madhyamanikāyaḥ 4 - bhayabhairavasūtram

evaṃ mayā śrutam — ekasmin samaye bhagavān śrāvastyāṃ viharati sma jetavane anāthapiṇḍadasya ārāme .

atha khalu jānuśroṇiḥ brāhmaṇaḥ bhagavantam upasaṃcakrāma ; upasaṃkramya bhagavatā sārdhaṃ samamodata . saṃmodanīyāṃ kathāṃ smāraṇīyāṃ vyatisārya ekānte nyaṣīdat . ekānte niṣaṇṇaḥ khalu jānuśroṇiḥ brāhmaṇaḥ bhagavantam etad avocat —

ye ime, bhoḥ gautama, kulaputrāḥ bhavantaṃ gautamam uddiśya śraddhayā agārāt anagārikāṃ pravrajitāḥ, bhavān teṣāṃ gautamaḥ purogamaḥ, bhavān teṣāṃ gautamaḥ bahūpakārakaḥ, bhavān teṣāṃ gautamaḥ samādāpayitā ; bhavataḥ ca punaḥ gautamasya sā janatā dṛṣṭānugatim āpadyate iti .

evam etat, brāhmaṇa, evam etat, brāhmaṇa . ye te, brāhmaṇa, kulaputrāḥ mām uddiśya śraddhayā agārāt anagārikāṃ pravrajitāḥ, ahaṃ teṣāṃ pūrvaṃgamaḥ, ahaṃ teṣāṃ bahūpakārakaḥ, ahaṃ teṣāṃ samādāpayitā ; mama ca punaḥ sā janatā dṛṣṭānugatim āpadyate iti .

durabhisambhavāni hi khalu, bhoḥ gautama, araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni, duṣkaraḥ pravivekaḥ, durabhiramaṃ ekākībhāve, haranti manye manaḥ vanāni samādhim alabhamānasya bhikṣoḥ iti .

mamāpi khalu, brāhmaṇa, pūrvam eva saṃbodheḥ anabhisambuddhasya bodhiśaktasya eva sataḥ etad abhūt — durabhisambhavāni hi khalu araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni, duṣkaraḥ pravivekaḥ, durabhiramaṃ ekākībhāve, haranti manye manaḥ vanāni samādhim alabhamānasya bhikṣoḥ iti .

tasya mama, brāhmaṇa, etad abhūt — ye khalu kecit śramaṇāḥ vā brāhmaṇāḥ vā apariśuddhakāyakarmāṇaḥ araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratisevante, apariśuddhakāyakarmasaṃdoṣahetoḥ vai te bhavantaḥ śramaṇabrāhmaṇāḥ akuśalaṃ bhayabhairavam āhvayanti . na khalu punar aham apariśuddhakāyakarmāṇaḥ araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiseve ; pariśuddhakāyakarmāṇaḥ aham asmi . ye hi vai āryāḥ pariśuddhakāyakarmāṇaḥ araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratisevante teṣām aham anyatamaḥ iti . etad aham, brāhmaṇa, pariśuddhakāyakarmatām ātmani sampaśyan bhūyaḥ prāgalbhyam āpatsi araṇye vihārāya .

tasya mama, brāhmaṇa, etad abhūt — ye khalu kecit śramaṇāḥ vā brāhmaṇāḥ vā abhidhyālavaḥ kāmeṣu tīvrasaṃrāgāḥ araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratisevante, abhidhyālukāmeṣutīvrasaṃrāgasaṃdoṣahetoḥ vai te bhavantaḥ śramaṇabrāhmaṇāḥ akuśalaṃ bhayabhairavam āhvayanti . na khalu punar aham abhidhyāluḥ kāmeṣu tīvrasaṃrāgaḥ araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiseve ; anabhidhyāluḥ aham asmi . ye hi vai āryāḥ anabhidhyālavaḥ araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratisevante, teṣām aham anyatamaḥ iti . etad aham, brāhmaṇa, anabhidhyālutām ātmani sampaśyan bhūyaḥ prāgalbhyam āpatsi araṇye vihārāya .

