Madhyama Nikāya 3 — dharmadāyādasūktam — Inheritors/Heirs of the Dharma
evaṃ mayā śrutam—ekasmin samaye bhagavān śrāvastyāṃ vyahārṣīt jetavane 'nāthapiṇḍadasya ārāme.
tatra khalu bhagavān bhikṣūn āmantrayām āsa —bhikṣava iti. bhadanta iti te bhikṣavo bhagavantaṃ pratyaśrauṣuḥ.
bhagavān etad avocat— dharmadāyādā me bhikṣavo bhavata māmiṣadāyādāḥ. asti me yuṣmāsv anukampā — katham me śrāvakā na garhyā bhaveyur iti.
yadi yūyam tena garhyā bhaveta; aham api tena garhyo bhaveyam — āmiṣadāyādāḥ śāstuḥ śrāvakā viharanti no dharmadāyādā iti. tasmād iha me bhikṣavo dharmadāyādā bhavata māmiṣadāyādāḥ.
ihāhaṃ, bhikṣavaḥ, bhuktavān syām, pravāritaḥ paripūrṇaḥ paryavasitaḥ suhito yāvadarthaḥ; syāc ca me piṇḍapāto 'tirekadharmā charddanīyadharmā. atha dvau bhikṣū āgacchetāṃ jighatsādaurbalyaparetau. tāv aham evaṃ vadeyam— 'ahaṃ khalv asmi, bhikṣū, bhuktavān pravāritaḥ paripūrṇaḥ paryavasitaḥ suhito yāvadarthaḥ; asti ca me 'yaṃ piṇḍapāto 'tirekadharmā charddanīyadharmā. saced ākāṅkṣathaḥ, bhuñjāthām, no ced yuvāṃ bhokṣyethe, idānīm aham alpaharite vā charddayiṣyāmi, aprāṇake vā udake 'vaplāvayiṣyāmī'ti.
tatraikasya bhikṣor evaṃ syāt— 'bhagavān khalu bhuktavān pravāritaḥ paripūrṇaḥ paryavasitaḥ suhito yāvadarthaḥ; asti cāyaṃ bhagavataḥ piṇḍapāto 'tirekadharmā charddanīyadharmā. saced āvāṃ na bhokṣyāvahe, idānīṃ bhagavān alpaharite vā charddayiṣyati, aprāṇake vā udake 'vaplāvayiṣyati. uktaṃ khalu punar etad bhagavatā— “dharmadāyādā me, bhikṣavaḥ, bhavata, māmiṣadāyādā” iti. āmiṣānyataraṃ khalu punar etad yadidaṃ piṇḍapātaḥ. yan nv aham imaṃ piṇḍapātam abhuktvānenaiva jighatsādaurbalyenaivam imaṃ rātriṃdivaṃ vītināmayeyam' iti. sa taṃ piṇḍapātam abhuktvā tenaiva jighatsādaurbalyenaivaṃ taṃ rātriṃdivaṃ vītināmayet.

kiṃcāpi sa, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣus taṃ piṇḍapātaṃ bhuktvā jighatsādaurbalyaṃ prativinodyaivaṃ taṃ rātriṃdivaṃ vītināmayet, atha khalv asāv eva me pūrvo bhikṣuḥ pūjyataraś ca praśasyataraś ca. tat kasya hetoḥ? taddhi tasya, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣor dīrgharātram alpecchatāyai saṃtuṣṭyai saṃllekhāya subharatāyai vīryārambhāya saṃvartsyati.
tasmād iha me, bhikṣavaḥ, dharmadāyādā bhavata, māmiṣadāyādāḥ. asti me yuṣmāsv anukampā— 'kim iti me śrāvakā dharmadāyādā bhaveyur nāmiṣadāyādā'“ iti.
idam avocad bhagavān. idam uktvā sugata utthāyāsanād vihāraṃ prāvikṣat.
tatra khalv āyuṣmān śāriputro 'ciraprakrānte bhagavati bhikṣūn āmamantrata— “āyuṣmanto bhikṣava” iti.
“āyuṣmann” iti khalu te bhikṣava āyuṣmataḥ śāriputrasya pratyaśrauṣuḥ. āyuṣmān śāriputra etad avocat—
“kiyatā nu khalv, āyuṣmantaḥ, śāstuḥ praviviktasya viharataḥ śrāvakā vivekaṃ nānuśikṣante, kiyatā ca punaḥ śāstuḥ praviviktasya viharataḥ śrāvakā vivekam anuśikṣantī”ti?
“dūrād api khalu vayam, āyuṣmann, āgacchāma āyuṣmataḥ śāriputrasyāntikam etasya bhāṣitasyārtham ājñātum. sādhu vatāyuṣmantam eva śāriputraṃ pratibhātv etasya bhāṣitasyārthaḥ; āyuṣmataḥ śāriputrasya śrutvā bhikṣavo dhārayiṣyantī”ti.
“tena hy, āyuṣmantaḥ, śṛṇuta, sādhu manasi kuruta, bhāṣiṣye” iti.
