evam mayā śrutam—ekasmin samaye bhagavān śākyesu vyahārṣīt kapilavastuni nyagrodhārāme.
atha khalu bhagavān pūrvāhṇasamaye nivasya pātracīvaram ādāya kapilavastu piṇḍāya prāvikṣat. kapilavastuni piṇḍāya caritvā paścādbhaktaṃ piṇḍapātapratikrānto yena mahāvanaṃ tenopasamakramīd divāvihārāya. mahāvanam adhyavagāhya bailvayaṣṭikāyā mūle divāvihārāya nyaṣīdat.
daṇḍapāṇir api khalu śākyaḥ jaṅghāvihāram anucaṅkramyamāṇo 'nuvicaran yena mahāvanaṃ tenopasamakramīt. mahāvanam adhyavagāhya yena bailvayaṣṭikā yena bhagavān tenopasamakramīt, upasaṃkramya bhagavatā sārdhaṃ samamodiṣṭa. sammodanīyāṃ kathāṃ smāraṇīyāṃ vyatisārya daṇḍam avalambyaikāntam asthāt. ekāntaṃ sthitaḥ khalu daṇḍapāṇiḥ śākyaḥ bhagavantam etad avocat— “kiṃvādī śramaṇaḥ kimākhyāyī”ti?
“yathāvādī khalv āyuṣman sadevake loke samārake sabrahmake saśramaṇabrāhmaṇyāṃ prajāyāṃ sadevamanuṣyāyāṃ na kenacil loke vigṛhya tiṣṭhati, yathā ca punaḥ kāmair visaṃyuktaṃ viharantaṃ taṃ brāhmaṇam akathaṃkathiṃ chinnakaukṛtyaṃ bhavābhave vītatṛṣṇaṃ saṃjñā nānuśerate—evaṃvādī khalv aham āyuṣman evamākhyāyī”ti.
evam ukte, daṇḍapāṇiḥ śākyaḥ śīrṣam avakampya jihvāṃ nirlāḍya triśākhāṃ lalāṭikāṃ lalāṭe vyutthāpya daṇḍam avalambya prākramīt.
atha khalu bhagavān sāyāhnasamaye pratisaṃlayanād vyutthito yena nyagrodhārāmas tenopasamakramīt, upasamakramya prajñapte 'sane nyaṣadat. niṣadya khalu bhagavān bhikṣūn āmantrayām āsa— “ihāhaṃ bhikṣavaḥ pūrvāhṇasamaye nivasya pātracīvaram ādāya kapilavastu piṇḍāya prāvikṣam. kapilavastuni piṇḍāya caritvā paścādbhaktaṃ piṇḍapātapratikrānto yena mahāvanaṃ tenopasamakramiṣam divāvihārāya. mahāvanam adhyavagāhya bailvayaṣṭikāyā mūle divāvihārāya nyaṣadam. daṇḍapāṇir api khalu bhikṣavaḥ śākyaḥ jaṅghāvihāram anucaṅkramyamāṇo 'nuvicaran yena mahāvanaṃ tenopasamakramīt. mahāvanam adhyavagāhya yena bailvayaṣṭikā yenāhaṃ tenopasamakramīt, upasamakramya mayā sārdhaṃ samamodiṣṭa. sammodanīyāṃ kathāṃ smāraṇīyāṃ vyatisārya daṇḍam avalambyaikāntam asthāt. ekāntaṃ sthitaḥ khalu bhikṣavo daṇḍapāṇiḥ śākyaḥ mām etad avocat— 'kiṃvādī śramaṇaḥ kimākhyāyī'ti?

