madhyamanikāyaḥ 3 - dharmadāyādasūtram

evaṃ mayā śrutam — ekasmin samaye bhagavān śrāvastyāṃ viharati sma jetavane anāthapiṇḍadasya ārāme . tatra khalu bhagavān bhikṣūn āmantrayata — bhikṣavaḥ iti .

bhadanta iti te bhikṣavaḥ bhagavataḥ pratyaśrauṣuḥ . bhagavān etad avocat —

dharmadāyādāḥ me, bhikṣavaḥ, bhavata, mā bhūta āmiṣadāyādāḥ . asti me yuṣmāsu anukampā — kim iti me śrāvakāḥ dharmadāyādāḥ bhaveyuḥ, na āmiṣadāyādāḥ iti .

yūyaṃ ced me, bhikṣavaḥ, āmiṣadāyādāḥ bhaveta na dharmadāyādāḥ, yūyam api tena avadyāḥ bhaveta — āmiṣadāyādāḥ śāstṛśrāvakāḥ viharanti, na dharmadāyādāḥ iti ; aham api tena avadyaḥ bhaveyam — āmiṣadāyādāḥ śāstṛśrāvakāḥ viharanti, na dharmadāyādāḥ iti .

yūyaṃ ced me, bhikṣavaḥ, dharmadāyādāḥ bhaveta, na āmiṣadāyādāḥ, yūyam api tena na avadyāḥ bhaveta — dharmadāyādāḥ śāstṛśrāvakāḥ viharanti, na āmiṣadāyādāḥ iti ; aham api tena na avadyaḥ bhaveyam — dharmadāyādāḥ śāstṛśrāvakāḥ viharanti, na āmiṣadāyādāḥ iti .

tasmāt iha me, bhikṣavaḥ, dharmadāyādāḥ bhavata, mā bhūta āmiṣadāyādāḥ . asti me yuṣmāsu anukampā — kim iti me śrāvakāḥ dharmadāyādāḥ bhaveyuḥ, na āmiṣadāyādāḥ iti .

iha aham, bhikṣavaḥ, bhuktavān syām pravāritaḥ paripūrṇaḥ paryavasitaḥ suhitaḥ yāvadarthaḥ ; syāt ca me piṇḍapātaḥ atirekadharmā utsarjanīyadharmā . atha dvau bhikṣū āgacchetām jighatsādaurbalyaparītau . tau aham evaṃ vadeyam — ahaṃ khalu asmi, bhikṣū, bhuktavān pravāritaḥ paripūrṇaḥ paryavasitaḥ suhitaḥ yāvadarthaḥ ; asti ca me ayaṃ piṇḍapātaḥ atirekadharmā utsarjanīyadharmā . sacet ākāṅkṣathaḥ, bhuñjāthām, no cet yuvāṃ bhokṣyethe, idānīm aham alpaharite sthāne vā utsrakṣyāmi, aprāṇini vā udake avaplāvayiṣyāmi iti .

tatra ekasya bhikṣoḥ evam syāt — bhagavān khalu bhuktavān pravāritaḥ paripūrṇaḥ paryavasitaḥ suhitaḥ yāvadarthaḥ ; asti ca ayaṃ bhagavataḥ piṇḍapātaḥ atirekadharmā utsarjanīyadharmā . sacet āvāṃ na bhokṣyāvahe, idānīṃ bhagavān alpaharite sthāne vā utsrakṣyati, aprāṇini vā udake avaplāvayiṣyati . uktaṃ khalu punar etad bhagavatā — dharmadāyādāḥ me, bhikṣavaḥ, bhavata, mā bhūta āmiṣadāyādāḥ iti . āmiṣānyatamaṃ khalu punar etad yad iha piṇḍapātaḥ . yat nūnam aham imaṃ piṇḍapātam abhuktvā anena eva jighatsādaurbalyābhyāṃ evam imaṃ rātriṃdivam atināmayeyam iti . saḥ taṃ piṇḍapātam abhuktvā tena eva jighatsādaurbalyābhyāṃ evaṃ taṃ rātriṃdivam atināmayet .

atha dvitīyasya bhikṣoḥ evam syāt — bhagavān khalu bhuktavān pravāritaḥ paripūrṇaḥ paryavasitaḥ suhitaḥ yāvadarthaḥ ; asti ca ayaṃ bhagavataḥ piṇḍapātaḥ atirekadharmā utsarjanīyadharmā . sacet āvāṃ na bhokṣyāvahe, idānīṃ bhagavān alpaharite sthāne vā utsrakṣyati, aprāṇini vā udake avaplāvayiṣyati . yat nūnam aham imaṃ piṇḍapātaṃ bhuktvā jighatsādaurbalyaṃ prativinodya evam imaṃ rātriṃdivam atināmayeyam iti . saḥ taṃ piṇḍapātaṃ bhuktvā jighatsādaurbalyaṃ prativinodya evaṃ taṃ rātriṃdivam atināmayet .

