evaṃ mayā śrutam — ekasmin samaye bhagavān vaiśālyāṃ viharati sma bahirnagare aparapure vanakhaṇḍe .

tena khalu punaḥ samayena sunakṣatraḥ licchaviputraḥ aciraprakrāntaḥ bhavati asmāt dharmavinayāt . saḥ vaiśālyāṃ pariṣadi evaṃ vācaṃ bhāṣate —

na asti śramaṇasya gautamasya uttaraṃ manuṣyadharmāt alam āryajñānadarśanaviśeṣaḥ . tarkaparyāhataṃ śramaṇaḥ gautamaḥ dharmaṃ deśayati mīmāṃsānucaritaṃ svayampratibhānam . yasya ca khalu asya arthāya dharmaḥ deśitaḥ saḥ niryāti tatkarasya samyak duḥkhakṣayāya iti .

atha khalu āyuṣmān śāriputraḥ pūrvāhṇasamaye paridhāya pātracīvaram ādāya vaiśālīṃ piṇḍāya prāvikṣat. aśrauṣīt khalu āyuṣmān śāriputraḥ sunakṣatrasya licchaviputrasya vaiśālyāṃ pariṣadi evaṃ vācaṃ bhāṣamāṇasya — na asti śramaṇasya gautamasya uttari manuṣyadharmāt alam āryajñānadarśanaviśeṣaḥ . tarkaparyāhataṃ śramaṇaḥ gautamaḥ dharmaṃ deśayati mīmāṃsānucaritaṃ svayampratibhānam . yasya ca khalu asya arthāya dharmaḥ deśitaḥ saḥ niryāti tatkarasya samyak duḥkhakṣayāya iti .

atha khalu āyuṣmān śāriputraḥ vaiśālyāṃ piṇḍāya caritvā paścādbhaktam piṇḍapātapratikrāntaḥ bhagavantam upasaṃcakrāma ; upasaṃkramya bhagavantam abhivādya ekānte nyaṣīdat . ekānte niṣaṇṇaḥ khalu āyuṣmān śāriputraḥ bhagavantam etad avocat — sunakṣatraḥ, bhadanta, licchaviputraḥ aciraprakrāntaḥ asmāt dharmavinayāt . saḥ vaiśālyāṃ pariṣadi evaṃ vācaṃ bhāṣate — na asti śramaṇasya gautamasya uttari manuṣyadharmāt alam āryajñānadarśanaviśeṣaḥ . tarkaparyāhataṃ śramaṇaḥ gautamaḥ dharmaṃ deśayati mīmāṃsānucaritaṃ svayampratibhānam . yasya ca khalu asya arthāya dharmaḥ deśitaḥ saḥ niryāti tatkarasya samyak duḥkhakṣayāya iti .

krodhanaḥ hi eṣaḥ, śāriputra, sunakṣatraḥ mūrkhapuruṣaḥ . krodhāt ca punar asya eṣā vāk bhāṣitā . avarṇaṃ bhāṣiṣye iti khalu, śāriputra, sunakṣatraḥ mūrkhapuruṣaḥ varṇam eva tathāgatasya bhāṣate . varṇaḥ hi eṣaḥ, śāriputra, tathāgatasya yaḥ evaṃ vadet — yasya ca khalu asya arthāya dharmaḥ deśitaḥ saḥ niryāti tatkarasya samyak duḥkhakṣayāya iti .

ayam api hi nāma, śāriputra, sunakṣatrasya mūrkhapuruṣasya mayi dharmānvayaḥ na bhaviṣyati — iti api saḥ bhagavān arhan samyaksambuddhaḥ vidyācaraṇasaṃpannaḥ sugataḥ lokavid anuttaraḥ puruṣadamyasārathiḥ, śāstā devamanuṣyāṇām, buddhaḥ bhagavān iti .