“evam, āyuṣmann” iti khalu te bhikṣava āyuṣmataḥ śāriputrasya pratyaśrauṣuḥ. āyuṣmān śāriputra etad avocat—
“kiyatā nu khalv, āyuṣmantaḥ, śāstuḥ praviviktasya viharataḥ śrāvakā vivekaṃ nānuśikṣante? ihāyuṣmantaḥ, śāstuḥ praviviktasya viharataḥ śrāvakā vivekaṃ nānuśikṣante, yeṣāṃ ca dharmāṇāṃ śāstā prahāṇam āha, tāṃś ca dharmān na prajahati, bāhulikāś ca bhavanti, śāthalikāḥ, avakramaṇe pūrvaṃgamāḥ, praviveke nikṣiptadhuraḥ. tatrāyuṣmantaḥ, sthavirā bhikṣavas tribhiḥ sthānair garhyā bhavanti. 'śāstuḥ praviviktasya viharataḥ śrāvakā vivekaṃ nānuśikṣantī'ti— anena prathamena sthānena sthavirā bhikṣavo garhyā bhavanti. 'yeṣāṃ ca dharmāṇāṃ śāstā prahāṇam āha tāṃś ca dharmān na prajahatī'ti— anena dvitīyena sthānena sthavirā bhikṣavo garhyā bhavanti. kiyatā ca punar āyuṣmantaḥ, śāstuḥ praviviktasya viharataḥ śrāvakā vivekam anuśikṣante? ihāyuṣmantaḥ, śāstuḥ praviviktasya viharataḥ śrāvakā vivekam anuśikṣante— yeṣāṃ ca dharmāṇāṃ śāstā prahāṇam āha tāṃś ca dharmān prajahati; na ca bāhulikā bhavanti, na śāthalikāḥ, avakramaṇe nikṣiptadhuraḥ, praviveke pūrvaṃgamāḥ. tatrāyuṣmantaḥ, sthavirā bhikṣavas tribhiḥ sthānais praśasyā bhavanti. 'śāstuḥ praviviktasya viharataḥ śrāvakā vivekam anuśikṣantī'ti— anena prathamena sthānena sthavirā bhikṣavaḥ praśasyā bhavanti. tatrāyuṣmantaḥ, lobhaś ca pāpako dveṣaś ca pāpakaḥ. lobhasya ca prahāṇāya dveṣasya ca prahāṇāyāsti madhyamā pratipac cakṣuṣkaraṇī jñānakaraṇy upaśamāyābhijñāyai saṃbodhāya nirvāṇāya saṃvartate. katamā ca sā, āyuṣmantaḥ, madhyamā pratipac cakṣuṣkaraṇī jñānakaraṇy upaśamāyābhijñāyai saṃbodhāya nirvāṇāya saṃvartate? ayam evāryo 'ṣṭāṅgiko mārgaḥ, tadyathā— samyagdṛṣṭiḥ samyaksaṃkalpaḥ samyagvāk samyakkarmāntaḥ samyagājīvaḥ samyagvyāyāmaḥ samyaksmṛtiḥ samyaksamādhiḥ. iyaṃ khalu sā, āyuṣmantaḥ, madhyamā pratipac cakṣuṣkaraṇī jñānakaraṇy upaśamāyābhijñāyai saṃbodhāya nirvāṇāya saṃvartate.
tatrāyuṣmantaḥ, krodhaś ca pāpaka upanāhaś ca pāpakaḥ … pūrvavat … mrakṣaś ca pāpakaḥ pradāśaś ca pāpakaḥ, īrṣyā ca pāpikā mātsaryañ ca pāpakam, māyā ca pāpikā śāṭhyañ ca pāpakam, stambhaś ca pāpakaḥ saṃrambhaś ca pāpakaḥ, mānaś ca pāpako 'timānaś ca pāpakaḥ, madaś ca pāpakaḥ pramādaś ca pāpakaḥ. madasya ca prahāṇāya pramādasya ca prahāṇāyāsti madhyamā pratipac cakṣuṣkaraṇī jñānakaraṇy upaśamāyābhijñāyai saṃbodhāya nirvāṇāya saṃvartate. katamā ca sā, āyuṣmantaḥ, madhyamā pratipac cakṣuṣkaraṇī jñānakaraṇy upaśamāyābhijñāyai saṃbodhāya nirvāṇāya saṃvartate? ayam evāryo 'ṣṭāṅgo mārgaḥ, tadyathā— samyagdṛṣṭiḥ samyaksaṃkalpaḥ samyagvāk samyakkarmāntaḥ samyagājīvaḥ samyagvyāyāmaḥ samyaksmṛtiḥ samyaksamādhiḥ. iyaṃ khalu sā, āyuṣmantaḥ, madhyamā pratipac cakṣuṣkaraṇī jñānakaraṇy upaśamāyābhijñāyai saṃbodhāya nirvāṇāya saṃvartata” iti.
idam avocād āyuṣmān śāriputraḥ. āttamanasas te bhikṣava āyuṣmataḥ śāriputrasya bhāṣitam abhyanandiṣuḥ.
