madhyamanikāyaḥ 11 - kṣudrasiṃhanādasūtram

evaṃ mayā śrutam — ekasmin samaye bhagavān śrāvastyāṃ viharati sma jetavane anāthapiṇḍadasya ārāme . tatra khalu bhagavān bhikṣūn āmantrayata — bhikṣavaḥ iti .

bhadanta iti te bhikṣavaḥ bhagavataḥ pratyaśrauṣuḥ . bhagavān etad avocat —

iha eva, bhikṣavaḥ, śramaṇaḥ, iha dvitīyaḥ śramaṇaḥ, iha tṛtīyaḥ śramaṇaḥ, iha caturthaḥ śramaṇaḥ ; śūnyāḥ parapravādāḥ śramaṇaiḥ anyaiḥ iti . evam etaṃ, bhikṣavaḥ, samyak siṃhanādaṃ nadata .

sthānaṃ khalu punar etat, bhikṣavaḥ, vidyate yat anyatīrthyāḥ parivrājakāḥ evaṃ vadeyuḥ — kaḥ punaḥ āyuṣmatām āśvāsaḥ, kiṃ balam, yena yūyam āyuṣmantaḥ evaṃ vadatha — iha eva śramaṇaḥ, iha dvitīyaḥ śramaṇaḥ, iha tṛtīyaḥ śramaṇaḥ, iha caturthaḥ śramaṇaḥ ; śūnyāḥ parapravādāḥ śramaṇaiḥ anyaiḥ iti ? evaṃvādinaḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, anyatīrthyāḥ parivrājakāḥ evam vacanīyāḥ — santi khalu naḥ, āyuṣmantaḥ, tena bhagavatā jānatā paśyatā arhatā samyaksambuddhena catvāraḥ dharmāḥ ākhyātāḥ yān vayam ātmani sampaśyantaḥ evaṃ vadāmaḥ —

iha eva śramaṇaḥ, iha dvitīyaḥ śramaṇaḥ, iha tṛtīyaḥ śramaṇaḥ, iha caturthaḥ śramaṇaḥ ; śūnyāḥ parapravādāḥ śramaṇaiḥ anyaiḥ iti . katame catvāraḥ ? asti khalu naḥ, āyuṣmantaḥ, śāstari prasādaḥ, asti dharme prasādaḥ, asti śīleṣu paripūrakāritā ; sahadhārmikāḥ khalu punaḥ priyāḥ manojñāḥ — gṛhasthāḥ ca eva pravrajitāḥ ca . ime khalu naḥ, āyuṣmantaḥ, tena bhagavatā jānatā paśyatā arhatā samyaksambuddhena catvāraḥ dharmāḥ ākhyātāḥ yān vayam ātmani sampaśyantaḥ evaṃ vadāmaḥ — iha eva śramaṇaḥ, iha dvitīyaḥ śramaṇaḥ, iha tṛtīyaḥ śramaṇaḥ, iha caturthaḥ śramaṇaḥ ; śūnyāḥ parapravādāḥ śramaṇaiḥ anyaiḥ iti .

sthānaṃ khalu punar etat, bhikṣavaḥ, vidyate yat anyatīrthyāḥ parivrājakāḥ evaṃ vadeyuḥ — asmākam api khalu, āyuṣmantaḥ, asti śāstari prasādaḥ yaḥ asmākaṃ śāstā, asmākam api asti dharme prasādaḥ yaḥ asmākaṃ dharmaḥ, vayam api śīleṣu paripūrakāriṇaḥ yāni asmākaṃ śīlāni, asmākam api sahadhārmikāḥ priyāḥ manojñāḥ — gṛhasthāḥ ca eva pravrajitāḥ ca . iha naḥ, āyuṣmantaḥ, kaḥ viśeṣaḥ kaḥ viparyāsaḥ kiṃ nānākaraṇaṃ yad idam yuṣmākaṃ ca eva asmākaṃ ca iti ?

evaṃvādinaḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, anyatīrthyāḥ parivrājakāḥ evam vacanīyāḥ — kiṃ punar āyuṣmantaḥ, ekā niṣṭhā, utāho pṛthak niṣṭhāḥ iti ? samyak vyākurvāṇāḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, anyatīrthyāḥ parivrājakāḥ evaṃ vyākuryuḥ — ekā āyuṣmantaḥ, niṣṭhā, na pṛthak niṣṭhāḥ iti .

