madhyamanikāyaḥ 10 - smṛtyupasthānasūtram
evaṃ mayā śrutam — ekasmin samaye bhagavān kuruṣu viharati sma kalmāṣadamye nāma kurūṇāṃ nigame . tatra khalu bhagavān bhikṣūn āmantrayata — bhikṣavaḥ iti .
bhadanta iti te bhikṣavaḥ bhagavataḥ pratyaśrauṣuḥ . bhagavān etad avocat —
ekāyanaḥ ayam, bhikṣavaḥ, mārgaḥ sattvānāṃ viśuddhyai, śokaparidevānāṃ samatikramāya, duḥkhadaurmanasyānām astaṃgamāya, nyāyasya adhigamāya, nirvāṇasya sākṣātkriyāyai, yad idaṃ catvāri smṛtyupasthānāni .
katamāni catvāri ? iha, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ kāye kāyānupaśyī viharati ātāpī saṃprajānan smṛtimān, vinīya loke abhidhyādaurmanasye ; vedanāsu vedanānupaśyī viharati ātāpī saṃprajānan smṛtimān, vinīya loke abhidhyādaurmanasye ; citte cittānupaśyī viharati ātāpī saṃprajānan smṛtimān, vinīya loke abhidhyādaurmanasye ; dharmeṣu dharmānupaśyī viharati ātāpī saṃprajānan smṛtimān, vinīya loke abhidhyādaurmanasye .

1. kāyānupaśyanā
1.1. kāyānupaśyanā prāṇāpānaparva
kathaṃ ca, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ kāye kāyānupaśyī viharati ?
iha, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ araṇyagataḥ vā vṛkṣamūlagataḥ vā śūnyāgāragataḥ vā niṣīdati, paryaṅkam ābhujya, ṛjuṃ kāyaṃ praṇidhāya, parimukhaṃ smṛtim upasthāpya . saḥ smṛtimān eva āśvasiti, smṛtimān eva praśvasiti .
dīrghaṃ vā āśvasan dīrgham āśvasimi iti prajānāti, dīrghaṃ vā praśvasan dīrghaṃ praśvasimi iti prajānāti .
hrasvaṃ vā āśvasan hrasvam āśvasimi iti prajānāti, hrasvaṃ vā praśvasan hrasvaṃ praśvasimi iti prajānāti .
sarvakāyapratisaṃvedī āśvasiṣyāmi iti śikṣate, sarvakāyapratisaṃvedī praśvasiṣyāmi iti śikṣate .
praśrambhayan kāyasaṃskāram āśvasiṣyāmi iti śikṣate, praśrambhayan kāyasaṃskāraṃ praśvasiṣyāmi iti śikṣate .
tadyathā api, bhikṣavaḥ, dakṣaḥ bhramakāraḥ vā bhramakārāntevāsī vā dīrghaṃ vā āñchan dīrgham āñchāmi iti prajānāti, hrasvaṃ vā āñchan hrasvam āñchāmi iti prajānāti ; evam eva khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ dīrghaṃ vā āśvasan dīrgham āśvasimi iti prajānāti, dīrghaṃ vā praśvasan dīrghaṃ praśvasimi iti prajānāti, hrasvaṃ vā āśvasan hrasvam āśvasimi iti prajānāti, hrasvaṃ vā praśvasan hrasvaṃ praśvasimi iti prajānāti ; sarvakāyapratisaṃvedī āśvasiṣyāmi iti śikṣate, sarvakāyapratisaṃvedī praśvasiṣyāmi iti śikṣate ; praśrambhayan kāyasaṃskāram āśvasiṣyāmi iti śikṣate, praśrambhayan kāyasaṃskāraṃ praśvasiṣyāmi iti śikṣate .
iti adhyātmaṃ vā kāye kāyānupaśyī viharati, bahirdhā vā kāye kāyānupaśyī viharati, adhyātmabahirdhā vā kāye kāyānupaśyī viharati ; samudayadharmānupaśyī vā kāyasmin viharati, vyayadharmānupaśyī vā kāyasmin viharati, samudayavyayadharmānupaśyī vā kāyasmin viharati . asti kāyaḥ iti vā punar asya smṛtiḥ pratyupasthitā bhavati . yāvat eva jñānamātrāyai pratismṛtimātrāyai aniśritaḥ ca viharati, na ca kiṃcit loke upādatte .
evam api khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ kāye kāyānupaśyī viharati .
ānāpānaparvaṃ niṣṭhitam .
1.2. kāyānupaśyaneryāpathaparvam
punaḥ ca aparam, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ gacchan vā gacchāmi iti prajānāti, sthitaḥ vā sthitaḥ asmi iti prajānāti, niṣaṇṇaḥ vā niṣaṇṇaḥ asmi iti prajānāti, śayānaḥ vā śayānaḥ asmi iti prajānāti . yathā yathā vā punar asya kāyaḥ praṇihitaḥ bhavati tathā tathā enaṃ prajānāti .
iti adhyātmaṃ vā kāye kāyānupaśyī viharati, bahirdhā vā kāye kāyānupaśyī viharati, adhyātmabahirdhā vā kāye kāyānupaśyī viharati ; samudayadharmānupaśyī vā kāyasmin viharati, vyayadharmānupaśyī vā kāyasmin viharati, samudayavyayadharmānupaśyī vā kāyasmin viharati . asti kāyaḥ iti vā punar asya smṛtiḥ pratyupasthitā bhavati . yāvat eva jñānamātrāyai pratismṛtimātrāyai aniśritaḥ ca viharati, na ca kiṃcit loke upādatte .

