evam mayā śrutam—ekasmin samaye bhagavān śrāvastyāṃ vyahārṣīj jetavane 'nāthapiṇḍadasyārāme.
atha khalu jānaśrutir brāhmaṇo yena bhagavān tenopasamākramīt; upasamākramya bhagavatā sārdhaṃ samamodiṣṭa. sammodanīyāṃ kathāṃ smāraṇīyāṃ vyatisārayitvaikāntaṃ nyasādat. ekāntaṃ niṣaṇṇaḥ khalu jānaśrutir brāhmaṇo bhagavantam etad avocat:
“ye ime bho gautama kulaputrā bhavantaṃ gautamam uddiśya śraddhayāgārād anagārikāṃ pravrajitāḥ, bhavāṃs teṣāṃ gautamaḥ pūrvāṅgamaḥ, bhavāṃs teṣāṃ gautamo bahukāraḥ, bhavāṃs teṣāṃ gautamaḥ samādāpayitā; bhavataś ca punar gautamasya sā janatā dṛṣṭyānugatim āpadyata” iti.
“evam etad brāhmaṇa, evam etad brāhmaṇa. ye te brāhmaṇa kulaputrā mām uddiśya śraddhayāgārād anagārikāṃ pravrajitāḥ, ahaṃ teṣāṃ pūrvāṅgamaḥ, ahaṃ teṣāṃ bahukāraḥ, ahaṃ teṣāṃ samādāpayitā; mama ca punaḥ sā janatā dṛṣṭyānugatim āpadyata” iti.
“durabhisaṃbhavāni hi khalu bho gautama araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni, duṣkaraḥ pravivekaḥ, durabhiramam ekatve, haranti manye mano vanāni samādhim alabhamānasya bhikṣor” iti.
“evam etad brāhmaṇa, evam etad brāhmaṇa. durabhisaṃbhavāni hi khalu brāhmaṇa araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni, duṣkaraḥ pravivekaḥ, durabhiramam ekatve, haranti manye mano vanāni samādhim alabhamānasya bhikṣoḥ. mahyam api khalu brāhmaṇa pūrvam eva saṃbodher anabhisaṃbuddhasya bodhisattvasyaiva sata etad abhūt: 'durabhisaṃbhavāni hi khalv araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni, duṣkaraḥ pravivekaḥ, durabhiramam ekatve, haranti manye mano vanāni samādhim alabhamānasya bhikṣor' iti.
tasya mahyaṃ brāhmaṇaitad abhūt: 'ye khalu kecic chramaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vāpariśuddhakāyakarmāntā araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiṣevante, apariśuddhakāyakarmāntasaṃdoṣahetor ha vai te bhavantaḥ śramaṇabrāhmaṇā akuśalaṃ bhayabhairavam āhvayanti. na khalu punar aham apariśuddhakāyakarmānto 'raṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiṣeve; pariśuddhakāyakarmānto 'ham asmi. ye hi vāyāryāḥ pariśuddhakāyakarmāntā araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiṣevante teṣām aham anyatama' iti. etām ahaṃ brāhmaṇa pariśuddhakāyakarmāntatām ātmani saṃpaśyamāno bhūyaḥ pralomam āpādiṣam araṇye vihārāya.

tasya mahyaṃ brāhmaṇaitad abhūt: 'ye khalu kecic chramaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vābhidhyālavaḥ kāmeṣu tīvrasārāgā araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiṣevante, abhidhyālukāmeṣutīvrasārāgasaṃdoṣahetor ha vai te bhavantaḥ śramaṇabrāhmaṇā akuśalaṃ bhayabhairavam āhvayanti. na khalu punar aham abhidhyāluḥ kāmeṣu tīvrasārāgo 'raṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiṣeve; anabhidhyālur aham asmi. ye hi vāyāryā anabhidhyālava araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiṣevante teṣām aham anyatama' iti. etām ahaṃ brāhmaṇānabhidhyālutām ātmani saṃpaśyamāno bhūyaḥ pralomam āpādiṣam araṇye vihārāya.