ayam api hi nāma, śāriputra, sunakṣatrasya mūrkhapuruṣasya mayi dharmānvayaḥ na bhaviṣyati — iti api saḥ bhagavān anekavihitam ṛddhividhaṃ pratyanubhavati — ekaḥ api bhūtvā bahudhā bhavati, bahudhā api bhūtvā ekaḥ bhavati ; āvirbhāvam, tirobhāvam ; tiraḥkuḍyaṃ tiraḥprākāraṃ tiraḥparvatam asajjamānaḥ gacchati, tadyathā api ākāśe ; pṛthivyām api unmajjananimajjanaṃ karoti, tadyathā api udake ; udake api abhidyamāne gacchati, tadyathā api pṛthivyām ; ākāśe api paryaṅkena krāmati, tadyathā api pakṣī śakuniḥ ; imau api candrasūryau evaṃmaharddhikau evaṃmahānubhāvau pāṇinā parāmṛśati parimārjati ; yāvat brahmalokāt api kāyena vaśaṃ vartayati iti .

ayam api hi nāma, śāriputra, sunakṣatrasya mūrkhapuruṣasya mayi dharmānvayaḥ na bhaviṣyati — iti api saḥ bhagavān divyena śrotradhātunā viśuddhena atikrāntamānuṣikena ubhau śabdau śṛṇoti — divyaṃ ca mānuṣaṃ ca, ye dūre antike ca iti .

ayam api hi nāma, śāriputra, sunakṣatrasya mūrkhapuruṣasya mayi dharmānvayaḥ na bhaviṣyati — iti api saḥ bhagavān parasattvānāṃ parapudgalānāṃ cetasā cetaḥ paryetya prajānāti — sarāgaṃ vā cittaṃ sarāgaṃ cittam iti prajānāti, vītarāgaṃ vā cittaṃ vītarāgaṃ cittam iti prajānāti ; sadveṣaṃ vā cittaṃ sadveṣaṃ cittam iti prajānāti, vītadveṣaṃ vā cittaṃ vītadveṣaṃ cittam iti prajānāti ; samohaṃ vā cittaṃ samohaṃ cittam iti prajānāti, vītamohaṃ vā cittaṃ vītamohaṃ cittam iti prajānāti ; saṃkṣiptaṃ vā cittaṃ saṃkṣiptaṃ cittam iti prajānāti, vikṣiptaṃ vā cittaṃ vikṣiptaṃ cittam iti prajānāti ; mahadgataṃ vā cittaṃ mahadgataṃ cittam iti prajānāti, amahadgataṃ vā cittaṃ amahadgataṃ cittam iti prajānāti ; sottaraṃ vā cittaṃ sottaraṃ cittam iti prajānāti, anuttaraṃ vā cittaṃ anuttaraṃ cittam iti prajānāti ; samāhitaṃ vā cittaṃ samāhitaṃ cittam iti prajānāti, asamāhitaṃ vā cittaṃ asamāhitaṃ cittam iti prajānāti ; vimuktaṃ vā cittaṃ vimuktaṃ cittam iti prajānāti, avimuktaṃ vā cittaṃ avimuktaṃ cittam iti prajānāti iti .

daśa khalu punar imāni, śāriputra, tathāgatasya tathāgatabalāni yaiḥ balaiḥ samanvitaḥ tathāgataḥ ārṣabhaṃ sthānaṃ pratijānāti, pariṣatsu siṃhanādaṃ nadati, brahmacakraṃ pravartayati . katamāni daśa ?

iha, śāriputra, tathāgataḥ sthānaṃ ca sthānatvena asthānaṃ ca asthānatvena yathābhūtaṃ prajānāti . yad api, śāriputra, tathāgataḥ sthānaṃ ca sthānatvena asthānaṃ ca asthānatvena yathābhūtaṃ prajānāti, idam api, śāriputra, tathāgatasya tathāgatabalaṃ bhavati yad balam āgamya tathāgataḥ ārṣabhaṃ sthānaṃ pratijānāti, pariṣatsu siṃhanādaṃ nadati, brahmacakraṃ pravartayati .

punaḥ ca aparam, śāriputra, tathāgataḥ atītānāgatapratyutpannānāṃ karmasamādānānāṃ sthānaśaḥ hetuśaḥ vipākaṃ yathābhūtaṃ prajānāti . yad api, śāriputra, tathāgataḥ atītānāgatapratyutpannānāṃ karmasamādānānāṃ sthānaśaḥ hetuśaḥ vipākaṃ yathābhūtaṃ prajānāti, idam api, śāriputra, tathāgatasya tathāgatabalaṃ bhavati yad balam āgamya tathāgataḥ ārṣabhaṃ sthānaṃ pratijānāti, pariṣatsu siṃhanādaṃ nadati, brahmacakraṃ pravartayati .

