate iti .

evam āvuṣa iti khalu te bhikṣavaḥ tasya bhikṣoḥ pratiśrutya bhagavantam upasaṃcakramuḥ ; upasaṃkramya bhagavantam abhivādya ekānte nyaṣīdan . ekānte niṣaṇṇān khalu te bhikṣūn bhagavān etad avocat —

iti kila, bhikṣavaḥ, yasmin yūyaṃ samaye bhaṇḍanajātāḥ kalahajātāḥ vivādāpannāḥ anyonyam mukhaśaktībhiḥ vitudantaḥ viharatha, na eva yuṣmākaṃ tasmin samaye maitraṃ kāyakarma pratyupasthitaṃ bhavati sabrahmacāriṣu āviḥ ca eva rahaḥ ca, na maitraṃ vākkarma … na maitraṃ manaḥkarma pratyupasthitaṃ bhavati sabrahmacāriṣu āviḥ ca eva rahaḥ ca . atha kim tarhi yūyam, moghapuruṣāḥ, kiṃ jānantaḥ kiṃ paśyantaḥ bhaṇḍanajātāḥ kalahajātāḥ vivādāpannāḥ anyonyam mukhaśaktībhiḥ vitudantaḥ viharatha, te na ca eva anyonyaṃ saṃjñāpayatha, na ca saṃjñaptim upayātha, na ca anyonyaṃ nidhyāpayatha, na ca nidhyāptim upayātha ? tat hi yuṣmākam, moghapuruṣāḥ, bhaviṣyati dīgharātram ahitāya duḥkhāya iti .

atha khalu bhagavān bhikṣūn āmantrayata —

ṣaṭ ime, bhikṣavaḥ, dharmāḥ smāraṇīyāḥ priyakaraṇāḥ gurukaraṇāḥ saṃgrahāya avivādāya sāmagryāi ekībhāvāya saṃvartante . katame ṣaṭ ? iha, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣoḥ maitraṃ kāyakarma pratyupasthitaṃ bhavati sabrahmacāriṣu āviḥ ca eva rahaḥ ca . ayam api dharmaḥ smāraṇīyaḥ priyakaraṇaḥ gurukaraṇaḥ saṃgrahāya avivādāya sāmagryāi ekībhāvāya saṃvartate .

punar ca aparam, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ ye te lābhāḥ dhārmikāḥ dharmalabdhāḥ antamaśaḥ pātraparyāpannamatrām api, tathārūpaiḥ lābhaiḥ aprativibhaktabhogī bhavati śīlavadbhiḥ sabrahmacāribhiḥ sādhāraṇabhogī . ayam api dharmaḥ smāraṇīyaḥ priyakaraṇaḥ gurukaraṇaḥ saṃgrahāya avivādāya sāmagryāi ekībhāvāya saṃvartate .

punar ca aparam, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ yāni tāni śīlāni akhaṇḍāni acchidrāni aśabalāni akalmāṣāni bhujyṣyāni vijñapraśastāni aparāmṛṣṭāni samādhyāvahāni tathārūpeṣu śīleṣu śīlasāmānyagataḥ viharati sabrahmacāribhiḥ āviḥ ca eva rahaḥ ca . ayam api dharmaḥ smāraṇīyaḥ priyakaraṇaḥ gurukaraṇaḥ saṃgrahāya avivādāya sāmagryāi ekībhāvāya saṃvartate .

punar ca aparam, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ yā iyaṃ dṛṣṭiḥ āryā nairyāṇikā niryāti tatkarasya samyag duḥkhakṣayāya tathārūpayā dṛṣṭyā dṛṣṭisāmānyagataḥ viharati sabrahmacāribhiḥ āviḥ ca eva rahaḥ ca . ayam api dharmaḥ smāraṇīyaḥ priyakaraṇaḥ gurukaraṇaḥ saṃgrahāya avivādāya sāmagryāi ekībhāvāya saṃvartate .

ime khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, ṣaṭ smāraṇīyāḥ dharmāḥ priyakaraṇāḥ gurukaraṇāḥ saṃgrahāya avivādāya sāmagryāi ekībhāvāya saṃvartante .

eṣāṃ khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, ṣaṇṇāṃ smāraṇīyānāṃ dharmāṇām etad agram etad saṃgāhikam etat saṃghāṭanikaṃ — yad idaṃ yā iyaṃ dṛṣṭiḥ āryā nairyāṇikā niryāti tatkarasya samyag duḥkhakṣayāya . tadyathā api, bhikṣavaḥ, kūṭāgārasya etad agram etad saṃgāhikam etat saṃghāṭanikaṃ yad idaṃ kūṭam ; evam eva khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, eṣāṃ ṣaṇṇāṃ smāraṇīyānāṃ dharmāṇām etad agram etad saṃgāhikam etat saṃghāṭanikaṃ yad idaṃ yā iyaṃ dṛṣṭiḥ āryā nairyāṇikā niryāti tatkarasya samyag duḥkhakṣayāya .

