evam mayā śrutam—ekasmin samaye bhagavān śrāvastyāṃ vyahārṣīj jetavane 'nāthapiṇḍadasyārāme. tatra khalv āyuṣmān śāriputro bhikṣūn āmantrayata: “āyuṣmanto bhikṣava” iti.
“āyuṣmann” iti khalu te bhikṣava āyuṣmataḥ śāriputrasya pratyaśrauṣuḥ. āyuṣmān śāriputra etad avocat:
“'samyagdṛṣṭiḥ samyagdṛṣṭir' ity āyuṣmanta ucyate. kiyatā nu khalv āyuṣmanta āryaśrāvakaḥ samyagdṛṣṭir bhavati, ṛjugatāsya dṛṣṭiḥ, dharme 'vetyaprasādena samanvāgataḥ, āgata imaṃ saddharmam” iti?
“dūrato 'pi khalu vayam āyuṣmanta āgacchemāyuṣmataḥ śāriputrasyāntike 'tasya bhāṣitasyārtham ājñātum. sādhu vatāyuṣmantam eva śāriputraṃ pratibhātv etasya bhāṣitasyārthaḥ. āyuṣmataḥ śāriputrasya śrutvā bhikṣavo dhārayiṣyantī”ti.
“tena hy āyuṣmantaḥ śṛṇuta, sādhu manasi kuruta, bhāṣiṣya” iti.
“evam āyuṣmann” iti khalu te bhikṣava āyuṣmataḥ śāriputrasya pratyaśrauṣuḥ. āyuṣmān śāriputra etad avocat:
“yataḥ khalv āyuṣmanta āryaśrāvako 'kuśalañ ca prajānāti, akuśalamūlañ ca prajānāti, kuśalañ ca prajānāti, kuśalamūlañ ca prajānāti—etāvatāpi khalv āyuṣmanta āryaśrāvakaḥ samyagdṛṣṭir bhavati, ṛjugatāsya dṛṣṭiḥ, dharme 'vetyaprasādena samanvāgataḥ, āgata imaṃ saddharmam.
katamat punar āyuṣmanto 'kuśalam, katamad akuśalamūlam, katamat kuśalam, katamat kuśalamūlam? prāṇātipātaḥ khalv āyuṣmanto 'kuśalam, adattādānam akuśalam, kāmeṣu mithyācāro 'kuśalam, mṛṣāvādo 'kuśalam, piśunā vāg akuśalam, paruṣā vāg akuśalam, śamphapralāpo 'kuśalam, abhidhyākuśalam, vyāpādo 'kuśalam, mithyādṛṣṭir akuśalam—idam ucyata āyuṣmanto 'kuśalam.
katamac cāyuṣmanto 'kuśalamūlam? lobho 'kuśalamūlam, dveṣo 'kuśalamūlam, moho 'kuśalamūlam—idam ucyata āyuṣmanto 'kuśalamūlam.
katamac cāyuṣmantaḥ kuśalam? prāṇātipātād vairamaṇī kuśalam, adattādānād vairamaṇī kuśalam, kāmeṣu mithyācārād vairamaṇī kuśalam, mṛṣāvādād vairamaṇī kuśalam, piśunāyā vāco vairamaṇī kuśalam, paruṣāyā vāco vairamaṇī kuśalam, śamphapralāpād vairamaṇī kuśalam, anabhidhyā kuśalam, avyāpādaḥ kuśalam, samyagdṛṣṭiḥ kuśalam—idam ucyata āyuṣmantaḥ kuśalam.
katamac cāyuṣmantaḥ kuśalamūlam? alobhaḥ kuśalamūlam, adveṣaḥ kuśalamūlam, amohaḥ kuśalamūlam—idam ucyata āyuṣmantaḥ kuśalamūlam.

katamaḥ punar āyuṣmanto āhāraḥ, katama āhārasamudayaḥ, katama āhāranirodhaḥ, katamā āhāranirodhagāminī pratipat? catvāra ime 'yuṣmanto āhārā bhūtānāṃ vā sattvānāṃ sthitaye, sambhaveṣiṇāṃ vānugrahāya. katame catvāraḥ? kavaḍīkāra āhāra udāro vā sūkṣmo vā, sparśo dvitīyaḥ, manaḥsañcetanā tṛtīyā, vijñānaṃ caturtham. tṛṣṇāsamudayād āhārasamudayaḥ, tṛṣṇānirodhād āhāranirodhaḥ, ayam evāryo 'ṣṭāṅgiko mārga āhāranirodhagāminī pratipat, tadyathā—samyagdṛṣṭiḥ samyaksaṅkalpaḥ samyagvāk samyakkarmāntaḥ, samyagājīvaḥ samyagvyāyāmaḥ samyaksmṛtiḥ samyaksamādhiḥ.
