evaṃ mayā śrutam — ekasmin samaye bhagavān gośṛṅgaśālavanadāve viharati sma saṃbahulaiḥ abhijñātaiḥ abhijñātaiḥ sthaviraiḥ śrāvakaiḥ sārdham — āyuṣmatā ca śāriputreṇa āyuṣmatā ca mahāmaudgalyāyanena āyuṣmatā ca mahākāśyapena āyuṣmatā ca anuruddhena āyuṣmatā ca revatena āyuṣmatā ca ānandena, anyaiḥ ca abhijñātaiḥ abhijñātaiḥ sthaviraiḥ śrāvakaiḥ sārdham .

atha khalu āyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyanaḥ sāyāhnasamaye pratisaṃlayanāt utthitaḥ āyuṣmantaṃ mahākāśyapam upasaṃcakrāma ; upasaṃkramya āyuṣmantaṃ mahākāśyapam etad avocat : “āyāma āyuṣman, kāśyapa, āyuṣmantaṃ śāriputram upasaṃkramiṣyāmaḥ dharmaśravaṇāya” iti .

“evam āyuṣman” iti khalu āyuṣmān mahākāśyapaḥ āyuṣmataḥ mahāmaudgalyāyanasya pratyaśrauṣīt . atha khalu āyuṣmān ca mahāmaudgalyāyanaḥ āyuṣmān ca mahākāśyapaḥ āyuṣmān ca anuruddhaḥ āyuṣmantaṃ śāriputram upasaṃcakramuḥ dharmaśravaṇāya .

adrākṣīt khalu āyuṣmān ānandaḥ āyuṣmantaṃ ca mahāmaudgalyāyanam āyuṣmantaṃ ca mahākāśyapam āyuṣmantaṃ ca anuruddhaṃ āyuṣmantaṃ śāriputram upasaṃkrāmataḥ dharmaśravaṇāya . dṛṣṭvā āyuṣmantaṃ revatam upasaṃcakrāma ; upasaṃkramya āyuṣmantaṃ revatam etad avocat : “upasaṃkrāmanti khalu amī, āyuṣman revata, satpuruṣāḥ āyuṣmantaṃ śāriputram dharmaśravaṇāya . āyāma āyuṣman revata, āyuṣmantaṃ śāriputram upasaṃkramiṣyāmaḥ dharmaśravaṇāya” iti . “evam āyuṣman” iti khalu āyuṣmān revataḥ āyuṣmataḥ ānandasya pratyaśrauṣīt . atha khalu āyuṣmān ca revataḥ āyuṣmān ca ānandaḥ āyuṣmantam śāriputram upasaṃcakramatuḥ dharmaśravaṇāya .

adrākṣīt khalu āyuṣmān śāriputraḥ āyuṣmantaṃ ca revatam āyuṣmantaṃ ca ānandaṃ dūrataḥ eva āgacchantau . dṛṣṭvā āyuṣmantaṃ ānandam etad avocat : “etu khalu āyuṣmān ānandaḥ . svāgatam āyuṣmate ānandāya bhagavataḥ upasthātre bhagavataḥ antikāvacarāya . ramaṇīyam, āyuṣman ānanda, gośṛṅgaśālavanam, jyautsnī rātriḥ, sarvapraphullāḥ śālāḥ, divyāḥ, manye, gandhāḥ sampravānti ; kathaṃrūpeṇa, āyuṣman ānanda, bhikṣuṇā gośṛṅgaśālavanaṃ śobheta” iti ?