1.3. kāyānupaśyanāsaṃprajānaparvam
punaḥ ca aparam, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ abhikrāntapratikrāntayoḥ saṃprajānakārī bhavati, ālokitavilokitayoḥ saṃprajānakārī bhavati, samiṅgitaprasāritayoḥ saṃprajānakārī bhavati, saṃghāṭīpātracīvaradhāraṇe saṃprajānakārī bhavati, aśite pīte khādite svādite saṃprajānakārī bhavati, uccāraprasrāvakarmani saṃprajānakārī bhavati, gate sthite niṣaṇṇe supte jāgarite bhāṣite tūṣṇīṃbhāve saṃprajānakārī bhavati .
iti adhyātmaṃ vā kāye kāyānupaśyī viharati …
evam api khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ kāye kāyānupaśyī viharati .
saṃprajānaparvaṃ niṣṭhitam .
1.4. kāyānupaśyanāpratikūlamanasikāraparvam
punaḥ ca aparam, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ imam eva kāyam ūrdhvaṃ pādatalāt, adhaḥ keśamastakāt, tvakparyantaṃ pūrṇaṃ nānāprakārasya aśuceḥ pratyavekṣate — asti asmin kāye keśāḥ lomāni nakhāḥ dantāḥ tvak māṃsaṃ snāyuḥ asthi asthimajjā vṛkkau hṛdayaṃ yakṛt kloma plīhā phupphusaḥ antrāṇi antraguṇaḥ audaryaṃ karīṣam pittaṃ śleṣmā pūyaṃ lohitaṃ svedaḥ medaḥ aśru vasā kheṭaḥ siṅghāṇakaṃ lasikā mūtram iti .
tadyathā api, bhikṣavaḥ, ubhayatomukhī puṭolikā pūrṇā nānāvihitasya dhānyasya, tadyathā — śālīnāṃ vrīhīṇāṃ mudgānāṃ māṣāṇāṃ tilānāṃ taṇḍulānām . tām enaṃ cakṣuṣmān puruṣaḥ unmocya pratyavekṣeta — ime śālayaḥ ime vrīhayaḥ ime mudgāḥ ime māṣāḥ ime tilāḥ ime taṇḍulāḥ iti .
evam eva khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ imam eva kāyam ūrdhvaṃ pādatalāt, adhaḥ keśamastakāt, tvakparyantaṃ pūrṇaṃ nānāprakārasya aśuceḥ pratyavekṣate — asti asmin kāye keśāḥ lomāni … mūtram iti .

