evaṃ mayā śrutam — ekasmin samaye bhagavān śrāvastyāṃ viharati sma jetavane anāthapiṇḍadasya ārāme . tatra khalu āyuṣmān śāriputraḥ bhikṣūn āmantrayata — āyuṣmantaḥ bhikṣavaḥ iti .

āyuṣman iti khalu te bhikṣavaḥ āyuṣmataḥ śāriputrasya pratyaśrauṣuḥ . āyuṣmān śāriputraḥ etad avocat —

catvāraḥ ime, āyuṣmantaḥ, pudgalāḥ santaḥ saṃvidyamānāḥ loke . katame catvāraḥ ? iha, āyuṣmantaḥ, ekaḥ pudgalaḥ sāṅgaṇaḥ eva san asti me adhyātmam aṅgaṇam iti yathābhūtaṃ na prajānāti . iha punar, āyuṣmantaḥ, ekaḥ pudgalaḥ sāṅgaṇaḥ eva san asti me adhyātmam aṅgaṇam iti yathābhūtaṃ prajānāti . iha, āyuṣmantaḥ, ekaḥ pudgalaḥ anaṅgaṇaḥ eva san na asti me adhyātmam aṅgaṇam iti yathābhūtaṃ na prajānāti . iha punar, āyuṣmantaḥ, ekaḥ pudgalaḥ anaṅgaṇaḥ eva san na asti me adhyātmam aṅgaṇam iti yathābhūtaṃ prajānāti . tatra, āyuṣmantaḥ, yaḥ ayaṃ pudgalaḥ sāṅgaṇaḥ eva san asti me adhyātmam aṅgaṇam iti yathābhūtaṃ na prajānāti, ayam anayoḥ dvayoḥ pudgalayoḥ sāṅgaṇayoḥ eva satoḥ hīnapuruṣaḥ ākhyāyate . tatra, āyuṣmantaḥ, yaḥ ayaṃ pudgalaḥ sāṅgaṇaḥ eva san asti me adhyātmam aṅgaṇam iti yathābhūtaṃ prajānāti, ayam anayoḥ dvayoḥ pudgalayoḥ sāṅgaṇayoḥ eva satoḥ śreṣṭhapuruṣaḥ ākhyāyate . tatra, āyuṣmantaḥ, yaḥ ayaṃ pudgalaḥ anaṅgaṇaḥ eva san na asti me adhyātmam aṅgaṇam iti yathābhūtaṃ na prajānāti, ayam anayoḥ dvayoḥ pudgalayoḥ anaṅgaṇayoḥ eva satoḥ hīnapuruṣaḥ ākhyāyate . tatra, āyuṣmantaḥ, yaḥ ayaṃ pudgalaḥ anaṅgaṇaḥ eva san na asti me adhyātmam aṅgaṇam iti yathābhūtaṃ prajānāti, ayam anayoḥ dvayoḥ pudgalayoḥ anaṅgaṇayoḥ eva satoḥ śreṣṭhapuruṣaḥ ākhyāyate iti .

evam ukte, āyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyanaḥ āyuṣmantaṃ śāriputram etad avocat —

kaḥ nu khalu, āyuṣman śāriputra, hetuḥ kaḥ pratyayaḥ yena anayoḥ dvayoḥ pudgalayoḥ sāṅgaṇayoḥ eva satoḥ ekaḥ hīnapuruṣaḥ ākhyāyate, ekaḥ śreṣṭhapuruṣaḥ ākhyāyate ? kaḥ punar, āyuṣman śāriputra, hetuḥ kaḥ pratyayaḥ yena anayoḥ dvayoḥ pudgalayoḥ anaṅgaṇayoḥ eva satoḥ ekaḥ hīnapuruṣaḥ ākhyāyate, ekaḥ śreṣṭhapuruṣaḥ ākhyāyate iti ?

tatra, āyuṣman, yaḥ ayaṃ pudgalaḥ sāṅgaṇaḥ eva san asti me adhyātmam aṅgaṇam iti yathābhūtaṃ na prajānāti, tasya etat pratikāṅkṣyam — na chandaṃ janayiṣyati na vyāyaṃsyate na vīryam ārapsyate tasya aṅgaṇasya prahāṇāya ; saḥ sarāgaḥ sadveṣaḥ samohaḥ sāṅgaṇaḥ saṃkliṣṭacittaḥ kālaṃ kariṣyati . yathā hi, āyuṣman, kāṃsyapātrī ābhṛtā āpaṇāt vā karmārakulāt vā rajasā ca malena ca paryavanaddhā . tām enāṃ svāmikāḥ na ca eva paribhuñjīran na ca paryavadāpayeyuḥ, rajaḥpathe ca enāṃ nikṣipeyuḥ . evam hi sā, āyuṣman, kāṃsyapātrī apareṇa samayena saṃkliṣṭatarā syāt malagṛhītā iti ?

