Saṃyukta Nikāya 1.32 — Stinginess
एकस्मिन् समये भगवान् श्रावस्त्यां विहरति स्म जेतवनेऽनाथपिण्डदस्य आरामे। अथ खलु बह्व्यः शतोल्लापकायिका देवता अतिक्रान्तायां रात्र्याम् अतिक्रान्तवर्णाः केवलकल्पं जेतवनम् अवभास्य भगवन्तम् उपसञ्चक्रमुः; उपसङ्क्रम्य भगवन्तम् अभिवाद्य एकान्ते तस्थुः। एकान्ते स्थिता खलु एका देवता भगवतोऽन्तिके इमां गाथामभाषत —
ekasmin samaye bhagavān śrāvastyāṃ viharati sma jetavane ’nāthapiṇḍadasya ārāme. atha khalu bahvyaḥ śatollāpakāyikā devatā atikrāntāyāṃ rātryām atikrāntavarṇāḥ kevalakalpaṃ jetavanam avabhāsya bhagavantam upasañcakramuḥ; upasaṅkramya bhagavantam abhivādya ekānte tasthuḥ. ekānte sthitā khalu ekā devatā bhagavato ’ntike imāṃ gāthām abhāṣata —
At one time the Bhagavān was dwelling in Śrāvastī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍada's Park. Then, when the night was advanced, many deities of the śatollāpa (“hundred-utterances”) group, of surpassing beauty, illuminating the whole of Jeta's Grove, approached the Bhagavān. Having approached and paid homage to the Bhagavān, they stood to one side. Standing to one side, one of the deities recited this verse in the presence of the Bhagavān:
“मात्सर्याच्च प्रमादाच्च एवं दानं न दीयते।
पुण्यम् आकाङ्क्षमाणेन देयं भवति जानता॥” इति।
“mātsaryāc ca pramādāc ca evaṃ dānaṃ na dīyate.
puṇyam ākaṅkṣamāṇena deyaṃ bhavati jānatā॥” iti.
“Due to stinginess and negligence, a gift is not given.
One who desires merit, being wise, should give.”
अथ खलु अपरा देवता भगवतोऽन्तिके इमां गाथामभाषत —
“यस्मादेव भीतो न ददाति मत्सरी, तदेवाददतो भयम्।
जिघत्सा च पिपासा च, यस्माद् बिभेति मत्सरी।
तमेव बालं स्पृशतः, अस्मिन् लोके परे च ह।
तस्माद् विनीय मात्सर्यं, दद्याद् दानं मलाभिभूः।
पुण्यानि परलोके, प्रतिष्ठा भवन्ति प्राणिनाम्॥” इति।
atha khalu aparā devatā bhagavato ’ntike imāṃ gāthām abhāṣata —
“yasmād eva bhīto na dadāti matsarī, tad evādadato bhayam.
jighatsā ca pipāsā ca, yasmād bibheti matsarī.
tam eva bālaṃ spṛśataḥ, asmin loke pare ca ha.
tasmād vinīya mātsaryaṃ, dadyād dānaṃ malābhibhūḥ.
puṇyāni paraloke, pratiṣṭhā bhavanti prāṇinām॥” iti.
Then another deity recited these verses in the presence of the Bhagavān:
“The very thing the stingy person fears in not giving, that fear remains for the non-giver.
Hunger and thirst, which the stingy person fears,
afflicts that immature one in this world and the next.
Therefore, having removed stinginess, one who has overcome stain should give a gift.
Merits are the support for living beings in the next world.”
अथ खलु अपरा देवता भगवतोऽन्तिके इमां गाथामभाषत —
“ते मृतेषु न म्रियन्ते, पन्थानमिव सहव्रजम्।
अल्पे ये प्रयच्छन्ति, एष धर्मः सनातनः।
अल्पादेके प्रयच्छन्ति, बहून्येके न दित्सन्ते।
अल्पाद् दक्षिणा दत्ता, सहस्रेण समं मिता॥” इति।
atha khalu aparā devatā bhagavato ’ntike imāṃ gāthām abhāṣata —
“te mṛteṣu na mriyante, panthānam iva sahavrajam.
alpe ye prayacchanti, eṣa dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ.
alpād eke prayacchanti, bahūny eke na ditsante.
alpād dakṣiṇā dattā, sahasreṇa samaṃ mitā॥” iti.
Then another deity recited these verses in the presence of the Bhagavān:
“Among those who die, like fellow travelers on a journey, these (givers) do not die.
Those who give from the little they have, this is the eternal law.
Some give from a little, while some who have much do not wish to give.