1.5. kāyānupaśyanādhātumanasikāraparvam
punaḥ ca aparam, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ imam eva kāyaṃ yathāsthitam yathāpraṇihitaṃ dhātuśaḥ pratyavekṣate — asti asmin kāye pṛthivīdhātuḥ abdhātuḥ tejodhātuḥ vāyudhātuḥ iti .
tadyathā api, bhikṣavaḥ, dakṣaḥ goghātakaḥ vā goghātakāntevāsī vā gāṃ vadhvā caturmahāpathe bilaśaḥ vibhajya niṣaṇṇaḥ syāt .
evam eva khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ imam eva kāyaṃ yathāsthitaṃ yathāpraṇihitaṃ dhātuśaḥ pratyavekṣate — asti asmin kāye pṛthivīdhātuḥ abdhātuḥ tejodhātuḥ vāyudhātuḥ iti .

punaḥ ca aparam, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ tadyathā api paśyet śarīraṃ śavāśraye charditam ekāhamṛtaṃ vā dvyahamṛtaṃ vā tryahamṛtaṃ vā uddhmātakaṃ vinīlakaṃ vipūyakajātam . saḥ imam eva kāyam upasaṃharati — ayam api khalu kāyaḥ evaṃdharmā evaṃbhāvī evam anatītaḥ iti . iti adhyātmaṃ vā kāye kāyānupaśyī viharati …

2. vedanānupaśyanā
kathaṃ ca, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ vedanāsu vedanānupaśyī viharati ?
iha, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ sukhāṃ vā vedanāṃ vedayamānaḥ sukhāṃ vedanāṃ vedayāmi iti prajānāti .
duḥkhāṃ vā vedanāṃ vedayamānaḥ duḥkhāṃ vedanāṃ vedayāmi iti prajānāti .
aduḥkhāsukhāṃ vā vedanāṃ vedayamānaḥ aduḥkhāsukhāṃ vedanāṃ vedayāmi iti prajānāti .
sāmiṣāṃ vā sukhāṃ vedanāṃ vedayamānaḥ sāmiṣāṃ sukhāṃ vedanāṃ vedayāmi iti prajānāti .
nirāmiṣāṃ vā sukhāṃ vedanāṃ vedayamānaḥ nirāmiṣāṃ sukhāṃ vedanāṃ vedayāmi iti prajānāti .

kathaṃ ca, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ citte cittānupaśyī viharati ?
iha, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ sarāgaṃ vā cittaṃ sarāgaṃ cittam iti prajānāti . vītarāgaṃ vā cittaṃ vītarāgaṃ cittam iti prajānāti . sadveṣaṃ vā cittaṃ sadveṣaṃ cittam iti prajānāti . vītadveṣaṃ vā cittaṃ vītadveṣaṃ cittam iti prajānāti . samohaṃ vā cittaṃ samohaṃ cittam iti prajānāti . vītamohaṃ vā cittaṃ vītamohaṃ cittam iti prajānāti . saṃkṣiptaṃ vā cittaṃ saṃkṣiptaṃ cittam iti prajānāti . vikṣiptaṃ vā cittaṃ vikṣiptaṃ cittam iti prajānāti . mahadgataṃ vā cittaṃ mahadgataṃ cittam iti prajānāti . amahadgataṃ vā cittaṃ amahadgataṃ cittam iti prajānāti . sottaraṃ vā cittaṃ sottaraṃ cittam iti prajānāti . anuttaraṃ vā cittaṃ anuttaraṃ cittam iti prajānāti . samāhitaṃ vā cittaṃ samāhitaṃ cittam iti prajānāti . asamāhitaṃ vā cittaṃ asamāhitaṃ cittam iti prajānāti . vimuktaṃ vā cittaṃ vimuktaṃ cittam iti prajānāti . avimuktaṃ vā cittaṃ avimuktaṃ cittam iti prajānāti .