“yatonidānaṃ bhikṣo puruṣaṃ prapañcasaṃjñāsaṃkhyāḥ samudācaranti, atra cen nāsty abhinanditavyam abhivaditavyam adhyavasātavyam, eṣa evānto rāgānuśayānām, eṣa evāntaḥ pratighānuśayānām, eṣa evānto dṛṣṭyānuśayānām, eṣa evānto vicikitsānuśayānām, eṣa evānto mānānuśayānām, eṣa evānto bhavarāgānuśayānām, eṣa evānto 'vidyānuśayānām, eṣa evānto daṇḍādānaśastrādānakalahavigrahavivādatvaṃtvampaiśūnyamṛṣāvādānām. atraite pāpakā akuśalā dharmā apariśeṣā nirudhyante” iti.
idam avocad bhagavān. idam uktvā sugata utthāyāsanād vihāraṃ prāvikṣat.
atha khalu teṣāṃ bhikṣūṇām aciraprakrānte bhagavaty etad abhūt— “idaṃ khalu no 'yuṣmanto bhagavān saṃkṣiptenoddeśam uddiśya vistareṇārtham avibhajyotthāyāsanād vihāraṃ praviṣṭaḥ— 'yatonidānaṃ bhikṣo puruṣaṃ prapañcasaṃjñāsaṃkhyāḥ samudācaranti, atra cen nāsty abhinanditavyam abhivaditavyam adhyavasātavyam, eṣa evānto rāgānuśayānām … pūrvavat … atraite pāpakā akuśalā dharmā apariśeṣā nirudhyante' iti. ko nu khalv asya bhagavatā saṃkṣiptenoddeśasyoddiṣṭasya vistareṇārtham avibhaktasya vistareṇārthaṃ vibhajet” iti?
atha khalu teṣāṃ bhikṣūṇām etad abhūt— “ayaṃ khalv āyuṣmān mahākātyāyanaḥ śāstuś caiva saṃvarṇitaḥ saṃbhāvitaś ca vijñānāṃ sabrahmacāriṇām. prabhavati cāyuṣmān mahākātyāyano 'sya bhagavatā saṃkṣiptenoddeśasyoddiṣṭasya vistareṇārtham avibhaktasya vistareṇārthaṃ vibhaktum. yannu vayaṃ yenāyuṣmān mahākātyāyanas tenopasaṃkrāmema, upasaṃkramyāyuṣmantaṃ mahākātyāyanam etam arthaṃ paripṛcchema” iti.
atha khalu te bhikṣavo yenāyuṣmān mahākātyāyanas tenopasamakramiṣuḥ, upasamakramyāyuṣmatā mahākātyāyanena sārdhaṃ samamodiṣata. sammodanīyāṃ kathāṃ smāraṇīyāṃ vyatisāryaikāntaṃ nyaṣadan. ekāntaṃ niṣaṇṇāḥ khalu te bhikṣava āyuṣmantaṃ mahākātyāyanam etad avocan— “idaṃ khalu no 'yuṣman kātyāyana bhagavān saṃkṣiptenoddeśam uddiśya vistareṇārtham avibhajyotthāyāsanād vihāraṃ praviṣṭaḥ— 'yatonidānaṃ bhikṣo puruṣaṃ prapañcasaṃjñāsaṃkhyāḥ samudācaranti, atra cen nāsty abhinanditavyam abhivaditavyam adhyavasātavyam, eṣa evānto rāgānuśayānām … pūrvavat … atraite pāpakā akuśalā dharmā apariśeṣā nirudhyante' iti. teṣāṃ no 'yuṣman kātyāyanāsmākam aciraprakrānte bhagavaty etad abhūt— 'idaṃ khalu no 'yuṣmanto bhagavān saṃkṣiptenoddeśam uddiśya vistareṇārtham avibhajyotthāyāsanād vihāraṃ praviṣṭaḥ: “yatonidānaṃ bhikṣo puruṣaṃ prapañcasaṃjñāsaṃkhyāḥ samudācaranti, atra cen nāsty abhinanditavyam abhivaditavyam adhyavasātavyam, eṣa evānto rāgānuśayānām … pūrvavat … atraite pāpakā akuśalā dharmā apariśeṣā nirudhyante” iti. ko nu khalv asya bhagavatā saṃkṣiptenoddeśasyoddiṣṭasya vistareṇārtham avibhaktasya vistareṇārthaṃ vibhajet' iti? teṣāṃ no 'yuṣman kātyāyanāsmākam etad abhūt— 'ayaṃ khalv āyuṣmān mahākātyāyanaḥ śāstuś caiva saṃvarṇitaḥ saṃbhāvitaś ca vijñānāṃ sabrahmacāriṇām, prabhavati cāyuṣmān mahākātyāyano 'sya bhagavatā saṃkṣiptenoddeśasyoddiṣṭasya vistareṇārtham avibhaktasya vistareṇārthaṃ vibhaktum. yannu vayaṃ yenāyuṣmān mahākātyāyanas tenopasaṃkrāmema, upasaṃkramyāyuṣmantaṃ mahākātyāyanam etam arthaṃ paripṛcchema' iti. vibhajatv āyuṣmān mahākātyāyanaḥ” iti.