tasya mama, brāhmaṇa, etad abhūt — ye khalu kecit śramaṇāḥ vā brāhmaṇāḥ vā vyāpannacittāḥ praduṣṭamanassaṃkalpāḥ araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratisevante, vyāpannacittapraduṣṭamanassaṃkalpasaṃdoṣahetoḥ vai te bhavantaḥ śramaṇabrāhmaṇāḥ akuśalaṃ bhayabhairavam āhvayanti . na khalu punar ahaṃ vyāpannacittaḥ praduṣṭamanassaṃkalpaḥ araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiseve ; maitracittaḥ aham asmi . ye hi vai āryāḥ maitracittāḥ araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratisevante teṣām aham anyatamaḥ iti . etad aham, brāhmaṇa, maitracittatām ātmani sampaśyan bhūyaḥ prāgalbhyam āpatsi araṇye vihārāya .

tasya mama, brāhmaṇa, etad abhūt — ye khalu kecit śramaṇāḥ vā brāhmaṇāḥ vā styānamiddhaparyavasthitāḥ araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratisevante, styānamiddhaparyavasthānasaṃdoṣahetoḥ vai te bhavantaḥ śramaṇabrāhmaṇāḥ akuśalaṃ bhayabhairavam āhvayanti . na khalu punar ahaṃ styānamiddhaparyavasthitāḥ araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiseve ; vigatastyānamiddhaḥ aham asmi . ye hi vai āryāḥ vigatastyānamiddhāḥ araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratisevante teṣām aham anyatamaḥ iti . etad aham, brāhmaṇa, vigatastyānamiddhatām ātmani sampaśyan bhūyaḥ prāgalbhyam āpatsi araṇye vihārāya .

tasya mama, brāhmaṇa, etad abhūt — ye khalu kecit śramaṇāḥ vā brāhmaṇāḥ vā uddhatāḥ anupaśāntacittāḥ araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratisevante, uddhatānupaśāntacittasaṃdoṣahetoḥ vai te bhavantaḥ śramaṇabrāhmaṇāḥ akuśalaṃ bhayabhairavam āhvayanti . na khalu punar aham uddhataḥ anupaśāntacittaḥ araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiseve ; vyupaśāntacittaḥ aham asmi . ye hi vai āryāḥ vyupaśāntacittāḥ araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratisevante, teṣām aham anyatamaḥ iti . etad aham, brāhmaṇa, vyupaśāntacittatām ātmani sampaśyan bhūyaḥ prāgalbhyam āpatsi araṇye vihārāya .

tasya mama, brāhmaṇa, etad abhūt — ye khalu kecit śramaṇāḥ vā brāhmaṇāḥ vā kāṅkṣiṇaḥ saṃśayālavaḥ araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratisevante, kāṅkṣivicikitsisaṃdoṣahetoḥ vai te bhavantaḥ śramaṇabrāhmaṇāḥ akuśalaṃ bhayabhairavam āhvayanti . na khalu punar ahaṃ kāṅkṣī saṃśayāluḥ araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiseve ; tīrṇavicikitsaḥ aham asmi . ye hi vai āryāḥ tīrṇavicikitsāḥ araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratisevante teṣām aham anyatamaḥ iti . etad aham, brāhmaṇa, tīrṇavicikitsatām ātmani sampaśyan bhūyaḥ prāgalbhyam āpatsi araṇye vihārāya .

tasya mama, brāhmaṇa, etad abhūt — ye khalu kecit śramaṇāḥ vā brāhmaṇāḥ vā ātmotkarṣiṇaḥ paraviḍambinaḥ araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratisevante, ātmotkarṣaṇaparaviḍambanasaṃdoṣahetoḥ vai te bhavantaḥ śramaṇabrāhmaṇāḥ akuśalaṃ bhayabhairavam āhvayanti . na khalu punar aham ātmotkarṣī paraviḍambī araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiseve ; anātmotkarṣī aparaviḍambī aham asmi . ye hi vai āryāḥ anātmotkarṣiṇaḥ aparaviḍambinaḥ araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratisevante teṣām aham anyatamaḥ iti . etad aham, brāhmaṇa, anātmotkarṣakatām aparaviḍambakatām ātmani sampaśyan bhūyaḥ prāgalbhyam āpatsi araṇye vihārāya .