“iha, āyuṣman śāriputra, bhikṣuḥ bahuśrutaḥ bhavati śrutadharaḥ śrutasaṃnicayaḥ . ye te dharmāḥ ādikalyāṇāḥ madhyekalyāṇāḥ paryavasānakalyāṇāḥ sārthāḥ savyañjanāḥ ; kevalaparipūrṇaṃ pariśuddhaṃ brahmacaryam abhivadanti, tathārūpāḥ asya dharmāḥ bahuśrutāḥ bhavanti, dhṛtāḥ, vacasā paricitāḥ, manasā anupekṣitāḥ, dṛṣṭyā supratividdhāḥ . saḥ catasṛṇāṃ parṣadāṃ dharmaṃ deśayati parimaṇḍalaiḥ padavyañjanaiḥ anuprabandhaiḥ anuśayasamudghātāya . evaṃrūpeṇa khalu, āyuṣman śāriputra, bhikṣuṇā gośṛṅgaśālavanaṃ śobheta” iti .

evam ukte, āyuṣmān śāriputraḥ āyuṣmantaṃ revatam etad avocat : “vyākṛtaṃ khalu, āyuṣman revata, āyuṣmatā ānandena yathāsvakaṃ pratibhānam . tatra idānīṃ vayam āyuṣmantaṃ revataṃ pṛcchāmaḥ : 'ramaṇīyam, āyuṣman revata, gośṛṅgaśālavanam, jyautsnī rātriḥ, sarvapraphullāḥ śālāḥ, divyāḥ, manye, gandhāḥ sampravānti ; kathaṃrūpeṇa, āyuṣman revata, bhikṣuṇā gośṛṅgaśālavanaṃ śobheta'” iti ?

“iha, āyuṣman śāriputra, bhikṣuḥ pratisaṃlayanārāmaḥ bhavati pratisaṃlayānurataḥ, adhyātmaṃ cetaḥśamatham anuyuktaḥ anirākṛtadhyānaḥ, vipaśyanayā samanvitaḥ, bṛṃhayitā śūnyāgārāṇām . evaṃrūpeṇa khalu, āyuṣman śāriputra, bhikṣuṇā gośṛṅgaśālavanaṃ śobheta” iti .

evam ukte, āyuṣmān śāriputraḥ āyuṣmantam anuruddham etad avocat : “vyākṛtaṃ khalu, āyuṣman anuruddha, āyuṣmatā revatena yathāsvakaṃ pratibhānam . tatra idānīṃ vayam āyuṣmantam anuruddhaṃ pṛcchāmaḥ : 'ramaṇīyam, āyuṣman anuruddha, gośṛṅgaśālavanam, jyautsnī rātriḥ, sarvapraphullāḥ śālāḥ, divyāḥ, manye, gandhāḥ sampravānti ; kathaṃrūpeṇa, āyuṣman anuruddha, bhikṣuṇā gośṛṅgaśālavanaṃ śobheta'” iti ?

“iha, āyuṣman śāriputra, bhikṣuḥ divyena cakṣuṣā viśuddhena atikrāntamānuṣakeṇa sahasraṃ lokānāṃ vyavalokayati . tadyathā api, āyuṣman śāriputra, cakṣuṣmān puruṣaḥ upariprāsādavaragataḥ sahasraṃ nemimaṇḍalānāṃ vyavalokayet ; evam eva khalu, āyuṣman śāriputra, bhikṣuḥ divyena cakṣuṣā viśuddhena atikrāntamānuṣakeṇa sahasraṃ lokānāṃ vyavalokayati . evaṃrūpeṇa khalu, āyuṣman śāriputra, bhikṣuṇā gośṛṅgaśālavanaṃ śobheta” iti .

evam ukte, āyuṣmān śāriputraḥ āyuṣmantaṃ mahākāśyapam etad avocat : “vyākṛtaṃ khalu, āyuṣman kāśyapa, āyuṣmatā anuruddhena yathāsvakaṃ pratibhānam . tatra idānīṃ vayam āyuṣmantaṃ mahākāśyapaṃ pṛcchāmaḥ : 'ramaṇīyam, āyuṣman kāśyapa, gośṛṅgaśālavanam, jyautsnī rātriḥ, sarvapraphullāḥ śālāḥ, divyāḥ, manye, gandhāḥ sampravānti ; kathaṃrūpeṇa, āyuṣman kāśyapa, bhikṣuṇā gośṛṅgaśālavanaṃ śobheta'” iti ?

