Madhyama Āgama 5 — dāruskandhopamasūktam — The similie of the burning woodpile

evaṃ mayā śrutam — ekasmin samaye bhagavān kosaleṣu cārikāṃ carati sma mahatā bhikṣusaṃghena sārdham.

tena khalu samayena bhagavān antarāmārge 'nyatarasmin pradeśe dadarśa mahāntaṃ dāruskandham ādīptaṃ pradīptaṃ saṃprajvalitam. dṛṣṭvā ca mārgād apakramyānyatarad vṛkṣamūlam upajagāma. upagatya prajñapta eva niṣīdane paryaṅkam ābhujya nyasīdat.

niṣadya khalu bhagavān bhikṣūn āmantrayām āsa — paśyatha yūyaṃ bhikṣava imaṃ mahāntaṃ dāruskandham ādīptaṃ pradīptaṃ saṃprajvalitam?

te bhikṣavo bhagavataḥ pratyauśrauṣuḥ — dṛśyate bhagavann iti.

bhagavān etad uvāca — tat kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavaḥ, katamad atra sukham, yad imaṃ mahāntaṃ dāruskandham ādīptaṃ pradīptaṃ saṃprajvalitam āliṅget, tatra copaviśed adhiśayīta vā, yadvā kṣatriyakanyāṃ vā brāhmaṇakanyāṃ vā gṛhapatikanyāṃ vā karmārakanyāṃ vā yuvatiṃ taruṇīṃ susnātāṃ suviliptāṃ śuklavastrāṃ mālyābharaṇavibhūṣitagātrīm āliṅget, tasyāś copaviśed adhiśayīta vā?

te bhikṣavo 'vocuḥ — duḥkham etad bhagavan, yad imaṃ mahāntaṃ dāruskandham ādīptaṃ pradīptaṃ saṃprajvalitam āliṅget, tatra copaviśed adhiśayīta vā. sukham etad bhagavan, yat kṣatriyakanyāṃ vā brāhmaṇakanyāṃ vā gṛhapatikanyāṃ vā karmārakanyāṃ vā yuvatiṃ taruṇīṃ susnātāṃ suviliptāṃ śuklavastrāṃ mālyābharaṇavibhūṣitagātrīm āliṅget, tasyāś copaviśed adhiśayīta vā.

bhagavān āha — ārocayāmi vo bhikṣavaḥ prativedayāmi vo bhikṣavaḥ, mā yuṣmākaṃ śramaṇabhūtānāṃ satāṃ śrāmaṇyād dhānir bhūt. yuṣmākam anuttaraṃ brahmacaryaṃ caritukāmānāṃ varam etad yad imaṃ mahāntaṃ dāruskandham ādīptaṃ pradīptaṃ saṃprajvalitam āliṅget, tatra copaviśed adhiśayīta vā. api ca tena nidānena sa maraṇaṃ vā nigacchen maraṇamātraṃ vā duḥkham, na tv eva taddhetuṃ kāyasya bhedāt param maraṇād apāyaṃ durgatiṃ vinipātaṃ narakam upapadyeta.

yaḥ punar asau mohapuruṣo duḥśīlaḥ kusīda utpannapāpākuśaladharmo 'brahmacārī brahmacāripratijño 'śramaṇaḥ śramaṇapratijñaḥ, sa yat kṣatriyakanyāṃ vā brāhmaṇakanyāṃ vā gṛhapatikanyāṃ vā karmārakanyāṃ vā yuvatiṃ taruṇīṃ susnātāṃ suviliptāṃ śuklavastrāṃ mālyābharaṇavibhūṣitagātrīm āliṅget, tasyāś copaviśed adhiśayīta vā, tena nidānena tasya mohapuruṣasya dīrgharātram akuśalāya anarthāya pāpavipākāya saṃvartate. kāyasya bhedāt param maraṇād apāyaṃ durgatiṃ vinipātaṃ narakam upapadyate.

tasmāt tarhi bhikṣavaḥ, svārthaṃ saṃpaśyadbhiḥ parārthaṃ saṃpaśyadbhir ubhayārthaṃ saṃpaśyadbhir evam evaṃ hi vo śikṣitavyam — amoghā me bhaviṣyati pravrajyā avandhyā saphalā savipākā. paramasukhasamanvāgataḥ sugatiṣūpapatsye dīrghāyuṣkaś ca bhaviṣyāmi. yeṣāṃ cāhaṃ dānapatīnāṃ śraddhādeyāni cīvarāṇi piṇḍapātaṃ śayanāsanaṃ glānapratyayabhaiṣajyāni ca paribhuñje, yena teṣāṃ te kārā mahāpuṇyā bhaviṣyanti mahāvipākā mahādyutikā iti. evam evaṃ hi vo śikṣitavyam.