An offering given from a little is equal to a thousand.”
अथ खलु अपरा देवता भगवतोऽन्तिके इमां गाथामभाषत —
“दुर्द्ददं ददमानानां, दुष्करं कर्म कुर्वताम्।
असन्तो नानुकुर्वन्ति, सतां धर्मो दुरन्वयः।
तस्मात् सतां चासतां, नाना भवति इतो गतिः।
असन्तो निरयं यान्ति, सन्तः स्वर्गपरायणाः॥” इति।
atha khalu aparā devatā bhagavato ’ntike imāṃ gāthām abhāṣata —
“durddadaṃ dadamānānāṃ, duṣkaraṃ karma kurvatām.
asanto nānukurvanti, satāṃ dharmo duranvayaḥ.
tasmāt satāṃ cāsatāṃ, nānā bhavati ito gatiḥ.
asanto nirayaṃ yānti, santaḥ svargaparāyaṇāḥ॥” iti.
Then another deity recited these verses in the presence of the Bhagavān:
“For those who give what is hard to give, who do what is difficult to do,
the wicked do not emulate them; the Dhamma of the good is hard to follow.
Therefore, the destination from here is different for the good and the wicked.
The wicked go to hell, while the good are bound for heaven.”
अथ खलु अपरा देवता भगवन्तम् एतदवोचत् — “कस्य नु खलु भगवन् सुभाषितम्?” इति।
“सर्वासां वः सुभाषितं पर्यायेण; अपि च ममापि शृणुत —
धर्मं चरेद् योऽपि समुञ्जकं चरेत्,
दारं च पोषयन् दद्यादल्पकात्।
शतं सहस्राणां सहस्रयाजिनां,
कलामपि नार्हन्ति तथाविधस्य ते॥” इति।
atha khalu aparā devatā bhagavantam etad avocat — “kasya nu khalu bhagavan subhāṣitam?” iti.
“sarvāsāṃ vaḥ subhāṣitaṃ paryāyeṇa; api ca mamāpi śṛṇuta —
dharmaṃ cared yo ’pi uñchaṃ caret,
dārān ca poṣayan dadyād alpakāt.
śataṃ sahasrāṇāṃ sahasrayājināṃ,
kalām api nārhanti tathāvidhasya te॥” iti.
Then another deity said this to the Bhagavān: “Whose, O Bhagavān, was the well-spoken verse?”
“All of yours were well-spoken in their own way; but listen to mine as well:
‘One who lives righteously, even if living by gleaning,
who supports his wife and gives from the little he has—
a hundred thousand sacrifices of those who sacrifice a thousand times,
are not worth even a fraction of such a person's gift.’”
अथ खलु अपरा देवता भगवन्तं गाथयाध्यभाषत —
“केनैष यज्ञो विपुलो महद्गतः,
शमेन दत्तस्य नार्हम् एति।
कथं शतं सहस्राणां सहस्रयाजिनां,
कलामपि नार्हन्ति तथाविधस्य ते॥” इति।
atha khalu aparā devatā bhagavantaṃ gāthayādhyabhāṣata —
“kenaiṣa yajño vipulo mahadgataḥ,
śamena dattasya nārham eti.
kathaṃ śataṃ sahasrāṇāṃ sahasrayājināṃ,
kalām api nārhanti tathāvidhasya te॥” iti.
Then another deity addressed the Bhagavān with a verse:
“Why does this vast and great sacrifice
not match the worth of a gift given with tranquility?
How is it that a hundred thousand sacrifices of those who sacrifice a thousand times,
are not worth even a fraction of such a person's gift?”
“ददति ह्येके विषमे निविष्टाः,
छित्त्वा हत्वाथ शोचयित्वा।
सा दक्षिणाश्रुमुखा सदण्डा,
शमेन दत्तस्य नार्हम् एति।
एवं शतं सहस्राणां सहस्रयाजिनां,
कलामपि नार्हन्ति तथाविधस्य ते॥” इति।
“dadati hy eke viṣame niviṣṭāḥ,
chittvā hatvātha śocayitvā.
sā dakṣiṇāśrumukhā sadaṇḍā,
śamena dattasya nārham eti.
evaṃ śataṃ sahasrāṇāṃ sahasrayājināṃ,
kalām api nārhanti tathāvidhasya te॥” iti.
“Some, established in unrighteousness, give,
after cutting, killing, and causing sorrow.
That offering, given with tears and violence,
does not match the worth of a gift given with tranquility.
Thus, a hundred thousand sacrifices of those who sacrifice a thousand times,
are not worth even a fraction of such a person's gift.”
