madhyamanikāyaḥ 45 - kṣudradharmasamādānasūtram

evaṃ mayā śrutam — ekasmin samaye bhagavān śrāvastyāṃ viharati sma jetavane anāthapiṇḍadasya ārāme . tatra khalu bhagavān bhikṣūn āmantrayata — bhikṣavaḥ iti .

bhadanta iti te bhikṣavaḥ bhagavataḥ pratyaśrauṣuḥ . bhagavān etad avocat —

catvāri imāni, bhikṣavaḥ, dharmasamādānāni . katamāni catvāri ? asti, bhikṣavaḥ, dharmasamādānaṃ pratyutpannasukham āyatiṃ duḥkhavipākam ; asti, bhikṣavaḥ, dharmasamādānaṃ pratyutpannaduḥkhaṃ ca eva āyatiṃ ca duḥkhavipākam ; asti, bhikṣavaḥ, dharmasamādānaṃ pratyutpannaduḥkham āyatiṃ sukhavipākam ; asti, bhikṣavaḥ, dharmasamādānaṃ pratyutpannasukhaṃ ca eva āyatiṃ ca sukhavipākam .

katamat ca, bhikṣavaḥ, dharmasamādānaṃ pratyutpannasukham āyatiṃ duḥkhavipākam ? santi, bhikṣavaḥ, eke śramaṇabrāhmaṇāḥ evaṃvādinaḥ evaṃdṛṣṭinaḥ — na asti kāmeṣu doṣaḥ iti . te kāmeṣu pātavyatām āpadyante . te khalu maulibaddhābhiḥ parivrājikābhiḥ paricārayanti . te evam āhuḥ — kiṃ su nāma te bhavantaḥ śramaṇabrāhmaṇāḥ kāmeṣu anāgatabhayaṃ sampaśyamānāḥ kāmānāṃ prahāṇam āhuḥ, kāmānāṃ parijñāṃ prajñāpayanti ? sukhaḥ asyāḥ parivrājikāyāḥ taruṇyāḥ mṛdukāyāḥ lomaśāyāḥ bāhvāḥ saṃsparśaḥ iti te kāmeṣu pātavyatām āpadyante . te kāmeṣu pātavyatām āpadyitvā kāyasya bhedāt paraṃ maraṇāt apāyaṃ durgatiṃ vinipātaṃ narakam upapadyante . te tatra duḥkhāḥ tīvrāḥ kharāḥ kaṭukāḥ vedanāḥ vedayanti . te evam āhuḥ — idaṃ khalu te bhavantaḥ śramaṇabrāhmaṇāḥ kāmeṣu anāgatabhayaṃ sampaśyamānāḥ kāmānāṃ prahāṇam āhuḥ, kāmānāṃ parijñāṃ prajñāpayanti, ime hi vayaṃ kāmahetuḥ kāmanidānaṃ duḥkhāḥ tīvrāḥ kharāḥ kaṭukāḥ vedanāḥ vedayāmaḥ iti .