punaḥ ca aparam, śāriputra, tathāgataḥ sarvatragāminīṃ pratipadaṃ yathābhūtaṃ prajānāti . yad api, śāriputra, tathāgataḥ sarvatragāminīṃ pratipadaṃ yathābhūtaṃ prajānāti, idam api, śāriputra, tathāgatasya tathāgatabalaṃ bhavati yad balam āgamya tathāgataḥ ārṣabhaṃ sthānaṃ pratijānāti, pariṣatsu siṃhanādaṃ nadati, brahmacakraṃ pravartayati .

punaḥ ca aparam, śāriputra, tathāgataḥ anekadhātunānādhātulokaṃ yathābhūtaṃ prajānāti . yad api, śāriputra, tathāgataḥ anekadhātunānādhātulokaṃ yathābhūtaṃ prajānāti, idam api, śāriputra, tathāgatasya tathāgatabalaṃ bhavati yad balam āgamya tathāgataḥ ārṣabhaṃ sthānaṃ pratijānāti, pariṣatsu siṃhanādaṃ nadati, brahmacakraṃ pravartayati .

punaḥ ca aparam, śāriputra, tathāgataḥ sattvānāṃ nānādhimuktitāṃ yathābhūtaṃ prajānāti . yad api, śāriputra, tathāgataḥ sattvānāṃ nānādhimuktitāṃ yathābhūtaṃ prajānāti, idam api, śāriputra, tathāgatasya tathāgatabalaṃ bhavati yad balam āgamya tathāgataḥ ārṣabhaṃ sthānaṃ pratijānāti, pariṣatsu siṃhanādaṃ nadati, brahmacakraṃ pravartayati .

punaḥ ca aparam, śāriputra, tathāgataḥ dhyānavimokṣasamādhisamāpattīnāṃ saṃkleśaṃ vyavadānaṃ utthānaṃ yathābhūtaṃ prajānāti . yad api, śāriputra, tathāgataḥ dhyānavimokṣasamādhisamāpattīnāṃ saṃkleśaṃ vyavadānaṃ utthānaṃ yathābhūtaṃ prajānāti, idam api, śāriputra, tathāgatasya tathāgatabalaṃ bhavati yad balam āgamya tathāgataḥ ārṣabhaṃ sthānaṃ pratijānāti, pariṣatsu siṃhanādaṃ nadati, brahmacakraṃ pravartayati .

punaḥ ca aparam, śāriputra, tathāgataḥ anekavihitaṃ pūrvanivāsam anusmarati, tadyathā — ekām api jātiṃ dve api jātī tisraḥ api jātīḥ catasraḥ api jātīḥ pañca api jātīḥ daśa api jātīḥ viṃśatim api jātīḥ triṃśatam api jātīḥ catvāriṃśatam api jātīḥ pañcāśatam api jātīḥ jātiśatam api jātisahasram api jātiśatasahasram api anekeṣu api saṃvartakalpeṣu anekeṣu api vivartakalpeṣu anekeṣu api saṃvartavivartakalpeṣu — amutra āsam evaṃnāmā evaṃgotraḥ evaṃvarṇaḥ evamāhāraḥ evaṃsukhaduḥkhapratisaṃvedī evamāyuparyantaḥ, saḥ tataḥ cyutaḥ amutra udapatsi ; tatra api āsam evaṃnāmā evaṃgotraḥ evaṃvarṇaḥ evamāhāraḥ evaṃsukhaduḥkhapratisaṃvedī evamāyuparyantaḥ, saḥ tataḥ cyutaḥ iha upapannaḥ iti . iti sākāraṃ soddeśam anekavihitaṃ pūrvanivāsam anusmarati . yad api, śāriputra, tathāgataḥ anekavihitaṃ pūrvanivāsam anusmarati, tadyathā — ekām api jātiṃ dve api jātī … iti sākāraṃ soddeśam anekavihitaṃ pūrvanivāsam anusmarati, idam api, śāriputra, tathāgatasya tathāgatabalaṃ bhavati yad balam āgamya tathāgataḥ ārṣabhaṃ sthānaṃ pratijānāti, pariṣatsu siṃhanādaṃ nadati, brahmacakraṃ pravartayati .

