madhyamanikāyaḥ 46 - mahādharmasamādānasūtram

evaṃ mayā śrutam — ekasmin samaye bhagavān śrāvastyāṃ viharati sma jetavane anāthapiṇḍadasya ārāme . tatra khalu bhagavān bhikṣūn āmantrayata — bhikṣavaḥ iti .

bhadanta iti te bhikṣavaḥ bhagavataḥ pratyaśrauṣuḥ . bhagavān etad avocat —

yadbhūyasā, bhikṣavaḥ, sattvāḥ evaṃkāmāḥ evaṃchandāḥ evamabhiprāyāḥ — aho bata aniṣṭāḥ akāntāḥ amanojñāḥ dharmāḥ parihīyeran, iṣṭāḥ kāntāḥ manojñāḥ dharmāḥ abhivardheran iti . teṣām, bhikṣavaḥ, sattvānām evaṃkāmānām evaṃchandānām evamabhiprāyāṇām aniṣṭāḥ akāntāḥ amanojñāḥ dharmāḥ abhivardhante, iṣṭāḥ kāntāḥ manojñāḥ dharmāḥ parihīyante . tatra yūyam, bhikṣavaḥ, kaṃ hetuṃ pratyatha iti ?

bhagavanmūlakāḥ naḥ, bhadanta, dharmāḥ, bhagavannetṛkāḥ, bhagavatpratiśaraṇāḥ . sādhu vata, bhadanta, bhagavantam eva pratibhātu etasya bhāṣitasya arthaḥ ; bhagavataḥ śrutvā bhikṣavaḥ dhārayiṣyanti iti .

tena hi, bhikṣavaḥ, śṛṇuta, sādhu manasi kuruta, bhāṣiṣye iti .

evam, bhadanta iti khalu te bhikṣavaḥ bhagavataḥ pratyaśrauṣuḥ . bhagavān etad avocat —

iha, bhikṣavaḥ, aśrutavān pṛthagjanaḥ, āryāṇām adarśī āryadharmasya akovidaḥ āryadharme avinītaḥ, satpuruṣāṇām adarśī satpuruṣadharmasya akovidaḥ satpuruṣadharme avinītaḥ, sevitavyān dharmān na jānāti, asevitavyān dharmān na jānāti, bhajitavyān dharmān na jānāti, abhajitavyān dharmān na jānāti . saḥ sevitavyān dharmān ajānan asevitavyān dharmān ajānan, bhajitavyān dharmān ajānan abhajitavyān dharmān ajānan, asevitavyān dharmān sevate sevitavyān dharmān na sevate, abhajitavyān dharmān bhajati bhajitavyān dharmān na bhajati . tasya asevitavyān dharmān sevamānasya sevitavyān dharmān asevamānasya, abhajitavyān dharmān bhajamānasya bhajitavyān dharmān abhajamānasya aniṣṭāḥ akāntāḥ amanojñāḥ dharmāḥ abhivardhante, iṣṭāḥ kāntāḥ manojñāḥ dharmāḥ parihīyante . tat kasya hetoḥ ? evaṃ hi etat, bhikṣavaḥ, bhavati yathā tad aviduṣaḥ .

catvāri imāni, bhikṣavaḥ, dharmasamādānāni . katamāni catvāri ? asti, bhikṣavaḥ, dharmasamādānaṃ pratyutpannaduḥkhaṃ ca eva āyatiṃ ca duḥkhavipākam ; asti, bhikṣavaḥ, dharmasamādānaṃ pratyutpannasukham āyatiṃ duḥkhavipākam ; asti, bhikṣavaḥ, dharmasamādānaṃ pratyutpannaduḥkham āyatiṃ sukhavipākam ; asti, bhikṣavaḥ, dharmasamādānaṃ pratyutpannasukhaṃ ca eva āyatiṃ ca sukhavipākam .