“iha, āyuṣman śāriputra, bhikṣuḥ ātmanā ca āraṇyakaḥ bhavati āraṇyakatvasya ca varṇavādī, ātmanā ca piṇḍapātikaḥ bhavati piṇḍapātikatvasya ca varṇavādī, ātmanā ca pāṃśukūlikaḥ bhavati pāṃśukūlikatvasya ca varṇavādī, ātmanā ca traicīvarikaḥ bhavati traicīvarikatvasya ca varṇavādī, ātmanā ca alpecchaḥ bhavati alpecchatāyāḥ ca varṇavādī, ātmanā ca saṃtuṣṭaḥ bhavati saṃtuṣṭeḥ ca varṇavādī, ātmanā ca praviviktaḥ bhavati pravivekasya ca varṇavādī, ātmanā ca asaṃsṛṣṭaḥ bhavati asaṃsargasya ca varṇavādī, ātmanā ca ārabdhavīryaḥ bhavati vīryārambhasya ca varṇavādī, ātmanā ca śīlasaṃpannaḥ bhavati śīlasaṃpadaḥ ca varṇavādī, ātmanā ca samādhisaṃpannaḥ bhavati samādhisaṃpadaḥ ca varṇavādī, ātmanā ca prajñāsaṃpannaḥ bhavati prajñāsaṃpadaḥ ca varṇavādī, ātmanā ca vimuktisaṃpannaḥ bhavati vimuktisaṃpadaḥ ca varṇavādī, ātmanā ca vimuktijñānadarśanasaṃpannaḥ bhavati vimuktijñānadarśanasaṃpadaḥ ca varṇavādī . evaṃrūpeṇa khalu, āyuṣman śāriputra, bhikṣuṇā gośṛṅgaśālavanaṃ śobheta” iti .

evam ukte, āyuṣmān śāriputraḥ āyuṣmantaṃ mahāmaudgalyāyanam etad avocat : “vyākṛtaṃ khalu, āyuṣman maudgalyāyana, āyuṣmatā mahākāśyapena yathāsvakaṃ pratibhānam . tatra idānīṃ vayam āyuṣmantaṃ mahāmaudgalyāyanaṃ pṛcchāmaḥ : 'ramaṇīyam, āyuṣman maudgalyāyana, gośṛṅgaśālavanam, jyautsnī rātriḥ, sarvapraphullāḥ śālāḥ, divyāḥ, manye, gandhāḥ sampravānti ; kathaṃrūpeṇa, āyuṣman maudgalyāyana, bhikṣuṇā gośṛṅgaśālavanaṃ śobheta'” iti ?

“iha, āyuṣman śāriputra, dvau bhikṣū abhidharmakathāṃ kathayataḥ, tau anyonyaṃ praśnaṃ pṛcchataḥ, anyonyasya praśnaṃ pṛṣṭau visarjayataḥ, na ca saṃsādayataḥ, dharmī ca tayoḥ kathā pravartinī bhavati . evaṃrūpeṇa khalu, āyuṣman śāriputra, bhikṣuṇā gośṛṅgaśālavanaṃ śobheta” iti .

atha khalu āyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyanaḥ āyuṣmantaṃ śāriputram etad avocat : “vyākṛtaṃ khalu, āyuṣman śāriputra, asmābhiḥ sarvaiḥ eva yathāsvakaṃ pratibhānam . tatra idānīṃ vayam āyuṣmantaṃ śāriputraṃ pṛcchāmaḥ : 'ramaṇīyam, āyuṣman śāriputra, gośṛṅgaśālavanam, jyautsnī rātriḥ, sarvapraphullāḥ śālāḥ, divyāḥ, manye, gandhāḥ sampravānti ; kathaṃrūpeṇa, āyuṣman śāriputra, bhikṣuṇā gośṛṅgaśālavanaṃ śobheta'” iti ?

