Madhyama Nikāya 1 — mūlaparyāyasūktam — The Teaching about Fundamentals

evaṃ mayā śrutam—ekasmin samaye bhagavān utkṛṣṭāyāṃ vyahārṣīt subhagavane śālarājamūle. tatra khalu bhagavān bhikṣūn āmamantrata— “bhikṣava” iti.

“bhadanta” iti te bhikṣavo bhagavataḥ pratyaśrauṣuḥ. bhagavān etad avocat—

“sarvadharmamūlaparyāyaṃ vo bhikṣavo deśayiṣyāmi. taṃ śṛṇuta, sādhu manasi kuruta, bhāṣiṣya” iti.

“evaṃ bhadanta” iti khalu te bhikṣavo bhagavataḥ pratyaśrauṣuḥ. bhagavān etad avocat—

“iha bhikṣavo 'śrutavān pṛthagjana āryāṇām adarśivān āryadharmasyākovida āryadharme 'vinītaḥ, satpuruṣāṇām adarśivān satpuruṣadharmasyākovidaḥ satpuruṣadharme 'vinītaḥ—pṛthivīṃ pṛthivitvena saṃjānāti; pṛthivīṃ pṛthivitvena saṃjñāya pṛthivīṃ manyate, pṛthivyāṃ manyate, pṛthivito manyate, pṛthivī ma iti manyate, pṛthivīm abhinandati. tat kasya hetoḥ? aparijñātaṃ tasyeti vadāmi.

āpam āpatvena saṃjānāti; āpam aptvena saṃjñāya āpaṃ manyate, apsu manyate, āpto manyate, āpaṃ ma iti manyate, āpam abhinandati. tat kasya hetoḥ? aparijñātaṃ tasyeti vadāmi.

tejas tejatvena saṃjānāti; tejas tejataḥ saṃjñāya tejo manyate, tejasi manyate, tejato manyate, tejo ma iti manyate, tejo 'bhinandati. tat kasya hetoḥ? aparijñātaṃ tasyeti vadāmi.

vāyuṃ vāyutvena saṃjānāti; vāyuṃ vāyutvena saṃjñāya vāyuṃ manyate, vāyau manyate, vāyuto manyate, vāyur ma iti manyate, vāyum abhinandati. tat kasya hetoḥ? aparijñātaṃ tasyeti vadāmi.

bhūtāni bhūtatvena saṃjānāti; bhūtāni bhūtatvena saṃjñāya bhūtāni manyate, bhūteṣu manyate, bhūtato manyate, bhūtāni ma iti manyate, bhūtāny abhinandati. tat kasya hetoḥ? aparijñātaṃ tasyeti vadāmi.

devān devatvena saṃjānāti; devān devatvena saṃjñāya devān manyate, deveṣu manyate, devato manyate, devān ma iti manyate, devān abhinandati. tat kasya hetoḥ? aparijñātaṃ tasyeti vadāmi.

prajāpatiṃ prajāpatitvena saṃjānāti; prajāpatiṃ prajāpatitvena saṃjñāya prajāpatiṃ manyate, prajāpatau manyate, prajāpatito manyate, prajāpatir ma iti manyate, prajāpatim abhinandati. tat kasya hetoḥ? aparijñātaṃ tasyeti vadāmi.

brahmāṇaṃ brahmatvena saṃjānāti; brahmāṇaṃ brahmatvena saṃjñāya brahmāṇaṃ manyate, brahmaṇi manyate, brahmato manyate, brahmā ma iti manyate, brahmāṇam abhinandati. tat kasya hetoḥ? aparijñātaṃ tasyeti vadāmi.

ābhāsvarān ābhāsvaratvena saṃjānāti; ābhāsvarān ābhāsvaratvena saṃjñāya ābhāsvarān manyate, ābhāsvareṣu manyate, ābhāsvarato manyate, ābhāsvarān ma iti manyate, ābhāsvarān abhinandati. tat kasya hetoḥ? aparijñātaṃ tasyeti vadāmi.