tasya mahyaṃ brāhmaṇaitad abhūt: 'ye khalu kecic chramaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā vyāpannacittāḥ praduṣṭamanasaṃkalpā araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiṣevante, vyāpannacittapraduṣṭamanasaṃkalpasaṃdoṣahetor ha vai te bhavantaḥ śramaṇabrāhmaṇā akuśalaṃ bhayabhairavam āhvayanti. na khalu punar ahaṃ vyāpannacittaḥ praduṣṭamanasaṃkalpo 'raṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiṣeve; maitracitto 'ham asmi. ye hi vāyāryā maitracittā araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiṣevante teṣām aham anyatama' iti. etām ahaṃ brāhmaṇa maitracittatām ātmani saṃpaśyamāno bhūyaḥ pralomam āpādiṣam araṇye vihārāya.
tasya mahyaṃ brāhmaṇaitad abhūt: 'ye khalu kecic chramaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā styānamiddhaparyutthitā araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiṣevante, styānamiddhaparyutthānasaṃdoṣahetor ha vai te bhavantaḥ śramaṇabrāhmaṇā akuśalaṃ bhayabhairavam āhvayanti. na khalu punar ahaṃ styānamiddhaparyutthito 'raṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiṣeve; vigatastyānamiddho 'ham asmi. ye hi vāyāryā vigatastyānamiddhā araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiṣevante teṣām aham anyatama' iti. etām ahaṃ brāhmaṇa vigatastyānamiddhatām ātmani saṃpaśyamāno bhūyaḥ pralomam āpādiṣam araṇye vihārāya.
tasya mahyaṃ brāhmaṇaitad abhūt: 'ye khalu kecic chramaṇā vā brāhmaṇā voddhatā avyupaśāntacittā araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiṣevante, uddhatāvyupaśāntacittasaṃdoṣahetor ha vai te bhavantaḥ śramaṇabrāhmaṇā akuśalaṃ bhayabhairavam āhvayanti. na khalu punar aham uddhato 'vyupaśāntacitto 'raṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiṣeve; vyupaśāntacitto 'ham asmi. ye hi vāyāryā vyupaśāntacittā araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiṣevante teṣām aham anyatama' iti. etām ahaṃ brāhmaṇa vyupaśāntacittatām ātmani saṃpaśyamāno bhūyaḥ pralomam āpādiṣam araṇye vihārāya.
tasya mahyaṃ brāhmaṇaitad abhūt: 'ye khalu kecic chramaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā kāṅkṣiṇo vicikitsino 'raṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiṣevante, kāṅkṣivicikitsisaṃdoṣahetor ha vai te bhavantaḥ śramaṇabrāhmaṇā akuśalaṃ bhayabhairavam āhvayanti. na khalu punar ahaṃ kāṅkṣī vicikitsy araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiṣeve; tīrṇavicikitso 'ham asmi. ye hi vāyāryāstīrṇavicikitsā araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiṣevante teṣām aham anyatama' iti. etām ahaṃ brāhmaṇa tīrṇavicikitsatām ātmani saṃpaśyamāno bhūyaḥ pralomam āpādiṣam araṇye vihārāya.
tasya mahyaṃ brāhmaṇaitad abhūt: 'ye khalu kecic chramaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vātmotkarṣakāḥ parāvaṃbhino 'raṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiṣevante, ātmotkarṣaṇaparāvaṃbhanasaṃdoṣahetor ha vai te bhavantaḥ śramaṇabrāhmaṇā akuśalaṃ bhayabhairavam āhvayanti. na khalu punar aham ātmotkarṣakaḥ parāvaṃbhy araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiṣeve; anātmotkarṣako 'parāvaṃbhy aham asmi. ye hi vāyāryā anātmotkarṣakā aparāvaṃbhino 'raṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiṣevante teṣām aham anyatama' iti. etām ahaṃ brāhmaṇānātmotkarṣakatām aparāvaṃbhitām ātmani saṃpaśyamāno bhūyaḥ pralomam āpādiṣam araṇye vihārāya.
