“abṛhad upapannāḥ, vimuktāḥ sapta bhikṣavaḥ.
rāgadveṣaparikṣīṇāḥ, tīrṇā loke viṣaktikām” iti.
“Seven bhikṣus, liberated, have been reborn in abṛhat.
With passion and hatred destroyed, they have crossed over attachment in the world.”
“ke ca te ’tāriṣuḥ paṅkaṃ, mṛtyudheyaṃ sudustaram.
ke hitvā mānuṣaṃ dehaṃ, divyayogam atyagaman” iti.
“And who were they who crossed the swamp, the realm of death so hard to cross?
Who, having left the human body, passed over to a divine state?”
“upakaḥ palagaṇḍaś ca, pulkasaś ca te trayaḥ.
bhadrakaḥ bhadradevaś ca, bahudantī ca śṛṅgī.
te hitvā mānuṣaṃ dehaṃ, divyayogam atyagaman” iti.
“Upaka, Palagaṇḍa, and Pulkasa, those three;
Bhadraka, Bhadradeva, Bahudantin, and Śṛṅgin.
They, having left the human body, passed over to a divine state.”
“kuśalī bhāṣase teṣāṃ, mārapāśaprahāyiṇām.
kasya te dharmam ājñāya, acchidur bhavabandhanam” iti.
“You speak well of them, who have cast off Māra's snare.
Having understood whose Dharma did they cut the bond of existence?”
“nānyatra bhagavato, nānyatra tava śāsanāt.
yasya te dharmam ājñāya, acchidur bhavabandhanam.
yatra nāma ca rūpaṃ ca, aśeṣam uparudhyate.
taṃ te dharmam ihājñāya, acchidur bhavabandhanam” iti.
“From none other than the Bhagavān, from none other than your teaching.
Having understood your Dharma, they cut the bond of existence.
Where name and form cease without remainder—
having understood that Dharma of yours here, they cut the bond of existence.”
“gambhīrāṃ bhāṣase vācaṃ, durvijñānāṃ sudurbudhām.
kasya tvaṃ dharmam ājñāya, vācaṃ bhāṣasa īdṛśīm” iti.
“You speak a profound speech, hard to know, very hard to understand.
Having understood whose Dharma do you speak such words?”
“kumbhakāraḥ purā ’’sam, vaihaliṅge ghaṭīkāraḥ
mātāpitṛbhara āsaṃ, kāśyapasyopāsakaḥ.
virato maithunād dharmād, brahmacārī nirāmiṣaḥ.
abhavaṃ te sagrāmeyo, ’bhavaṃ te purā sakhā.
so ’ham etān prajānāmi, vimuktān sapta bhikṣūn.
rāgadveṣaparikṣīṇān, tīrṇān loke viṣaktikān” iti.
“Formerly I was a potter, Ghaṭīkāra in Vaihaliṅga.
I supported my parents, a lay follower of Kassapa (Buddha).
Abstaining from sex, a brahmacārin (adopter of a vow of chastity) free from sensual desire.
I was your fellow villager, I was your friend in the past.
It is I who know these seven liberated bhikkhus,
with passion and hatred destroyed, who have crossed over attachment in the world.”
“evam etat tadā ’’sīt, yathā bhāṣase bhārgava.
kumbhakāraḥ purā ’bhūḥ, vaihaliṅge ghaṭīkāraḥ.
mātāpitṛbhara ābhūḥ, kāśyapasyopāsakaḥ.
virato maithunād dharmād, brahmacārī nirāmiṣaḥ.
abhūr me sagrāmeyo, ’bhūr me purā sakhā” iti.
“So it was then, just as you say, O Bhārgava.
You were formerly a potter, Ghaṭīkāra in Vaihaliṅga.
You supported your parents, a lay follower of Kassapa.
Abstaining from sex, a brahmacārin free from sensual desire.
You were my fellow villager, you were my friend in the past.”
“evam etat purāṇānāṃ, sahāyānām abhūt saṅgamaḥ.
ubhayor bhāvitātmanoḥ, śarīrāntimadhāriṇoḥ” iti.
“Thus this was a meeting of old companions,
both of developed minds, bearing their final bodies.”
