सूक्तनिपातः १.१ — उरगसूक्तम्
sūktanipātaḥ 1.1 — uragasūktam
Sūkta Nipāta 1.1 — The Serpent


य उत्पतितं विनयति क्रोधं,
विसृतं सर्पविषमिवौषधैः।
स भिक्षुर्जहात्यवारपारम्,
उरगो जीर्णामिव त्वचं पुराणीम्॥

ya utpatitaṃ vinayati krodhaṃ,
visṛtaṃ sarpaviṣam iva auṣadhaiḥ.
sa bhikṣur jahāti avārapāram,
urago jīrṇām iva tvacaṃ purāṇīm.

He who restrains arisen anger, like spreading snake venom is checked by medicinal herbs;
that monk gives up this shore and the far shore, like a snake its old, worn-out skin.


यो रागमुदच्छिददशेषं,
भिसपुष्पमिव सरोरुहं विगृह्य।
स भिक्षुर्जहात्यवारपारम्,
उरगो जीर्णामिव त्वचं पुराणीम्॥

yo rāgam udacchidad aśeṣaṃ,
bhisapuṣpam iva saroruhaṃ vigṛhya.
sa bhikṣur jahāti avārapāram,
urago jīrṇām iva tvacaṃ purāṇīm.

He who has completely cut off passion, like plucking a lotus growing in a lake;
that monk gives up this shore and the far shore, like a snake its old, worn-out skin.


यस्तृष्णामुदच्छिददशेषं,
सरितं शीघ्रस्रवामिव विशोष्य।
स भिक्षुर्जहात्यवारपारम्,
उरगो जीर्णामिव त्वचं पुराणीम्॥

yas tṛṣṇām udacchidad aśeṣaṃ,
saritaṃ śīghrasravāmiva viśoṣya.
sa bhikṣur jahāti avārapāram,
urago jīrṇām iva tvacaṃ purāṇīm.

He who has completely cut off craving, like having dried up a fast-flowing river;
that monk gives up this shore and the far shore, like a snake its old, worn-out skin.


यो मानमुद्ववर्हाशेषं,
नडसेतुमिव सुदुर्बलं महौघः।
स भिक्षुर्जहात्यवारपारम्,
उरगो जीर्णामिव त्वचं पुराणीम्॥

yo mānam udvavarhāśeṣaṃ,
naḍasetum iva sudurbalaṃ mahaughaḥ.
sa bhikṣur jahāti avārapāram,
urago jīrṇām iva tvacaṃ purāṇīm.

He who has completely destroyed conceit, as a great flood destroys a very weak bridge of reeds;
that monk gives up this shore and the far shore, like a snake its old, worn-out skin.


यो नाध्यगाद्भवेषु सारं,
विचिन्वन् पुष्पमिवोदुम्बरेषु।
स भिक्षुर्जहात्यवारपारम्,
उरगो जीर्णामिव त्वचं पुराणीम्॥

yo nādhyagād bhaveṣu sāraṃ,
vicinvan puṣpam iva udumbareṣu.
sa bhikṣur jahāti avārapāram,
urago jīrṇām iva tvacaṃ purāṇīm.

He who, searching, has not found any substance in states of existence, like one searching for a flower on udumbara trees;
that monk gives up this shore and the far shore, like a snake its old, worn-out skin.


यस्यान्तरतो न सन्ति कोपा,
इतिभवाभवतां च वीतिवृत्तः।
स भिक्षुर्जहात्यवारपारम्,
उरगो जीर्णामिव त्वचं पुराणीम्॥

yasyāntarato na santi kopā,
itibhavābhavatāṃ ca vītivṛttaḥ.
sa bhikṣur jahāti avārapāram,
urago jīrṇām iva tvacaṃ purāṇīm.

He in whom there are no inner rages, and who has overcome both becoming and non-becoming;
that monk gives up this shore and the far shore, like a snake its old, worn-out skin.


यस्य वितर्का विधूपिता,
अध्यात्मं सुविकल्पिता अशेषाः।
स भिक्षुर्जहात्यवारपारम्,
उरगो जीर्णामिव त्वचं पुराणीम्॥

yasya vitarkā vidhūpitā,
adhyātmaṃ suvikalpitā aśeṣāḥ.
sa bhikṣur jahāti avārapāram,
urago jīrṇām iva tvacaṃ purāṇīm.

He whose conjectures are all dispelled, inwardly completely cut off;
that monk gives up this shore and the far shore, like a snake its old, worn-out skin.


यो नात्यसार्षीन्न प्रत्यसार्षीत्,
सर्वमत्यगमदिमं प्रपञ्चम्।
स भिक्षुर्जहात्यवारपारम्,
उरगो जीर्णामिव त्वचं पुराणीम्॥

yo nātyasārṣīn na pratyasārṣīt,
sarvam atyagamad imaṃ prapañcam.
sa bhikṣur jahāti avārapāram,
urago jīrṇām iva tvacaṃ purāṇīm.

He who has neither been too hasty nor lagged behind, who has overcome all this conceptual proliferation;
that monk gives up this shore and the far shore, like a snake its old, worn-out skin.


यो नात्यसार्षीन्न प्रत्यसार्षीत्,
सर्वं वितथमिदमिति ज्ञात्वा लोके।
स भिक्षुर्जहात्यवारपारम्,
उरगो जीर्णामिव त्वचं पुराणीम्॥

yo nātyasārṣīn na pratyasārṣīt,
sarvaṃ vitatham idam iti jñātvā loke.
sa bhikṣur jahāti avārapāram,
urago jīrṇām iva tvacaṃ purāṇīm.