tadyathā api, bhikṣavaḥ, tiktālābūḥ viṣeṇa saṃsṛṣṭā . atha puruṣaḥ āgacchet jīvitukāmaḥ amaritukāmaḥ sukhakāmaḥ duḥkhapratikūlaḥ . tam enaṃ evaṃ vadeyuḥ — ambho puruṣa, iyam tiktālābūḥ viṣeṇa saṃsṛṣṭā, sacet ākāṅkṣasi piba . tasya te pibataḥ ca eva na chādayiṣyati varṇena api gandhena api rasena api, pītvā ca punaḥ maraṇaṃ vā nigamiṣyasi maraṇamātraṃ vā duḥkham iti . saḥ tām apratisaṃkhyāya pibet, na pratinisṛjet . tasya tām pibataḥ ca eva na chādayet varṇena api gandhena api rasena api, pītvā ca punaḥ maraṇaṃ vā nigacchet maraṇamātraṃ vā duḥkham . tathopamaṃ aham, bhikṣavaḥ, idaṃ dharmasamādānaṃ vadāmi, yad idaṃ dharmasamādānaṃ pratyutpannaduḥkhaṃ ca eva āyatiṃ ca duḥkhavipākam .

tadyathā api, bhikṣavaḥ, āpānīyakaṃsaḥ varṇasaṃpannaḥ gandhasaṃpannaḥ rasasaṃpannaḥ . saḥ ca khalu viṣeṇa saṃsṛṣṭaḥ . atha puruṣaḥ āgacchet jīvitukāmaḥ amaritukāmaḥ sukhakāmaḥ duḥkhapratikūlaḥ . tam enaṃ evaṃ vadeyuḥ — ambho puruṣa, ayam āpānīyakaṃsaḥ varṇasaṃpannaḥ gandhasaṃpannaḥ rasasaṃpannaḥ . saḥ ca khalu viṣeṇa saṃsṛṣṭaḥ, sacet ākāṅkṣasi piba . tasya te pibataḥ hi khalu chādayiṣyati varṇena api gandhena api rasena api, pītvā ca punaḥ maraṇaṃ vā nigamiṣyasi maraṇamātraṃ vā duḥkham iti . saḥ tam apratisaṃkhyāya pibet, na pratinisṛjet . tasya tam pibataḥ hi khalu chādayet varṇena api gandhena api rasena api, pītvā ca punaḥ maraṇaṃ vā nigacchet maraṇamātraṃ vā duḥkham . tathopamaṃ aham, bhikṣavaḥ, idaṃ dharmasamādānaṃ vadāmi, yad idaṃ dharmasamādānaṃ pratyutpannasukham āyatiṃ duḥkhavipākam .

tadyathā api, bhikṣavaḥ, pūtimūtraṃ nānābhaiṣajyaiḥ saṃsṛṣṭam . atha puruṣaḥ āgacchet pāṇḍurogī . tam enaṃ evaṃ vadeyuḥ — ambho puruṣa, idaṃ pūtimūtraṃ nānābhaiṣajyaiḥ saṃsṛṣṭam, sacet ākāṅkṣasi piba . tasya te pibataḥ hi khalu na chādayiṣyati varṇena api gandhena api rasena api, pītvā ca punaḥ sukhī bhaviṣyasi iti . saḥ tat pratisaṃkhyāya pibet, na pratinisṛjet . tasya tat pibataḥ hi khalu na chādayet varṇena api gandhena api rasena api, pītvā ca punaḥ sukhī syāt . tathopamaṃ aham, bhikṣavaḥ, idaṃ dharmasamādānaṃ vadāmi, yad idaṃ dharmasamādānaṃ pratyutpannaduḥkham āyatiṃ sukhavipākam .

tadyathā api, bhikṣavaḥ, varṣāṇāṃ paścime māse śaratsamaye viddhe vigatavalāhake deve ādityaḥ nabhaḥ abhyutkramamāṇaḥ sarvam ākāśagataṃ tamagataṃ abhivihatya bhāsate ca tapate ca virocate ca ; evam eva khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, yad idaṃ dharmasamādānaṃ pratyutpannasukhaṃ ca eva āyatiṃ ca sukhavipākaṃ, tad anyān pṛthakśramaṇabrāhmaṇaparapravādān abhivihatya bhāsate ca tapate ca virocate ca iti .

idam avocat bhagavān . āttamanasaḥ te bhikṣavaḥ bhagavataḥ bhāṣitam abhyanandiṣuḥ .