yaḥ khalu mām, śāriputra, evaṃ jānānam evaṃ paśyantam evaṃ vadet — na asti śramaṇasya gautamasya uttari manuṣyadharmāt alam āryajñānadarśanaviśeṣaḥ ; tarkaparyāhataṃ śramaṇaḥ gautamaḥ dharmaṃ deśayati mīmāṃsānucaritaṃ svayampratibhānam iti, tāṃ, śāriputra, vācam aprahāya tat cittam aprahāya tāṃ dṛṣṭim apratiniḥsṛjya yathābhṛtaṃ nikṣiptaḥ evaṃ narake . tadyathā api, śāriputra, bhikṣuḥ śīlasaṃpannaḥ samādhisaṃpannaḥ prajñāsaṃpannaḥ dṛṣṭe eva dharme ājñām ārādhayet, evaṃ saṃpadam idaṃ, śāriputra, vadāmi . tāṃ vācam aprahāya, tat cittam aprahāya tāṃ dṛṣṭim apratiniḥsṛjya yathābhṛtaṃ nikṣiptaḥ evaṃ narake .

ye khalu punaḥ te antarāyikāḥ dharmāḥ uktāḥ, tān pratisevamānasya na alam antarāyāya iti . tatra vata māṃ śramaṇaḥ vā brāhmaṇaḥ vā devaḥ vā māraḥ vā brahmā vā kaścit vā loke sahadharmeṇa praticodayiṣyati iti nimittam etat, śāriputra, na samanupaśyāmi . etad aham, śāriputra, nimittam asamanupaśyan kṣemaprāptaḥ abhayaprāptaḥ vaiśāradyaprāptaḥ viharāmi .

saḥ śāṇāni api dhārayāmi, maśāṇāni api dhārayāmi, śavadūṣyāṇi api dhārayāmi, pāṃśukūlāni api dhārayāmi, tirīṭāni api dhārayāmi, ajinam api dhārayāmi, ajinakṣipam api dhārayāmi, kuśacīram api dhārayāmi, valkacīram api dhārayāmi, phalakacīram api dhārayāmi, keśakambalam api dhārayāmi, vālakambalam api dhārayāmi, ulūkapakṣam api dhārayāmi ; keśaśmaśruluñcakaḥ api asmi keśaśmaśruluñcanānuyogam anuyuktaḥ ; ūrdhvasthakaḥ api asmi āsanapratikṣiptaḥ ; utkuṭikaḥ api asmi utkuṭikapradhānam anuyuktaḥ ; kaṇṭakāpāśrayikaḥ api asmi, kaṇṭakāpāśraye śayyāṃ kalpayāmi ; sāyaṃtṛtīyakam api udakāvataraṇānuyogam anuyuktaḥ viharāmi — iti evaṃrūpam anekavihitaṃ kāyasya ātāpanaparitāpanānuyogam anuyuktaḥ viharāmi . idam asya me, śāriputra, tapasvitāyai bhavati .

tatra eva me idam, śāriputra, rūkṣatve bhavati — anekavarṣagaṇikaṃ rajojālaṃ kāye saṃnicitaṃ bhavati paṭalajātam . tadyathā api, śāriputra, tindukasthāṇuḥ anekavarṣagaṇikaḥ saṃnicitaḥ bhavati paṭalajātaḥ, evam eva asya me, śāriputra, anekavarṣagaṇikaṃ rajojālaṃ kāye saṃnicitaṃ bhavati paṭalajātam . tasya mama, śāriputra, na evaṃ bhavati — aho vata aham idaṃ rajojālaṃ pāṇinā parimārjeyam, anye vā punar me idaṃ rajojālaṃ pāṇinā parimārjeyuḥ iti . evam api me, śāriputra, na bhavati . idam asya me, śāriputra, rūkṣatve bhavati .