tasya mahyaṃ brāhmaṇaitad abhūt: 'ye khalu kecic chramaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā stambhino bhīrukajātikā araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiṣevante, stambhibhīrukajātikasaṃdoṣahetor ha vai te bhavantaḥ śramaṇabrāhmaṇā akuśalaṃ bhayabhairavam āhvayanti. na khalu punar ahaṃ stambhī bhīrukajātiko 'raṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiṣeve; vigatalomaharṣo 'ham asmi. ye hi vāyāryā vigatalomaharṣā araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiṣevante teṣām aham anyatama' iti. etām ahaṃ brāhmaṇa vigatalomaharṣatām ātmani saṃpaśyamāno bhūyaḥ pralomam āpādiṣam araṇye vihārāya.
tasya mahyaṃ brāhmaṇaitad abhūt: 'ye khalu kecic chramaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā lābhasatkāraślokaṃ nikāmayamānā araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiṣevante, lābhasatkāraślokanikāmanasaṃdoṣahetor ha vai te bhavantaḥ śramaṇabrāhmaṇā akuśalaṃ bhayabhairavam āhvayanti. na khalu punar ahaṃ lābhasatkāraślokaṃ nikāmayamāno 'raṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiṣeve; alpeccho 'ham asmi. ye hi vāyāryā alpecchā araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiṣevante teṣām aham anyatama' iti. etām ahaṃ brāhmaṇālpecchatām ātmani saṃpaśyamāno bhūyaḥ pralomam āpādiṣam araṇye vihārāya.
tasya mahyaṃ brāhmaṇaitad abhūt: 'ye khalu kecic chramaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā kusīdā hīnavīryā araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiṣevante, kusīdahīnavīryasaṃdoṣahetor ha vai te bhavantaḥ śramaṇabrāhmaṇā akuśalaṃ bhayabhairavam āhvayanti. na khalu punar ahaṃ kusīdo hīnavīryo 'raṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiṣeve; ārabdhavīryo 'ham asmi. ye hi vāyāryā ārabdhavīryā araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiṣevante teṣām aham anyatama' iti. etām ahaṃ brāhmaṇārabdhavīryatām ātmani saṃpaśyamāno bhūyaḥ pralomam āpādiṣam araṇye vihārāya.
tasya mahyaṃ brāhmaṇaitad abhūt: 'ye khalu kecic chramaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā muṣitasmṛtayo 'saṃprajānānā araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiṣevante, muṣitasmṛtyasaṃprajñānasaṃdoṣahetor ha vai te bhavantaḥ śramaṇabrāhmaṇā akuśalaṃ bhayabhairavam āhvayanti. na khalu punar ahaṃ muṣitasmṛtir asaṃprajānāno 'raṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiṣeve; upasthitasmṛtir aham asmi. ye hi vāyāryā upasthitasmṛtayo 'raṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiṣevante teṣām aham anyatama' iti. etām ahaṃ brāhmaṇopasthitasmṛtitām ātmani saṃpaśyamāno bhūyaḥ pralomam āpādiṣam araṇye vihārāya.
tasya mahyaṃ brāhmaṇaitad abhūt: 'ye khalu kecic chramaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vāsamāhitā vibhrāntacittā araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiṣevante, asamāhitavibhrāntacittasaṃdoṣahetor ha vai te bhavantaḥ śramaṇabrāhmaṇā akuśalaṃ bhayabhairavam āhvayanti. na khalu punar aham asamāhito vibhrāntacitto 'raṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiṣeve; samādhisampanno 'ham asmi. ye hi vāyāryāḥ samādhisampannā araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiṣevante teṣām aham anyatama' iti. etām ahaṃ brāhmaṇa samādhisaṃpadam ātmani saṃpaśyamāno bhūyaḥ pralomam āpādiṣam araṇye vihārāya.
tasya mahyaṃ brāhmaṇaitad abhūt: 'ye khalu kecic chramaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā duṣprajñā eḍamūkā araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiṣevante, duṣprajñaiḍamūkasaṃdoṣahetor ha vai te bhavantaḥ śramaṇabrāhmaṇā akuśalaṃ bhayabhairavam āhvayanti. na khalu punar ahaṃ duṣprajña eḍamūko 'raṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiṣeve; prajñāsaṃpanno 'ham asmi. ye hi vāyāryāḥ prajñāsaṃpannā araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiṣevante teṣām aham anyatama' iti. etām ahaṃ brāhmaṇa prajñāsaṃpadam ātmani saṃpaśyamāno bhūyaḥ pralomam āpādiṣam araṇye vihārāya.