yadyapi saḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ taṃ piṇḍapātaṃ bhuktvā jighatsādaurbalyaṃ prativinodya evaṃ taṃ rātriṃdivam atināmayet, atha khalu asau eva me pūrvaḥ bhikṣuḥ pūjyataraḥ ca praśasyataraḥ ca . tat kasya hetoḥ ? tat hi tasya, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣoḥ dīrgharātram alpecchatāyai saṃtuṣṭyai saṃlekhāya subharatāyai vīryārambhāya saṃvartiṣyate .

tasmāt iha me, bhikṣavaḥ, dharmadāyādāḥ bhavata, mā bhūta āmiṣadāyādāḥ . asti me yuṣmāsu anukampā — kim iti me śrāvakāḥ dharmadāyādāḥ bhaveyuḥ, na āmiṣadāyādāḥ iti .

idam avocat bhagavān . idam uktvā sugataḥ utthāya āsanāt vihāraṃ prāvikṣat .

tatra khalu āyuṣmān śāriputraḥ aciraprakrānte bhagavati bhikṣūn āmantrayata — āyuṣmantaḥ bhikṣavaḥ iti .

āyuṣman iti khalu te bhikṣavaḥ āyuṣmataḥ śāriputrasya pratyaśrauṣuḥ . āyuṣmān śāriputraḥ etad avocat —

kiyatā nu khalu, āyuṣmantaḥ, śāstari pravivikte viharati śrāvakāḥ vivekaṃ na anuśikṣante, kiyatā ca punaḥ śāstari pravivikte viharati śrāvakāḥ vivekam anuśikṣante iti ?

dūrāt api khalu vayam, āyuṣman, āgacchāmaḥ āyuṣmataḥ śāriputrasya antikam etasya bhāṣitasya artham ājñātum . sādhu bata āyuṣmantam eva śāriputraṃ pratibhātu etasya bhāṣitasya arthaḥ ; āyuṣmataḥ śāriputrāt śrutvā bhikṣavaḥ dhārayiṣyanti iti .

tena hi āyuṣmantaḥ, śṛṇuta, sādhu manasi kuruta, bhāṣiṣye iti .

evam āyuṣman iti khalu te bhikṣavaḥ āyuṣmataḥ śāriputrasya pratyaśrauṣuḥ . āyuṣmān śāriputraḥ etad avocat —

kiyatā nu khalu, āyuṣmantaḥ, śāstari pravivikte viharati śrāvakāḥ vivekaṃ na anuśikṣante ? iha āyuṣmantaḥ, śāstari pravivikte viharati śrāvakāḥ vivekaṃ na anuśikṣante, yeṣāṃ ca dharmāṇāṃ śāstā prahāṇam āha, tān ca dharmān na prajahati, bāhulikāḥ ca bhavanti, śithilāḥ, apakramaṇe pūrvaṅgamāḥ, praviveke nikṣiptadhurāḥ . tatra āyuṣmantaḥ, sthavirāḥ bhikṣavaḥ tribhiḥ sthānaiḥ garhyāḥ bhavanti . śāstari pravivikte viharati śrāvakāḥ vivekaṃ na anuśikṣante iti — anena prathamena sthānena sthavirāḥ bhikṣavaḥ garhyāḥ bhavanti . yeṣāṃ ca dharmāṇāṃ śāstā prahāṇam āha tān ca dharmān na prajahati iti — anena dvitīyena sthānena sthavirāḥ bhikṣavaḥ garhyāḥ bhavanti . bāhulikāḥ ca, śithilāḥ, apakramaṇe pūrvaṅgamāḥ, praviveke nikṣiptadhurāḥ iti — anena tṛtīyena sthānena sthavirāḥ bhikṣavaḥ garhyāḥ bhavanti . sthavirāḥ, āyuṣmantaḥ, bhikṣavaḥ ebhiḥ tribhiḥ sthānaiḥ garhyāḥ bhavanti . tatra āyuṣmantaḥ, madhyamāḥ bhikṣavaḥ … navāḥ bhikṣavaḥ tribhiḥ sthānaiḥ garhyāḥ bhavanti . śāstari pravivikte viharati śrāvakāḥ vivekaṃ na anuśikṣante iti — anena prathamena sthānena navāḥ bhikṣavaḥ garhyāḥ bhavanti . yeṣāṃ ca dharmāṇāṃ śāstā prahāṇam āha tān ca dharmān na prajahati iti — anena dvitīyena sthānena navāḥ bhikṣavaḥ garhyāḥ bhavanti . bāhulikāḥ ca bhavanti, śithilāḥ, apakramaṇe pūrvaṅgamāḥ, praviveke nikṣiptadhurāḥ iti — anena tṛtīyena sthānena navāḥ bhikṣavaḥ garhyāḥ bhavanti . navāḥ, āyuṣmantaḥ, bhikṣavaḥ ebhiḥ tribhiḥ sthānaiḥ garhyāḥ bhavanti . etāvatā khalu, āyuṣmantaḥ, śāstari pravivikte viharati śrāvakāḥ vivekaṃ na anuśikṣante .