aṅgaṇam aṅgaṇam iti, āyuṣman, ucyate . kasya nu khalu etat, āyuṣman, adhivacanaṃ yat idam aṅgaṇam iti ?

pāpakānāṃ khalu etat, āyuṣman, akuśalānām icchāvacarāṇām adhivacanam, yat idam aṅgaṇam iti .

sthānaṃ khalu punar etat, āyuṣman, vidyate yat iha kasyacit bhikṣoḥ evam icchā utpadyeta — āpattiṃ ca bata āpannaḥ syām, na ca māṃ bhikṣavaḥ jānīyuḥ āpattiṃ āpannam iti . sthānaṃ khalu punar etat, āyuṣman, vidyate yat taṃ bhikṣuṃ bhikṣavaḥ jānīyuḥ — āpattiṃ āpannam iti . jānanti māṃ bhikṣavaḥ āpattiṃ āpannam iti — iti saḥ kupitaḥ bhavati apratītaḥ . yau ca eva khalu, āyuṣman, kopāpratyayau — ubhe ete aṅgaṇe .

sthānaṃ khalu punar etat, āyuṣman, vidyate yat iha kasyacit bhikṣoḥ evam icchā utpadyeta — āpattiṃ ca bata āpannaḥ syām, rahasi māṃ bhikṣavaḥ codayeyuḥ, na saṃghamadhye iti . sthānaṃ khalu punar etat, āyuṣman, vidyate yat taṃ bhikṣuṃ bhikṣavaḥ saṃghamadhye codayeyuḥ, na rahasi . saṃghamadhye māṃ bhikṣavaḥ codayanti, na rahasi iti — iti saḥ kupitaḥ bhavati apratītaḥ . yau ca eva khalu, āyuṣman, kopāpratyayau — ubhe ete aṅgaṇe .

sthānaṃ khalu punar etat, āyuṣman, vidyate yat iha kasyacit bhikṣoḥ evam icchā utpadyeta — āpattiṃ ca bata āpannaḥ syām, sapratipudgalaḥ māṃ codayet, na apratipudgalaḥ iti . sthānaṃ khalu punar etat, āyuṣman, vidyate yat taṃ bhikṣum apratipudgalaḥ codayet, na sapratipudgalaḥ . apratipudgalaḥ māṃ codayati, na sapratipudgalaḥ iti — iti saḥ kupitaḥ bhavati apratītaḥ . yau ca eva khalu, āyuṣman, kopāpratyayau — ubhe ete aṅgaṇe .

sthānaṃ khalu punar etat, āyuṣman, vidyate yat iha kasyacit bhikṣoḥ evam icchā utpadyeta — aho bata mām eva śāstā pratipṛcchya pratipṛcchya bhikṣubhyaḥ dharmaṃ deśayet, na anyaṃ bhikṣuṃ śāstā pratipṛcchya pratipṛcchya bhikṣubhyaḥ dharmaṃ deśayet iti . sthānaṃ khalu punar etat, āyuṣman, vidyate yat anyaṃ bhikṣuṃ śāstā pratipṛcchya pratipṛcchya bhikṣubhyaḥ dharmaṃ deśayet, na taṃ bhikṣuṃ śāstā pratipṛcchya pratipṛcchya bhikṣubhyaḥ dharmaṃ deśayet . anyaṃ bhikṣuṃ śāstā pratipṛcchya pratipṛcchya bhikṣubhyaḥ dharmaṃ deśayati, na māṃ śāstā pratipṛcchya pratipṛcchya bhikṣubhyaḥ dharmaṃ deśayati iti — iti saḥ kupitaḥ bhavati apratītaḥ . yau ca eva khalu, āyuṣman, kopāpratyayau — ubhe ete aṅgaṇe .