ṣoḍaśaparyāyaṃ niṣṭhitam.
tasya mahyaṃ brāhmaṇaitad abhūt: 'yan nv ahaṃ yās tā rātrayo 'bhijñātā abhilakṣitāḥ—caturdaśī pañcadaśī aṣṭamī ca pakṣasya—tathārūpāsu rātriṣu yāni tāny ārāmacaityāni vanacaityāni vṛkṣacaityāni bhīṣaṇakāni salomaharṣāṇi tathārūpeṣu śayanāsaneṣu vihareyam, apy eva nāmāhaṃ bhayabhairavaṃ paśyeyam' iti. sa khalv ahaṃ brāhmaṇāpareṇa samayena yās tā rātrayo 'bhijñātā abhilakṣitāḥ—caturdaśī pañcadaśī aṣṭamī ca pakṣasya—tathārūpāsu rātriṣu yāni tāny ārāmacaityāni vanacaityāni vṛkṣacaityāni bhīṣaṇakāni salomaharṣāṇi tathārūpeṣu śayanāsaneṣu vyahārṣam. tatra ca me brāhmaṇa viharato mṛgo vāgacchat, mayūro vā kāṣṭham apātayat, vāto vā parṇakasaṭam airayat; tasya mahyaṃ brāhmaṇaitad abhūt: 'etan nūnaṃ tad bhayabhairavam āgacchatī'ti. tasya mahyaṃ brāhmaṇaitad abhūt: 'kiṃ nu khalv aham anyadastu bhayapratikāṅkṣī viharāmi? yan nv ahaṃ yathābhūtaṃ yathābhūtasya me tad bhayabhairavam āgacchati, tathābhūtaṃ tathābhūta eva tad bhayabhairavaṃ prativineyeyam' iti. tasya mahyaṃ brāhmaṇa caṅkramamāṇasya tad bhayabhairavam āgamat. sa khalv ahaṃ brāhmaṇa naiva tāvad atiṣṭham na nyaṣīdam na nyapadye, yāvac caṅkramamāṇa eva tad bhayabhairavaṃ pratyavīnayam. tasya mahyaṃ brāhmaṇa sthitasya tad bhayabhairavam āgamat. sa khalv ahaṃ brāhmaṇa naiva tāvan nācaṅkramam na nyaṣīdam na nyapadye, yāvat sthita eva tad bhayabhairavaṃ pratyavīnayam. tasya mahyaṃ brāhmaṇa niṣaṇṇasya tad bhayabhairavam āgamat. sa khalv ahaṃ brāhmaṇa naiva tāvan nyapadye nātiṣṭham nācaṅkramam, yāvan niṣaṇṇa eva tad bhayabhairavaṃ pratyavīnayam. tasya mahyaṃ brāhmaṇa nipannasya tad bhayabhairavam āgamat. sa khalv ahaṃ brāhmaṇa naiva tāvan nyaṣīdam nātiṣṭham nācaṅkramam, yāvan nipanna eva tad bhayabhairavaṃ pratyavīnayam.
santi khalu punar brāhmaṇaike śramaṇabrāhmaṇā rātrim eva samānāṃ diveti saṃjānate, divām eva samānāṃ rātrir iti saṃjānate. idam ahaṃ teṣāṃ śramaṇabrāhmaṇānāṃ saṃmohavihārasmin vadāmi. ahaṃ khalu punar brāhmaṇa rātrim eva samānāṃ rātrir iti saṃjānāmi, divām eva samānāṃ diveti saṃjānāmi. yaṃ khalu taṃ brāhmaṇa samyag vadamāno vadet: 'asaṃmohadharmā sattvo loka utpanno bahujanahitāya bahujanasukhāya lokānukampāyārthāya hitāya sukhāya devamanuṣyāṇām' iti, mām eva taṃ samyag vadamāno vadet: 'asaṃmohadharmā sattvo loka utpanno bahujanahitāya bahujanasukhāya lokānukampāyārthāya hitāya sukhāya devamanuṣyāṇām' iti.