śubhākṛtsnān śubhākṛtsnatvena saṃjānāti; śubhākṛtsnān śubhākṛtsnatvena saṃjñāya śubhākṛtsnān manyate, śubhākṛtsneṣu manyate, śubhākṛtsnato manyate, śubhākṛtsnān ma iti manyate, śubhākṛtsnān abhinandati. tat kasya hetoḥ? aparijñātaṃ tasyeti vadāmi.

bṛhatphalān bṛhatphalatvena saṃjānāti; bṛhatphalān bṛhatphalatvena saṃjñāya bṛhatphalān manyate, bṛhatphaleṣu manyate, bṛhatphalato manyate, bṛhatphalān ma iti manyate, bṛhatphalān abhinandati. tat kasya hetoḥ? aparijñātaṃ tasyeti vadāmi.

abhibhuvaṃ abhibhutvena saṃjānāti; abhibhuvaṃ abhibhutvena saṃjñāya abhibhuvaṃ manyate, abhibhuvi manyate, abhibhuto manyate, abhibhūr ma iti manyate, abhibhuvam abhinandati. tat kasya hetoḥ? aparijñātaṃ tasyeti vadāmi.

ākāśānantyāyatanam ākāśānantyāyatanatvena saṃjānāti; ākāśānantyāyatanam ākāśānantyāyatanatvena saṃjñāya ākāśānantyāyatanaṃ manyate, ākāśānantyāyatane manyate, ākāśānantyāyatanato manyate, ākāśānantyāyatanaṃ ma iti manyate, ākāśānantyāyatanam abhinandati. tat kasya hetoḥ? aparijñātaṃ tasyeti vadāmi.

vijñānānantyāyatanaṃ vijñānānantyāyatanatvena saṃjānāti; vijñānānantyāyatanaṃ vijñānānantyāyatanatvena saṃjñāya vijñānānantyāyatanaṃ manyate, vijñānānantyāyatane manyate, vijñānānantyāyatanato manyate, vijñānānantyāyatanaṃ ma iti manyate, vijñānānantyāyatanam abhinandati. tat kasya hetoḥ? aparijñātaṃ tasyeti vadāmi.

ākiñcanyāyatanam ākiñcanyāyatanatvena saṃjānāti; ākiñcanyāyatanam ākiñcanyāyatanatvena saṃjñāya ākiñcanyāyatanaṃ manyate, ākiñcanyāyatane manyate, ākiñcanyāyatanato manyate, ākiñcanyāyatanaṃ ma iti manyate, ākiñcanyāyatanam abhinandati. tat kasya hetoḥ? aparijñātaṃ tasyeti vadāmi.

naivasaṃjñānāsaṃjñāyatanaṃ naivasaṃjñānāsaṃjñāyatanatvena saṃjānāti; naivasaṃjñānāsaṃjñāyatanaṃ naivasaṃjñānāsaṃjñāyatanatvena saṃjñāya naivasaṃjñānāsaṃjñāyatanaṃ manyate, naivasaṃjñānāsaṃjñāyatane manyate, naivasaṃjñānāsaṃjñāyatanato manyate, naivasaṃjñānāsaṃjñāyatanaṃ ma iti manyate, naivasaṃjñānāsaṃjñāyatanam abhinandati. tat kasya hetoḥ? aparijñātaṃ tasyeti vadāmi.

dṛṣṭaṃ dṛṣṭatvena saṃjānāti; dṛṣṭaṃ dṛṣṭatvena saṃjñāya dṛṣṭaṃ manyate, dṛṣṭe manyate, dṛṣṭato manyate, dṛṣṭaṃ ma iti manyate, dṛṣṭam abhinandati. tat kasya hetoḥ? aparijñātaṃ tasyeti vadāmi.

śrutaṃ śrutatvena saṃjānāti; śrutaṃ śrutatvena saṃjñāya śrutaṃ manyate, śrute manyate, śrutato manyate, śrutaṃ ma iti manyate, śrutam abhinandati. tat kasya hetoḥ? aparijñātaṃ tasyeti vadāmi.

mataṃ matatvena saṃjānāti; mataṃ matatvena saṃjñāya mataṃ manyate, mate manyate, matato manyate, mataṃ ma iti manyate, matam abhinandati. tat kasya hetoḥ? aparijñātaṃ tasyeti vadāmi.

vijñātaṃ vijñātatvena saṃjānāti; vijñātaṃ vijñātatvena saṃjñāya vijñātaṃ manyate, vijñāte manyate, vijñātato manyate, vijñātaṃ ma iti manyate, vijñātam abhinandati. tat kasya hetoḥ? aparijñātaṃ tasyeti vadāmi.

ekatvam ekatvatvena saṃjānāti; ekatvam ekatvatvena saṃjñāya ekatvaṃ manyate, ekatve manyate, ekatvato manyate, ekatvaṃ ma iti manyate, ekatvam abhinandati. tat kasya hetoḥ? aparijñātaṃ tasyeti vadāmi.