4. dharmānupaśyanā 4.1. dharmānupaśyanānīvaraṇaparvam
kathaṃ ca, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ dharmeṣu dharmānupaśyī viharati ?
iha, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ dharmeṣu dharmānupaśyī viharati pañcasu nīvaraṇeṣu . kathaṃ ca punar, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ dharmeṣu dharmānupaśyī viharati pañcasu nīvaraṇeṣu ?
iha, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ santaṃ vā adhyātmaṃ kāmacchandaṃ asti me adhyātmaṃ kāmacchandaḥ iti prajānāti, asantaṃ vā adhyātmaṃ kāmacchandaṃ na asti me adhyātmaṃ kāmacchandaḥ iti prajānāti ; yathā ca anutpannasya kāmacchandasya utpādaḥ bhavati tat ca prajānāti, yathā ca utpannasya kāmacchandasya prahāṇaṃ bhavati tat ca prajānāti, yathā ca prahīṇasya kāmacchandasya āyatim anutpādaḥ bhavati tat ca prajānāti .
santaṃ vā adhyātmaṃ vyāpādaṃ asti me adhyātmaṃ vyāpādaḥ iti prajānāti, asantaṃ vā adhyātmaṃ vyāpādaṃ na asti me adhyātmaṃ vyāpādaḥ iti prajānāti ; yathā ca anutpannasya vyāpādasya utpādaḥ bhavati tat ca prajānāti, yathā ca utpannasya vyāpādasya prahāṇaṃ bhavati tat ca prajānāti, yathā ca prahīṇasya vyāpādasya āyatim anutpādaḥ bhavati tat ca prajānāti .
santaṃ vā adhyātmaṃ styānamiddhaṃ asti me adhyātmaṃ styānamiddham iti prajānāti, asantaṃ vā adhyātmaṃ styānamiddhaṃ na asti me adhyātmaṃ styānamiddham iti prajānāti, yathā ca anutpannasya styānamiddhasya utpādaḥ bhavati tat ca prajānāti, yathā ca utpannasya styānamiddhasya prahāṇaṃ bhavati tat ca prajānāti, yathā ca prahīṇasya styānamiddhasya āyatim anutpādaḥ bhavati tat ca prajānāti .
santaṃ vā adhyātmaṃ auddhatyakaukṛtye asti me adhyātmaṃ auddhatyakaukṛtye iti prajānāti, asantaṃ vā adhyātmaṃ auddhatyakaukṛtye na asti me adhyātmaṃ auddhatyakaukṛtye iti prajānāti ; yathā ca anutpannasya auddhatyakaukṛtyayoḥ utpādaḥ bhavati tat ca prajānāti, yathā ca utpannasya auddhatyakaukṛtyayoḥ prahāṇaṃ bhavati tat ca prajānāti, yathā ca prahīṇasya auddhatyakaukṛtyayoḥ āyatim anutpādaḥ bhavati tat ca prajānāti .
satīṃ vā adhyātmaṃ vicikitsām asti me adhyātmaṃ vicikitsā iti prajānāti, asatīṃ vā adhyātmaṃ vicikitsām na asti me adhyātmaṃ vicikitsā iti prajānāti ; yathā ca anutpannāyāḥ vicikitsāyāḥ utpādaḥ bhavati tat ca prajānāti, yathā ca utpannāyāḥ vicikitsāyāḥ prahāṇaṃ bhavati tat ca prajānāti, yathā ca prahīṇāyāḥ vicikitsāyāḥ āyatim anutpādaḥ bhavati tat ca prajānāti .

4.2. dharmānupaśyanāskandhaparvam
punaḥ ca aparam, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ dharmeṣu dharmānupaśyī viharati pañcasu upādānaskandheṣu . kathaṃ ca punar, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ dharmeṣu dharmānupaśyī viharati pañcasu upādānaskandheṣu ? iha, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ — iti rūpam, iti rūpasya samudayaḥ, iti rūpasya astaṃgamaḥ ; iti vedanā, iti vedanāyāḥ samudayaḥ, iti vedanāyāḥ astaṃgamaḥ ; iti saṃjñā, iti saṃjñāyāḥ samudayaḥ, iti saṃjñāyāḥ astaṃgamaḥ ; iti saṃskārāḥ, iti saṃskārāṇāṃ samudayaḥ, iti saṃskārāṇām astaṃgamaḥ ; iti vijñānam, iti vijñānasya samudayaḥ, iti vijñānasya astaṃgamaḥ iti ;
iti adhyātmaṃ vā dharmeṣu dharmānupaśyī viharati, bahirdhā vā dharmeṣu dharmānupaśyī viharati, adhyātmabahirdhā vā dharmeṣu dharmānupaśyī viharati ; samudayadharmānupaśyī vā dharmeṣu viharati, vyayadharmānupaśyī vā dharmeṣu viharati, samudayavyayadharmānupaśyī vā dharmeṣu viharati . santi dharmāḥ iti vā punar asya smṛtiḥ pratyupasthitā bhavati . yāvat eva jñānamātrāyai pratismṛtimātrāyai aniśritaḥ ca viharati, na ca kiṃcit loke upādatte .
evam api khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ dharmeṣu dharmānupaśyī viharati pañcasu upādānaskandheṣu .

