madhyamanikāyaḥ 47 - mīmāṃsakasūtram

evaṃ mayā śrutam — ekasmin samaye bhagavān śrāvastyāṃ viharati sma jetavane anāthapiṇḍadasya ārāme . tatra khalu bhagavān bhikṣūn āmantrayata — bhikṣavaḥ iti .

bhadanta iti te bhikṣavaḥ bhagavataḥ pratyaśrauṣuḥ . bhagavān etad avocat —

mīmāṃsakena, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuṇā parasya cetaḥparyāyam ajānatā tathāgate samanveṣaṇā kartavyā — samyaksambuddhaḥ vā na vā iti vijñānāya iti .

bhagavanmūlakāḥ naḥ, bhadanta, dharmāḥ, bhagavannetṛkāḥ bhagavatpratiśaraṇāḥ ; sādhu vata, bhadanta, bhagavantam eva pratibhātu etasya bhāṣitasya arthaḥ ; bhagavataḥ śrutvā bhikṣavaḥ dhārayiṣyanti iti .

tena hi, bhikṣavaḥ, śṛṇuta, sādhu manasi kuruta, bhāṣiṣye iti .

evam, bhadanta iti khalu te bhikṣavaḥ bhagavataḥ pratyaśrauṣuḥ . bhagavān etad avocat —

mīmāṃsakena, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuṇā parasya cetaḥparyāyam ajānatā dvayor dharmayoḥ tathāgataḥ samanveṣitavyaḥ cakṣuḥśrotravijñeyeyṣu dharmeṣu — ye saṃkliṣṭāḥ cakṣuḥśrotravijñeyāḥ dharmāḥ, saṃvidyante vā te tathāgatasya na vā iti ? tam enaṃ samanveṣamāṇaḥ evaṃ jānāti — ye saṃkliṣṭāḥ cakṣuḥśrotravijñeyāḥ dharmāḥ, na te tathāgatasya saṃvidyante iti .

yataḥ enam samanveṣamāṇaḥ evaṃ jānāti — ye saṃkliṣṭāḥ cakṣuḥśrotravijñeyāḥ dharmāḥ, na te tathāgatasya saṃvidyante iti, tataḥ enam uttari samanveṣate — ye vyatimiśrāḥ cakṣuḥśrotravijñeyāḥ dharmāḥ, saṃvidyante vā te tathāgatasya na vā iti ? tam enaṃ samanveṣamāṇaḥ evaṃ jānāti — ye vyatimiśrāḥ cakṣuḥśrotravijñeyāḥ dharmāḥ, na te tathāgatasya saṃvidyante iti .

yataḥ enam samanveṣamāṇaḥ evaṃ jānāti — ye vyatimiśrāḥ cakṣuḥśrotravijñeyāḥ dharmāḥ, na te tathāgatasya saṃvidyante iti, tataḥ enam uttari samanveṣate — ye vyavadātāḥ cakṣuḥśrotravijñeyāḥ dharmāḥ, saṃvidyante vā te tathāgatasya na vā iti ? tam enaṃ samanveṣamāṇaḥ evaṃ jānāti — ye vyavadātāḥ cakṣuḥśrotravijñeyāḥ dharmāḥ, saṃvidyante te tathāgatasya iti .

yataḥ enam samanveṣamāṇaḥ evaṃ jānāti — ye vyavadātāḥ cakṣuḥśrotravijñeyāḥ dharmāḥ, saṃvidyante te tathāgatasya iti, tataḥ enam uttari samanveṣate — dīgharātraṃ samāpannaḥ ayam āyuṣmān imaṃ kuśalaṃ dharmam, utāho itvarasamāpannaḥ iti ? tam enaṃ samanveṣamāṇaḥ evaṃ jānāti — dīgharātraṃ samāpannaḥ ayam āyuṣmān imaṃ kuśalaṃ dharmam, na ayam āyuṣmān itvarasamāpannaḥ iti .

yataḥ enam samanveṣamāṇaḥ evaṃ jānāti — dīgharātraṃ samāpannaḥ ayam āyuṣmān imaṃ kuśalaṃ dharmam, na ayam āyuṣmān itvarasamāpannaḥ iti, tataḥ enam uttari samanveṣate — jñātādhyāpannaḥ ayam āyuṣmān bhikṣuḥ yaśaḥprāptaḥ, saṃvidyante asya iha eke ādīnavāḥ iti ? na tāvat, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣoḥ iha eke ādīnavāḥ saṃvidyante yāvan na jñātādhyāpannaḥ bhavati yaśaḥprāptaḥ . yataḥ ca khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ jñātādhyāpannaḥ bhavati yaśaḥprāptaḥ, atha asya iha eke ādīnavāḥ saṃvidyante . tam enaṃ samanveṣamāṇaḥ evaṃ jānāti — jñātādhyāpannaḥ ayam āyuṣmān bhikṣuḥ yaśaḥprāptaḥ, na asya iha eke ādīnavāḥ saṃvidyante iti .

yataḥ enam samanveṣamāṇaḥ evaṃ jānāti — jñātādhyāpannaḥ ayam āyuṣmān bhikṣuḥ yaśaḥprāptaḥ, na asya iha eke ādīnavāḥ saṃvidyante iti, tataḥ enam uttari samanveṣate — abhayoparatiḥ ayam āyuṣmān, na ayam āyuṣmān bhayoparatiḥ ; vītarāgatvāt kāmān na sevate kṣayāt rāgasya iti ? tam enaṃ samanveṣamāṇaḥ evaṃ jānāti — abhayoparatiḥ ayam āyuṣmān, na ayam āyuṣmān bhayoparatiḥ ; vītarāgatvāt kāmān na sevate kṣayāt rāgasya iti .

