Madhyama Nikāya 10 — smṛtyupasthānasūktam — Application of mindfulness

evaṃ mayā śrutam—ekasmin samaye bhagavān kuruṣu viharati sma kalmāṣadamyaṃ nāma kurūṇāṃ nigamaḥ. tatra khalu bhagavān bhikṣūn āmantrayām āsa: “bhikṣavaḥ” iti.

“bhadanta” iti te bhikṣavo bhagavataḥ pratyaśrauṣuḥ. bhagavān etad avocat:

“ekāyano 'yaṃ, bhikṣavaḥ, mārgaḥ sattvānāṃ viśuddhyai, śokaparidevānāṃ samatikramāya, duḥkhadaurmanasyānām astaṅgamāya, nyāyasyādhigamāya, nirvāṇasya sākṣātkriyāyai, yad idaṃ catvāri smṛtyupasthānāni.

katamāni catvāri? iha, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ kāye kāyānupaśyī viharati ātāpī sampajānan smṛtimān, vinīya loke abhidhyādaurmanasyam; vedanāsu vedanānupaśyī viharati ātāpī sampajānan smṛtimān, vinīya loke abhidhyādaurmanasyam; citte cittānupaśyī viharati ātāpī sampajānan smṛtimān, vinīya loke abhidhyādaurmanasyam; dharmeṣu dharmānupaśyī viharati ātāpī sampajānan smṛtimān, vinīya loke abhidhyādaurmanasyam.

1. kāyānudarśanā

1.1. kāyānudarśanāprāṇāpānaparva

kathaṃ ca, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ kāye kāyānupaśyī viharati?

iha, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣur araṇyagato vā vṛkṣamūlagato vā śūnyāgāragato vā niṣīdati, paryaṅkam ābhujya, ṛjuṃ kāyaṃ praṇidhāya, parimukhaṃ smṛtim upasthāpya. sa smṛta evāśvasiti, smṛta eva praśvasiti.

dīrghaṃ vāśvasan ‘dīrgham āśvasimī’ti prajānāti, dīrghaṃ vā praśvasan ‘dīrghaṃ praśvasimī’ti prajānāti,

hrasvaṃ vāśvasan ‘hrasvam āśvasimī’ti prajānāti, hrasvaṃ vā praśvasan ‘hrasvaṃ praśvasimī’ti prajānāti.

‘sarvakāyapratisaṃvedī āśvasiṣyāmī’ti śikṣate, ‘sarvakāyapratisaṃvedī praśvasiṣyāmī’ti śikṣate.

‘praśambhayan kāyasaṃskāram āśvasiṣyāmī’ti śikṣate, ‘praśambhayan kāyasaṃskāraṃ praśvasiṣyāmī’ti śikṣate.

tadyathāpi, bhikṣavaḥ, dakṣo bhramakāro vā bhramakārāntevāsī vā dīrghaṃ vācchan ‘dīrgham ācchāmī’ti prajānāti, hrasvaṃ vācchan ‘hrasvam ācchāmī’ti prajānāti; evam eva khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣur dīrghaṃ vāśvasan ‘dīrgham āśvasimī’ti prajānāti, dīrghaṃ vā praśvasan ‘dīrghaṃ praśvasimī’ti prajānāti, hrasvaṃ vāśvasan ‘hrasvam āśvasimī’ti prajānāti, hrasvaṃ vā praśvasan ‘hrasvaṃ praśvasimī’ti prajānāti; ‘sarvakāyapratisaṃvedī āśvasiṣyāmī’ti śikṣate, ‘sarvakāyapratisaṃvedī praśvasiṣyāmī’ti śikṣate; ‘praśambhayan kāyasaṃskāram āśvasiṣyāmī’ti śikṣate, ‘praśambhayan kāyasaṃskāraṃ praśvasiṣyāmī’ti śikṣate.

ity adhyātmaṃ vā kāye kāyānupaśyī viharati, bahirdhā vā kāye kāyānupaśyī viharati, adhyātmabahirdhā vā kāye kāyānupaśyī viharati; samudayadharmānupaśyī vā kāye viharati, vyayadharmānupaśyī vā kāye viharati, samudayavyayadharmānupaśyī vā kāye viharati. ‘asti kāya’ iti vā punar asya smṛtiḥ pratyupasthitā bhavati. yāvad eva jñānamātrāya pratismṛtimātrāya aniśritaś ca viharati, na ca kiṃcil loke upādatte.

evam api khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ kāye kāyānupaśyī viharati.

prāṇāpānaparva niṣṭhitam.