tatra eva me idam, śāriputra, jugupsatve bhavati — saḥ khalu aham, śāriputra, smṛtimān eva abhikrāmāmi, smṛtimān eva pratikrāmāmi, yāvat udakabindum api me dayā pratyupasthitā bhavati — mā ahaṃ kṣudrakān prāṇinaḥ viṣamagatān saṃghātam āpādiṣam iti . idam asya me, śāriputra, jugupsatve bhavati .

tatra eva me idam, śāriputra, praviviktatve bhavati — saḥ khalu aham, śāriputra, anyataram araṇyāyatanam adhyavagāhya viharāmi . yadā paśyāmi gopālakaṃ vā paśupālakaṃ vā tṛṇahārakaṃ vā kāṣṭhahārakaṃ vā vanakārmikaṃ vā, vanena vanaṃ gahanena gahanaṃ nimnena nimnaṃ sthalena sthalaṃ saṃpatāmi . tat kasya hetoḥ ? mā māṃ te adrākṣuḥ ahaṃ ca mā tān adrākṣam iti . tadyathā api, śāriputra, āraṇyakaḥ mṛgaḥ manuṣyān dṛṣṭvā vanena vanaṃ gahanena gahanaṃ nimnena nimnaṃ sthalena sthalaṃ saṃpatati ; evam eva khalu aham, śāriputra, yadā paśyāmi gopālakaṃ vā paśupālakaṃ vā tṛṇahārakaṃ vā kāṣṭhahārakaṃ vā vanakārmikaṃ vā vanena vanaṃ gahanena gahanaṃ nimnena nimnaṃ sthalena sthalaṃ saṃpatāmi . tat kasya hetoḥ ? mā māṃ te adrākṣuḥ ahaṃ ca mā tān adrākṣam iti . idam asya me, śāriputra, praviviktatve bhavati .

saḥ khalu aham, śāriputra, anyataraṃ bhīṣaṇakaṃ vanakhaṇḍam adhyavagāhya viharāmi . tatra idam, śāriputra, bhīṣaṇakasya vanakhaṇḍasya bhīṣaṇakatve bhavati — yaḥ kaścit avītarāgaḥ taṃ vanakhaṇḍaṃ praviśati, yadbhūyasā lomāni hṛṣyanti . saḥ khalu aham, śāriputra, yāḥ tāḥ rātrayaḥ śītāḥ haimantikāḥ antarāṣṭakāḥ himapātasamayāḥ tathārūpāsu rātriṣu rātrāv abhyavakāśe viharāmi, divā vanakhaṇḍe ; grīṣmāṇāṃ paścime māse divā abhyavakāśe viharāmi, rātrau vanakhaṇḍe . api khalu mām, śāriputra, iyam anāścaryagāthā iṣmāṇāṃ paścime māse divā abhyavakāśe viharāmi, rātrau vanaṣaṇḍe . api svid mām, śāriputra, iyam anāścaryagāthā pratibhāṣati sma pūrvaṃ aśrutapūrvā —

sutaptaḥ susvinnaḥ ca eva, ekaḥ bhīṣaṇake vane ; nagnaḥ na ca agnim āsīnaḥ, eṣaṇāprasṛtaḥ muniḥ iti .

saḥ khalu aham, śāriputra, śmaśāne śayyāṃ kalpayāmi śavāsthīni upadhāya . api khalu mām, śāriputra, grāmacaṇḍālāḥ upasaṃkramya niṣṭhīvanti api, avamūtrayanti api, pāṃśunā api avakiranti, karṇaśrotobhyaḥ api śalākāṃ praveśayanti . na khalu punar aham, śāriputra, abhijānāmi teṣu pāpakaṃ cittam utpādayitā . idam asya me, śāriputra, upekṣāvihāratve bhavati .