kathaṃ ca, bhikṣavaḥ, yā iyaṃ dṛṣṭiḥ āryā nairyāṇikā niryāti tatkarasya samyag duḥkhakṣayāya ? iha, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ araṇyagataḥ vā vṛkṣamūlagataḥ vā śūnyāgāragataḥ vā iti pratisaṃcaṣṭe — asti nu khalu me tat paryutthānam adhyātmam aprahīṇam, yena ahaṃ paryutthānena paryutthitacittaḥ yathābhūtaṃ na prajānīyāṃ na paśyeyam iti ? sacet, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ kāmarāgaparyutthitaḥ bhavati, paryutthitacittaḥ eva bhavati . sacet, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ vyāpādaparyutthitaḥ bhavati, paryutthitacittaḥ eva bhavati . sacet, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ styānamiddhaparyutthitaḥ bhavati, paryutthitacittaḥ eva bhavati . sacet, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ auddhatyakaukṛtyaparyutthitaḥ bhavati, paryutthitacittaḥ eva bhavati . sacet, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ vicikitsāparyutthitaḥ bhavati, paryutthitacittaḥ eva bhavati . sacet, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ ihalokacintāyāṃ prasṛtaḥ bhavati, paryutthitacittaḥ eva bhavati . sacet, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ paralokacintāyāṃ prasṛtaḥ bhavati, paryutthitacittaḥ eva bhavati . sacet, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ bhaṇḍanajātaḥ kalahajātaḥ vivādāpannaḥ anyonyam mukhaśaktībhiḥ vitudan viharati, paryutthitacittaḥ eva bhavati . saḥ evaṃ prajānāti — na asti khalu me tat paryutthānam adhyātmam aprahīṇam, yena ahaṃ paryutthānena paryutthitacittaḥ yathābhūtaṃ na prajānīyāṃ na paśyeyam . supraṇihitaṃ me mānasaṃ satyānāṃ bodhāya iti . idam asya prathamaṃ jñānam adhigataṃ bhavati āryaṃ lokottaram asādhāraṇaṃ pṛthagjanaiḥ .

punar ca aparam, bhikṣavaḥ, āryaśrāvakaḥ iti pratisaṃcaṣṭe — imāṃ nu khalu ahaṃ dṛṣṭim āsevamānaḥ bhāvayan bahulīkurvan labhe pratyātmaṃ śamatham, labhe pratyātmaṃ nirvṛtim iti ? saḥ evaṃ prajānāti — imāṃ khalu ahaṃ dṛṣṭim āsevamānaḥ bhāvayan bahulīkurvan labhe pratyātmaṃ śamatham, labhe pratyātmaṃ nirvṛtim iti . idam asya dvitīyaṃ jñānam adhigataṃ bhavati āryaṃ lokottaram asādhāraṇaṃ pṛthagjanaiḥ .

punar ca aparam, bhikṣavaḥ, āryaśrāvakaḥ iti pratisaṃcaṣṭe — yathārūpayā ahaṃ dṛṣṭyā samanvitaḥ, asti nu khalu itaḥ bahirdhā anyaḥ śramaṇaḥ vā brāhmaṇaḥ vā tathārūpayā dṛṣṭyā samanvitaḥ iti ? saḥ evaṃ prajānāti — yathārūpayā ahaṃ dṛṣṭyā samanvitaḥ, na asti itaḥ bahirdhā anyaḥ śramaṇaḥ vā brāhmaṇaḥ vā tathārūpayā dṛṣṭyā samanvitaḥ iti . idam asya tṛtīyaṃ jñānam adhigataṃ bhavati āryaṃ lokottaram asādhāraṇaṃ pṛthagjanaiḥ .

punar ca aparam, bhikṣavaḥ, āryaśrāvakaḥ iti pratisaṃcaṣṭe — yathārūpayā dharmatayā dṛṣṭisaṃpannaḥ pudgalaḥ samanvitaḥ, aham api tathārūpayā dharmatayā samanvitaḥ iti . kathaṃrūpayā ca, bhikṣavaḥ, dharmatayā dṛṣṭisaṃpannaḥ pudgalaḥ samanvitaḥ ? dharmatā eṣā, bhikṣavaḥ, dṛṣṭisaṃpannasya pudgalasya — yadyapi tathārūpām āpattim āpadyate, yathārūpayā āpattyā utthānaṃ prajñāyate, atha khalu enāṃ kṣipram eva śāstari vā vijñeṣu vā sabrahmacāriṣu deśayati vivṛṇoti uttānīkaroti ; deśayitvā vivṛtya uttānīkṛtya āyatiṃ saṃvaram āpadyate . tadyathā api, bhikṣavaḥ, daharaḥ kumāraḥ mandaḥ uttānaśayyakaḥ hastena vā pādena vā aṅgāram ākramya kṣipram eva pratisaṃharati ; evam eva khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, dharmatā eṣā dṛṣṭisaṃpannasya pudgalasya — yadyapi tathārūpām āpattim āpadyate yathārūpayā āpattyā utthānaṃ prajñāyate, atha khalu enāṃ kṣipram eva śāstari vā vijñeṣu vā sabrahmacāriṣu deśayati vivṛṇoti uttānīkaroti ; deśayitvā vivṛtya uttānīkṛtya āyatiṃ saṃvaram āpadyate . saḥ evaṃ prajānāti — yathārūpayā dharmatayā dṛṣṭisaṃpannaḥ pudgalaḥ samanvitaḥ, aham api tathārūpayā dharmatayā samanvitaḥ iti . idam asya caturthaṃ jñānam adhigataṃ bhavati āryaṃ lokottaram asādhāraṇaṃ pṛthagjanaiḥ .