1.2. kāyānudarśaneryāpathaparva

punaś cāparam, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣur gacchan vā ‘gacchāmī’ti prajānāti, sthito vā ‘sthito 'smī’ti prajānāti, niṣaṇṇo vā ‘niṣaṇṇo 'smī’ti prajānāti, śayāno vā ‘śayāno 'smī’ti prajānāti. yathā yathā vā punar asya kāyaḥ praṇihito bhavati tathā tathā taṃ prajānāti.

ity adhyātmaṃ vā kāye kāyānupaśyī viharati, bahirdhā vā kāye kāyānupaśyī viharati, adhyātmabahirdhā vā kāye kāyānupaśyī viharati; samudayadharmānupaśyī vā kāye viharati, vyayadharmānupaśyī vā kāye viharati, samudayavyayadharmānupaśyī vā kāye viharati. ‘asti kāya’ iti vā punar asya smṛtiḥ pratyupasthitā bhavati. yāvad eva jñānamātrāya pratismṛtimātrāya aniśritaś ca viharati, na ca kiṃcil loke upādatte.

1.3. kāyānudarśanāsamprajānaparva

punaś cāparam, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣur abhikrānte pratikrānte samprajānakārī bhavati, ālokite vilokite samprajānakārī bhavati, samañcite prasārite samprajānakārī bhavati, saṅghāṭīpātracīvaradhāraṇe samprajānakārī bhavati, aśite pīte khādite svādite samprajānakārī bhavati, uccārapraśrāvakarmaṇi samprajānakārī bhavati, gate sthite niṣaṇṇe supte jāgarite bhāṣite tūṣṇīmbhāve samprajānakārī bhavati.

samprajānaparva niṣṭhitam.

1.4. kāyānudarśanāpratikūlamanasikāraparva

punaś cāparam, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣur imam eva kāyam ūrdhvaṃ pādatalāt, adho keśamastakāt, tvakparyantaṃ pūritaṃ nānāprakārasyāśuceḥ pratyavekṣate: ‘asty asmin kāye keśā lomāni nakhā dantās tvag māṃsaṃ snāyur asthy asthimajjā vṛkkaṃ hṛdayaṃ yakṛt klomakaṃ plīhā pupphusam antram antraguṇam udaryaṃ karīṣaṃ pittaṃ śleṣmā pūyo lohitaṃ svedo medo 'śru vasā kheṭaḥ śiṅghāṇikā lasikā mūtram’ iti.

tadyathāpi, bhikṣavaḥ, ubhayatomukhaḥ puṭakaḥ pūrito nānāvihitasya dhānyasya, tadyathā—śālīnāṃ vrīhīṇāṃ mudgānāṃ māṣāṇāṃ tilānāṃ taṇḍulānām. tām enāṃ cakṣuṣmān puruṣo muktvā pratyavekṣeta: ‘ime śālaya ime vrīhaya ime mudgā ime māṣā ime tilā ime taṇḍulā’ iti.

evam eva khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣur imam eva kāyam ūrdhvaṃ pādatalāt, adho keśamastakāt, tvakparyantaṃ pūritaṃ nānāprakārasyāśuceḥ pratyavekṣate: ‘asty asmin kāye keśā lomāni …pe… mūtram’ iti.

1.5. kāyānudarśanādhātumanasikāraparva

punaś cāparam, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣur imam eva kāyaṃ yathāsthitaṃ yathāpraṇihitaṃ dhātuśaḥ pratyavekṣate: ‘asty asmin kāye pṛthivīdhātur abdhātus tejodhātur vāyurdhātur’ iti.

tadyathāpi, bhikṣavaḥ, dakṣo goghātako vā goghātakāntevāsī vā gāviṃ hatvā caturmahāpathe bilaśo vibhajya niṣaṇṇaḥ syāt.

evam eva khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣur imam eva kāyaṃ yathāsthitaṃ yathāpraṇihitaṃ dhātuśaḥ pratyavekṣate: ‘asty asmin kāye pṛthivīdhātur abdhātus tejodhātur vāyurdhātur’ iti.

punaś cāparam, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣus tadyathāpi paśyet śarīraṃ śmaśāne charditam ekāhamṛtaṃ vā dvyahamṛtaṃ vā tryahamṛtaṃ vā uddhmātakaṃ vinīlakaṃ vipūyakajātam. sa imam eva kāyam upasaṃharati: ‘ayam api khalu kāya evaṃdharma evaṃbhāvy evam anatīta’ iti. ity adhyātmaṃ vā kāye kāyānupaśyī viharati …pe…

asthīni pūtīni cūrṇakajātāni. sa imam eva kāyam upasaṃharati: ‘ayam api khalu kāya evaṃdharma evaṃbhāvy evam anatīta’ iti.

