saṃyuktanikāyaḥ 1.49 — mātsarasūktam
Saṃyukta Nikāya 1.49 — Covetous
“य इह मात्सरा लोके, कदर्याः परिभाषकाः।
अन्येषां ददताम्, अन्तरायकरा नराः॥
“ya iha mātsarā loke, kadaryāḥ paribhāṣakāḥ.
anyeṣāṃ dadatām, antarāyakarā narāḥ.
“Those in this world who are covetous, miserly, and criticizing,
people who create obstacles (antarāya) for others who are giving—
कीदृशस्तेषां विपाकः, सम्परायश्च कीदृशः।
भगवन्तं प्रष्टुमागम्य, कथं जानीम तद्वयम्” इति॥
kīdṛśas teṣāṃ vipākaḥ, samparāyaś ca kīdṛśaḥ.
bhagavantaṃ praṣṭum āgamya, kathaṃ jānīma tad vayam” iti.
What kind of results will they face, and what will be their future state?
Having come to ask the Bhagavān, how may we know this?”
“य इह मात्सरा लोके, कदर्याः परिभाषकाः।
अन्येषां ददताम्, अन्तरायकरा नराः॥
“ya iha mātsarā loke, kadaryāḥ paribhāṣakāḥ.
anyeṣāṃ dadatām, antarāyakarā narāḥ.
“Those in this world who are covetous, miserly, and criticizing,
people who create obstacles for others who are giving—
निरयं तिरश्चीनयोनिं, यमलोकमुपपद्यन्ते।
सचेत् प्राप्नुवन्ति मानुषत्वं, दरिद्रे जायन्ते कुले॥
nirayaṃ tiraścīnayoniṃ, yamalokam upapadyante.
sacet prāpnuvanti mānuṣatvaṃ, daridre jāyante kule.
They may end up in hell, the womb of a beast/animal, or the world of Yama.
If they attain a human state, they are born into a poor family.
चोलं पिण्डो रतिः क्रीडा, यत्र कृच्छ्रेण लभ्यते।
परत आशंसन्ते बालाः, तदपि तेषां न लभ्यते॥
colaṃ piṇḍo ratiḥ krīḍā, yatra kṛcchreṇa labhyate.
parata āśaṃsante bālāḥ, tad api teṣāṃ na labhyate.
Where garments, food, pleasure, and enjoyment are obtained with difficulty.
The immature then hope (to obtain those things) from others, but even that they do not get.
दृष्टे धर्मेऽयं विपाकः, सम्पराये च दुर्गतिः” इति॥
dṛṣṭe dharme ’yaṃ vipākaḥ, samparāye ca durgatiḥ” iti.
This is the result in the present life, and a bad destination in the future.”
“इति हैतद्विजानीमः, अन्यत्पृच्छाम गौतम।
य इह लब्ध्वा मानुषत्वं, वदान्या वीतमत्सराः॥
“iti haitad vijānīmaḥ, anyat pṛcchāma gautama.
ya iha labdhvā mānuṣatvaṃ, vadānyā vītamatsarāḥ.
“Thus we understand this. We ask another thing, O Gautama.
Those who, having attained a human state, are generous and free from covetousness,
बुद्धे प्रसन्ना धर्मे च, सङ्घे च तीव्रगौरवाः।
कीदृशस्तेषां विपाकः, सम्परायश्च कीदृशः।
भगवन्तं प्रष्टुमागम्य, कथं जानीम तद्वयम्” इति॥
buddhe prasannā dharme ca, saṅghe ca tīvragauravāḥ.
kīdṛśas teṣāṃ vipākaḥ, samparāyaś ca kīdṛśaḥ.
bhagavantaṃ praṣṭum āgamya, kathaṃ jānīma tad vayam” iti.
Who are delighted in the Buddha, also in the Dharma, and have intense reverence for the Saṅgha—
What is their result, and what is their future state?
Having come to ask the Bhagavān, how may we know this?”
“येऽत्र लब्ध्वा मानुषत्वं, वदान्या वीतमत्सराः।
बुद्धे प्रसन्ना धर्मे च, सङ्घे च तीव्रगौरवाः॥
“ye ’tra labdhvā mānuṣatvaṃ, vadānyā vītamatsarāḥ.
buddhe prasannā dharme ca, saṅghe ca tīvragauravāḥ.
“Those who, having attained a human state, are generous and free from stinginess,
Who are delighted in the Buddha, also in the Dharma, and intense reverence for the Saṅgha—
एतैः स्वर्गाः प्रकाशन्ते, यत्र ते उपपद्यन्ते॥
सचेत् प्राप्नुवन्ति मानुषत्वम्, आढ्ये जायन्ते कुले।
etaiḥ svargāḥ prakāśante, yatra te upapadyante.
sacet prāpnuvanti mānuṣatvam, āḍhye jāyante kule.
They cause the heavens to shine where they are reborn.
If they attain a human state, they are born into a wealthy family.
चोलं पिण्डो रतिः क्रीडा, यत्राकृच्छ्रेण लभ्यते॥
परसम्भृतेषु भोगेषु, वशवर्तिन इव मोदन्ते।
colaṃ piṇḍo ratiḥ krīḍā, yatrākṛcchreṇa labhyate.
parasambhṛteṣu bhogeṣu, vaśavartina iva modante.
Where clothing, food, pleasure, and enjoyment are obtained without difficulty.
They rejoice in pleasures provided by others, as if they could exercise power/control over those too.
दृष्टे धर्मेऽयं विपाकः, सम्पराये च सुगतिः” इति॥
dṛṣṭe dharme ’yaṃ vipākaḥ, samparāye ca sugatiḥ” iti.
This is the result in the present life, and a good destination in the future.”