“tadyathāpy āyuṣmantaḥ puruṣaḥ sārārthī sāragaveṣī sāraparyeṣaṇāṃ caran mahato vṛkṣasya tiṣṭhataḥ sāravataḥ atikramyaiva mūlam atikramya skandhaṃ śākhāpalāśe sāraṃ paryeṣitavyaṃ manyeta, evaṃsaṃpadam idam āyuṣmatāṃ śāstari saṃmukhībhūte taṃ bhagavantam atisṛtyāsmān etam arthaṃ paripṛcchitavyaṃ manyadhve. sa hy āyuṣmanto bhagavāñ jānāñjānāti paśyanpaśyati, cakṣurbhūto jñānabhūto dharmabhūto brahmabhūto, vaktā pravaktārthasya nirnetāmṛtasya dātā dharmasvāmī tathāgataḥ. sa caiva punar etasya kālo 'bhūd yad bhagavantam evaitam arthaṃ paripṛccheta. yathā vo bhagavān vyākuryāt tathainaṃ dhārayeta” iti.
“addhāyuṣman kātyāyana, bhagavāñ jānāñjānāti paśyanpaśyati, cakṣurbhūto jñānabhūto dharmabhūto brahmabhūto, vaktā pravaktārthasya nirnetāmṛtasya dātā dharmasvāmī tathāgataḥ. sa caiva punar etasya kālo 'bhūd yad bhagavantam evaitam arthaṃ paripṛcchema. yathā no bhagavān vyākuryāt tathainaṃ dhārayema. api cāyuṣmān mahākātyāyanaḥ śāstuś caiva saṃvarṇitaḥ saṃbhāvitaś ca vijñānāṃ sabrahmacāriṇām, prabhavati cāyuṣmān mahākātyāyano 'sya bhagavatā saṃkṣiptenoddeśasyoddiṣṭasya vistareṇārtham avibhaktasya vistareṇārthaṃ vibhaktum. vibhajatv āyuṣmān mahākātyāyano 'guruṃ kṛtvā” iti.
“tena hy āyuṣmantaḥ śṛṇuta, sādhu manasikuruta, bhāṣiṣye” iti.
“evam āyuṣman” iti khalu te bhikṣava āyuṣmato mahākātyāyanasya pratyaśrauṣuḥ. āyuṣmān mahākātyāyana etad avocat—
“yat khalu no 'yuṣmanto bhagavān saṃkṣiptenoddeśam uddiśya vistareṇārtham avibhajyotthāyāsanād vihāraṃ praviṣṭaḥ— 'yatonidānaṃ bhikṣo puruṣaṃ prapañcasaṃjñāsaṃkhyāḥ samudācaranti, atra cen nāsty abhinanditavyam abhivaditavyam adhyavasātavyam, eṣa evānto rāgānuśayānām … pūrvavat … atraite pāpakā akuśalā dharmā apariśeṣā nirudhyante' iti, asya khalv aham āyuṣmanto bhagavatā saṃkṣiptenoddeśasyoddiṣṭasya vistareṇārtham avibhaktasyaivaṃ vistareṇārtham ājānāmi—
cakṣuś cāyuṣmantaḥ pratītya rūpāṇi cotpadyate cakṣurvijñānam, trayāṇāṃ saṃgatiḥ sparśaḥ, sparśapratyayā vedanā, yad vedayate tat saṃjānīte, yat saṃjānīte tad vitarkayati, yad vitarkayati tat prapañcayati, yat prapañcayati tatonidānaṃ puruṣaṃ prapañcasaṃjñāsaṃkhyāḥ samudācaranty atītānāgatapratyutpanneṣu cakṣurvijñeyyeṣu rūpeṣu.
