Madhyama Āgama 3 — nagaropamasūktam — The Simile of the (Frontier) City
evaṃ mayā śrutam — ekasmin samaye bhagavān śrāvastyāṃ vyahārṣīj jetavane 'nāthapiṇḍadasyārāme.
tatra khalu bhagavān bhikṣūn āmantrayām āsa — tadyathāpi nāma bhikṣavo rājñaḥ pratyantanagaraṃ saptabhir nagaropaskāraiḥ supariṣkṛtaṃ bhavati, caturbhiś cāhāraiḥ saṃpannaṃ sulabhair adurlabhaiḥ, tena rājñaḥ pratyantanagaraṃ na śakyate bāhyena pratyarthikena pratyamitreṇa bhettum, anyatrāntarato bhedāt.
kathaṃ ca rājñaḥ pratyantanagaraṃ saptabhir nagaropaskāraiḥ supariṣkṛtaṃ bhavati? iha rājñaḥ pratyantanagare aṭṭālakā māpitā bhavanti, bhūmiś ca dṛḍhīkṛtā bhavaty abhedyā, ābhyantarāṇāṃ guptaye bāhyānāṃ pratyarthikānāṃ pratyamitrāṇāṃ nivāraṇāya. idaṃ rājñaḥ pratyantanagaraṃ prathamena nagaropaskāreṇa supariṣkṛtaṃ bhavati.
punar aparaṃ rājñaḥ pratyantanagare parikhā khātā bhavati atīva gambhīrā ca vistṛtā ca susaṃskṛtā niśrayabhūtā ca, ābhyantarāṇāṃ guptaye bāhyānāṃ pratyarthikānāṃ pratyamitrāṇāṃ nivāraṇāya. idaṃ rājñaḥ pratyantanagaraṃ dvitīyena nagaropaskāreṇa supariṣkṛtaṃ bhavati.
punar aparaṃ rājñaḥ pratyantanagare samantād anuparyāyapathaḥ kṛto bhavati vivṛtaḥ samo viśālaś ca, ābhyantarāṇāṃ guptaye bāhyānāṃ pratyarthikānāṃ pratyamitrāṇāṃ nivāraṇāya. idaṃ rājñaḥ pratyantanagaraṃ tṛtīyena nagaropaskāreṇa supariṣkṛtaṃ bhavati.
punar aparaṃ rājñaḥ pratyantanagare caturvidho balakāyaḥ saṃnipatito bhavati, yaduta hastikāyo 'śvakāyo rathakāyaḥ pattikāyaś ca, ābhyantarāṇāṃ guptaye bāhyānāṃ pratyarthikānāṃ pratyamitrāṇāṃ nivāraṇāya. idaṃ rājñaḥ pratyantanagaraṃ caturthena nagaropaskāreṇa supariṣkṛtaṃ bhavati.
punar aparaṃ rājñaḥ pratyantanagara āyudhaṃ sannihitaṃ bhavati — dhanūṃṣi śarāḥ prāsās triśūlāni ca, ābhyantarāṇāṃ guptaye bāhyānāṃ pratyarthikānāṃ pratyamitrāṇāṃ nivāraṇāya. idaṃ rājñaḥ pratyantanagaraṃ pañcamena nagaropaskāreṇa supariṣkṛtaṃ bhavati.
punar aparaṃ rājñaḥ pratyantanagare dauvāriko mahāmātraḥ sthāpito bhavati paṇḍito vyakto medhāvī śūraś ca vīraś copāyakuśalaś ca, sadvṛttānāṃ praveśayitā asadvṛttānāṃ nivārayitā, ābhyantarāṇāṃ guptaye bāhyānāṃ pratyarthikānāṃ pratyamitrāṇāṃ nivāraṇāya. idaṃ rājñaḥ pratyantanagaraṃ ṣaṣṭhena nagaropaskāreṇa supariṣkṛtaṃ bhavati.
punar aparaṃ rājñaḥ pratyantanagare prākāro māpito bhavaty uccas tathā dṛḍhaś ca lepyasudhākarmakṛtaḥ, ābhyantarāṇāṃ guptaye bāhyānāṃ pratyarthikānāṃ pratyamitrāṇāṃ nivāraṇāya. idaṃ rājñaḥ pratyantanagaraṃ saptamena nagaropaskāreṇa supariṣkṛtaṃ bhavati.