tasya mama, brāhmaṇa, etad abhūt — ye khalu kecit śramaṇāḥ vā brāhmaṇāḥ vā trastāḥ bhīrusvabhāvāḥ araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratisevante, trastabhīrusvabhāvasaṃdoṣahetoḥ vai te bhavantaḥ śramaṇabrāhmaṇāḥ akuśalaṃ bhayabhairavam āhvayanti . na khalu punar ahaṃ trastaḥ bhīrusvabhāvāḥ araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiseve ; vigatalomaharṣaḥ aham asmi . ye hi vai āryāḥ vigatalomaharṣāḥ araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratisevante teṣām aham anyatamaḥ iti . etad aham, brāhmaṇa, vigatalomaharṣatām ātmani sampaśyan bhūyaḥ prāgalbhyam āpatsi araṇye vihārāya .

tasya mama, brāhmaṇa, etad abhūt — ye khalu kecit śramaṇāḥ vā brāhmaṇāḥ vā lābhasatkāraślokaṃ nikāmayamānāḥ araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratisevante, lābhasatkāraślokanikāmanasaṃdoṣahetoḥ vai te bhavantaḥ śramaṇabrāhmaṇāḥ akuśalaṃ bhayabhairavam āhvayanti . na khalu punar ahaṃ lābhasatkāraślokaṃ nikāmayamānaḥ araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiseve ; alpecchaḥ aham asmi . ye hi vai āryāḥ alpecchāḥ araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratisevante teṣām aham anyatamaḥ iti . etad aham, brāhmaṇa, alpecchatām ātmani sampaśyan bhūyaḥ prāgalbhyam āpatsi araṇye vihārāya .

tasya mama, brāhmaṇa, etad abhūt — ye khalu kecit śramaṇāḥ vā brāhmaṇāḥ vā kusīdāḥ hīnavīryāḥ araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratisevante, kusīdahīnavīryasaṃdoṣahetoḥ vai te bhavantaḥ śramaṇabrāhmaṇāḥ akuśalaṃ bhayabhairavam āhvayanti . na khalu punar ahaṃ kusīdaḥ hīnavīryaḥ araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiseve ; ārabdhavīryaḥ aham asmi . ye hi vai āryāḥ ārabdhavīryāḥ araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratisevante teṣām aham anyatamaḥ iti . etad aham, brāhmaṇa, ārabdhavīryatām ātmani sampaśyan bhūyaḥ prāgalbhyam āpatsi araṇye vihārāya .

tasya mama, brāhmaṇa, etad abhūt — ye khalu kecit śramaṇāḥ vā brāhmaṇāḥ vā muṣitasmṛtayaḥ avivekinaḥ araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratisevante, muṣitasmṛtyasaṃprajānatsaṃdoṣahetoḥ vai te bhavantaḥ śramaṇabrāhmaṇāḥ akuśalaṃ bhayabhairavam āhvayanti . na khalu punar ahaṃ muṣitasmṛtiḥ avivekinaḥ araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiseve ; upasthitasmṛtiḥ aham asmi . ye hi vai āryāḥ upasthitasmṛtayaḥ araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratisevante teṣām aham anyatamaḥ iti . etad aham, brāhmaṇa, upasthitasmṛtitām ātmani sampaśyan bhūyaḥ prāgalbhyam āpatsi araṇye vihārāya .

tasya mama, brāhmaṇa, etad abhūt — ye khalu kecit śramaṇāḥ vā brāhmaṇāḥ vā asamāhitāḥ vibhrāntacittāḥ araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratisevante, asamāhitavibhrāntacittasaṃdoṣahetoḥ vai te bhavantaḥ śramaṇabrāhmaṇāḥ akuśalaṃ bhayabhairavam āhvayanti . na khalu punar aham asamāhitaḥ vibhrāntacittaḥ araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiseve ; samādhisamanvitaḥ aham asmi . ye hi vai āryāḥ samādhisamanvitāḥ araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratisevante teṣām aham anyatamaḥ iti . etad aham, brāhmaṇa, samādhisaṃpadaṃ ātmani sampaśyan bhūyaḥ prāgalbhyam āpatsi araṇye vihārāya .