2. vedanānudarśanā

kathaṃ ca, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣur vedanāsu vedanānupaśyī viharati?

iha, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ sukhaṃ vā vedanāṃ vedayamānaḥ ‘sukhaṃ vedanāṃ vedayāmī’ti prajānāti.

duḥkhaṃ vā vedanāṃ vedayamānaḥ ‘duḥkhaṃ vedanāṃ vedayāmī’ti prajānāti.

aduḥkhasukhaṃ vā vedanāṃ vedayamānaḥ ‘aduḥkhasukhaṃ vedanāṃ vedayāmī’ti prajānāti.

sāmiṣaṃ vā sukhaṃ vedanāṃ vedayamānaḥ ‘sāmiṣaṃ sukhaṃ vedanāṃ vedayāmī’ti prajānāti.

nirāmiṣaṃ vā sukhaṃ vedanāṃ vedayamānaḥ ‘nirāmiṣaṃ sukhaṃ vedanāṃ vedayāmī’ti prajānāti.

sāmiṣaṃ vā duḥkhaṃ vedanāṃ vedayamānaḥ ‘sāmiṣaṃ duḥkhaṃ vedanāṃ vedayāmī’ti prajānāti.

nirāmiṣaṃ vā duḥkhaṃ vedanāṃ vedayamānaḥ ‘nirāmiṣaṃ duḥkhaṃ vedanāṃ vedayāmī’ti prajānāti.

sāmiṣaṃ vā aduḥkhasukhaṃ vedanāṃ vedayamānaḥ ‘sāmiṣaṃ aduḥkhasukhaṃ vedanāṃ vedayāmī’ti prajānāti.

3. cittānudarśanā

kathaṃ ca, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuś citte cittānupaśyī viharati?

iha, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ sarāgaṃ vā cittaṃ ‘sarāgaṃ cittam’ iti prajānāti. vītarāgaṃ vā cittaṃ ‘vītarāgaṃ cittam’ iti prajānāti. sadveṣaṃ vā cittaṃ ‘sadveṣaṃ cittam’ iti prajānāti. vītadveṣaṃ vā cittaṃ ‘vītadveṣaṃ cittam’ iti prajānāti. samohaṃ vā cittaṃ ‘samohaṃ cittam’ iti prajānāti. vītamohaṃ vā cittaṃ ‘vītamohaṃ cittam’ iti prajānāti. saṅkṣiptaṃ vā cittaṃ ‘saṅkṣiptaṃ cittam’ iti prajānāti. vikṣiptaṃ vā cittaṃ ‘vikṣiptaṃ cittam’ iti prajānāti. mahāgataṃ vā cittaṃ ‘mahāgataṃ cittam’ iti prajānāti. amahāgataṃ vā cittaṃ ‘amahāgataṃ cittam’ iti prajānāti. sottaraṃ vā cittaṃ ‘sottaraṃ cittam’ iti prajānāti. anuttaraṃ vā cittaṃ ‘anuttaraṃ cittam’ iti prajānāti. samāhitaṃ vā cittaṃ ‘samāhitaṃ cittam’ iti prajānāti. asamāhitaṃ vā cittaṃ ‘asamāhitaṃ cittam’ iti prajānāti. vimuktaṃ vā cittaṃ ‘vimuktaṃ cittam’ iti prajānāti. avimuktaṃ vā cittaṃ ‘avimuktaṃ cittam’ iti prajānāti.