kathaṃ ca rājñaḥ pratyantanagaraṃ caturbhiś cāhāraiḥ saṃpannaṃ bhavati sulabhair adurlabhaiḥ? iha rājñaḥ pratyantanagara udakaṃ tṛṇaṃ dārucopakaraṇaṃ ca sannihitaṃ bhavati, ābhyantarāṇāṃ guptaye bāhyānāṃ pratyarthikānāṃ pratyamitrāṇāṃ nivāraṇāya. idaṃ rājñaḥ pratyantanagaraṃ prathamena cāhāreṇa saṃpannaṃ bhavati sulabhenādurlabhena.
punar aparaṃ rājñaḥ pratyantanagare prabhūtaṃ śālivrīhisasyaṃ saṃcitam anuguptaṃ ca bhavati yavaś ca, ābhyantarāṇāṃ guptaye bāhyānāṃ pratyarthikānāṃ pratyamitrāṇāṃ nivāraṇāya. idaṃ rājñaḥ pratyantanagaraṃ dvitīyena cāhāreṇa saṃpannaṃ bhavati sulabhenādurlabhena.
punar aparaṃ rājñaḥ pratyantanagare prabhūtās tilamāṣamudgāś ca saṃcitā bhavanti, ābhyantarāṇāṃ guptaye bāhyānāṃ pratyarthikānāṃ pratyamitrāṇāṃ nivāraṇāya. idaṃ rājñaḥ pratyantanagaraṃ tṛtīyena cāhāreṇa saṃpannaṃ bhavati sulabhenādurlabhena.
punar aparaṃ rājñaḥ pratyantanagare sarpis tailaṃ madhv ikṣuḥ phāṇitaṃ matsyo lavaṇaṃ śuṣkamāṃsaṃ ceti sarvaṃ sannihitaṃ bhavati, ābhyantarāṇāṃ guptaye bāhyānāṃ pratyarthikānāṃ pratyamitrāṇāṃ nivāraṇāya. idaṃ rājñaḥ pratyantanagaraṃ caturthena cāhāreṇa saṃpannaṃ bhavati sulabhenādurlabhena.
evaṃ rājñaḥ pratyantanagaraṃ saptabhir nagaropaskāraiḥ supariṣkṛtaṃ bhavati, caturbhiś cāhāraiḥ saṃpannaṃ sulabhair adurlabhaiḥ, tena rājñaḥ pratyantanagaraṃ na śakyate bāhyena pratyarthikena pratyamitreṇa bhettum, anyatrāntarato bhedāt.
evam evāryaśrāvakaḥ saptabhiḥ saddharmaiḥ samanvāgato bhavati, catvāry abhicaitasikāni dhyānāni dṛṣṭadharmasukhavihārān labhate sulabhān adurlabhān. tenāryaśrāvako na śakyate māreṇa pāpīyasāvatāram āsādayitum, nāpi pāpakair akuśalair dharmaiḥ saṃkliṣṭair bhavahetukaiḥ. na ca kleśaiḥ saṃkliśyate, na punaḥ punarbhavāya pratyājāyate.
kathaṃ cāryaśrāvakaḥ saptabhiḥ saddharmaiḥ samanvāgato bhavati? ihāryaśrāvakaḥ śrāddho bhavati, dṛḍhaśraddhas tathāgate. tasya śraddhā mūlajātā bhavati pratiṣṭhitā, ahāryā śramaṇena vā brāhmaṇena vā devena vā māreṇa vā brahmaṇā vā kenacid vā loke. evam āryaśrāvakaḥ prathamena saddharmeṇa samanvāgato bhavati.
punar aparam āryaśrāvako hrīmān bhavati, hrīyate hrīyitavyena, hrīyate pāpakair akuśalair dharmaiḥ saṃkliṣṭaiḥ paunarbhavikaiḥ sadarathair duḥkhavipākair āyatyāṃ jātijarāmaraṇīyaiḥ. evam āryaśrāvako dvitīyena saddharmeṇa samanvāgato bhavati.
punar aparam āryaśrāvako vyapatrapī bhavati, vyapatrapate vyapatrapitavyena, vyapatrapate pāpakair akuśalair dharmaiḥ saṃkliṣṭaiḥ paunarbhavikaiḥ sadarathair duḥkhavipākair āyatyāṃ jātijarāmaraṇīyaiḥ. evam āryaśrāvakas tṛtīyena saddharmeṇa samanvāgato bhavati.