ārabdhaṃ khalu punar me brāhmaṇa vīryam abhūd asallīnam, upasthitā smṛtir asaṃmūḍhā, prasrabdhaḥ kāyo 'sārabdhaḥ, samāhitaṃ cittam ekāgram. sa khalv ahaṃ brāhmaṇa vivicyaiva kāmair vivicyākuśalair dharmaiḥ savitarkaṃ savicāraṃ vivekajaṃ prītisukhaṃ prathamaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya vyahārṣam. vitarkavicārāṇāṃ vyupaśamād adhyātmaṃ saṃprasādanaṃ cetasa ekodībhāvam avitarkam avicāraṃ samādhijaṃ prītisukhaṃ dvitīyaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya vyahārṣam. prītyāś ca virāgād upekṣakaś ca vyahārṣam, smṛtān saṃprajānānaḥ sukhaṃ ca kāyena pratisaṃvedayam; yaṃ tam āryā ācakṣate: 'upekṣakaḥ smṛtimān sukhavihārī'ti tṛtīyaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya vyahārṣam. sukhasya ca prahāṇād duḥkhasya ca prahāṇāt pūrvam eva saumanasyadaurmanasyānām astaṅgamād aduḥkham asukham upekṣāsmṛtipāriśuddhiṃ caturthaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya vyahārṣam.
so 'vaṃ samāhite citte pariśuddhe paryavadāte 'naṅgaṇe vigatopakleśe mṛdūbhūte karmaṇye sthite āniñjyaprāpte pūrvanivāsānusmṛtijñānāya cittam abhinyanāmayam. so 'nekavihitaṃ pūrvanivāsam anvasmaram, tadyathā—ekām api jātiṃ dve api jātī tisro 'pi jātīś catasro 'pi jātīḥ pañcāpi jātīr daśāpi jātīr viṃśatim api jātīs triṃśatam api jātīś catvāriṃśatam api jātīḥ pañcāśatam api jātīr jātiśatam api jātīsahasram api jātiśatasahasram apy anekān api saṃvartakalpān anekān api vivartakalpān anekān api saṃvartavivartakalpān: 'amutrāsam evaṃnāmā evaṃgotra evaṃvarṇa evamāhāra evaṃsukhaduḥkhapratisaṃvedy evamāyuparyantaḥ, sa tatas cyuto 'mutrodapādiṣi; tatrāpy āsam evaṃnāmā evaṃgotra evaṃvarṇa evamāhāra evaṃsukhaduḥkhapratisaṃvedy evamāyuparyantaḥ, sa tatas cyuta ihopapanna' iti. iti sākāraṃ soddeśam anekavihitaṃ pūrvanivāsam anvasmaram.
iyaṃ khalu me brāhmaṇa rātreḥ prathame yāme prathamā vidyādhigatā, avidyā nihatā vidyotpannā, tamo nihatam ālokotpannaḥ, yathā tad apramattasyātāpinaḥ prahitātmano viharataḥ.
so 'vaṃ samāhite citte pariśuddhe paryavadāte 'naṅgaṇe vigatopakleśe mṛdūbhūte karmaṇye sthite āniñjyaprāpte sattvānāṃ cyutyupapātajñānāya cittam abhinyanāmayam. sa divyena cakṣuṣā viśuddhenātikrāntamānuṣakeṇa sattvān apaśyam cyavamānān upapadyamānān hīnān praṇītān suvarṇān durvarṇān sugatān durgatān yathākarmopagān sattvān aprajānam: 'ime vata bhavantaḥ sattvāḥ kāyaduścaritena samanvāgatā vāgduścaritena samanvāgatā manoduścaritena samanvāgatā āryāṇām upavādakā mithyādṛṣṭikā mithyādṛṣṭikarmasamādānāḥ; te kāyasya bhedāt paraṃ maraṇād apāyaṃ durgatiṃ vinipātaṃ nirayam upapannāḥ. ime vā punarbhavantaḥ sattvāḥ kāyasucaritena samanvāgatā vāksucaritena samanvāgatā manaḥsucaritena samanvāgatā āryāṇām anupavādakāḥ samyagdṛṣṭikāḥ samyagdṛṣṭikarmasamādānāḥ; te kāyasya bhedāt paraṃ maraṇāt sugatiṃ svargaṃ lokam upapannā' iti. iti divyena cakṣuṣā viśuddhenātikrāntamānuṣakeṇa sattvān apaśyam cyavamānān upapadyamānān hīnān praṇītān suvarṇān durvarṇān sugatān durgatān yathākarmopagān sattvān aprajānam.