santi khalu punaḥ, śāriputra, eke śramaṇabrāhmaṇāḥ evaṃvādinaḥ evaṃdṛṣṭayaḥ — āhāreṇa śuddhiḥ iti . te evam āhuḥ — kolaiḥ yāpayāmaḥ iti . te kolam api khādanti, kolacūrṇam api khādanti, kolodakam api pibanti — anekavihitām api kolavikṛtiṃ paribhuñjate . abhijānāmi khalu punar aham, śāriputra, ekam eva kolam āhāram āhārayitā . syāt khalu punar te, śāriputra, evam — mahān nūna tena samayena kolaḥ abhūt iti . na khalu punar etad, śāriputra, evaṃ draṣṭavyam . tadā api etatparamakaḥ eva kolaḥ abhūt tadyathā api etarhi . tasya mama, śāriputra, ekam eva kolam āhāram āhārayataḥ adhimātrakṛśatvaṃ prāptaḥ kāyaḥ bhavati . tadyathā api nāma āśītikaparvāṇi vā kālaparvāṇi vā ; evam eva me aṅgapratyaṅgāni bhavanti tasyāḥ eva alpāhāratāyāḥ . tadyathā api nāma uṣṭrapadam ; evam eva me āniṣadaṃ bhavati tasyāḥ eva alpāhāratāyāḥ . tadyathā api nāma vartanāvalī ; evam eva me pṛṣṭhakaṇṭakaḥ unnatāvanataḥ bhavati tasyāḥ eva alpāhāratāyāḥ . tadyathā api nāma jarāśālāyāḥ gopānāsyaḥ avarugṇavirugṇāḥ bhavanti ; evam eva me parśukāḥ avarugṇavirugṇāḥ bhavanti tasyāḥ eva alpāhāratāyāḥ . tadyathā api nāma gambhīre udapāne udakatārakāḥ gambhīragatāḥ avakṣīṇāḥ dṛśyante ; evam eva akṣikūpayoḥ akṣitārake gambhīragate avakṣīṇe dṛśyete tasyāḥ eva alpāhāratāyāḥ . tadyathā api nāma tiktālābūḥ āmakacchinnaḥ vātātapena saṃsphuṭitaḥ bhavati sammlānaḥ ; evam eva me śīrṣatvak saṃsphuṭitā bhavati saṃmlānā tasyāḥ eva alpāhāratāyāḥ . saḥ khalu aham, śāriputra, udaratvacaṃ parimārkṣyāmi iti pṛṣṭhakaṇṭakam eva parigṛhṇāmi, pṛṣṭhakaṇṭakaṃ parimārkṣyāmi iti udaratvacam eva parigṛhṇāmi, yāvat me, śāriputra, udaratvak pṛṣṭhakaṇṭakam ālīnā bhavati tasyāḥ eva alpāhāratāyāḥ . saḥ khalu aham, śāriputra, varcaḥ vā mūtraṃ vā kariṣyāmi iti tatra eva avakubjaḥ prapatāmi tasyāḥ eva alpāhāratāyāḥ . saḥ khalu aham, śāriputra, tam eva kāyam āśvāsayn pāṇinā gātrāṇi anumārjmi . tasya mama, śāriputra, pāṇinā gātrāṇi anumārjataḥ pūtimūlāni lomāni kāyāt patanti tasyāḥ eva alpāhāratāyāḥ .

santi khalu punaḥ, śāriputra, eke śramaṇabrāhmaṇāḥ evaṃvādinaḥ evaṃdṛṣṭayaḥ — saṃsāreṇa śuddhiḥ iti . na khalu punaḥ saḥ, śāriputra, saṃsāraḥ sulabharūpaḥ yaḥ mayā asaṃsṛtapūrvaḥ anena dīrgheṇa adhvānā, anyatra śuddhāvāsaiḥ devaiḥ . śuddhāvāseṣu ca ahaṃ, śāriputra, deveṣu saṃsareyam, na imaṃ lokaṃ punar āgaccheyam .

santi khalu punaḥ, śāriputra, eke śramaṇabrāhmaṇāḥ evaṃvādinaḥ evaṃdṛṣṭayaḥ — agniparicaryayā śuddhiḥ iti . na khalu punaḥ saḥ, śāriputra, agniḥ sulabharūpaḥ yaḥ mayā aparicīrṇapūrvaḥ anena dīrgheṇa adhvānā, tat ca khalu rājñā vā satā kṣatriyeṇa mūrdhābhiṣiktena brāhmaṇena vā mahāśālena .