punar aparam āryaśrāvaka ārabdhavīryo viharaty akuśalānāṃ dharmāṇāṃ prahāṇāya kuśalānāṃ dharmāṇām upasaṃpadāyai. sthāmavān bhavati dṛḍhaparākramo 'nikṣiptadhuraḥ kuśaleṣu dharmeṣu. evam āryaśrāvakaścaturthena saddharmeṇa samanvāgato bhavati.
punar aparam āryaśrāvako bahuśruto bhavati śrutadharaḥ śrutasannicayaḥ. ye te dharmā ādau kalyāṇā madhye kalyāṇā paryavasāne kalyāṇāḥ, sārthāḥ suvyañjanāḥ kevalaparipūrṇaṃ pariśuddhaṃ brahmacaryam abhivadanti, tathārūpā asya dharmā bahuśrutā bhavanti dhṛtā vacasā sahasraśaḥ paricitā manasānuvīkṣitā dṛṣṭyā supratividdhāḥ. evam āryaśrāvakaḥ pañcamena saddharmeṇa samanvāgato bhavati.
punar aparam āryaśrāvakaḥ smṛtimān bhavati paramayā smṛtinipuṇatayā samanvāgataḥ cirakṛtam api cirabhāṣitam api smartānusmartā bhavati. evam āryaśrāvakaḥ ṣaṣṭhena saddharmeṇa samanvāgato bhavati.
punar aparam āryaśrāvakaḥ prajñāvān bhavaty udayāstaṅgaminyā prajñayā samanvāgataḥ āryayā nirvedhikayā samyagduḥkhakṣayagāminyā. evam āryaśrāvakaḥ saptamena saddharmeṇa samanvāgato bhavati.
kathaṃ cāryaśrāvakaś catvāry abhicaitasikāni dhyānāni dṛṣṭadharmasukhavihārān labhate sulabhān adurlabhān? ihāryaśrāvako vivicyeva kāmair vivicya pāpakair akuśalair dharmaiḥ savitarkaṃ savicāraṃ vivekajaṃ prītisukhaṃ prathamaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya viharati. idam āryaśrāvakaḥ prathamam abhicaitasikaṃ dhyānaṃ dṛṣṭadharmasukhavihāraṃ labhate sulabham adurlabham.
punar aparam āryaśrāvako vitarkavicārāṇāṃ vyupaśamād adhyātmasaṃprasādāc cetasa ekotībhāvād avitarkam avicāraṃ samādhijaṃ prītisukhaṃ dvitīyaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya viharati. idam āryaśrāvako dvitīyam abhicaitasikaṃ dhyānaṃ dṛṣṭadharmasukhavihāraṃ labhate sulabham adurlabham.
punar aparam āryaśrāvakaḥ prīter virāgād upekṣako viharati smṛtimān saṃprajānan, sukhaṃ ca kāyena pratisaṃvedayati yan tad āryā ācakṣate upekṣakaḥ smṛtimān sukhavihārīti niṣprītikaṃ tṛtīyaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya viharati. idam āryaśrāvakas tṛtīyam abhicaitasikaṃ dhyānaṃ dṛṣṭadharmasukhavihāraṃ labhate sulabham adurlabham.
punar aparam āryaśrāvakaḥ sukhasya ca prahāṇād duḥkhasya ca prahāṇāt pūrvam eva saumanasyadaurmanasyayor astaṅgamād aduḥkham asukham upekṣāsmṛtipariśuddhiṃ caturthaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya viharati. idam āryaśrāvakaścaturtham abhicaitasikaṃ dhyānaṃ dṛṣṭadharmasukhavihāraṃ labhate sulabham adurlabham.
evam āryaśrāvakaḥ saptabhiḥ saddharmaiḥ samanvāgato bhavati, catvāry abhicaitasikāni dhyānāni dṛṣṭadharmasukhavihārān labhate sulabhān adurlabhān. na śakyate māreṇa pāpīyasāvatāram āsādayitum, nāpi pāpakair akuśalair dharmaiḥ saṃkliṣṭair bhavahetukaiḥ. na ca kleśaiḥ saṃkliśyate, na punaḥ punarbhavāya pratyājāyate.