tadyathā api, bhikṣavaḥ, grīṣmāṇāṃ paścime māse māluvāśipāṭikā phalet . atha khalu tad, bhikṣavaḥ, māluvābījam anyatarasmin śālamūle nipatet . atha khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, yā tasmin śāle adhivasitā devatā sā bhītā saṃvignā saṃtrāsam āpadyeta . atha khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, tasmin śāle adhivasitāyāḥ devatāyāḥ mitrāmātyāḥ jñātisālohitāḥ ārāmadevatāḥ vanadevatāḥ vṛkṣadevatāḥ oṣadhitṛṇavanaspatiṣu adhivasitāḥ devatāḥ saṃgamya samāgamya evaṃ samāśvāseyuḥ — mā bhavān bhaiṣīt, mā bhavān bhaiṣīt ; api eva nāmā etad māluvābījaṃ mayūraḥ vā gilet, mṛgaḥ vā khādet, dāvadāhaḥ vā dahet, vanakārmikāḥ vā uddhareyuḥ, upajikvā vā uttiṣṭhet, abījaṃ vā punar syāt iti . atha khalu tad, bhikṣavaḥ, māluvābījaṃ na eva mayūraḥ gilet, na mṛgaḥ khādet, na dāvadāhaḥ dahet, na vanakārmikāḥ uddhareyuḥ, na upajikvā uttiṣṭhet, bījaṃ ca punar asya tat prāvṛṣyakena meghena abhipravṛṣṭaṃ samyag eva virohet . sā asya māluvālatā taruṇī mṛdukā lomaśā vilambinī, sā taṃ śālam upaniṣeveta . atha khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, tasmin śāle adhivasitāyāḥ devatāyāḥ evam syāt — kiṃ su nāma te bhavantaḥ mitrāmātyāḥ jñātisālohitāḥ ārāmadevatāḥ vanadevatāḥ vṛkṣadevatāḥ oṣadhitṛṇavanaspatiṣu adhivasitāḥ devatāḥ māluvābīje anāgatabhayaṃ sampaśyamānāḥ saṃgamya samāgamya evaṃ samāśvāsiṣuḥ — mā bhavān bhaiṣīt mā bhavān bhaiṣīt, api eva nāmā etad māluvābījaṃ mayūraḥ vā gilet, mṛgaḥ vā khādet, dāvadāhaḥ vā dahet, vanakārmikāḥ vā uddhareyuḥ, upajikvā vā uttiṣṭhet, abījaṃ vā punar syāt iti ; sukhaḥ asyāḥ māluvālatāyāḥ taruṇyāḥ mṛdukāyāḥ lomaśāyāḥ vilambinyāḥ saṃsparśaḥ iti . sā taṃ śālam anupariharet . sā taṃ śālam anuparihṛtya upari viṭapiṃ kuryāt . upari viṭapiṃ kṛtvā avaghanaṃ janayet . avaghanaṃ janayitvā ye tasya śālasya mahāntaḥ mahāntaḥ skandhāḥ tān pradālayet . atha khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, tasmin śāle adhivasitāyāḥ devatāyāḥ evam syāt — idaṃ khalu te bhavantaḥ mitrāmātyāḥ jñātisālohitāḥ ārāmadevatāḥ vanadevatāḥ vṛkṣadevatāḥ oṣadhitṛṇavanaspatiṣu adhivasitāḥ devatāḥ māluvābīje anāgatabhayaṃ sampaśyamānāḥ saṃgamya samāgamya evaṃ samāśvāsiṣuḥ — mā bhavān bhaiṣīt mā bhavān bhaiṣīt, api eva nāmā etad māluvābījaṃ mayūraḥ vā gilet, mṛgaḥ vā khādet, dāvadāhaḥ vā dahet, vanakārmikāḥ vā uddhareyuḥ, upajikvā vā uttiṣṭhet abījaṃ vā punar syāt iti . yat ca ahaṃ māluvābījahetuḥ duḥkhāḥ tīvrāḥ kharāḥ kaṭukāḥ vedanāḥ vedayāmi iti .

katamat ca, bhikṣavaḥ, dharmasamādānaṃ pratyutpannaduḥkhaṃ ca eva āyatiṃ ca duḥkhavipākam ? iha, bhikṣavaḥ, ekakaḥ acelakaḥ bhavati muktācāraḥ hastāvalekhanaḥ, na-ehi-bhadantikaḥ, na-tiṣṭha-bhadantikaḥ, na abhihṛtam, na uddiśyakṛtam, na nimantraṇaṃ svādayati, saḥ na kumbhīmukhāt pratigṛhṇāti, na kaṭopīmukhāt pratigṛhṇāti, na aiḍakamantaram, na daṇḍamantaram, na musalamantaram, na dvayoḥ bhuñjamānayoḥ, na garbhinyāḥ, na pāyayamānāyāḥ, na puruṣāntaragatāyāḥ, na saṃkīrtiṣu, na yatra śvā upasthitaḥ bhavati, na yatra makṣikāḥ ṣaṇḍaṣaṇḍacāriṇyaḥ, na matsyam, na māṃsam, na surām, na maireyam, na tuṣodakaṃ pivati . saḥ ekāgārikaḥ vā bhavati ekālopiḥ, dvāgārikaḥ vā bhavati dvyālopiḥ … saptāgārikaḥ vā bhavati saptālopiḥ . ekasyāḥ api dattyāḥ yāpayati, dvābhyām api dattibhyāṃ yāpayati … saptabhiḥ api dattibhiḥ yāpayati . ekāhikam api āhāram āhārayati, dvyāhikam api āhāram āhārayati … saptāhikam api āhāram āhārayati . iti evaṃrūpam ardhamāsikam api paryāyabhaktabhojanānuyogam anuyuktaḥ viharati .

saḥ śākabhakṣaḥ vā bhavati, śyāmākabhakṣaḥ vā bhavati, nīvārabhakṣaḥ vā bhavati, daddulabhakṣaḥ vā bhavati, haṭabhakṣaḥ vā bhavati, kaṇabhakṣaḥ vā bhavati, ācāmabhakṣaḥ vā bhavati, piṇyākabhakṣaḥ vā bhavati, tṛṇabhakṣaḥ vā bhavati, gomayabhakṣaḥ vā bhavati, vanamūlaphalāhāraḥ yāpayati pravṛttaphalabhojī .

