saṃyuktanikāyaḥ 1.25 — arhatsūktam
Saṃyukta Nikāya 1.25 — The Arhat
“यो भवेद्भिक्षुरर्हन् कृतकृत्यः 1),
क्षीणास्रवोऽन्तिमदेहधारी।
अहं वदामीत्यपि स वदेत्,
मां वदन्तीत्यपि स वदेदिति॥”
“yo bhaved bhikṣur arhan kṛtakṛtyaḥ,
kṣīṇāsravo ’ntimadehadhārī.
ahaṃ vadāmīti api sa vadet,
māṃ vadantīti api sa vaded iti.”
[A deity:] “A monk who is an Arhat, who has done what was to be done,
with taints destroyed, bearing his final body.
Would he still say 'I speak,'
or would he say 'They speak to me'?”
“यो भवेद्भिक्षुरर्हन् कृतकृत्यः,
क्षीणास्रवोऽन्तिमदेहधारी।
अहं वदामीत्यपि स वदेत्,
मां वदन्तीत्यपि स वदेत्।
लोके संज्ञां कुशलो विदित्वा,
व्यवहारमात्रेण स व्यवहरेदिति॥”

loke saṃjñāṃ kuśalo viditvā,
vyavahāramātreṇa sa vyavahared iti.”
[The Bhagavān:] “A monk who is an Arhat, who has done what was to be done,
with taints destroyed, bearing his final body,
would say 'I speak,'
and he would say 'They speak to me.'
Skillful, knowing the conventions of the world,
he would use them merely as expressions.”
“यो भवेद्भिक्षुरर्हन् कृतकृत्यः,
क्षीणास्रवोऽन्तिमदेहधारी।
मानं नु खलु स उपगम्य भिक्षुः,
अहं वदामीत्यपि स वदेत्।
मां वदन्तीत्यपि स वदेदिति॥”
“yo bhaved bhikṣur arhan kṛtakṛtyaḥ,
kṣīṇāsravo ’ntimadehadhārī.
mānaṃ nu khalu sa upagamya bhikṣuḥ,
ahaṃ vadāmīti api sa vadet.
māṃ vadantīti api sa vaded iti.”
[A deity:] “A monk who is an Arhat, who has done what was to be done,
with taints destroyed, bearing his final body;
does he, having approached conceit, that monk,
say 'I speak,'
or 'They speak to me'?”
“प्रहीणमानस्य न सन्ति ग्रन्था,
विधूपितास्तस्य मानग्रन्थाः सर्वे।
स वीतिवृत्तो मन्यतां सुमेधा,
अहं वदामीत्यपि स वदेत्॥
मां वदन्तीत्यपि स वदेत्।
लोके संज्ञां कुशलो विदित्वा।
व्यवहारमात्रेण स व्यवहरेदिति॥”
“prahīṇamānasya na santi granthā,
vidhūpitās tasya mānagranthāḥ sarve.
sa vītivṛtto manyatāṃ sumedhā,
ahaṃ vadāmīti api sa vadet.
māṃ vadantīti api sa vaded.
loke saṃjñāṃ kuśalo viditvā.
vyavahāramātreṇa sa vyavahared iti.”
[The Bhagavān:] “For one whose conceit is abandoned, there are no bonds;
all his bonds of conceit are shaken off.
That wise one, having overcome the notion 'I think,'
would say 'I speak,'
and he would say 'They speak to me.'
Skillful, knowing the conventions of the world,
he would use them merely as expressions.”