4. dharmānudarśanā

4.1. dharmānudarśanānīvaraṇaparva

kathaṃ ca, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣur dharmeṣu dharmānupaśyī viharati?

iha, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣur dharmeṣu dharmānupaśyī viharati pañcasu nīvaraṇeṣu. kathaṃ ca punaḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣur dharmeṣu dharmānupaśyī viharati pañcasu nīvaraṇeṣu?

iha, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ santaṃ vādhyātmaṃ kāmacchandaṃ ‘asti me 'dhyātmaṃ kāmacchanda’ iti prajānāti, asantaṃ vādhyātmaṃ kāmacchandaṃ ‘nāsti me 'dhyātmaṃ kāmacchanda’ iti prajānāti; yathā cānuppannasya kāmacchandasyotpādo bhavati tac ca prajānāti, yathā cotpannasya kāmacchandasya prahāṇaṃ bhavati tac ca prajānāti, yathā ca prahīṇasya kāmacchandasyāyatim anutpādo bhavati tac ca prajānāti.

santaṃ vādhyātmaṃ vyāpādaṃ ‘asti me 'dhyātmaṃ vyāpāda’ iti prajānāti, asantaṃ vādhyātmaṃ vyāpādaṃ ‘nāsti me 'dhyātmaṃ vyāpāda’ iti prajānāti; yathā cānuppannasya vyāpādasyotpādo bhavati tac ca prajānāti, yathā cotpannasya vyāpādasya prahāṇaṃ bhavati tac ca prajānāti, yathā ca prahīṇasya vyāpādasyāyatim anutpādo bhavati tac ca prajānāti.

santaṃ vādhyātmaṃ styānamiddhaṃ ‘asti me 'dhyātmaṃ styānamiddham’ iti prajānāti, asantaṃ vādhyātmaṃ styānamiddhaṃ ‘nāsti me 'dhyātmaṃ styānamiddham’ iti prajānāti, yathā cānuppannasya styānamiddhasyotpādo bhavati tac ca prajānāti, yathā cotpannasya styānamiddhasya prahāṇaṃ bhavati tac ca prajānāti, yathā ca prahīṇasya styānamiddhasyāyatim anutpādo bhavati tac ca prajānāti.

santaṃ vādhyātmaṃ auddhatyakaukṛtyaṃ ‘asti me 'dhyātmaṃ auddhatyakaukṛtyam’ iti prajānāti, asantaṃ vādhyātmaṃ auddhatyakaukṛtyaṃ ‘nāsti me 'dhyātmaṃ auddhatyakaukṛtyam’ iti prajānāti; yathā cānuppannasya auddhatyakaukṛtyasyotpādo bhavati tac ca prajānāti, yathā cotpannasya auddhatyakaukṛtyasya prahāṇaṃ bhavati tac ca prajānāti, yathā ca prahīṇasya auddhatyakaukṛtyasyāyatim anutpādo bhavati tac ca prajānāti.

santāṃ vādhyātmaṃ vicikitsāṃ ‘asti me 'dhyātmaṃ vicikitsā’ iti prajānāti, asantāṃ vādhyātmaṃ vicikitsāṃ ‘nāsti me 'dhyātmaṃ vicikitsā’ iti prajānāti; yathā cānuppannāyā vicikitsāyā utpādo bhavati tac ca prajānāti, yathā cotpannāyā vicikitsāyāḥ prahāṇaṃ bhavati tac ca prajānāti, yathā ca prahīṇāyā vicikitsāyā āyatim anutpādo bhavati tac ca prajānāti.

4.2. dharmānudarśanāskandhaparva

punaś cāparam, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣur dharmeṣu dharmānupaśyī viharati pañcasūpādānaskandheṣu. kathaṃ ca punaḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣur dharmeṣu dharmānupaśyī viharati pañcasūpādānaskandheṣu? iha, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ: ‘iti rūpam, iti rūpasya samudayaḥ, iti rūpasyāstaṅgamaḥ; iti vedanā, iti vedanāyāḥ samudayaḥ, iti vedanāyā astaṅgamaḥ; iti saṃjñā, iti saṃjñāyāḥ samudayaḥ, iti saṃjñāyā astaṅgamaḥ; iti saṃskārāḥ, iti saṃskārāṇāṃ samudayaḥ, iti saṃskārāṇām astaṅgamaḥ; iti vijñānam, iti vijñānasya samudayaḥ, iti vijñānasyāstaṅgama’ iti;

‘ekāyano 'yaṃ, bhikṣavaḥ, mārgaḥ sattvānāṃ viśuddhyai śokaparidevānāṃ samatikramāya duḥkhadaurmanasyānām astaṅgamāya nyāyasyādhigamāya nirvāṇasya sākṣātkriyāyai yad idaṃ catvāri smṛtyupasthānāni’ iti. iti yat tad uktam, idam etat pratītyoktam iti.