tasya mama, brāhmaṇa, etad abhūt — ye khalu kecit śramaṇāḥ vā brāhmaṇāḥ vā duṣprajñāḥ eḍamūkāḥ araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratisevante, duṣprajñaiḍamūkasaṃdoṣahetoḥ vai te bhavantaḥ śramaṇabrāhmaṇāḥ akuśalaṃ bhayabhairavam āhvayanti . na khalu punar ahaṃ duṣprajñaḥ eḍamūkaḥ araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiseve ; prajñāsamanvitaḥ aham asmi . ye hi vai āryāḥ prajñāsamanvitāḥ araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratisevante teṣām aham anyatamaḥ iti . etad aham, brāhmaṇa, prajñāsaṃpadaṃ ātmani sampaśyan bhūyaḥ prāgalbhyam āpatsi araṇye vihārāya .

ṣoḍaśaparyāyaṃ niṣṭhitam .

tasya mama, brāhmaṇa, etad abhūt — yat nūnam ahaṃ yāḥ tāḥ rātrayaḥ abhijñātāḥ abhilakṣitāḥ — caturdaśī pañcadaśī aṣṭamī ca pakṣasya — tathārūpāsu rātriṣu yāni tāni ārāmacaityāni vanacaityāni vṛkṣacaityāni bhīṣaṇāni lomaharṣaṇāni tathārūpeṣu śayanāsaneṣu vihareyam api eva nāma ahaṃ bhayabhairavaṃ paśyeyam iti . saḥ khalu aham, brāhmaṇa, apareṇa samayena yāḥ tāḥ rātrayaḥ abhijñātāḥ abhilakṣitāḥ — caturdaśī pañcadaśī aṣṭamī ca pakṣasya — tathārūpāsu rātriṣu yāni tāni ārāmacaityāni vanacaityāni vṛkṣacaityāni bhīṣaṇāni lomaharṣaṇāni tathārūpeṣu śayanāsaneṣu viharāmi . tatra ca me, brāhmaṇa, viharataḥ mṛgaḥ vā āgacchati, mayūraḥ vā kāṣṭhaṃ pātayati, vātaḥ vā parṇasaṃkaram īrayati ; tasya mama, brāhmaṇa, etad abhūt — etad nūnaṃ tad bhayabhairavam āgacchati iti . tasya mama, brāhmaṇa, etad abhūt — kiṃ nu khalu aham kevalaṃ bhayapratikāṅkṣī viharāmi ? yat nūnam ahaṃ yathābhūtaṃ yathābhūtasya me tad bhayabhairavam āgacchati, tathābhūtaṃ tathābhūtaḥ eva tad bhayabhairavaṃ prativinayeyam iti . tasya mama, brāhmaṇa, caṅkramamāṇasya tad bhayabhairavam āgacchati . saḥ khalu aham, brāhmaṇa, na eva tāvat tiṣṭhāmi na niṣīdāmi na nipadyāmi, yāvat caṅkramamāṇaḥ eva tad bhayabhairavaṃ prativinayāmi . tasya mama, brāhmaṇa, sthitasya tad bhayabhairavam āgacchati . saḥ khalu aham, brāhmaṇa, na eva tāvat caṅkramāmi na niṣīdāmi na nipadyāmi, yāvat sthitaḥ eva tad bhayabhairavaṃ prativinayāmi . tasya mama, brāhmaṇa, niṣaṇṇasya tad bhayabhairavam āgacchati . saḥ khalu aham, brāhmaṇa, na eva tāvat nipadyāmi na tiṣṭhāmi na caṅkramāmi, yāvat niṣaṇṇaḥ eva tad bhayabhairavaṃ prativinayāmi . tasya mama, brāhmaṇa, nipannasya tad bhayabhairavam āgacchati . saḥ khalu aham, brāhmaṇa, na eva tāvat niṣīdāmi na tiṣṭhāmi na caṅkramāmi, yāvat nipannaḥ eva tad bhayabhairavaṃ prativinayāmi .