sthānaṃ khalu punar etat, āyuṣman, vidyate yat iha kasyacit bhikṣoḥ evam icchā utpadyeta — aho bata mām eva bhikṣavaḥ puraskṛtya puraskṛtya grāmaṃ bhaktāya praviśeyuḥ, na anyaṃ bhikṣuṃ bhikṣavaḥ puraskṛtya puraskṛtya grāmaṃ bhaktāya praviśeyuḥ iti . sthānaṃ khalu punar etat, āyuṣman, vidyate yat anyaṃ bhikṣuṃ bhikṣavaḥ puraskṛtya puraskṛtya grāmaṃ bhaktāya praviśeyuḥ, na taṃ bhikṣuṃ bhikṣavaḥ puraskṛtya puraskṛtya grāmaṃ bhaktāya praviśeyuḥ . anyaṃ bhikṣuṃ bhikṣavaḥ puraskṛtya puraskṛtya grāmaṃ bhaktāya praviśanti, na māṃ bhikṣavaḥ puraskṛtya puraskṛtya grāmaṃ bhaktāya praviśanti iti — iti saḥ kupitaḥ bhavati apratītaḥ . yau ca eva khalu, āyuṣman, kopāpratyayau — ubhe ete aṅgaṇe .

sthānaṃ khalu punar etat, āyuṣman, vidyate yat iha kasyacit bhikṣoḥ evam icchā utpadyeta — aho bata aham eva labheya bhaktāgāre agrāsanam agrodakam agrapiṇḍam, na anyaḥ bhikṣuḥ labheta bhaktāgāre agrāsanam agrodakam agrapiṇḍam iti . sthānaṃ khalu punar etat, āyuṣman, vidyate yat anyaḥ bhikṣuḥ labheta bhaktāgāre agrāsanam agrodakam agrapiṇḍam, na saḥ bhikṣuḥ labheta bhaktāgāre agrāsanam agrodakam agrapiṇḍam . anyaḥ bhikṣuḥ labhate bhaktāgāre agrāsanam agrodakam agrapiṇḍam, na ahaṃ labhe bhaktāgāre agrāsanam agrodakam agrapiṇḍam iti — iti saḥ kupitaḥ bhavati apratītaḥ . yau ca eva khalu, āyuṣman, kopāpratyayau — ubhe ete aṅgaṇe .

sthānaṃ khalu punar etat, āyuṣman, vidyate yat iha kasyacit bhikṣoḥ evam icchā utpadyeta — aho bata aham eva bhaktāgāre bhuktavān anumodeya, na anyaḥ bhikṣuḥ bhaktāgāre bhuktavān anumodeta iti . sthānaṃ khalu punar etat, āyuṣman, vidyate yat anyaḥ bhikṣuḥ bhaktāgāre bhuktavān anumodeta, na saḥ bhikṣuḥ bhaktāgāre bhuktavān anumodeta . anyaḥ bhikṣuḥ bhaktāgāre bhuktavān anumodati, na ahaṃ bhaktāgāre bhuktavān anumode iti — iti saḥ kupitaḥ bhavati apratītaḥ . yau ca eva khalu, āyuṣman, kopāpratyayau — ubhe ete aṅgaṇe .

sthānaṃ khalu punar etat, āyuṣman, vidyate yat iha kasyacit bhikṣoḥ evam icchā utpadyeta — aho bata mām eva bhikṣavaḥ satkuryuḥ gurukuryuḥ mānayeyuḥ pūjayeyuḥ, na anyaṃ bhikṣuṃ bhikṣavaḥ satkuryuḥ gurukuryuḥ mānayeyuḥ pūjayeyuḥ iti . sthānaṃ khalu punar etat, āyuṣman, vidyate yat anyaṃ bhikṣuṃ bhikṣavaḥ satkuryuḥ gurukuryuḥ mānayeyuḥ pūjayeyuḥ, na taṃ bhikṣuṃ bhikṣavaḥ satkuryuḥ gurukuryuḥ mānayeyuḥ pūjayeyuḥ . anyaṃ bhikṣuṃ bhikṣavaḥ satkurvanti gurukurvanti mānayanti pūjayanti, na māṃ bhikṣavaḥ satkurvanti gurukurvanti mānayanti pūjayanti iti — iti saḥ kupitaḥ bhavati apratītaḥ . yau ca eva khalu, āyuṣman, kopāpratyayau — ubhe ete aṅgaṇe .