“iha, āyuṣman maudgalyāyana, bhikṣuḥ cittaṃ vaśaṃ vartayati, na ca bhikṣuḥ cittasya vaśena vartate . saḥ yayā vihārasamāpattyā ākāṅkṣati pūrvāhṇasamaye vihartum, tayā vihārasamāpattyā pūrvāhṇasamaye viharati ; yayā vihārasamāpattyā ākāṅkṣati mādhyāhnikasamaye vihartum, tayā vihārasamāpattyā mādhyāhnikasamaye viharati ; yayā vihārasamāpattyā ākāṅkṣati sāyāhnasamaye vihartum, tayā vihārasamāpattyā sāyāhnasamaye viharati . tadyathā api, āyuṣman maudgalyāyana, rājñaḥ vā rājamahāmātrasya vā nānāraktānāṃ dūṣyāṇāṃ dūṣyakaraṇḍakaḥ pūrṇaḥ syāt . saḥ yad yad eva dūṣyayugam ākāṅkṣet pūrvāhṇasamaye prāvarituṃ, tat tad eva dūṣyayugaṃ pūrvāhṇasamaye prāvṛṇuyāt ; yad yad eva dūṣyayugam ākāṅkṣet mādhyāhnikasamaye prāvarituṃ, tat tad eva dūṣyayugaṃ mādhyāhnikasamaye prāvṛṇuyāt ; yad yad eva dūṣyayugam ākāṅkṣet sāyāhnasamaye prāvarituṃ, tat tad eva dūṣyayugaṃ sāyāhnasamaye prāvṛṇuyāt .

evam eva khalu, āyuṣman maudgalyāyana, bhikṣuḥ cittaṃ vaśaṃ vartayati, na ca bhikṣuḥ cittasya vaśena vartate . saḥ yayā vihārasamāpattyā ākāṅkṣati pūrvāhṇasamaye vihartum, tayā vihārasamāpattyā pūrvāhṇasamaye viharati ; yayā vihārasamāpattyā ākāṅkṣati mādhyāhnikasamaye vihartum, tayā vihārasamāpattyā mādhyāhnikasamaye viharati ; yayā vihārasamāpattyā ākāṅkṣati sāyāhnasamaye vihartum, tayā vihārasamāpattyā sāyāhnasamaye viharati . evaṃrūpeṇa khalu, āyuṣman maudgalyāyana, bhikṣuṇā gośṛṅgaśālavanaṃ śobheta” iti .

atha khalu āyuṣmān śāriputraḥ tān āyuṣmataḥ etad avocat : “vyākṛtaṃ khalu, āyuṣmantaḥ, asmābhiḥ sarvaiḥ eva yathāsvakaṃ pratibhānam . āyāma āyuṣmantaḥ, bhagavantam upasaṃkramiṣyāmaḥ ; upasaṃkramya etam arthaṃ bhagavate ārocayiṣyāmaḥ . yathā naḥ bhagavān vyākariṣyati tathā tad dhārayiṣyāmaḥ” iti .