śrotraṃ cāyuṣmantaḥ pratītya śabdāṃś cotpadyate śrotravijñānam … pūrvavat …

manaś cāyuṣmantaḥ pratītya dharmāṃś cotpadyate manovijñānam, trayāṇāṃ saṃgatiḥ sparśaḥ, sparśapratyayā vedanā, yad vedayate tat saṃjānīte, yat saṃjānīte tad vitarkayati, yad vitarkayati tat prapañcayati, yat prapañcayati tatonidānaṃ puruṣaṃ prapañcasaṃjñāsaṃkhyāḥ samudācaranty atītānāgatapratyutpanneṣu manovijñeyyeṣu dharmeṣu.
sa vatāyuṣmantaḥ cakṣuṣi sati rūpe sati cakṣurvijñāne sati sparśaprajñaptiṃ prajñāpayiṣyatīti—sthānam etad vidyate. sparśaprajñaptyāṃ satyāṃ vedanāprajñaptiṃ prajñāpayiṣyatīti—sthānam etad vidyate. vedanāprajñaptyāṃ satyāṃ saṃjñāprajñaptiṃ prajñāpayiṣyatīti—sthānam etad vidyate. saṃjñāprajñaptyāṃ satyāṃ vitarkaprajñaptiṃ prajñāpayiṣyatīti—sthānam etad vidyate. vitarkaprajñaptyāṃ satyāṃ prapañcasaṃjñāsaṃkhyāsamudācaraṇaprajñaptiṃ prajñāpayiṣyatīti—sthānam etad vidyate.

yat khalu no 'yuṣmanto bhagavān saṃkṣiptenoddeśam uddiśya vistareṇārtham avibhajyotthāyāsanād vihāraṃ praviṣṭaḥ— 'yatonidānaṃ bhikṣo puruṣaṃ prapañcasaṃjñāsaṃkhyāḥ samudācaranty atra cen nāsty abhinanditavyam abhivaditavyam adhyavasātavyam eṣa evānto rāgānuśayānām … pūrvavat … atraite pāpakā akuśalā dharmā apariśeṣā nirudhyante' iti, asya khalv aham āyuṣmanto bhagavatā saṃkṣiptenoddeśasyoddiṣṭasya vistareṇārtham avibhaktasyaivaṃ vistareṇārtham ājānāmi. ākāṅkṣamāṇāś ca punar yūyam āyuṣmanto bhagavantam evopasaṃkramyaitam arthaṃ paripṛccheta. yathā vo bhagavān vyākaroti tathainaṃ dhārayeta” iti.

“paṇḍito bhikṣavo mahākātyāyanaḥ, mahāprajño bhikṣavo mahākātyāyanaḥ. mām api ced yūyaṃ bhikṣava etam arthaṃ paripṛccheta, aham api tam evam eva vyākuryāṃ yathā taṃ mahākātyāyanena vyākṛtam. eṣa caivaitasyārthaḥ. evaṃ cainaṃ dhārayeta” iti.
evam ukte, āyuṣmān ānando bhagavantam etad avocat— “tadyathāpi bhadanta puruṣo jighatsādaurbalyapareto madhupiṇḍikām adhigacchet, sa yato yataḥ svādayet, labhetaiva svādurasam asecanakam.
evam eva khalu bhadanta cetasā bhikṣur dravyajātīko yato yato 'sya dharmaparyāyasya prajñayārtham upaparīkṣeta, labhetaivāttamanaskatām, labhetaiva cetasaḥ prasādam. ko nāmāyaṃ bhadanta dharmaparyāyaḥ” iti?
“tasmād iha tvam ānandemaṃ dharmaparyāyaṃ madhupiṇḍikaparyāya ity evainaṃ dhāraya” iti.
idam avocad bhagavān. āttamanā āyuṣmān ānando bhagavato bhāṣitam abhyanandad iti.
madhupiṇḍikasūktam niṣṭhitam aṣṭamam.