4.3. dharmānupaśyanāyatanaparvam
punaḥ ca aparam, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ dharmeṣu dharmānupaśyī viharati ṣaṭsu ādhyātmikabāhyeṣu āyataneṣu . kathaṃ ca punar, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ dharmeṣu dharmānupaśyī viharati ṣaṭsu ādhyātmikabāhyeṣu āyataneṣu ?
iha, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ cakṣuḥ ca prajānāti, rūpāṇi ca prajānāti, yat ca tadubhayaṃ pratītya utpadyate saṃyojanaṃ tat ca prajānāti, yathā ca anutpannasya saṃyojanasya utpādaḥ bhavati tat ca prajānāti, yathā ca utpannasya saṃyojanasya prahāṇaṃ bhavati tat ca prajānāti, yathā ca prahīṇasya saṃyojanasya āyatim anutpādaḥ bhavati tat ca prajānāti .
śrotraṃ ca prajānāti, śabdān ca prajānāti, yat ca tadubhayaṃ pratītya utpadyate saṃyojanaṃ tat ca prajānāti, yathā ca anutpannasya saṃyojanasya utpādaḥ bhavati tat ca prajānāti, yathā ca utpannasya saṃyojanasya prahāṇaṃ bhavati tat ca prajānāti, yathā ca prahīṇasya saṃyojanasya āyatim anutpādaḥ bhavati tat ca prajānāti .

punaḥ ca aparam, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ dharmeṣu dharmānupaśyī viharati saptasu saṃbodhyaṅgeṣu . kathaṃ ca punar, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ dharmeṣu dharmānupaśyī viharati saptasu saṃbodhyaṅgeṣu ?
iha, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ santaṃ vā adhyātmaṃ smṛtisaṃbodhyaṅgam asti me adhyātmaṃ smṛtisaṃbodhyaṅgam iti prajānāti, asantaṃ vā adhyātmaṃ smṛtisaṃbodhyaṅgam na asti me adhyātmaṃ smṛtisaṃbodhyaṅgam iti prajānāti, yathā ca anutpannasya smṛtisaṃbodhyaṅgasya utpādaḥ bhavati tat ca prajānāti, yathā ca utpannasya smṛtisaṃbodhyaṅgasya bhāvanāyāḥ paripūriḥ bhavati tat ca prajānāti .
santaṃ vā adhyātmaṃ dharmavicayasaṃbodhyaṅgam asti me adhyātmaṃ dharmavicayasaṃbodhyaṅgam iti prajānāti, asantaṃ vā adhyātmaṃ dharmavicayasaṃbodhyaṅgam na asti me adhyātmaṃ dharmavicayasaṃbodhyaṅgam iti prajānāti, yathā ca anutpannasya dharmavicayasaṃbodhyaṅgasya utpādaḥ bhavati tat ca prajānāti, yathā ca utpannasya dharmavicayasaṃbodhyaṅgasya bhāvanāyāḥ paripūriḥ bhavati tat ca prajānāti . santaṃ vā adhyātmaṃ vīryasaṃbodhyaṅgam asti me adhyātmaṃ vīryasaṃbodhyaṅgam iti prajānāti, asantaṃ vā adhyātmaṃ vīryasaṃbodhyaṅgam na asti me adhyātmaṃ vīryasaṃbodhyaṅgam iti prajānāti, yathā ca anutpannasya vīryasaṃbodhyaṅgasya utpādaḥ bhavati tat ca prajānāti, yathā ca utpannasya vīryasaṃbodhyaṅgasya bhāvanāyāḥ paripūriḥ bhavati tat ca prajānāti . santaṃ vā adhyātmaṃ prītisaṃbodhyaṅgam asti me adhyātmaṃ prītisaṃbodhyaṅgam iti prajānāti, asantaṃ vā adhyātmaṃ prītisaṃbodhyaṅgam na asti me adhyātmaṃ prītisaṃbodhyaṅgam iti prajānāti, yathā ca anutpannasya prītisaṃbodhyaṅgasya utpādaḥ bhavati tat ca prajānāti, yathā ca utpannasya prītisaṃbodhyaṅgasya bhāvanāyāḥ paripūriḥ bhavati tat ca prajānāti . santaṃ vā adhyātmaṃ praśrabdhisaṃbodhyaṅgam asti me adhyātmaṃ praśrabdhisaṃbodhyaṅgam iti prajānāti, asantaṃ vā adhyātmaṃ praśrabdhisaṃbodhyaṅgam na asti me adhyātmaṃ praśrabdhisaṃbodhyaṅgam iti prajānāti, yathā ca anutpannasya praśrabdhisaṃbodhyaṅgasya utpādaḥ bhavati tat ca prajānāti, yathā ca utpannasya praśrabdhisaṃbodhyaṅgasya bhāvanāyāḥ paripūriḥ bhavati tat ca prajānāti . santaṃ vā adhyātmaṃ samādhisaṃbodhyaṅgam asti me adhyātmaṃ samādhisaṃbodhyaṅgam iti prajānāti, asantaṃ vā adhyātmaṃ samādhisaṃbodhyaṅgam na asti me adhyātmaṃ samādhisaṃbodhyaṅgam iti prajānāti, yathā ca anutpannasya samādhisaṃbodhyaṅgasya utpādaḥ bhavati tat ca prajānāti, yathā ca utpannasya samādhisaṃbodhyaṅgasya bhāvanāyāḥ paripūriḥ bhavati tat ca prajānāti . santaṃ vā adhyātmaṃ upekṣāsaṃbodhyaṅgam asti me adhyātmaṃ upekṣāsaṃbodhyaṅgam iti prajānāti, asantaṃ vā adhyātmaṃ upekṣāsaṃbodhyaṅgam na asti me adhyātmaṃ upekṣāsaṃbodhyaṅgam iti prajānāti, yathā ca anutpannasya upekṣāsaṃbodhyaṅgasya utpādaḥ bhavati tat ca prajānāti, yathā ca utpannasya upekṣāsaṃbodhyaṅgasya bhāvanāyāḥ paripūriḥ bhavati tat ca prajānāti .