santi khalu punaḥ, śāriputra, eke śramaṇabrāhmaṇāḥ evaṃvādinaḥ evaṃdṛṣṭayaḥ — yāvat eva ayaṃ bhavān puruṣaḥ daharaḥ bhavati yuvā śiśukṛṣṇakeśaḥ bhadreṇa yauvanena samanvitaḥ prathamena vayasā tāvat eva parameṇa prajñāvaiyaktyena samanvitaḥ bhavati . yataḥ ca khalu ayaṃ bhavān puruṣaḥ jīrṇaḥ bhavati vṛddhaḥ mahallakaḥ adhvāgataḥ vayaḥanuprāptaḥ, āśītikaḥ vā nāvatikaḥ vā varṣaśatikaḥ vā jātyā, atha tasmāt prajñāvaiyaktyāt parihīyate iti . na khalu punar etad, śāriputra, evaṃ draṣṭavyam . ahaṃ khalu punaḥ, śāriputra, etarhi jīrṇaḥ vṛddhaḥ mahallakaḥ adhvāgataḥ vayaḥanuprāptaḥ, āśītikaṃ me vayaḥ vartate . iha me syuḥ, śāriputra, catvāraḥ śrāvakāḥ varṣaśatāyuṣaḥ varṣaśatajīvinaḥ, paramayā smṛtyā ca gatyā ca dhṛtyā ca samanvitāḥ parameṇa ca prajñāvaiyaktyena . tadyathā api, śāriputra, dṛḍhadharmā dhanurgrahaḥ śikṣitaḥ kṛtahastaḥ kṛtopāsanaḥ laghukena asanena alpakṛcchreṇa eva tiryak tālacchāyām atipātayet, evam adhimātrasmṛtimantaḥ evam adhimātragatimantaḥ evam adhimātradhṛtimantaḥ evaṃ parameṇa prajñāvaiyaktyena samanvāgatāḥ . te māṃ caturṇāṃ smṛtyupasthānānām upādāya upādāya praśnaṃ pṛccheyuḥ, pṛṣṭaḥ pṛṣṭaḥ ca ahaṃ teṣāṃ vyākuryām, vyākṛtaṃ ca me vyākṛtatvena dhārayeyuḥ, na ca māṃ dvitīyakam uttari pratipṛccheyuḥ . anyatra aśitapītakhāditasvāditāt anyatra uccārapraśrāvakarmaṇaḥ, anyatra nidrāklamaprativinodanāt aparyādatta eva asya, śāriputra, tathāgatasya dharmadeśanā, aparyādatta eva asya tathāgatasya dharmapadavyañjanam, aparyādatta eva asya tathāgatasya praśnapratibhānam . atha me te catvāraḥ śrāvakāḥ varṣaśatāyuṣaḥ varṣaśatajīvinaḥ varṣaśatasya atyayena kālaṃ kuryuḥ . mañcakena cet api māṃ, śāriputra, parihariṣyatha, na eva asti tathāgatasya prajñāvaiyaktyasya anyathātvam .

yat khalu tad, śāriputra, samyag vadamānaḥ vadet — asaṃmohadharmā sattvaḥ loke utpannaḥ bahujanahitāya bahujanasukhāya lokānukampāyai arthāya hitāya sukhāya devamanuṣyāṇām iti, mām eva tat samyag vadamānaḥ vadet — asaṃmohadharmā sattvaḥ loke utpannaḥ bahujanahitāya bahujanasukhāya lokānukampāyai arthāya hitāya sukhāya devamanuṣyāṇām iti .

tena khalu punaḥ samayena āyuṣmān nāgasamālaḥ bhagavataḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ sthitaḥ bhavati bhagavantaṃ vījamānaḥ . atha khalu āyuṣmān nāgasamālaḥ bhagavantam etad avocat —

āścaryam, bhadanta, adbhutam, bhadanta . api hi me, bhadanta, imaṃ dharmaparyāyaṃ śrutvā lomāni hṛṣṭāni . kiṃnāmā ayaṃ, bhadanta, dharmaparyāyaḥ iti ?

tasmāt iha tvam, nāgasamāla, imaṃ dharmaparyāyaṃ lomaharṣaṇaparyāyaḥ iti eva enaṃ dhāraya iti .

idam avocat bhagavān . āttamanāḥ āyuṣmān nāgasamālaḥ bhagavataḥ bhāṣitam abhyanandat iti .
