Saṃyukta Nikāya 1.19 — The Hut

“कच्चित् ते कुटिका नास्ति, कच्चिन् नास्ति कुलायः।
कच्चित् सन्तानो नास्ति, कच्चिन् मुक्तोऽसि बन्धनात्” इति।
“kaccit te kuṭikā nāsti, kaccin nāsti kulāyaḥ.
kaccit santāno nāsti, kaccin mukto ’si bandhanāt” iti.
“Is it true you have no hut? Is it true you have no nest?
Is it true you have no lineage? Is it true you are free from bondage?”

“स घ मे कुटिका नास्ति, स घ नास्ति कुलायः।
स घ सन्तानो नास्ति, स घ मुक्तोऽस्मि बन्धनात्” इति।
“sa gha me kuṭikā nāsti, sa gha nāsti kulāyaḥ.
sa gha santāno nāsti, sa gha mukto ’smi bandhanāt” iti.
“Indeed, I have no hut. Indeed, I have no nest.
Indeed, I have no lineage. Indeed, I am free from bondage.”

“कामित्यहं कुटिकां ब्रवीमि, कं ते ब्रवीमि कुलायम्।
कं ते सन्तानं ब्रवीमि, किमित्यहं ब्रवीमि बन्धनम्” इति।
“kām ity ahaṃ kuṭikāṃ bravīmi, kaṃ te bravīmi kulāyam.
kaṃ te santānaṃ bravīmi, kim ity ahaṃ bravīmi bandhanam” iti.
“What do I call a hut? What do I call a your nest?
What do I call your lineage? What do I call bondage?”

“मातरं कुटिकां ब्रवीषि, भार्यां ब्रवीषि कुलायम्।
पुत्रान् सन्तानं ब्रवीषि, तृष्णां मे ब्रवीषि बन्धनम्” इति।
“mātaraṃ kuṭikāṃ bravīṣi, bhāryāṃ bravīṣi kulāyam.
putrān santānaṃ bravīṣi, tṛṣṇāṃ me bravīṣi bandhanam” iti.
“You call a mother the hut; you call a wife the nest.
You call sons the lineage; you tell me craving is the bondage.”

“साधु ते कुटिका नास्ति, साधु नास्ति कुलायः।
साधु सन्तानो नास्ति, साधु मुक्तोऽसि बन्धनात्” इति।
“sādhu te kuṭikā nāsti, sādhu nāsti kulāyaḥ.
sādhu santāno nāsti, sādhu mukto ’si bandhanāt” iti.
“It is good you have no hut; good you have no nest.
It is good you have no lineage; good you are free from bondage.”