sthānaṃ khalu punar etat, āyuṣman, vidyate yat iha kasyacit bhikṣoḥ evam icchā utpadyeta — aho bata mām eva bhikṣuṇyaḥ … upāsakāḥ … upāsikāḥ satkuryuḥ gurukuryuḥ mānayeyuḥ pūjayeyuḥ, na anyaṃ bhikṣum upāsikāḥ satkuryuḥ gurukuryuḥ mānayeyuḥ pūjayeyuḥ iti . sthānaṃ khalu punar etat, āyuṣman, vidyate yat anyaṃ bhikṣum upāsikāḥ satkuryuḥ gurukuryuḥ mānayeyuḥ pūjayeyuḥ, na taṃ bhikṣum upāsikāḥ satkuryuḥ gurukuryuḥ mānayeyuḥ pūjayeyuḥ . anyaṃ bhikṣum upāsikāḥ satkurvanti gurukurvanti mānayanti pūjayanti, na mām upāsikāḥ satkurvanti gurukurvanti mānayanti pūjayanti iti — iti saḥ kupitaḥ bhavati apratītaḥ . yau ca eva khalu, āyuṣman, kopāpratyayau — ubhe ete aṅgaṇe .

sthānaṃ khalu punar etat, āyuṣman, vidyate yat iha kasyacit bhikṣoḥ evam icchā utpadyeta — aho bata aham eva lābhī syāṃ praṇītānāṃ cīvarāṇām, na anyaḥ bhikṣuḥ lābhī syāt praṇītānāṃ cīvarāṇām iti . sthānaṃ khalu punar etat, āyuṣman, vidyate yat anyaḥ bhikṣuḥ lābhī syāt praṇītānāṃ cīvarāṇām, na saḥ bhikṣuḥ lābhī syāt praṇītānāṃ cīvarāṇām . anyaḥ bhikṣuḥ lābhī praṇītānāṃ cīvarāṇām, na ahaṃ lābhī praṇītānāṃ cīvarāṇām iti — iti saḥ kupitaḥ bhavati apratītaḥ . yau ca eva khalu, āyuṣman, kopāpratyayau — ubhe ete aṅgaṇe .

sthānaṃ khalu punar etat, āyuṣman, vidyate yat iha kasyacit bhikṣoḥ evam icchā utpadyeta — aho bata aham eva lābhī syāṃ praṇītānāṃ piṇḍapātānām … praṇītānāṃ śayanāsanānām … praṇītānāṃ glānapratyayabhaiṣajyapariṣkārāṇām, na anyaḥ bhikṣuḥ lābhī syāt praṇītānāṃ glānapratyayabhaiṣajyapariṣkārāṇām iti . sthānaṃ khalu punar etat, āyuṣman, vidyate yat anyaḥ bhikṣuḥ lābhī syāt praṇītānāṃ glānapratyayabhaiṣajyapariṣkārāṇām, na saḥ bhikṣuḥ lābhī syāt praṇītānāṃ glānapratyayabhaiṣajyapariṣkārāṇām . anyaḥ bhikṣuḥ lābhī praṇītānāṃ glānapratyayabhaiṣajyapariṣkārāṇām, na ahaṃ lābhī praṇītānāṃ glānapratyayabhaiṣajyapariṣkārāṇām iti — iti saḥ kupitaḥ bhavati apratītaḥ . yau ca eva khalu, āyuṣman, kopāpratyayau — ubhe ete aṅgaṇe .

eṣāṃ khalu etat, āyuṣman, pāpakānām akuśalānām icchāvacarāṇām adhivacanam, yat idam aṅgaṇam iti .

yasya kasyacit, āyuṣman, bhikṣoḥ ime pāpakāḥ akuśalāḥ icchāvacarāḥ aprahīṇāḥ dṛśyante ca eva śrūyante ca, yadyapi saḥ bhavati āraṇyakaḥ prāntaśayanāsanaḥ piṇḍapātikaḥ sāvadānacārī pāṃśukūlikaḥ rūkṣacīvaradharaḥ, atha khalu enaṃ sabrahmacāriṇaḥ na ca eva satkurvanti na gurukurvanti na mānayanti na pūjayanti . tat kasya hetoḥ ? tasya hi āyuṣmataḥ ime pāpakāḥ akuśalāḥ icchāvacarāḥ aprahīṇāḥ dṛśyante ca eva śrūyante ca . yathā hi, āyuṣman, kāṃsyapātrī ābhṛtā āpaṇāt vā karmārakulāt vā pariśuddhā paryavadātā . tām enāṃ svāmikāḥ ahikuṇapaṃ vā kukkurakuṇapaṃ vā manuṣyakuṇapaṃ vā upanikṣipya anyasyāṃ kāṃsyapātryāṃ samubjya antarāpaṇaṃ pratipadyeyuḥ . tām enāṃ janaḥ dṛṣṭvā evaṃ vadet — ambho, kim iva idaṃ hriyate dhanādhānam iva iti ? tām enām utthāya apāvṛtya avalokayet . tasya sahadarśanena amanojñatā ca saṃtiṣṭheta, prātikūlyatā ca saṃtiṣṭheta, jugupsatā ca saṃtiṣṭheta ; jighatsitānām api na bhoktukāmatā syāt, prāgeva suhitānām .