taṃ cet, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuṃ pare evaṃ pṛccheyuḥ — ke punar āyuṣmataḥ ākārāḥ, ke anvayāḥ, yena āyuṣmān evaṃ vadasi — abhayoparatiḥ ayam āyuṣmān, na ayam āyuṣmān bhayoparatiḥ ; vītarāgatvāt kāmān na sevate kṣayāt rāgasya iti . samyag vyākurvāṇaḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ evaṃ vyākuryāt — tathā hi punar ayam āyuṣmān saṃghe vā viharan ekaḥ vā viharan, ye ca tatra sugatāḥ ye ca tatra durgatāḥ, ye ca tatra gaṇam anuśāsati, ye ca iha eke āmiṣeṣu saṃdṛśyante, ye ca iha eke āmiṣeṇa anupaliptāḥ, na ayam āyuṣmān taṃ tena avajānāti . sammukhāt khalu punar mayā etat bhagavataḥ śrutaṃ sammukhāt pratigṛhītam — abhayoparatiḥ aham asmi, na aham asmi bhayoparatiḥ, vītarāgatvāt kāmān na sevāmi kṣayāt rāgasya iti .

tatra, bhikṣavaḥ, tathāgataḥ eva uttari paripṛṣṭavyaḥ — ye saṃkliṣṭāḥ cakṣuḥśrotravijñeyāḥ dharmāḥ, saṃvidyante vā te tathāgatasya na vā iti ? vyākurvāṇaḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, tathāgataḥ evaṃ vyākuryāt — ye saṃkliṣṭāḥ cakṣuḥśrotravijñeyāḥ dharmāḥ, na te tathāgatasya saṃvidyante iti .

ye vyatimiśrāḥ cakṣuḥśrotravijñeyāḥ dharmāḥ, saṃvidyante vā te tathāgatasya na vā iti ? vyākurvāṇaḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, tathāgataḥ evaṃ vyākuryāt — ye vyatimiśrāḥ cakṣuḥśrotravijñeyāḥ dharmāḥ, na te tathāgatasya saṃvidyante iti .

ye vyavadātāḥ cakṣuḥśrotravijñeyāḥ dharmāḥ, saṃvidyante vā te tathāgatasya na vā iti ? vyākurvāṇaḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, tathāgataḥ evaṃ vyākuryāt — ye vyavadātāḥ cakṣuḥśrotravijñeyāḥ dharmāḥ, saṃvidyante te tathāgatasya ; etadgocaraḥ aham asmi, etadpathaḥ, na ca tena tanmayaḥ iti .

evaṃvādinam khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, śāstāram arhati śrāvakaḥ upasaṃkramituṃ dharmaśravaṇāya . tasya śāstā dharmaṃ deśayati uttarottaraṃ praṇītapraṇītaṃ kṛṣṇaśuklasapratibhāgam . yathā yathā khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣave śāstā dharmaṃ deśayati uttarottaraṃ praṇītapraṇītaṃ kṛṣṇaśuklasapratibhāgam, tathā tathā saḥ tasmin dharme abhijñāya iha ekaṃ dharmam dharmeṣu niṣṭhāṃ gacchati, śāstari prasīdati — samyaksambuddhaḥ bhagavān, svākhyātaḥ bhagavatā dharmaḥ, supratipannaḥ saṃghaḥ iti .

taṃ cet, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuṃ pare evaṃ pṛccheyuḥ — ke punar āyuṣmataḥ ākārāḥ, ke anvayāḥ, yena āyuṣmān evaṃ vadasi — samyaksambuddhaḥ bhagavān, svākhyātaḥ bhagavatā dharmaḥ, supratipannaḥ saṃghaḥ iti ? samyag vyākurvāṇaḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ evaṃ vyākuryāt — iha aham, āyuṣmantaḥ, yena bhagavān tena upasaṃkramiṣaṃ dharmaśravaṇāya . tasya me bhagavān dharmaṃ deśayati uttarottaraṃ praṇītapraṇītaṃ kṛṣṇaśuklasapratibhāgam . yathā yathā me, āyuṣmantaḥ, bhagavān dharmaṃ deśayati uttarottaraṃ praṇītapraṇītaṃ kṛṣṇaśuklasapratibhāgaṃ tathā tathā ahaṃ tasmin dharme abhijñāya iha ekaṃ dharmaṃ dharmeṣu niṣṭhām agamam, śāstari prasīdam — samyaksambuddhaḥ bhagavān, svākhyātaḥ bhagavatā dharmaḥ, supratipannaḥ saṃghaḥ iti .

yasya kasyacit, bhikṣavaḥ, ebhiḥ ākāraiḥ ebhiḥ padaiḥ ebhiḥ vyañjanaiḥ tathāgate śraddhā niviṣṭā bhavati mūlajātā pratiṣṭhitā, iyam ucyate, bhikṣavaḥ, ākāravatī śraddhā darśanamūlikā ; dṛḍhā asaṃhāryā śramaṇena vā brāhmaṇena vā devena vā māreṇa vā brahmaṇā vā kenacit vā loke . evaṃ khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, tathāgate dharmasamanveṣaṇā bhavati . evaṃ ca punaḥ tathāgataḥ dharmatāsusamanniṣṭhitaḥ bhavati iti .

idam avocat bhagavān . āttamanasaḥ te bhikṣavaḥ bhagavataḥ bhāṣitam abhyanandiṣuḥ .
