Saṃyukta Nikāya 1.24 — Restraining the Mind

“यतो यतो मनो निवारयेत्,
न दुःखमेत्येनं ततस्ततः।
यः सर्वतो मनो निवारयेत्,
स सर्वतो दुःखात्प्रमुच्यते॥”
“yato yato mano nivārayet,
na duḥkham eti naṃ tatas tataḥ.
sa sarvato mano nivārayet,
sa sarvato duḥkhāt pramucyate.”
[A deity:] “From whatever one restrains the mind,
from that one does not come to sorrow.
One who restrains the mind from everything;
that person is freed from all sorrow.”

“न सर्वतो मनो निवारयेत्,
न मनः संयतत्वमागतम्।
यतश्च यतश्च पापकं,
ततस्ततो मनो निवारयेदिति॥”
“na sarvato mano nivārayet,
na manaḥ saṃyatatvam āgatam.
yataś ca yataś ca pāpakaṃ,
tatas tato mano nivārayed iti.”
[The Bhagavān:] “One should not restrain the mind from everything,
nor is the mind to be brought under [complete] restraint.
From whatever source that is evil,
from that one should restrain the mind.”