pratibhātu tvām, āyuṣman maudgalyāyana iti .

ekasmin samaye aham, āyuṣman, rājagṛhe viharāmi sma girivraje . atha khalu aham, āyuṣman, pūrvāhṇasamaye paridhāya pātracīvaram ādāya rājagṛhaṃ piṇḍāya prāviśam . tena khalu punaḥ samayena śamī iti yānakāraputraḥ rathasya nemiṃ takṣati . tam enaṃ pāṇḍuputraḥ ājīvakaḥ purāṇayānakāraputraḥ pratyupasthitaḥ bhavati . atha khalu, āyuṣman, pāṇḍuputrasya ājīvakasya purāṇayānakāraputrasya evaṃ cetasi parivitarkaḥ udapādi — aho bata ayaṃ śamī iti yānakāraputraḥ asyāḥ nemyāḥ idaṃ ca vakram idaṃ ca jihmam imaṃ ca doṣaṃ takṣet, evam iyaṃ nemiḥ apagatavakrā apagatajihmā apagatadoṣā śuddhā syāt sāre pratiṣṭhitā iti . yathā yathā khalu, āyuṣman, pāṇḍuputrasya ājīvakasya purāṇayānakāraputrasya cetasi parivitarkaḥ bhavati tathā tathā śamī iti yānakāraputraḥ tasyāḥ nemyāḥ tat ca vakraṃ tat ca jihmaṃ tat ca doṣaṃ takṣati . atha khalu, āyuṣman, pāṇḍuputraḥ ājīvakaḥ purāṇayānakāraputraḥ āttamanāḥ āttamanavācaṃ niścārayām āsa — hṛdayāt hṛdayaṃ manye ājñāya takṣati iti .

evam eva khalu, āyuṣman, ye te pudgalāḥ aśraddhāḥ, jīvikārthāḥ na śraddhayā agārāt anagārikāṃ pravrajitāḥ, śaṭhāḥ māyāvinaḥ kaitavinaḥ uddhatāḥ unnaddhāḥ capalāḥ mukharāḥ vikīrṇavācaḥ, indriyeṣu aguptadvārāḥ, bhojane amātrājñāḥ, jāgaryām ananuyuktāḥ, śrāmaṇye anapekṣavantaḥ, śikṣāyāṃ na tīvragauravāḥ, bāhulikāḥ śithilāḥ, apakramaṇe pūrvaṅgamāḥ, praviveke nikṣiptadhurāḥ, kusīdāḥ hīnavīryāḥ muṣitasmṛtayaḥ asaṃprajānantaḥ asamāhitāḥ vibhrāntacittāḥ duṣprajñāḥ eḍamūkāḥ, teṣām āyuṣmān śāriputraḥ anena dharmaparyāyena hṛdayāt hṛdayaṃ manye ājñāya takṣati .

ye punar te kulaputrāḥ śraddhayā agārāt anagārikāṃ pravrajitāḥ, aśaṭhāḥ amāyāvinaḥ akaitavinaḥ anuddhatāḥ anunnaddhāḥ acapalāḥ amukharāḥ avikīrṇavācaḥ, indriyeṣu guptadvārāḥ, bhojane mātrājñāḥ, jāgaryām anuyuktāḥ, śrāmaṇye apekṣavantaḥ, śikṣāyāṃ tīvragauravāḥ, na bāhulikāḥ na śithilāḥ, apakramaṇe nikṣiptadhurāḥ, praviveke pūrvaṅgamāḥ, ārabdhavīryāḥ prahitātmānaḥ upasthitasmṛtayaḥ saṃprajānantaḥ samāhitāḥ ekāgracittāḥ prajñāvantaḥ aneḍamūkāḥ, te āyuṣmataḥ śāriputrasya imaṃ dharmaparyāyaṃ śrutvā pibanti manye, ghasanti manye vacasā ca eva manasā ca — sādhu vata, bhoḥ, sabrahmacārī akuśalāt utthāpya kuśale pratiṣṭhāpayati iti .

anaṅgaṇasūtraṃ niṣṭhitaṃ pañcamam .