sā punar āyuṣmantaḥ, niṣṭhā sarāgasya utāho vītarāgasya iti ? samyak vyākurvāṇāḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, anyatīrthyāḥ parivrājakāḥ evaṃ vyākuryuḥ — vītarāgasya āyuṣmantaḥ, sā niṣṭhā, na sā niṣṭhā sarāgasya iti .

sā punar āyuṣmantaḥ, niṣṭhā sadveṣasya utāho vītadveṣasya iti ? samyak vyākurvāṇāḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, anyatīrthyāḥ parivrājakāḥ evaṃ vyākuryuḥ — vītadveṣasya āyuṣmantaḥ, sā niṣṭhā, na sā niṣṭhā sadveṣasya iti .

sā punar āyuṣmantaḥ, niṣṭhā samohasya utāho vītamohasya iti ? samyak vyākurvāṇāḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, anyatīrthyāḥ parivrājakāḥ evaṃ vyākuryuḥ — vītamohasya āyuṣmantaḥ, sā niṣṭhā, na sā niṣṭhā samohasya iti .

sā punar āyuṣmantaḥ, niṣṭhā satṛṣṇasya utāho vītatṛṣṇasya iti ? samyak vyākurvāṇāḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, anyatīrthyāḥ parivrājakāḥ evaṃ vyākuryuḥ — vītatṛṣṇasya āyuṣmantaḥ, sā niṣṭhā, na sā niṣṭhā satṛṣṇasya iti .

sā punar āyuṣmantaḥ, niṣṭhā sopādānasya utāho anupādānasya iti ? samyak vyākurvāṇāḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, anyatīrthyāḥ parivrājakāḥ evaṃ vyākuryuḥ — anupādānasya āyuṣmantaḥ, sā niṣṭhā, na sā niṣṭhā sopādānasya iti .

sā punar āyuṣmantaḥ, niṣṭhā viduṣaḥ utāho aviduṣaḥ iti ? samyak vyākurvāṇāḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, anyatīrthyāḥ parivrājakāḥ evaṃ vyākuryuḥ — viduṣaḥ, āyuṣmantaḥ, sā niṣṭhā, na sā niṣṭhā aviduṣaḥ iti .

sā punar āyuṣmantaḥ, niṣṭhā anuruddhaprativiruddhasya utāho ananuruddhāprativiruddhasya iti ? samyak vyākurvāṇāḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, anyatīrthyāḥ parivrājakāḥ evaṃ vyākuryuḥ — ananuruddhāprativiruddhasya āyuṣmantaḥ, sā niṣṭhā, na sā niṣṭhā anuruddhaprativiruddhasya iti .

sā punar āyuṣmantaḥ, niṣṭhā prapañcārāmasya prapañcarateḥ utāho niṣprapañcārāmasya niṣprapañcarateḥ iti ? samyak vyākurvāṇāḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, anyatīrthyāḥ parivrājakāḥ evaṃ vyākuryuḥ — niṣprapañcārāmasya āyuṣmantaḥ, sā niṣṭhā niṣprapañcarateḥ, na sā niṣṭhā prapañcārāmasya prapañcarateḥ iti .

dve ime, bhikṣavaḥ, dṛṣṭī — bhavavibhavadṛṣṭī . ye hi kecit, bhikṣavaḥ, śramaṇāḥ vā brāhmaṇāḥ vā bhavadṛṣṭim ālīnāḥ bhavadṛṣṭim upagatāḥ bhavadṛṣṭim adhyavasitāḥ, vibhavadṛṣṭyā te prativiruddhāḥ . ye hi kecit, bhikṣavaḥ, śramaṇāḥ vā brāhmaṇāḥ vā vibhavadṛṣṭim ālīnāḥ vibhavadṛṣṭim upagatāḥ vibhavadṛṣṭim adhyavasitāḥ, bhavadṛṣṭyā te prativiruddhāḥ .

ye hi kecit, bhikṣavaḥ, śramaṇāḥ vā brāhmaṇāḥ vā anayoḥ dvayoḥ dṛṣṭyoḥ samudayaṃ ca astaṃgamaṃ ca āsvādaṃ ca ādīnavaṃ ca niḥsaraṇaṃ ca yathābhūtaṃ na prajānanti, te sarāgāḥ te sadveṣāḥ te samohāḥ te satṛṣṇāḥ te sopādānāḥ te avidvāṃsaḥ te anuruddhaprativiruddhāḥ te prapañcārāmāḥ prapañcaratayaḥ ; te na parimucyante jātyāḥ jarāyāḥ maraṇāt śokebhyaḥ paridevebhyaḥ duḥkhebhyaḥ daurmanasyebhyaḥ upāyāsebhyaḥ ; na parimucyante duḥkhāt iti vadāmi .