“evam āyuṣman” iti khalu te āyuṣmantaḥ āyuṣmataḥ śāriputrasya pratyaśrauṣuḥ . atha khalu te āyuṣmantaḥ bhagavantam upasaṃcakramuḥ ; upasaṃkramya bhagavantam abhivādya ekānte nyaṣīdan . ekānte niṣaṇṇaḥ khalu āyuṣmān śāriputraḥ bhagavantam etad avocat : “iha, bhadanta, āyuṣmān ca revataḥ āyuṣmān ca ānandaḥ mām upasaṃcakramatuḥ dharmaśravaṇāya . adrākṣaṃ khalu aham, bhadanta, āyuṣmantaṃ ca revatam āyuṣmantaṃ ca ānandaṃ dūrataḥ eva āgacchantau . dṛṣṭvā āyuṣmantaṃ ānandam etad avocam : 'etu khalu āyuṣmān ānandaḥ . svāgatam āyuṣmate ānandāya bhagavataḥ upasthātre bhagavataḥ antikāvacarāya . ramaṇīyam, āyuṣman ānanda, gośṛṅgaśālavanam, jyautsnī rātriḥ, sarvapraphullāḥ śālāḥ, divyāḥ, manye, gandhāḥ sampravānti ; kathaṃrūpeṇa, āyuṣman ānanda, bhikṣuṇā gośṛṅgaśālavanaṃ śobheta' iti ? evam ukte, bhadanta, āyuṣmān ānandaḥ mām etad avocat : 'iha, āyuṣman śāriputra, bhikṣuḥ bahuśrutaḥ bhavati śrutadharaḥ … anuśayasamudghātāya . evaṃrūpeṇa khalu, āyuṣman śāriputra, bhikṣuṇā gośṛṅgaśālavanaṃ śobheta'” iti .

“sādhu sādhu, śāriputra . yathā tad revataḥ eva samyag vyākurvāṇaḥ vyākuryāt . revataḥ hi, śāriputra, pratisaṃlayanārāmaḥ pratisaṃlayānurataḥ, adhyātmaṃ cetaḥśamatham anuyuktaḥ anirākṛtadhyānaḥ, vipaśyanayā samanvitaḥ bṛṃhayitā śūnyāgārāṇām” iti .

“evam ukte, aham, bhadanta, āyuṣmantam anuruddham etad avocam : 'vyākṛtaṃ khalu, āyuṣman anuruddha, āyuṣmatā revatena … kathaṃrūpeṇa, āyuṣman anuruddha, bhikṣuṇā gośṛṅgaśālavanaṃ śobheta' iti . evam ukte, bhadanta, āyuṣmān anuruddhaḥ mām etad avocat : 'iha, āyuṣman śāriputra, bhikṣuḥ divyena cakṣuṣā viśuddhena atikrāntamānuṣakeṇa sahasraṃ lokānāṃ vyavalokayati . tadyathā api, āyuṣman śāriputra, cakṣuṣmān puruṣaḥ … evaṃrūpeṇa khalu, āyuṣman śāriputra, bhikṣuṇā gośṛṅgaśālavanaṃ śobheta'” iti .