nānātvaṃ nānātvatvena saṃjānāti; nānātvaṃ nānātvatvena saṃjñāya nānātvaṃ manyate, nānātve manyate, nānātvato manyate, nānātvaṃ ma iti manyate, nānātvam abhinandati. tat kasya hetoḥ? aparijñātaṃ tasyeti vadāmi.

sarvaṃ sarvatvena saṃjānāti; sarvaṃ sarvatvena saṃjñāya sarvaṃ manyate, sarvasmin manyate, sarvato manyate, sarvaṃ ma iti manyate, sarvam abhinandati. tat kasya hetoḥ? aparijñātaṃ tasyeti vadāmi.

nirvāṇaṃ nirvāṇatvena saṃjānāti; nirvāṇaṃ nirvāṇatvena saṃjñāya nirvāṇaṃ manyate, nirvāṇe manyate, nirvāṇato manyate, nirvāṇaṃ ma iti manyate, nirvāṇam abhinandati. tat kasya hetoḥ? aparijñātaṃ tasyeti vadāmi.

pṛthagjanavaśena prathamanayabhūmiparicchedo niṣṭhitaḥ.

yo 'pi sa bhikṣavo bhikṣuḥ śaikṣo 'prāptamānaso 'nuttaraṃ yogakṣemaṃ prārthayamāno viharati, so 'pi pṛthivīṃ pṛthivitvena abhijānāti; pṛthivīṃ pṛthivitvena abhijñāya pṛthivīṃ mā maṃsta, pṛthivyāṃ mā maṃsta, pṛthivito mā maṃsta, pṛthivī ma iti mā maṃsta, pṛthivīṃ mābhinandīt. tat kasya hetoḥ? parijñeyaṃ tasyeti vadāmi.

āpam … pūrvavat … tejaḥ … vāyum … bhūtāni … devān … prajāpatim … brahmāṇam … ābhāsvarān … śubhākṛtsnān … bṛhatphalān … abhibhuvam … ākāśānantyāyatanam … vijñānānantyāyatanam … ākiñcanyāyatanam … naivasaṃjñānāsaṃjñāyatanam … dṛṣṭam … śrutam … matam … vijñātam … ekatvam … nānātvam … sarvam … nirvāṇaṃ nirvāṇatvena abhijānāti; nirvāṇaṃ nirvāṇatvena abhijñāya nirvāṇaṃ mā maṃsta, nirvāṇe mā maṃsta, nirvāṇato mā maṃsta, nirvāṇaṃ ma iti mā maṃsta, nirvāṇaṃ mābhinandīt. tat kasya hetoḥ? parijñeyaṃ tasyeti vadāmi.

śaikṣavaśena dvitīyanayabhūmiparicchedo niṣṭhitaḥ.

yo 'pi sa bhikṣavo bhikṣur arhan kṣīṇāsravo vuṣitavān kṛtakaraṇīyo 'vahitabhāro 'nuprāptasadarthaḥ parikṣīṇabhavasaṃyojanaḥ samyagājñāvimuktaḥ, so 'pi pṛthivīṃ pṛthivitvena abhijānāti; pṛthivīṃ pṛthivitvena abhijñāya pṛthivīṃ na manyate, pṛthivyāṃ na manyate, pṛthivito na manyate, pṛthivī ma iti na manyate, pṛthivīṃ nābhinandati. tat kasya hetoḥ? parijñātaṃ tasyeti vadāmi.

tathāgato 'pi bhikṣavo 'rhan samyaksambuddhaḥ pṛthivīṃ pṛthivitvena abhijānāti; pṛthivīṃ pṛthivitvena abhijñāya pṛthivīṃ na manyate, pṛthivyāṃ na manyate, pṛthivito na manyate, pṛthivī ma iti na manyate, pṛthivīṃ nābhinandati. tat kasya hetoḥ? parijñātaṃ tat tathāgatasyeti vadāmi.

tathāgato 'pi bhikṣavo 'rhan samyaksambuddhaḥ pṛthivīṃ pṛthivitvena abhijānāti; pṛthivīṃ pṛthivitvena abhijñāya pṛthivīṃ na manyate, pṛthivyāṃ na manyate, pṛthivito na manyate, pṛthivī ma iti na manyate, pṛthivīṃ nābhinandati. tat kasya hetoḥ? nandī duḥkhasya mūlam iti—iti viditvā bhavāj jātir bhūtasya jarāmaraṇam iti. tasmād iha bhikṣavas tathāgataḥ sarvaśas tṛṣṇānāṃ kṣayād virāgān nirodhāt tyāgāt pratinisargād anuttarāṃ samyaksambodhim abhisambuddha iti vadāmi.