santi khalu punaḥ, brāhmaṇa, eke śramaṇabrāhmaṇāḥ; rātrim eva satīṃ ahaḥ iti saṃjānate, ahaḥ eva sat rātrir iti saṃjānate. idam ahaṃ teṣāṃ śramaṇabrāhmaṇānāṃ saṃmohavihāram iti vadāmi. ahaṃ khalu punaḥ, brāhmaṇa, rātrim eva satīṃ rātrir iti saṃjānāmi, ahaḥ eva sat ahaḥ iti saṃjānāmi . yat khalu tad, brāhmaṇa, samyag vadamānaḥ vadet — asaṃmohadharmā sattvaḥ loke utpannaḥ bahujanahitāya bahujanasukhāya lokānukampāyai arthāya hitāya sukhāya devamanuṣyāṇām iti, mām eva tat samyag vadamānaḥ vadet — asaṃmohadharmā sattvaḥ loke utpannaḥ bahujanahitāya bahujanasukhāya lokānukampāyai arthāya hitāya sukhāya devamanuṣyāṇām iti .

ārabdhaṃ khalu punar me, brāhmaṇa, vīryam abhūt asamlīnam, upasthitā smṛtiḥ asaṃmūḍhā, prasrabdhaḥ kāyaḥ asaṃrabdhaḥ, samāhitaṃ cittam ekāgram . saḥ khalu aham, brāhmaṇa, vivicya eva kāmebhyaḥ vivicya akuśalebhyaḥ dharmebhyaḥ savitarkaṃ savicāraṃ vivekajaṃ prītisukhaṃ prathamaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya vyahārṣam . vitarkavicārayoḥ vyupaśamāt adhyātmaṃ saṃprasādanaṃ cetasaḥ ekāgrībhāvam avitarkam avicāraṃ samādhijaṃ prītisukhaṃ dvitīyaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya vyahārṣam . prītyāḥ ca virāgāt upekṣakaḥ ca vyahārṣam, smṛtimān ca saṃprajānan sukhaṃ ca kāyena pratisamavedayam ; yat tad āryāḥ ācakṣate — upekṣakaḥ smṛtimān sukhavihārī iti tṛtīyaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya vyahārṣam . sukhaduḥkhayoḥ prahāṇāt pūrvam eva saumanasyadaurmanasyayoḥ astaṃgamāt aduḥkhamasukham upekṣāsmṛtipāriśuddhiṃ caturthaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya vyahārṣam .

saḥ aham evaṃ samāhite citte pariśuddhe paryavadāte anaṅgaṇe vigatopakleśe mṛdubhūte karmaṇye sthite aniṅgyaprāpte pūrvavāsānusmṛtijñānāya cittam abhinyanāmayam . saḥ aham anekavihitaṃ pūrvanivāsam anusmarāmi, tadyathā — ekām api jātiṃ dve api jātī tisraḥ api jātīḥ catasraḥ api jātīḥ pañca api jātīḥ daśa api jātīḥ viṃśatim api jātīḥ triṃśatam api jātīḥ catvāriṃśatam api jātīḥ pañcāśatam api jātīḥ jātiśatam api jātisahasram api jātiśatasahasram api anekeṣu api saṃvartakalpeṣu anekeṣu api vivartakalpeṣu anekeṣu api saṃvartavivartakalpeṣu — amutra āsam evaṃnāmā evaṃgotraḥ evaṃvarṇaḥ evamāhāraḥ evaṃsukhaduḥkhapratisaṃvedī evamāyuparyantaḥ, saḥ aham tataḥ cyutaḥ amutra udapatsi ; tatra api āsam evaṃnāmā evaṃgotraḥ evaṃvarṇaḥ evamāhāraḥ evaṃsukhaduḥkhapratisaṃvedī evamāyuparyantaḥ, saḥ aham tataḥ cyutaḥ iha upapannaḥ iti . iti sākāraṃ soddeśam anekavihitaṃ pūrvanivāsam anusmarāmi .

iyam khalu me, brāhmaṇa, rātryāḥ prathame yāme prathamā vidyā adhigatā, avidyā vihatā vidyā utpannā, tamaḥ vihataḥ ālokaḥ utpannaḥ, yathā tad apramattasya ātāpinaḥ prahitātmanaḥ viharataḥ .