ye ca khalu kecit, bhikṣavaḥ, śramaṇāḥ vā brāhmaṇāḥ vā anayoḥ dvayoḥ dṛṣṭyoḥ samudayaṃ ca astaṃgamaṃ ca āsvādaṃ ca ādīnavaṃ ca niḥsaraṇaṃ ca yathābhūtaṃ prajānanti, te vītarāgāḥ te vītadveṣāḥ te vītamohāḥ te vītatṛṣṇāḥ te anupādānāḥ te vidvāṃsaḥ te ananuruddhāprativiruddhāḥ te niṣprapañcārāmāḥ niṣprapañcaratayaḥ ; te parimucyante jātyāḥ jarāyāḥ maraṇāt śokebhyaḥ paridevebhyaḥ duḥkhebhyaḥ daurmanasyebhyaḥ upāyāsebhyaḥ ; parimucyante duḥkhāt iti vadāmi .

catvāri imāni, bhikṣavaḥ, upādānāni . katamāni catvāri ? kāmopādānam, dṛṣṭyupādānam, śīlavratopādānam, ātmavādopādānam .

santi, bhikṣavaḥ, eke śramaṇabrāhmaṇāḥ sarvopādānaparijñāvādinaḥ pratijānānāḥ . te na samyak sarvopādānaparijñāṃ prajñāpayanti — kāmopādānasya parijñāṃ prajñāpayanti, na dṛṣṭyupādānasya parijñāṃ prajñāpayanti, na śīlavratopādānasya parijñāṃ prajñāpayanti, na ātmavādopādānasya parijñāṃ prajñāpayanti . tat kasya hetoḥ ? imāni hi te bhavantaḥ śramaṇabrāhmaṇāḥ trīṇi sthānāni yathābhūtaṃ na prajānanti . tasmāt te bhavantaḥ śramaṇabrāhmaṇāḥ sarvopādānaparijñāvādinaḥ pratijānānāḥ ; te na samyak sarvopādānaparijñāṃ prajñāpayanti — kāmopādānasya parijñāṃ prajñāpayanti, na dṛṣṭyupādānasya parijñāṃ prajñāpayanti, na śīlavratopādānasya parijñāṃ prajñāpayanti, na ātmavādopādānasya parijñāṃ prajñāpayanti .

santi, bhikṣavaḥ, eke śramaṇabrāhmaṇāḥ sarvopādānaparijñāvādinaḥ pratijānānāḥ . te na samyak sarvopādānaparijñāṃ prajñāpayanti — kāmopādānasya parijñāṃ prajñāpayanti, dṛṣṭyupādānasya parijñāṃ prajñāpayanti, na śīlavratopādānasya parijñāṃ prajñāpayanti, na ātmavādopādānasya parijñāṃ prajñāpayanti . tat kasya hetoḥ ? ime hi te bhavantaḥ śramaṇabrāhmaṇāḥ dve sthāne yathābhūtaṃ na prajānanti . tasmāt te bhavantaḥ śramaṇabrāhmaṇāḥ sarvopādānaparijñāvādinaḥ pratijānānāḥ ; te na samyak sarvopādānaparijñāṃ prajñāpayanti — kāmopādānasya parijñāṃ prajñāpayanti, dṛṣṭyupādānasya parijñāṃ prajñāpayanti, na śīlavratopādānasya parijñāṃ prajñāpayanti, na ātmavādopādānasya parijñāṃ prajñāpayanti .

evaṃrūpe khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, dharmavinaye yaḥ śāstari prasādaḥ saḥ na samyaggataḥ ākhyāyate ; yaḥ dharme prasādaḥ saḥ na samyaggataḥ ākhyāyate ; yā śīleṣu paripūrakāritā sā na samyaggatā ākhyāyate ; yā sahadhārmikeṣu priyamanojñatā sā na samyaggatā ākhyāyate . tat kasya hetoḥ ? evam hi etad, bhikṣavaḥ, bhavati yathā tad durākhyāte dharmavinaye duṣpravedite anairyāṇike anupaśamāvahe asamyaksambuddhapravedite .