iyaṃ khalu me brāhmaṇa rātrermadhyame yāme dvitīyā vidyādhigatā, avidyā nihatā vidyotpannā, tamo nihatam ālokotpannaḥ, yathā tad apramattasyātāpinaḥ prahitātmano viharataḥ.
so 'vaṃ samāhite citte pariśuddhe paryavadāte 'naṅgaṇe vigatopakleśe mṛdūbhūte karmaṇye sthite āniñjyaprāpte āsravāṇāṃ kṣayajñānāya cittam abhinyanāmayam. so 'idaṃ duḥkham' iti yathābhūtam abhyajñāsam, 'ayaṃ duḥkhasamudaya' iti yathābhūtam abhyajñāsam, 'ayaṃ duḥkhanirodha' iti yathābhūtam abhyajñāsam, 'iyaṃ duḥkhanirodhagāminī pratipad' iti yathābhūtam abhyajñāsam. 'ima āsravā' iti yathābhūtam abhyajñāsam, 'ayam āsravasamudaya' iti yathābhūtam abhyajñāsam, 'ayam āsravanirodha' iti yathābhūtam abhyajñāsam, 'iyam āsravanirodhagāminī pratipad' iti yathābhūtam abhyajñāsam.
tasya ma evaṃ jānata evaṃ paśyataḥ kāmāsravād api cittaṃ vyamucyata, bhavāsravād api cittaṃ vyamucyata, avidyāsravād api cittaṃ vyamucyata. vimukte vimuttam iti jñānam abhūt.
'kṣīṇā jātiḥ, uṣitaṃ brahmacaryam, kṛtaṃ karaṇīyam, nāparam itthattvāyety' abhyajñāsam.
iyaṃ khalu me brāhmaṇa rātreḥ paścime yāme tṛtīyā vidyādhigatā, avidyā nihatā vidyotpannā, tamo nihatam ālokotpannaḥ, yathā tad apramattasyātāpinaḥ prahitātmano viharataḥ.
syāt khalu punas te brāhmaṇaivaṃ syāt: 'adyāpi nūnaṃ śramaṇo gautamo 'vītarāgo 'vītadveṣo 'vītamohaḥ, tasmād araṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiṣevata' iti. na khalu punar etaṃ brāhmaṇaivaṃ draṣṭavyam. dvau khalv ahaṃ brāhmaṇārthavaśau saṃpaśyamāno 'raṇyavanaprasthāni prāntāni śayanāsanāni pratiṣeve—ātmanaś ca dṛṣṭadharmasukhavihāraṃ saṃpaśyamānaḥ, paścimāṃ ca janatām anukampamāna” iti.
“anukampitarūpā vatāyaṃ bhavatā gautamena paścimā janatā, yathā tad arhatā samyaksambuddhena. abhikrāntam bho gautama. abhikrāntam bho gautama. tadyathāpi bho gautama nyubjikṛtaṃ vā utkubjīkuryāt, praticchannaṃ vā vivṛṇuyāt, mūḍhāya vā mārgam ācakṣīta, andhakāre vā tailapradyotaṃ dhārayet: 'cakṣuṣmanto rūpāṇi drakṣyantī'ti; evam eva bhavatā gautamenānekaparyāyeṇa dharmaḥ prakāśitaḥ. eṣāhaṃ bhavantaṃ gautamaṃ śaraṇaṃ gacchāmi dharmaṃ ca bhikṣusaṃghaṃ ca. upāsakaṃ māṃ bhavān gautamo dhārayatv adyato 'gre prāṇopetaṃ śaraṇaṃ gatam” iti.