saḥ aham evaṃ samāhite citte pariśuddhe paryavadāte anaṅgaṇe vigatopakleśe mṛdubhūte karmaṇye sthite aniṅgyaprāpte sattvānāṃ cyutyupapattijñānāya cittam abhinyanāmayam . saḥ aham divyena cakṣuṣā viśuddhena atikrāntamānuṣakeṇa sattvān paśyāmi cyavamānān upapadyamānān hīnān praṇītān suvarṇān durvarṇān sugatān durgatān yathākarmopagān sattvān prajānāmi — ime bata bhavantaḥ sattvāḥ kāyaduścaritena samanvitāḥ vāgduścaritena samanvitāḥ manoduścaritena samanvitāḥ āryāṇām upavādakāḥ mithyādṛṣṭikāḥ mithyādṛṣṭikarmasamādānāḥ ; te kāyasya bhedāt paraṃ maraṇāt apāyaṃ durgatiṃ vinipātaṃ narakam upapannāḥ . ime vā punaḥ bhavantaḥ sattvāḥ kāyasucaritena samanvitāḥ vāksucaritena samanvitāḥ manaḥsucaritena samanvitāḥ āryāṇām anupavādakāḥ samyagdṛṣṭikāḥ samyagdṛṣṭikarmasamādānāḥ ; te kāyasya bhedāt paraṃ maraṇāt sugatiṃ svargaṃ lokam upapannāḥ iti . iti divyena cakṣuṣā viśuddhena atikrāntamānuṣakeṇa sattvān paśyāmi cyavamānān upapadyamānān hīnān praṇītān suvarṇān durvarṇān sugatān durgatān yathākarmopagān sattvān prajānāmi .

iyam khalu me, brāhmaṇa, rātryāḥ madhyame yāme dvitīyā vidyā adhigatā, avidyā vihatā vidyā utpannā, tamaḥ vihataḥ ālokaḥ utpannaḥ, yathā tad apramattasya ātāpinaḥ prahitātmanaḥ viharataḥ .

tasya me evaṃ jānataḥ evaṃ paśyataḥ kāmāsravāt api cittaṃ vyamoci, bhavāsravāt api cittaṃ vyamoci, avidyāsravāt api cittaṃ vyamoci. vimukte vimuktam iti jñānam abhūt .

kṣīṇā jātiḥ, uṣitaṃ brahmacaryam, kṛtaṃ karaṇīyam, na aparam ihabhavāya iti abhyajñāsiṣam .

iyam khalu me, brāhmaṇa, rātryāḥ paścime yāme tṛtīyā vidyā adhigatā, avidyā vihatā vidyā utpannā, tamaḥ vihataḥ ālokaḥ utpannaḥ, yathā tad apramattasya ātāpinaḥ prahitātmanaḥ viharataḥ .

syāt khalu punas te, brāhmaṇa, evam — adya api nūnaṃ śramaṇaḥ gautamaḥ avītarāgaḥ avītadveṣaḥ avītamohaḥ, tasmāt araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratisevate iti . na khalu punar etad, brāhmaṇa, evaṃ draṣṭavyam . dvau khalu aham, brāhmaṇa, arthau sampaśyan araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiseve — ātmanaḥ ca dṛṣṭadharmasukhavihāraṃ sampaśyan, paścimāṃ ca janatām anukampamānaḥ iti .

anukampitaprāyā bata iyam bhavatā gautamena paścimā janatā, yathā tad arhatā samyaksambuddhena . atikrāntaḥ ahaṃ, bhoḥ gautama, atikrāntaḥ . yathā hi, bhoḥ gautama, nyubjitaṃ vā udubjet, pracchannaṃ vā vivṛṇuyāt, mūḍhāya vā mārgam ācakṣīta, andhakāre vā tailapradyotaṃ dhārayet — cakṣuṣmantaḥ rūpāṇi drakṣyanti iti ; evam eva bhavatā gautamena anekaparyāyena dharmaḥ prakāśitaḥ . eṣaḥ aham bhavantaṃ gautamaṃ śaraṇaṃ gacchāmi dharmaṃ ca bhikṣusaṃghaṃ ca . upāsakaṃ māṃ bhavān gautamaḥ dhārayatu adyaprabhṛti yāvajjīvaṃ śaraṇaṃ gatam iti .