tathāgataḥ ca khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, arhan samyaksambuddhaḥ sarvopādānaparijñāvādī pratijānānaḥ samyak sarvopādānaparijñāṃ prajñāpayati — kāmopādānasya parijñāṃ prajñāpayati, dṛṣṭyupādānasya parijñāṃ prajñāpayati, śīlavratopādānasya parijñāṃ prajñāpayati, ātmavādopādānasya parijñāṃ prajñāpayati .

evaṃrūpe khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, dharmavinaye yaḥ śāstari prasādaḥ saḥ samyaggataḥ ākhyāyate ; yaḥ dharme prasādaḥ saḥ samyaggataḥ ākhyāyate ; yā śīleṣu paripūrakāritā sā samyaggatā ākhyāyate ; yā sahadhārmikeṣu priyamanojñatā sā samyaggatā ākhyāyate . tat kasya hetoḥ ? evam hi etad, bhikṣavaḥ, bhavati yathā tat svākhyāte dharmavinaye supravedite nairyāṇike upaśamāvahe samyaksambuddhapravedite .

imāni ca, bhikṣavaḥ, catvāri upādānāni . kiṃnidānāni kiṃsamudayāni kiṃjātīyāni kiṃprabhavāni ? imāni catvāri upādānāni tṛṣṇānidānāni tṛṣṇāsamudayāni tṛṣṇājātīyāni tṛṣṇāprabhavāni . tṛṣṇā ca iyam, bhikṣavaḥ, kiṃnidānā kiṃsamudayā kiṃjātīyā kiṃprabhavā ? tṛṣṇā vedanānidānā vedanāsamudayā vedanājātīyā vedanāprabhavā . vedanā ca iyam, bhikṣavaḥ, kiṃnidānā kiṃsamudayā kiṃjātīyā kiṃprabhavā ? vedanā sparśanidānā sparśasamudayā sparśajātīyā sparśaprabhavā . sparśaḥ ca ayam, bhikṣavaḥ, kiṃnidānaḥ kiṃsamudayaḥ kiṃjātīyaḥ kiṃprabhavaḥ ? sparśaḥ ṣaḍāyatananidānaḥ ṣaḍāyatanasamudayaḥ ṣaḍāyatanajātīyaḥ ṣaḍāyatanaprabhavaḥ . ṣaḍāyatanaṃ ca idam, bhikṣavaḥ, kiṃnidānaṃ kiṃsamudayaṃ kiṃjātīyaṃ kiṃprabhavam ? ṣaḍāyatanaṃ nāmarūpanidānaṃ nāmarūpasamudayaṃ nāmarūpajātīyaṃ nāmarūpaprabhavam . nāmarūpaṃ ca idam, bhikṣavaḥ, kiṃnidānaṃ kiṃsamudayaṃ kiṃjātīyaṃ kiṃprabhavam ? nāmarūpaṃ vijñānanidānaṃ vijñānasamudayaṃ vijñānajātīyaṃ vijñānaprabhavam . vijñānaṃ ca idam, bhikṣavaḥ, kiṃnidānaṃ kiṃsamudayaṃ kiṃjātīyaṃ kiṃprabhavam ? vijñānaṃ saṃskāranidānaṃ saṃskārasamudayaṃ saṃskārajātīyaṃ saṃskāraprabhavam . saṃskārāḥ ca ime, bhikṣavaḥ, kiṃnidānāḥ kiṃsamudayāḥ kiṃjātīyāḥ kiṃprabhavāḥ ? saṃskārāḥ avidyānidānāḥ avidyāsamudayāḥ avidyājātīyāḥ avidyāprabhavāḥ .

yataḥ ca khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣoḥ avidyā prahīṇā bhavati vidyā utpannā, saḥ avidyāvirāgāt vidyotpādāt na eva kāmopādānam upādatte, na dṛṣṭyupādānam upādatte, na śīlavratopādānam upādatte, na ātmavādopādānam upādatte . anupādadānaḥ na paritrasyati, aparitrasyan pratyātmam eva parinirvāti .

kṣīṇā jātiḥ, uṣitaṃ brahmacaryam, kṛtaṃ karaṇīyam, na aparam itthatvāya iti prajānāti iti .

idam avocat bhagavān . āttamanasaḥ te bhikṣavaḥ bhagavataḥ bhāṣitam abhyanandiṣuḥ .

kṣudrasiṃhanādasūtraṃ niṣṭhitaṃ prathamam .