te bhikṣavo 'vocuḥ — duḥkham etad bhagavan, yad balavān puruṣo 'yotāmramaye paryaṅke mañce vādīpte dīpte saṃprajvalite balenopaveśayed adhiśāyayed vā. sukham etad bhagavan, yat kṣatriyebhyo vā brāhmaṇebhyo vā gṛhapatibhyo vā karmārebhyo vā śraddhādeyaṃ mañcapīṭhaśayanāsanaṃ pratigṛhṇīyāt.

te bhikṣavo 'vocuḥ — duḥkham etad bhagavan, yad balavān puruṣo mahatyām ayotāmramayyāṃ piṭharikāyām ādīptāyāṃ dīptāyāṃ saṃprajvalitāyām puruṣam utkṣipyāvākśirasaṃ prakṣipet. sukham etad bhagavan, yat kṣatriyebhyo vā brāhmaṇebhyo vā gṛhapatibhyo vā karmārebhyo vā ulliptāvaliptaṃ dṛḍhakavāṭapihitavātapānaṃ sāgnikaṃ kṛtoṣṇaṃ śraddhādeyaṃ vihāraṃ pratigṛhṇīyāt.

bhagavān āha — ārocayāmi vo bhikṣavaḥ prativedayāmi vo bhikṣavaḥ, mā yuṣmākaṃ śramaṇabhūtānāṃ satāṃ śrāmaṇyād dhānir bhūt. yuṣmākam anuttaraṃ brahmacaryaṃ caritukāmānāṃ varam etad yad balavān puruṣo mahatyām ayotāmramayyāṃ piṭharikāyām ādīptāyāṃ dīptāyāṃ saṃprajvalitāyām puruṣam utkṣipyāvākśirasaṃ prakṣipet. api ca tena nidānena sa maraṇaṃ vā nigacchen maraṇamātraṃ vā duḥkham, na tv eva taddhetuṃ kāyasya bhedāt param maraṇād apāyaṃ durgatiṃ vinipātaṃ narakam upapadyeta.

yaḥ punar asau mohapuruṣo duḥśīlaḥ kusīda utpannapāpākuśaladharmo 'brahmacārī brahmacāripratijño 'śramaṇaḥ śramaṇapratijñaḥ, sa yat kṣatriyebhyo vā brāhmaṇebhyo vā gṛhapatibhyo vā karmārebhyo vā ulliptāvaliptaṃ dṛḍhakavāṭapihitavātapānaṃ sāgnikaṃ kṛtoṣṇaṃ śraddhādeyaṃ vihāraṃ pratigṛhṇīyāt, tena nidānena tasya mohapuruṣasya dīrgharātram akuśalāya anarthāya pāpavipākāya saṃvartate. kāyasya bhedāt param maraṇād apāyaṃ durgatiṃ vinipātaṃ narakam upapadyate.

tasmāt tarhi bhikṣavaḥ, svārthaṃ saṃpaśyadbhiḥ parārthaṃ saṃpaśyadbhir ubhayārthaṃ saṃpaśyadbhir evam evaṃ hi vo śikṣitavyam — amoghā me bhaviṣyati pravrajyā avandhyā saphalā savipākā. paramasukhasamanvāgataḥ sugatiṣūpapatsye dīrghāyuṣkaś ca bhaviṣyāmi. yeṣāṃ cāhaṃ dānapatīnāṃ śraddhādeyāni cīvarāṇi piṇḍapātaṃ śayanāsanaṃ glānapratyayabhaiṣajyāni ca paribhuñje, yena teṣāṃ te kārā mahāpuṇyā bhaviṣyanti mahāvipākā mahādyutikā iti. evam evaṃ hi vo śikṣitavyam.

asmin khalu dharmaparyāye bhāṣyamāṇe ṣaṣṭīnāṃ bhikṣūṇām āsravāḥ kṣīṇāḥ saṃyojanāni ca prahīṇāni. ṣaṣṭiś ca bhikṣavaḥ śikṣāṃ pratyākhyāya gṛhān upagatāḥ. tat kasya hetoḥ? tathā hi bhagavato 'nuśāsanī gambhīrā paramaduṣkarā, śrāmaṇyaṃ cāpi gambhīraṃ paramaduṣkaram iti.

idam avocad bhagavān. āttamanasas te bhikṣavo bhagavato bhāṣitam abhyanandiṣuḥ.