punaḥ ca aparam, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ dharmeṣu dharmānupaśyī viharati caturṣu āryasatyeṣu .
kathaṃ ca punar, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ dharmeṣu dharmānupaśyī viharati caturṣu āryasatyeṣu ? iha, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ idaṃ duḥkham iti yathābhūtaṃ prajānāti, ayaṃ duḥkhasamudayaḥ iti yathābhūtaṃ prajānāti, ayaṃ duḥkhanirodhaḥ iti yathābhūtaṃ prajānāti, iyam duḥkhanirodhagāminī pratipad iti yathābhūtaṃ prajānāti .

tiṣṭhantu, bhikṣavaḥ, sapta varṣāṇi . yaḥ hi kaścit, bhikṣavaḥ, imāni catvāri smṛtyupasthānāni evaṃ bhāvayet ṣaṭ varṣāṇi … pañca varṣāṇi … catvāri varṣāṇi … trīṇi varṣāṇi … dve varṣe … ekaṃ varṣam … tiṣṭhatu, bhikṣavaḥ, ekaṃ varṣam . yaḥ hi kaścit, bhikṣavaḥ, imāni catvāri smṛtyupasthānāni evaṃ bhāvayet sapta māsān, tasya dvayoḥ phalayoḥ anyataraṃ phalaṃ pratikāṅkṣyam dṛṣṭe eva dharme ājñā ; sati vā upādiśeṣe anāgāmitā . tiṣṭhantu, bhikṣavaḥ, sapta māsāḥ . yaḥ hi kaścit, bhikṣavaḥ, imāni catvāri smṛtyupasthānāni evaṃ bhāvayet ṣaṭ māsān … pañca māsān … caturaḥ māsān … trīn māsān … dvau māsau … ekaṃ māsam … ardhamāsam … tiṣṭhatu, bhikṣavaḥ, ardhamāsaḥ . yaḥ hi kaścit, bhikṣavaḥ, imāni catvāri smṛtyupasthānāni evaṃ bhāvayet saptāham, tasya dvayoḥ phalayoḥ anyataraṃ phalaṃ pratikāṅkṣyam dṛṣṭe eva dharme ājñā sati vā upādiśeṣe anāgāmitā iti .
ekāyanaḥ ayam, bhikṣavaḥ, mārgaḥ sattvānāṃ viśuddhyai śokaparidevayoḥ samatikramāya duḥkhadaurmanasyayoḥ astaṃgamāya nyāyasya adhigamāya nirvāṇasya sākṣātkriyāyai yad idaṃ catvāri smṛtyupasthānāni iti . iti yat tad uktam, idam etat pratītya uktam iti .