tatra āyuṣmantaḥ, lobhaḥ ca pāpakaḥ dveṣaḥ ca pāpakaḥ . lobhasya ca prahāṇāya dveṣasya ca prahāṇāya asti madhyamā pratipad cakṣuṣkaraṇī jñānakaraṇī upaśamāya abhijñāyai saṃbodhāya nirvāṇāya saṃvartate . katamā ca sā, āyuṣmantaḥ, madhyamā pratipad cakṣuṣkaraṇī jñānakaraṇī upaśamāya abhijñāyai saṃbodhāya nirvāṇāya saṃvartate ? ayam eva āryaḥ aṣṭāṅgaḥ mārgaḥ, tadyathā — samyagdṛṣṭiḥ samyaksaṃkalpaḥ samyagvāk samyakkarmāntaḥ samyagājīvaḥ samyagvyāyāmaḥ samyaksmṛtiḥ samyaksamādhiḥ . iyam khalu sā, āyuṣmantaḥ, madhyamā pratipad cakṣuṣkaraṇī jñānakaraṇī upaśamāya abhijñāyai saṃbodhāya nirvāṇāya saṃvartate .

tatra āyuṣmantaḥ, krodhaḥ ca pāpakaḥ upanāhaḥ ca pāpakaḥ … mrakṣaḥ ca pāpakaḥ pradāśaḥ ca pāpakaḥ, īrṣyā ca pāpikā mātsaryaṃ ca pāpakam, māyā ca pāpikā śāṭhyaṃ ca pāpakam, stambhaḥ ca pāpakaḥ saṃrambhaḥ ca pāpakaḥ, mānaḥ ca pāpakaḥ atimānaḥ ca pāpakaḥ, madaḥ ca pāpakaḥ pramādaḥ ca pāpakaḥ . madasya ca prahāṇāya pramādasya ca prahāṇāya asti madhyamā pratipad cakṣuṣkaraṇī jñānakaraṇī upaśamāya abhijñāyai saṃbodhāya nirvāṇāya saṃvartate . katamā ca sā, āyuṣmantaḥ, madhyamā pratipad cakṣuṣkaraṇī jñānakaraṇī upaśamāya abhijñāyai saṃbodhāya nirvāṇāya saṃvartate ? ayam eva āryaḥ aṣṭāṅgaḥ mārgaḥ, tadyathā — samyagdṛṣṭiḥ samyaksaṃkalpaḥ samyagvāk samyakkarmāntaḥ samyagājīvaḥ samyagvyāyāmaḥ samyaksmṛtiḥ samyaksamādhiḥ . iyam khalu sā, āyuṣmantaḥ, madhyamā pratipad cakṣuṣkaraṇī jñānakaraṇī upaśamāya abhijñāyai saṃbodhāya nirvāṇāya saṃvartate iti .

idam avocat āyuṣmān śāriputraḥ . āttamanasaḥ te bhikṣavaḥ āyuṣmataḥ śāriputrasya bhāṣitam abhyanandiṣuḥ .

dharmadāyādasūtraṃ niṣṭhitaṃ tṛtīyam .

Notes

1. The verb chard in sanskrit means to vomit (throw up), while utsṛj in sanskrit means to be discarded - hence chard verb forms have been replaced with utsṛj to keep the meaning intact.
2. The word pradāśa (not used in classical sanskrit to my knowledge) is probably from the root daṃś (to bite/sting) referring to a person who is contentious.
3. mā bhūta āmiṣadāyādāḥ - the prohibitory word mā is normally used with the aorist form which has been supplied in the sanskrit although absent in the Pāli
4. śāstari pravivikte viharati - the genitive absolutes in the Pāli have been converted to sati saptami to agree with sanskrit norms.
5. Pāli aññatara replaced with anyatama to agree with sanskrit norms.
6. yūyaṃ ced me, bhikṣavaḥ, āmiṣadāyādāḥ bhaveta - in this phrase it seems ced should be read in place of the Pāli ca, hence used this.