punar ca aparam, bhikṣavaḥ, āryaśrāvakaḥ iti pratisaṃcaṣṭe — yathārūpayā dharmatayā dṛṣṭisaṃpannaḥ pudgalaḥ samanvitaḥ, aham api tathārūpayā dharmatayā samanvitaḥ iti . kathaṃrūpayā ca, bhikṣavaḥ, dharmatayā dṛṣṭisaṃpannaḥ pudgalaḥ samanvitaḥ ? dharmatā eṣā, bhikṣavaḥ, dṛṣṭisaṃpannasya pudgalasya — yadyapi yāni tāni sabrahmacāriṇām uccāvacāni kiṃkaraṇīyāni tatra utsukam āpannaḥ bhavati, atha khalu asya tīvrāpekṣā bhavati adhiśīlaśikṣāyām adhicittaśikṣāyām adhiprajñāśikṣāyām . tadyathā api, bhikṣavaḥ, gauḥ taruṇavatsā stambaṃ ca ālumpati vatsakaṃ ca apacinoti ; evam eva khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, dharmatā eṣā dṛṣṭisaṃpannasya pudgalasya — yadyapi yāni tāni sabrahmacāriṇām uccāvacāni kiṃkaraṇīyāni tatra utsukam āpannaḥ bhavati, atha khalu asya tīvrāpekṣā bhavati adhiśīlaśikṣāyām adhicittaśikṣāyām adhiprajñāśikṣāyām . saḥ evaṃ prajānāti — yathārūpayā dharmatayā dṛṣṭisaṃpannaḥ pudgalaḥ samanvitaḥ, aham api tathārūpayā dharmatayā samanvitaḥ iti . idam asya pañcamaṃ jñānam adhigataṃ bhavati āryaṃ lokottaram asādhāraṇaṃ pṛthagjanaiḥ .

punar ca aparam, bhikṣavaḥ, āryaśrāvakaḥ iti pratisaṃcaṣṭe — yathārūpayā balatayā dṛṣṭisaṃpannaḥ pudgalaḥ samanvitaḥ, aham api tathārūpayā balatayā samanvitaḥ iti . kathaṃrūpayā ca, bhikṣavaḥ, balatayā dṛṣṭisaṃpannaḥ pudgalaḥ samanvitaḥ ? balatā eṣā, bhikṣavaḥ, dṛṣṭisaṃpannasya pudgalasya yat tathāgatapravedite dharmavinaye deśyamāne arthikṛtya manasikṛtya sarvacetasā samanvāhṛtya avahitaśrotraḥ dharmaṃ śṛṇoti . saḥ evaṃ prajānāti — yathārūpayā balatayā dṛṣṭisaṃpannaḥ pudgalaḥ samanvitaḥ, aham api tathārūpayā balatayā samanvitaḥ iti . idam asya ṣaṣṭhaṃ jñānam adhigataṃ bhavati āryaṃ lokottaram asādhāraṇaṃ pṛthagjanaiḥ .

punar ca aparam, bhikṣavaḥ, āryaśrāvakaḥ iti pratisaṃcaṣṭe — yathārūpayā balatayā dṛṣṭisaṃpannaḥ pudgalaḥ samanvitaḥ, aham api tathārūpayā balatayā samanvitaḥ iti . kathaṃrūpayā ca, bhikṣavaḥ, balatayā dṛṣṭisaṃpannaḥ pudgalaḥ samanvitaḥ ? balatā eṣā, bhikṣavaḥ, dṛṣṭisaṃpannasya pudgalasya yat tathāgatapravedite dharmavinaye deśyamāne labhate arthavedam, labhate dharmavedam, labhate dharmopasaṃhitaṃ prāmodyam . saḥ evaṃ prajānāti — yathārūpayā balatayā dṛṣṭisaṃpannaḥ pudgalaḥ samanvitaḥ, aham api tathārūpayā balatayā samanvitaḥ iti . idam asya saptamaṃ jñānam adhigataṃ bhavati āryaṃ lokottaram asādhāraṇaṃ pṛthagjanaiḥ .

evaṃ saptāṅgasamanvitasya khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, āryaśrāvakasya dharmatā susamanviṣṭhā bhavati srotaāpattiphalasākṣātkriyāyai . evaṃ saptāṅgasamanvitaḥ khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, āryaśrāvakaḥ srotaāpattiphalasamanvitaḥ bhavati iti .

idam avocat bhagavān . āttamanasaḥ te bhikṣavaḥ bhagavataḥ bhāṣitam abhyanandiṣuḥ .