evam ukte, āyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyanaḥ bhagavantam etad avocat : “atha khalu aham, bhadanta, āyuṣmantaṃ śāriputram etad avocam : 'vyākṛtaṃ khalu, āyuṣman śāriputra, asmābhiḥ sarvaiḥ eva yathāsvakaṃ pratibhānam . tatra idānīṃ vayam āyuṣmantaṃ śāriputraṃ pṛcchāmaḥ — ramaṇīyam, āyuṣman śāriputra, gośṛṅgaśālavanam, jyautsnī rātriḥ, sarvapraphullāḥ śālāḥ, divyāḥ, manye, gandhāḥ sampravānti . kathaṃrūpeṇa, āyuṣman śāriputra, bhikṣuṇā gośṛṅgaśālavanaṃ śobheta' iti ? evam ukte, bhadanta, āyuṣmān śāriputraḥ mām etad avocat : 'iha, āyuṣman maudgalyāyana, bhikṣuḥ cittaṃ vaśaṃ vartayati na ca bhikṣuḥ cittasya vaśena vartate . saḥ yayā vihārasamāpattyā ākāṅkṣati pūrvāhṇasamaye vihartum, tayā vihārasamāpattyā pūrvāhṇasamaye viharati ; yayā vihārasamāpattyā ākāṅkṣati mādhyāhnikasamaye vihartum, tayā vihārasamāpattyā mādhyāhnikasamaye viharati ; yayā vihārasamāpattyā ākāṅkṣati sāyāhnasamaye vihartum, tayā vihārasamāpattyā sāyāhnasamaye viharati . tadyathā api, āyuṣman maudgalyāyana, rājñaḥ vā rājamahāmātrasya vā nānāraktānāṃ dūṣyāṇāṃ dūṣyakaraṇḍakaḥ pūrṇaḥ syāt . saḥ yad yad eva dūṣyayugam ākāṅkṣet pūrvāhṇasamaye prāvarituṃ, tat tad eva dūṣyayugaṃ pūrvāhṇasamaye prāvṛṇuyāt ; yad yad eva dūṣyayugam ākāṅkṣet mādhyāhnikasamaye prāvarituṃ, tat tad eva dūṣyayugaṃ mādhyāhnikasamaye prāvṛṇuyāt ; yad yad eva dūṣyayugam ākāṅkṣet sāyāhnasamaye prāvarituṃ, tat tad eva dūṣyayugaṃ sāyāhnasamaye prāvṛṇuyāt . evam eva khalu, āyuṣman maudgalyāyana, bhikṣuḥ cittaṃ vaśaṃ vartayati, na ca bhikṣuḥ cittasya vaśena vartate . saḥ yayā vihārasamāpattyā ākāṅkṣati pūrvāhṇasamaye vihartum, tayā vihārasamāpattyā pūrvāhṇasamaye viharati ; yayā vihārasamāpattyā ākāṅkṣati mādhyāhnikasamaye vihartum, tayā vihārasamāpattyā mādhyāhnikasamaye viharati ; yayā vihārasamāpattyā ākāṅkṣati sāyāhnasamaye vihartum, tayā vihārasamāpattyā sāyāhnasamaye viharati . evaṃrūpeṇa khalu, āyuṣman maudgalyāyana, bhikṣuṇā gośṛṅgaśālavanaṃ śobheta'” iti .

“sādhu sādhu, maudgalyāyana . yathā tad śāriputraḥ eva samyag vyākurvāṇaḥ vyākuryāt . śāriputraḥ hi, maudgalyāyana, cittaṃ vaśaṃ vartayati na ca śāriputraḥ cittasya vaśena vartate . saḥ yayā vihārasamāpattyā ākāṅkṣati pūrvāhṇasamaye vihartum, tayā vihārasamāpattyā pūrvāhṇasamaye viharati ; yayā vihārasamāpattyā ākāṅkṣati mādhyāhnikasamaye vihartum, tayā vihārasamāpattyā mādhyāhnikasamaye viharati ; yayā vihārasamāpattyā ākāṅkṣati sāyāhnasamaye vihartum, tayā vihārasamāpattyā sāyāhnasamaye viharati” iti .

evam ukte, āyuṣmān śāriputraḥ bhagavantam etad avocat : “kasya nu khalu, bhadanta, subhāṣitam” iti ?

“sarveṣāṃ vaḥ, śāriputra, subhāṣitaṃ paryāyeṇa . api ca mamāpi śṛṇuta yathārūpeṇa bhikṣuṇā gośṛṅgaśālavanaṃ śobheta . iha, śāriputra, bhikṣuḥ paścādbhaktam piṇḍapātapratikrāntaḥ niṣīdati paryaṅkam ābhujya ṛjuṃ kāyaṃ praṇidhāya parimukhaṃ smṛtim upasthāpya : 'na tāvad aham imaṃ paryaṅkaṃ bhetsyāmi yāvat me anupādāya āsravebhyaḥ cittaṃ vimokṣyate' iti . evaṃrūpeṇa khalu, śāriputra, bhikṣuṇā gośṛṅgaśālavanaṃ śobheta” iti .

idam avocat bhagavān . āttamanasaḥ te āyuṣmantaḥ bhagavataḥ bhāṣitam abhyanandiṣuḥ .

mahāgośṛṅgasūtraṃ niṣṭhitaṃ dvitīyam .