He who has neither been too hasty nor lagged behind, having known that 'all this in the world is unreal';
that monk gives up this shore and the far shore, like a snake its old, worn-out skin.


यो नात्यसार्षीन्न प्रत्यसार्षीत्,
सर्वं वितथमिदमिति वीतलोभः।
स भिक्षुर्जहात्यवारपारम्,
उरगो जीर्णामिव त्वचं पुराणीम्॥

yo nātyasārṣīn na pratyasārṣīt,
sarvaṃ vitatham idam iti vītalobhaḥ.
sa bhikṣur jahāti avārapāram,
urago jīrṇām iva tvacaṃ purāṇīm.

He who has neither been too hasty nor lagged behind, who is free from greed, knowing 'all this is unreal';
that monk gives up this shore and the far shore, like a snake its old, worn-out skin.


यो नात्यसार्षीन्न प्रत्यसार्षीत्,
सर्वं वितथमिदमिति वीतरागः।
स भिक्षुर्जहात्यवारपारम्,
उरगो जीर्णामिव त्वचं पुराणीम्॥

yo nātyasārṣīn na pratyasārṣīt,
sarvaṃ vitatham idam iti vītarāgaḥ.
sa bhikṣur jahāti avārapāram,
urago jīrṇām iva tvacaṃ purāṇīm.

He who has neither been too hasty nor lagged behind, who is free from passion, knowing 'all this is unreal';
that monk gives up this shore and the far shore, like a snake its old, worn-out skin.


यो नात्यसार्षीन्न प्रत्यसार्षीत्,
सर्वं वितथमिदमिति वीतद्वेषः।
स भिक्षुर्जहात्यवारपारम्,
उरगो जीर्णामिव त्वचं पुराणीम्॥

yo nātyasārṣīn na pratyasārṣīt,
sarvaṃ vitatham idam iti vītadveṣaḥ.
sa bhikṣur jahāti avārapāram,
urago jīrṇām iva tvacaṃ purāṇīm.

He who has neither been too hasty nor lagged behind, who is free from hatred, knowing 'all this is unreal';
that monk gives up this shore and the far shore, like a snake its old, worn-out skin.


यो नात्यसार्षीन्न प्रत्यसार्षीत्,
सर्वं वितथमिदमिति वीतमोहः।
स भिक्षुर्जहात्यवारपारम्,
उरगो जीर्णामिव त्वचं पुराणीम्॥

yo nātyasārṣīn na pratyasārṣīt,
sarvaṃ vitatham idam iti vītamohaḥ.
sa bhikṣur jahāti avārapāram,
urago jīrṇām iva tvacaṃ purāṇīm.

He who has neither been too hasty nor lagged behind, who is free from delusion, knowing 'all this is unreal';
that monk gives up this shore and the far shore, like a snake its old, worn-out skin.


यस्यानुशया न सन्ति केचिन्,
मूलानि चाकुशलानि समूहतानि।
स भिक्षुर्जहात्यवारपारम्,
उरगो जीर्णामिव त्वचं पुराणीम्॥

yasyānuśayā na santi kecin,
mūlāni cākuśalāni samūhatāni.
sa bhikṣur jahāti avārapāram,
urago jīrṇām iva tvacaṃ purāṇīm.

He for whom there are no latent tendencies, and whose unwholesome roots have been uprooted;
that monk gives up this shore and the far shore, like a snake its old, worn-out skin.


यस्य दरदजा न सन्ति केचिद्,
अवारमागमनाय प्रत्ययासः।
स भिक्षुर्जहात्यवारपारम्,
उरगो जीर्णामिव त्वचं पुराणीम्॥

yasya daradajā na santi kecid,
avāram āgamanāya pratyayāsaḥ.
sa bhikṣur jahāti avārapāram,
urago jīrṇām iva tvacaṃ purāṇīm.

He for whom no anxieties are born, nor any causes for returning to this shore;
that monk gives up this shore and the far shore, like a snake its old, worn-out skin.


यस्य वननजा न सन्ति केचिद्,
विनिबन्धाय भवाय हेतुकल्पाः।
स भिक्षुर्जहात्यवारपारम्,
उरगो जीर्णामिव त्वचं पुराणीम्॥

yasya vananajā na santi kecid,
vinibandhāya bhavāya hetukalpāḥ.
sa bhikṣur jahāti avārapāram,
urago jīrṇām iva tvacaṃ purāṇīm.

He for whom no cravings are born, which act as causes for binding to existence;
that monk gives up this shore and the far shore, like a snake its old, worn-out skin.


यो नीवरणानि प्रहाय पञ्च,
अनृघस्तीर्णकथंकथो विशल्यः।
स भिक्षुर्जहात्यवारपारम्,
उरगो जीर्णामिव त्वचं पुराणीम्॥ इति

yo nīvaraṇāni prahāya pañca,
anṛghas tīrṇakathaṃkatho viśalyaḥ.
sa bhikṣur jahāti avārapāram,
urago jīrṇām iva tvacaṃ purāṇīm. iti

He who, having abandoned the five hindrances, is untroubled, has crossed over doubt, and is without a dart;
that monk gives up this shore and the far shore, like a snake its old, worn-out skin.


उरगसूक्तम् प्रथमम्।