saḥ śāṇāni api dhārayati, maśāṇāni api dhārayati, śavaduṣyāṇi api dhārayati, pāṃśukūlāni api dhārayati, tirīṭāni api dhārayati, ajinam api dhārayati, ajinakṣipam api dhārayati, kuśacīram api dhārayati, valkacīram api dhārayati, phalakacīram api dhārayati, keśakambalam api dhārayati, vālakambalam api dhārayati, ulūkapakṣam api dhārayati, keśaśmaśrulocakaḥ api bhavati, keśaśmaśrulocanānuyogam anuyuktaḥ, ūrdhvasthakaḥ api bhavati, āsanapratikṣiptaḥ, utkuṭikaḥ api bhavati utkuṭikapradhānam anuyuktaḥ, kaṇṭakāpāśrayikaḥ api bhavati, kaṇṭakāpāśraye śayyāṃ kalpayati, sāyatṛtīyakam api udakāvataraṇānuyogam anuyuktaḥ viharati . iti evaṃrūpam anekavihitaṃ kāyasya ātāpanaparitāpanānuyogam anuyuktaḥ viharati . saḥ kāyasya bhedāt paraṃ maraṇāt apāyaṃ durgatiṃ vinipātaṃ narakam upapadyate . idam ucyate, bhikṣavaḥ, dharmasamādānaṃ pratyutpannaduḥkhaṃ ca eva āyatiṃ ca duḥkhavipākam .

katamat ca, bhikṣavaḥ, dharmasamādānaṃ pratyutpannaduḥkham āyatiṃ sukhavipākam ? iha, bhikṣavaḥ, ekakaḥ prakṛtyā tīvrarāgajātikaḥ bhavati, saḥ abhīkṣṇaṃ rāgajaṃ duḥkhaṃ daurmanasyaṃ pratisaṃvedayate ; prakṛtyā tīvradveṣajātikaḥ bhavati, saḥ abhīkṣṇaṃ dveṣajaṃ duḥkhaṃ daurmanasyaṃ pratisaṃvedayate ; prakṛtyā tīvramohajātikaḥ bhavati, saḥ abhīkṣṇaṃ mohajaṃ duḥkhaṃ daurmanasyaṃ pratisaṃvedayate . saḥ saha api duḥkhena, saha api daurmanasyena, aśrumukhaḥ api rudan paripūrṇaṃ pariśuddhaṃ brahmacaryaṃ carati . saḥ kāyasya bhedāt paraṃ maraṇāt sugatiṃ svargaṃ lokam upapadyate . idam ucyate, bhikṣavaḥ, dharmasamādānaṃ pratyutpannaduḥkham āyatiṃ sukhavipākam .

katamat ca, bhikṣavaḥ, dharmasamādānaṃ pratyutpannasukhaṃ ca eva āyatiṃ ca sukhavipākam ? iha, bhikṣavaḥ, ekakaḥ prakṛtyā na tīvrarāgajātikaḥ bhavati, saḥ na abhīkṣṇaṃ rāgajaṃ duḥkhaṃ daurmanasyaṃ pratisaṃvedayate ; prakṛtyā na tīvradveṣajātikaḥ bhavati, saḥ na abhīkṣṇaṃ dveṣajaṃ duḥkhaṃ daurmanasyaṃ pratisaṃvedayate ; prakṛtyā na tīvramohajātikaḥ bhavati, saḥ na abhīkṣṇaṃ mohajaṃ duḥkhaṃ daurmanasyaṃ pratisaṃvedayate . saḥ vivicya eva kāmebhyaḥ vivicya akuśalebhyaḥ dharmebhyaḥ savitarkaṃ savicāraṃ vivekajaṃ prītisukhaṃ prathamaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya viharati . vitarkavicārāṇāṃ vyupaśamāt adhyātmaṃ saṃprasādanaṃ cetasaḥ ekāgrībhāvam avitarkam avicāraṃ samādhijaṃ prītisukhaṃ dvitīyaṃ dhyānam … tṛtīyaṃ dhyānam … caturthaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya viharati . saḥ kāyasya bhedāt paraṃ maraṇāt sugatiṃ svargaṃ lokam upapadyate . idam ucyate, bhikṣavaḥ, dharmasamādānaṃ pratyutpannasukhaṃ ca eva āyatiṃ ca sukhavipākam . imāni khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, catvāri dharmasamādānāni iti .

idam avocat bhagavān . āttamanasaḥ te bhikṣavaḥ bhagavataḥ bhāṣitam abhyanandiṣuḥ .

kṣudradharmasamādānasūtraṃ niṣṭhitaṃ pañcamam .
