Saṃyukta Nikāya 2.8 — Trāyaṇa


श्रावस्तीनिदानम्। अथ खलु त्रायणो देवपुत्रः पुराणतीर्थकरोऽतिक्रान्तायां रात्र्यामतिक्रान्तवर्णः केवलकल्पं जेतवनमवभास्य भगवन्तमुपसमक्रामत्; उपसङ्क्रम्य भगवन्तमभिवाद्यैकान्तेऽस्थात्। एकान्ते स्थितः खलु त्रायणो देवपुत्रो भगवतोऽन्तिके इमा गाथा अभाषत —
śrāvastīnidānam. atha khalu trāyaṇo devaputraḥ purāṇatīrthakaro ’tikrāntāyāṃ rātryām atikrāntavarṇaḥ kevalakalpaṃ jetavanam avabhāsya bhagavantam upasamakrāmat; upasaṅkramya bhagavantam abhivādyaikānte ’sthāt. ekānte sthitaḥ khalu trāyaṇo devaputro bhagavato'antike imā gāthā abhāṣata —
The setting is Śrāvastī. Then, when the night was advanced, the devaputra Trāyaṇa, a former founder of a school, of surpassing beauty, illuminating the whole of Jeta's Grove, approached the Bhagavān. Having approached and paid homage to the Bhagavān, he stood to one side. Standing to one side, the devaputra Trāyaṇa spoke these verses in the presence of the Bhagavān:

“छिन्धि स्रोतः पराक्रम्य, कामान् प्रणुद ब्राह्मण।
न प्रहाय मुनिः कामान्, नैक्त्वमुपपद्यते।
कुर्याच्चेत् कुर्यादेतद्, दृढमेतत् पराक्रमेत्।
शिथिलो हि परिव्राजकः, भूय आकिरते रजः।
अकृतं दुष्कृतं श्रेयः, पश्चात्तपति दुष्कृतम्।
कृतं च सुकृतं श्रेयः, यत् कृत्वा नानु तप्यते।
कुशो यथा दुर्ग्रहीतः, हस्तमेवानुकृन्तति।
श्रामण्यं दुष्परामृष्टम्, निरयायोपकर्षति।
यत्किञ्चिच्छिथिलं कर्म, सङ्क्लिष्टं च यद् व्रतम्।
शङ्कासरं ब्रह्मचर्यम्, न तद् भवति महत्फलम्” इति।

“chindhi srotaḥ parākramya, kāmān praṇuda brāhmaṇa.
na prahāya muniḥ kāmān, naiktvam upapadyate.
kuryāc cet kuryād etad, dṛḍham etat parākramet.
śithilo hi parivrājakaḥ, bhūya ākirate rajaḥ.
akṛtaṃ duṣkṛtaṃ śreyaḥ, paścāt tapati duṣkṛtam.
kṛtaṃ ca sukṛtaṃ śreyaḥ, yat kṛtvā nānutapyate.
kuśo yathā durgṛhītaḥ, hastam evānukṛntati.
śrāmaṇyaṃ duṣparāmṛṣṭam, nirayāyopakarṣati.
yat kiñcic chithilaṃ karma, saṅkliṣṭaṃ ca yad vratam.
śaṅkāsaraṃ brahmacaryam, na tad bhavati mahatphalam” iti.

“Striving, cut the stream; dispel sensual pleasures, O Brahmin.
Without abandoning sensual pleasures, a sage does not attain solitude.
If one should act, one should do it; one should strive at it firmly.
For a lax wanderer scatters more dust.
A misdeed undone is better; a misdeed torments later.
A good deed done is better, which, having done, one does not regret.
Just as poorly grasped kuśa grass cuts the hand,
so poorly practiced asceticism drags one down to hell.
Whatever deed is lax, whatever vow is defiled,
a holy life of doubt—that does not bring great fruit.”

इदमवोचत् त्रायणो देवपुत्रः; इदमुक्त्वा भगवन्तमभिवाद्य प्रदक्षिणं कृत्वा तत्रैवान्तरधात् इति।
idam avocat trāyaṇo devaputraḥ; idam uktvā bhagavantam abhivādya pradakṣiṇaṃ kṛtvā tatraivāntaradhāt iti.
The devaputra Trāyaṇa said this; and having said this, he paid homage to the Bhagavān, circumambulated him to the right, and vanished right there.

अथ खलु भगवान् तस्या रात्र्या अत्ययेन भिक्षूनामन्त्रयत् — “इमां, भिक्षवो, रात्रिं त्रायणो नाम देवपुत्रः पुराणतीर्थकरोऽतिक्रान्तायां रात्र्यामतिक्रान्तवर्णः केवलकल्पं जेतवनमवभास्य मामुपसमक्रामत्; उपसङ्क्रम्य मामभिवाद्यैकान्तेऽस्थात्। एकान्ते स्थितः खलु, भिक्षवः, त्रायणो देवपुत्रो मम सन्तिके इमा गाथा अभाषत —
atha khalu bhagavān tasyā rātryā atyayena bhikṣūn āmantrayat — “imāṃ, bhikṣavo, rātriṃ trāyaṇo nāma devaputraḥ purāṇatīrthakaro ’tikrāntāyāṃ rātryām atikrāntavarṇaḥ kevalakalpaṃ jetavanam avabhāsya mām upasamakrāmat; upasaṅkramya mām abhivādyaikānte ’sthāt. ekānte sthitaḥ khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, trāyaṇo devaputro mamāntike imā gāthā abhāṣata —
Then, when the night had passed, the Bhagavān addressed the monks: “Monks, this night, a devaputra named Trāyaṇa, a former founder of a school, of surpassing beauty, illuminating the whole of Jeta's Grove, approached me. Having approached and paid homage to me, he stood to one side. Standing to one side, monks, the devaputra Trāyaṇa spoke these verses in my presence:

“छिन्धि स्रोतः पराक्रम्य, कामान् प्रणुद ब्राह्मण।

“idam avocad, bhikṣavaḥ, trāyaṇo devaputraḥ, idam uktvā mām abhivādya pradakṣiṇaṃ kṛtvā tatraivāntaradhāt. udgṛhṇīta, bhikṣavaḥ, trāyaṇagāthāḥ; paryavāpnuta, bhikṣavaḥ, trāyaṇagāthāḥ; dhārayata, bhikṣavaḥ, trāyaṇagāthāḥ. arthasaṃhitā, bhikṣavaḥ, trāyaṇagāthā ādibrahmacaryikāḥ” iti.
“The devaputra Trāyaṇa said this, monks, and having said this, he paid homage to me, circumambulated me to the right, and vanished right there. Learn, monks, the Trāyaṇa verses; master, monks, the Trāyaṇa verses; remember, monks, the Trāyaṇa verses. The Trāyaṇa verses, monks, are beneficial and primary/fundamental to the holy life.”
