śrāvastīnidānam. atha khalu bahvyaḥ śatollāpakāyikā devatā atikrāntāyāṃ rātryām atikrāntavarṇāḥ kevalakalpaṃ jetavanam avabhāsya bhagavantam upasañcakramuḥ; upasaṅkramya bhagavantam abhivādya ekānte tasthuḥ. ekānte sthitā khalu ekatamā devatā bhagavato ’ntike imam udānam udānayat —
Set in Śrāvastī. Then, when the night was advanced, many deities of the śatollāpa (“hundred-utterances”) group, of surpassing beauty, illuminating the whole of Jeta's Grove, approached the Bhagavān. Having approached and paid homage to the Bhagavān, they stood to one side. Standing to one side, one of the deities uttered this inspired utterance in the presence of the Bhagavān:

“sādhu khalu māriṣa dānam.
mātsaryāc ca pramādāc ca, evaṃ dānaṃ na dīyate.
puṇyam ākaṅkṣamāṇena, deyaṃ bhavati jānatā॥” iti.

“Good indeed, sir, is giving!
Due to stinginess and negligence, a gift is not given.
One who desires merit, being wise, should give.”

atha khalu aparā devatā bhagavato ’ntike imam udānam udānayat —
“sādhu khalu māriṣa dānam.
api cālpād api sādhu dānam.
alpād eke prayacchanti, bahūny eke na ditsante.
alpād dakṣiṇā dattā, sahasreṇa samaṃ mitā॥” iti.

Then another deity uttered this inspired utterance in the presence of the Bhagavān:
“Good indeed, sir, is giving!
And good is giving even from a little.
Some give from a little, while some who have much do not wish to give.
An offering given from a little is equal to a thousand.”

atha khalu aparā devatā bhagavato ’ntike imam udānam udānayat —
“sādhu khalu māriṣa dānam, alpād api sādhu dānam.
api ca śraddhayāpi sādhu dānam.
dānaṃ ca yuddhaṃ ca samānam āhuḥ,
alpā api santo bahūn jayanti.
alpam api cet śraddadhāno dadāti,
tenaiva sa bhavati sukhī paratra॥” iti.

Then another deity uttered this inspired utterance in the presence of the Bhagavān:
“Good indeed, sir, is giving; good is giving even a little.
And good is giving with faith.
Giving and battle, they say, are alike;
even a few good people can conquer many.
If one gives even a little with faith,
by that alone one becomes happy hereafter.”

atha khalu aparā devatā bhagavato ’ntike imam udānam udānayat —
“sādhu khalu māriṣa dānam, alpād api sādhu dānam.
śraddhayāpi sādhu dānam, api ca dharmalabdhasyāpi sādhu dānam.
yo dharmalabdhasya dadāti dānam,
utthānavīryādhigatasya jantuḥ.
atikramya sa vaitaraṇīṃ yamasya,
divyāni sthānāny upaiti martyaḥ॥” iti.

Then another deity uttered this inspired utterance in the presence of the Bhagavān:
“Good indeed, sir, is giving; good is giving even from a little.
Good is giving with faith, and good is giving what is righteously obtained.
The person who gives a gift of what is righteously obtained,
acquired through effort and energy,
that mortal crosses Yama's river Vaitaraṇī,
and attains divine realms.”

atha khalu aparā devatā bhagavato ’ntike imam udānam udānayat —
“sādhu khalu māriṣa dānam, alpād api sādhu dānam.
śraddhayāpi sādhu dānam, dharmalabdhasyāpi sādhu dānam.
api ca viceyaṃ dānam api sādhu dānam.
viceya dānaṃ sugatapraśastaṃ,
ye dakṣiṇīyā iha jīvaloke.
eteṣu dattāni mahāphalāni,
bījāny uptāni yathā sukṣetre॥” iti.

Then another deity uttered this inspired utterance in the presence of the Bhagavān:
“Good indeed, sir, is giving; good is giving even from a little.
Good is giving with faith; good is giving what is righteously obtained.
And good is giving what is sought-after.
A gift that is sought-after is praised by the Sugata,
to those worthy of offerings in this world of the living.
Gifts given to them bear great fruit,
like seeds sown in a fertile field.”

atha khalu aparā devatā bhagavato ’ntike imam udānam udānayat —
“sādhu khalu māriṣa dānam, alpād api sādhu dānam.
śraddhayāpi sādhu dānam, dharmalabdhasyāpi sādhu dānam.
viceya dānam api sādhu dānam, api ca prāṇeṣv api sādhu saṃyamaḥ.
yaḥ prāṇabhūtāny aheḍayaṃś caran,
parāpavādāt na karoti pāpam.
bhīruṃ praśaṃsanti na hi tatra śūraṃ,
bhayād dhi santo na kurvanti pāpam॥” iti.

Then another deity uttered this inspired utterance in the presence of the Bhagavān:
“Good indeed, sir, is giving; good is giving even from a little.
Good is giving with faith; good is giving what is righteously obtained.
Good is giving what's sought after, and good also is restraint towards living beings.
One who moves about without harming living beings,
who does no evil out of fear of blame,
they praise the timid one, not the brave one there,
for it is out of fear that the good do no evil.”

atha khalu aparā devatā bhagavantam etad avocat — “kasya nu khalu bhagavan subhāṣitam?” iti.
“sarvāsāṃ vaḥ subhāṣitaṃ paryāyeṇa, api ca mamāpi śṛṇuta —
śraddhā hi dānaṃ bahudhā praśastaṃ,
dānāc ca khalu dharmapadam eva śreyaḥ.
pūrve ca hi pūrvatare ca santaḥ,
nirvāṇam evādhyagaman saprajñāḥ॥” iti.

Then another deity said this to the Bhagavān: “Whose, O Bhagavān, was the well-spoken verse?”
“All of yours were well-spoken in their own way. But listen to mine as well:
‘Indeed, giving with faith is praised in many ways,
but better than giving is the path of Dhamma.
For the good people of the (recent) past and of even earlier times,
being wise, attained nothing less than Nirvāṇa.’”
